It seemed like the scavenger hunt was finally coming to an end as they slowly ran out of different locations they could go to. This one brought the Hufflepuff to what seemed like quite a controversial riddle, with less people at the piles than at the other stations. Maybe people had gotten bored or hungry, but Dori felt alive with competition and was eager to win. Besides, they wanted to know what the prize was even if they didn’t end up winning.

They watched as other hunters chose from two distinct piles and they double checked the riddle themselves, nothing rhymes with orange. It might imply that it couldn’t be the carrot. The nothing trying to stray them away. The problem was the two remaining vegetables were- well, sort of the same color. Parsnip could arguably be white and the potato brown, so two different colors but there was no other color clue.

Dori paced between the two piles, wondering what action they should take before quickly trying to grab a carrot without anyone seeing. It just felt like the right answer. There was a sudden pang of homesickness, specifically during the autumn, when root vegetables were at their peak season. Their mum’s roast vegetables were one of their favorite dishes during that season. They’d have to request it before school started up again. For now they stood and waited for the next clue or for the finishing of the hunt entirely.

"I guess opposites attract," Zophyr said with a grin when Tone mentioned he preferred colder weather. "I must admit you are right about the snow. It's very pretty." Her grin only widened when he suggested getting some food and hanging out a little after the hunt. "That would be awesome!" Who could say no to some more time with Tone?

The fireworks came again, confirming their choice. There was just one last place to go: "where the match starts". The Center Field, of course. She gratefully clambered onto Tone's broom one last time, and they flew down to find the usual table with three items. Which one to choose?

Potatoes, parsnips and carrots. The clue "nothing rhymes with orange" was a little weird, she had to admit, but the only orange thing here was the carrots. Parsnips and potatoes both had nothing to do with it, right? She was hesitant when she saw Tone pick up the parsnips, but... well, this was her own decision. It wasn't the end of the world if she messed up. And she didn't understand how it could be anything else.

Let the fates decide, and the scavenger hunt come to an end! She was way too curious to see what would happen.

SCAVENGER HUNT | Round 6
- July 30, 2024 -
AFTER his stumble over by the goal hoops, Septimus's confidence (and his pride) had taken a hit — but as he watched the fireworks go off overhead from under the brim of his top hat, he was feeling ready to get back in the game. Since the early(ish) morning, he and his fellow summer campers had been all over the stadium, following clues and collecting strange trinkets. How much longer could the scavenger hunt go on? Surely, they were running out of places distinct enough to write a riddle about. This new scroll — number six — was, he'd bet, either the last one or close to it. And if the finish line was on the horizon, then Septimus would pull it together and finish strong.

Scanning the riddle, the future first-year found that it was the second stanza which caught his attention. He usually focused on deciphering the location first and the item only once he'd arrived where he was supposed to be. That was the logical way to do it, after all. But before he could give much thought to where one might see a "classic Quaffle throw," his memory was stirred by the line about "piles of vegetable storage." What an odd phrase, Septimus thought, although he supposed it was impressive to rhyme anything with orange, even if it was a slant rhyme. The poem itself, in fact, cheekily acknowledged this. He ought not to get stuck in the wording, though, because what he was really concerned with was the fact that he'd seen vegetables already! On his way to the goal hoops, he'd crossed the pitch and spied a table stocked with potatoes and carrots. That had to be where the riddle was pointing him! As this realization settled in, Septimus began maneuvering himself out of the stands as quickly — and as carefully — as possible.

Snow crunched under Septimus's feet once more as he caught sight of the table he'd passed by earlier in the scavenger hunt. It had been set up right at centre field: a fact that only meant something to the boy from Bath when he turned around to see the trail of footprints he'd left behind and found the stadium heights looming around him on all sides. He could almost hear the roar of the spectators. He felt a small chill run down his spine as he wondered what it must feel like to be a Quidditch superstar. Although he doubted he was cut out for athletics at that level, Septimus liked the idea of fame. He wanted people yelling his name — trying to get his attention, even if it was just a glance. He wanted to feel important.

Dreams of celebrity status lingered in Septimus's subconscious as he turned towards the vegetables, encouraging him onward. He glanced over the pile of potatoes and paused for a moment on the parsnips, pondering the idea that this riddle might be trying to mislead him. But they had been honest up to this point, so he had no reason to believe that he shouldn't pick up a carrot: the most orange vegetable.

A stick... a scarf... a button... a top hat... a carrot... He couldn't be sure that he'd picked all the right items, but, if so, he was struggling to figure out what they meant. At times, it felt like the answer was at the tip of his tongue — yet before he could grasp it, it was gone. He furrowed his brow in deep concentration, trying to solve this puzzle before the solution was revealed to him, and fought the urge to take a bite of his carrot in the meantime. It all had to add up to something. Something! But... what?

