The day of downhill broom sledding was upon them! In addition to Quidditch and sports and generally just having the opportunity to get out of the country, the one thing that Greta consistently looked forward to during these excursions to Great Britain, was the events. Credit had to be given where credit was owed—these Hogwarts students really knew how to be creative. For years she had attended these events. Whether a camp or a dance or something else entirely, she couldn't recall, really, a single time where something felt old or unoriginal. Sure, there were some events that were recycled a number of times—spin the bottle came to mind—but they were the surefire favourites and always had their own twist.
This year, however, was something else entirely. Fall. Spring. Summer. These were the seasons during which time international students were given grace to make the trip to Hogwarts or its surrounding countryside. Never, as far as she could recall, had they visited during the winter months, making this particular summer camp with its enchanted—and enchanting—weather all the more unique and awe-inspiring. In many ways, it felt a lot like home. It would be a summer where she could really tap into her roots and play out a childhood that was almost well and departed. Naturally, therefore, she had signed up for every event she could get her chilly little mitts on, eagerly springing from her bed every morning in anticipation for that which came next.
Today, it was the sled race's turn, and she was even more eager to participate than she had been when her name had been inked onto the sign-up sheet. The previous days had revealed a number of shocking revelations, ones that had left her more than a little bit shaken. She had found it a bit difficult to get back on her feet yesterday, spending a great majority of the day in something of a delayed shock, disoriented and boggled as to how she could be so blind to the struggle of those closest to her. And just how precarious their situation had become. Somehow, it hadn't resulted in complete disaster, but nevertheless, it left her rattled and eager to smother the fear and shame with fond memories. And what better way to do just that than with a heaping dose of adrenaline inspired dopamine.
Bright eyed and grinning ear to ear with a tinge of rouge to cheeks and nose giving credence to the chilly atmosphere, Greta gleefully kicked up snow as she made her way to the event. She threw a breathless "Thank you!" in the direction of a young boy who seemed to hold more authority for the organization of the race than she would initially have given him credit for, then joined the rest in making her way into position. Teeth snagged at her lower lip as she craned her neck trying to glimpse through the rest of those gathered at the pathing options available to her. There was a wide path that several students seemed to be filtering towards and another littered with trees, but it was the one whose path she couldn't even see initially, the one where the lip seemed to disappear into nothingness, the one that made her heart leap and her gut churn, that drew her near.
And she wasn't alone. Sliding between a young student with curly brown hair (@Colby Vidler) and another about the same age as the first with wild blonde hair and a pug nose (@Oonagh Brown) Greta moved into position at the lip of the steep and narrow slope. "This is to be very exciting!" Beaming, she settled into her sled, ready to kick off at the sound of the signal to start. "Hans!" She called to a boy (@Archer Duncan as Hans Jenssen) next to one of the nearby girls, recognizing him as one of the younger Durmstrang students. Switching to Russian, the language of education at their institution, she inquired with a mischievous waggle of gloved fingers in his direction, "would you like to make this even more fun with a wager of some sort? If I beat you, you have to play a little prank on someone of my choice, yea?"

EmmaLee yawned as she woke up and rubbed her eyes blearily, looking over to the camp itinerary that she had glue-charmed to the tent next to her sleeping bag. Today was "Downhill Broom Sledding". Hmmm. She had endeavored to find out exactly what they meant by that at the very least, even if she decided to just watch instead of participate. She still didn't really care for riding on a broom, and she didn't really expect any kind of race to change that, even broom racing itself.
She got up, dressed, and headed out of the tent, leaving her tentmates and her cat, Minx, to their snoozing. Once she had grabbed a breakfast sandwich from the food area, she headed over to where this "broom sledding" was supposed to be happening.
EmmaLee trudged up to the starting line and took a good look around. It seemed not so much a broom race as just a magical sled race. She raised a pale eyebrow curiously as she stared down the different paths and the sleds. She could tell that the sleds were magical somehow. Were they all charmed to go a certain speed? Were they charmed to dodge obstacles on their own? If she decided to join, did it matter which sled she picked or were they all the same?
Similar questions came to mind about the different paths. One took off through a forest of trees, and that didn't seem like a very logical path, if one wanted to win. Maybe if one just wanted a fun ride down the mountain that the planning committee had somehow wedged into the Stadium. There was also a steep path, which would probably be good for speed, but not very good for maintaining control of your sled, if you could control your own sled and it wasn't charmed to just take off with you. Lastly, there was a wide path that snaked down the mountain.
Frankly, the whole thing looked rather fun and EmmaLee decided to go ahead and grab a sled. Normally she could be rather competitive but after having an unexpectedly busy past few days and in expectation of the real competitions she had already signed up for, a nice non-competitive sled down a hill sounded like a good time.
With that in mind, she bypassed the more logical steep slope and positioned her sled at the beginning of the wide path with the thought that if she did win, that would just be a bonus to her having a good time.

❂ ⌜ A Summer Camp Tale: Downhill Broom Sledding ⌟ ❂
❂ July 19, 2024 ▎ --:-- ❂▪ ◚ ◚ ◚ ❂ ◚ ◚ ◚ ▪If there was an activity that Raizel had been looking forward to after seeing the list of activities, it was this, Downhill Broom Sledding. Sounds dangerous and scary but for this Gryffindor who is on her quest on finding thrilling activities to spend her time on, it was perfect. She had been waiting for this day to come, immediately rushing out from the comfort of their warm, beach themed tent as soon as she heard that the sign up for the event was fully launched, dressed warmly, of course. She is donning her usual black hooded jacket and black pants and this time, has her Gryffindor scarf and her hat. It was a challenge, however, to find the sign up area as she isn’t known for her good sense of direction. Still, she made it in one piece and didn’t end up somewhere else.
There were already other people when she reached the sign up area and she sure hopes that this activity doesn't have any limits when it comes to participants. The one in charge was a familiar person, someone that she met by chance back at Hogwarts. What was his name again? Tom-something Patterson. Ah, Tommy, right. Names are tricky to remember, especially when you don't see them everyday. In any case, Raizel just gave him a friendly smile but who knows, perhaps he had forgotten all about her already. Their meeting was probably not that memorable. After that, she had wasted no time climbing up the mountain with the equipment that the event planner lent to her.
The climb better be worth it.
Looking down, it's probably a long way back to the foot and a dangerous one at that but that's exactly what she