Pyxis hoped that these would be the last of the fireworks. Despite being a bit sweaty from trekking up and down the stadium, he was still freezing and wanted nothing more than to head back to his tent. Even worse - what little protection that the stands offered him from the chill had obviously disappeared by the time he walked out onto the centre field.

Of course, the location was obvious to him even though he didn’t know much about Quidditch. By process of elimination it was easy to pick out, though he was still keeping an eye out for a last minute reversal that would send them back to one of the previous locations. He supposed that the presence of several items to choose from was what upped the difficulty since picking the location was so easy.

This clue was the easiest for Pyxis. He didn’t consider that the riddle could be trying to mislead him. The writer of the clue couldn’t come up with a better hint for carrot so they used its most famous color instead. Pyxis wasn’t sure he could do any better with the riddle-writing. He took a carrot from the pile while grimacing over the fact that they weren’t multi-colored.

Woo Hoo! 5 riddles done, just 1 left. Eugenia was so excited for this to end, her feet and legs were honestly a bit tired from walking around this big, no, giant stadium. The location part was quite easy. She just needed to read the riddle a couple times. The Center Field was the only answer that seemed to come to her mind.

Why, why did the scavenger hunt have to happen in the entire stadium and not in like, some edges of the field or in the actual summer camp? It was like, brutal, having to move to all of the locations. This time, Eugenia didn’t run, even stopping for a couple of minutes to catch her breath. She didn’t have a good night’s sleep in her tent and was both physically and mentally exhausted. The theory of the snowman was something that she kept pondering on during this stroll. It all fit. The snow would be enough to make a really nice one. Maybe this is the winter leisure we will experience in Summer Camp. Well, the organisers surely had an odd idea of what summer is.

After reaching the location, she looked down on the stuff in front of her. Potatoes. Nope, don’t work with either the clue, or the snowman theory. Nothing rhymes with orange. Does it mean that this object doesn’t rhyme with anything, or that the thing is orange? Honestly, the words orange doesn’t fully rhyme with anything, it was just a “ge” suffix and odd sound. So first explanation of the riddle it is. Carrot did rhyme with some stuff, so did potato. Well, I guess a parsnip it is. It does look a bit like a carrot, so no problem. I honestly think this is the oddest riddle I have encountered so far. Nevermind if I get the answer wrong, I just want to make a snowman.

Well, maybe she will make a snowman.
Action: Going to the Center Field and picking the parsnip as item.

The Scavenger Hunt
THE FINAL RIDDLE HAS APPEARED!

As the scavenger hunters accumulated at the Centre Field, each carrying a bevy of items from their travels around the Quidditch stadium, they gathered at the table and chose a vegetable each. The deadline to arrive ticked by, and as it did, Aly Salinger strolled out to the centre of the snow-covered pitch, her arms full of scrolls and a wide smile on her face, to greet the hunters. "Welcome, everybody!" she called out, clearing the remainder of the vegetables off the table and setting down the scrolls. "I'm sure you're tired of fireworks by now, so I thought I'd hand-deliver these scrolls this time instead. Go on, everybody take one. There's just one riddle left."
You've collected all the parts and pieces
You'll need to finish your quest.
Now, the last task to undertake
Is building your snowfolk the best!

So take your snow and try to form
A classic frozen friend,
Our judges will then choose the best
And bring this event's end!
Aly grinned at her participants. "Well, what are you waiting for? Let's see those snowpeople!"
PLEASE REFER TO THE FIRST POST FOR INSTRUCTIONS & RULES.

For this last post, we just ask that you build a snowperson with the items you've gathered throughout the scavenger hunt! There is no right or wrong for this last post - it's just participation that matters! You may only use the items you have collected during the Hunt to build your snowperson. Deadline is the end of August 18th in the last time zone, and afterwards the winner(s) will be announced.
For any questions, please owl Aly Salinger. Please also let me know if I've missed an item in the grand total below.

Tone smiled at her as Zophyr showed interest in continuing to hang out with him for a time after the hunt was over. It was always nice to be with someone he knew and he hadn't seen Zophyr since last summer. But then it was hard for them to meet up since they went to different schools. Glancing back over at Zophyr as she paused in front of the table for a little longer than him, Tone noticed she'd picked the carrot over the parsnip.

It made him tilt his head to the side. Maybe he'd made a mistake? Perhaps the carrot being the only orange thing in the pile had been the answer to the riddle and the nothing rhyming with orange had nothing to do with it and was the actual red herring. But he'd already picked up the parsnip, nothing he could do about it now. The two waited at the table for the golden fireworks and the last riddle scroll to pop up at the place there.

But they got a surprise when Aly Salinger herself showed up instead, her arms filled with scrolls. Tone's lips parted as he stared at her but her presence was quickly explained and he nodded. Moving forward to take a scroll from her arms, he let his eyes flicker over it for a few seconds. Ah, yes. He'd been right in his earlier assumption. They were to build a snowman from the pieces they'd taken. A parsnip would not go well at all with their creation and a carrot would have done the trick quite perfectly.

It looked like he'd lost this hunt. He couldn't help but feel a little annoyed at this but it was all in good fun and the hunt had been put together pretty well if he had to say so himself. Glancing back over at Zophyr again, Tone flashed a smile in her direction. "Looks like you beat me, Z!" He said good-naturedly and let his eyes flicker around the area. "Hm, where should we go to build our snowmen? How about over there?" Tone asked.

He nodded towards a place nearby but not too close to the table. It looked like it had good structure. Moving over to the location, Tone reached down and started to roll some snow up together. "Want to help me gather some snow together? We can grab snow from the pile we make to make it easier for ourselves to make the smaller balls." He suggested to Zophyr and began to make the pile himself. After the pile was made, he headed over.

To a particularly snowy area and began to roll up a large ball for the base of the snowman. Once he'd gathered enough snow together, he rolled it towards his pack. After it was situated, Tone went about shaping the base into the most perfect round ball possible. He shaved off some snow here and there and took great care building it until it looked perfect in his eyes. The next move was to make the middle snowball that was slightly smaller.

At least smaller than the base. Tone used some of the snow from the pile the two of them had made together. Once he'd placed the middle snowball onto the larger one, he reached out to take some more snow off the pile and worked like an ice sculpture creator. Chipping here and there, removing some snow and adding some more snow, Tone had fun with creating this snowman. Eventually, it was time to place the smallest snowball on the top.

This one would complete the main structure. Taking some snow off the pile again, Tone molded the small snowball together and put it on the very top of the snowman. The skeleton was now done. He chipped at the snow and worked on the head making sure everything looked perfect and nothing was sticking out. Yes, this was the perfect snowman! Satisfied, Tone reached over to take the accessories out of his pack to use to dress it up a little.

Tone looked over the snowman for a few seconds and then got to work. First up were the set of buttons.

He placed them onto the midsection of the snowman in a vertical manner. Next was the most difficult action. The white haired teen stuck a stick on one side of the midsection and one stick on the other side of the midsection. But then, he reached down to take up some more snow and molded it into some snow fingers on each of the pointy ends of the sticks. That took a long time to do. Once Tone was done, he placed the mittens onto the fingers.

After that, he took the parsnip, a vegetable that resembled a carrot in all but the color, and stuck it into the top snowball head. It served as a very nice nose. Ah, right. Eyes. Tone reached over and picked up another two buttons and placed them onto the top snowball right above the parsnip nose. It was beginning to come together now, all that was left was dressing it up with some accessories. Tone twirled the scarf around the neck part of it all.

Once it had gone around the neck once, he adjusted the scarf in a stylish manner and then placed the top hat on the head to complete the look. He stood back to admire his work and smiled. Yes, this looked good to him. Tone glanced over at Zophyr. "How did you do?" The white haired beater asked curious. He couldn't help but wonder what all the other participants had done and what their creations looked like.

- Scavenger Hunt -
The scavenger hunt was only getting cooler and cooler for the young slytherin. Giving the organiser a wave, they immediately tore of to a clear circle of open group to start building that snowperson. Theirs was going to be the best to ever see the light of day and they would make sure of it. They began by rolling three gigantic balls of snow, packing them tightly so that they were at no risk of falling to peices. Then they heaved them on top of each other to form a tower. The skeleton was down.

Next was the fun part- details and decoration. This would make their snow person truly the most dapper of them all. Grabbing their stick and mittens from their makeshift bundle, they put together one arm. Perhaps they should have grabbed more sticks. No matter! It would be just as awesome one armed. Next came the scarf, which was tightly wrapped around its neck. To keep the snowperson nice and toasty, of course. Then the buttons for eyes and parsnip for nose, and a smile scraped out of the snow. And evil eyebrows. And a mustache. For the finishing touch, the top hat.

There. This snowperson would knock everyone else out of the park. Literally if necessary.

EmmaLee giggled at Stephen's impersonation of the infamous rabbit. Grinning widely, she booped the tip of Stephen's nose with the tip of her snowman's "nose". "Well, don't think your "wascally wabbit" ways 'ave gone unnoticed, Doc." She said, raising a pale eyebrow and nodding to his lack of top hat. She flipped her own top hat off of her head and plopped it onto Stephen's with a small chuckle. Admittedly, she had noticed that Stephen had walked away sans his own top hat, but was learning when to let a mystery remain a mystery, especially concerning man-with-a-plan Stephen Schwartz. He, generally, would reveal in time.

But she couldn't help but tease him that she knew that much.

"You look better in it than me, anyway." She said, admiring her handiwork, just as a girl walked out to greet all of the hunters present with an armful of scrolls. EmmaLee trotted over to retrieve their last scrolls, which did seem just a little superfluous given the girl's announcement that they were to make snowmen, as EmmaLee and Stephen had guessed, but it was fun anyway. It was a very well-put-together adventure and the riddles had all been really fun to figure out.

"Shall we begin?" EmmaLee asked, crouching down to gather a snowball together and begin rolling it around into the bottom of her snowman. She knew from winters in New York building snowmen with the gang that she really only had the capacity to make a bottom and a head, so she pushed her ball around the enchanted snow until she had a bottom that was about half as tall as she was. Then she repeated the process, but this time only making the ball big enough that she could still lift it with her noodle-y arms.

Once she had her snowman's body, she added the stick arms plus blue mittens, her carrot nose, two black button eyes, and one singular button mouth. EmmaLee smiled at her handiwork as she unwound her blue and yellow scarf from around her own neck and wound it around her snowman's before trotting over to retrieve her hat from Stephen.

"Thank you, good sir." She said with a giggle as she popped it off of his head and took off with it to pop it on her snowman's head. The final result created a snowman that, plus top hat, was just as tall as she was. EmmaLee splayed her arms over it towards Stephen with a bright "Ta-da!".

Zophyr couldn't help but let out a burst of laughter when the final task was revealed. Not by fireworks and a scroll, this time, but by a girl, an older year with her arms full of scrolls. The last riddle was not hard to decipher - you didn't need to go anywhere or choose anything. No, all you needed to do was build a snowperson. How had Zophyr missed it? She'd spent so much time complaining about the cold and the snow, while picking up a button, a scarf, a top hat, a carrot... of course it was snowperson material. She was embarrassed she had not realized it before now.

So she had indeed chosen the carrot correctly. In fact, everything else too. That was some consolation. Tone snapped her out of her thinking, saying she'd beat him. She frowned, the smile still on her face, a weird mix of both emotions. "Hey, you don't know that. We still have to make the snowpeople - maybe you'll make a shocking discovery that parsnip is actually a way better nose than carrots will ever be! I mean, it's the same color as the rest of the snowperson's face, right?" Laughing, she nodded when he suggested a spot to begin building, and the two got to work.

"Smart idea," she complimented, helping him gather snow into a pile, before starting her snowperson. She started it in the typical way - though she hadn't seen snow as often in her life as many of the people here, she knew how to make a snowperson at least - rolling the three spheres of snow, each smaller than the other, and piling them on top of each other.

But now, there was just one problem.

Zophyr had picked up a singular object in each place. Just one, never more. Which meant, right now, she had one stick, one scarf, one button, one mitten, one top hat, and one carrot. This was going to be difficult: not only would her snowperson only have one arm and one hand, but it would also be missing an eye, its mouth, and any buttons down its front.

Well! That could be problematic. But Zophyr, being Zophyr, did not care enough to let it bring them down. Their snowperson would definitely be unique, that was for sure!

The one button went into the center of the snowperson's face - this was going to be a cyclops, apparently. Then the top hat went on its head, the scarf around its neck, and the carrot under its eye. Zophyr decided it was missing ears (why she decided this, she was not sure, but impulse decisions were kind of her thing) so she made some out of snow, and added an eyebrow above the eye. This was definitely a cyclops. A very distinguished one, considering the top hat. Actually... that gave her an idea.

Zophyr took the scarf off of her snowperson, tying it into a few knots before it looked somewhat like a bowtie. Satisfied, she stuck the bowtie back onto the snowperson's neck; perfect. Now for the arm. Or arms, actually - the Uagadou student decided that her stick was long enough to snap in half, giving her snowman two arms. The problem now was the mitten, because that could not be snapped in half, but Zophyr quickly decided that wearing only one glove was just as fashionable as the top hat and bowtie, so that worked out great and she stuck the mitten onto the snowperson's right arm. If only it had been a glove, but oh well, a mitten would have to work.

Zophyr took a step back to admire her work. A magnificent, well-dressed, distinguished snow cyclops. She couldn't have been happier. Looking over at Tone, she found that he, too, had finished, though he'd had the good sense to take more than one button, stick and mitten. She wasn't jealous, though - she quite liked her cyclops. "I'm pretty happy with mine! Yours looks awesome, though. Do they have a name? Mine will be called..." she paused, before grinning mischievously. "Telus." Her brother now had a cyclops named after him. She couldn't wait to tell him.
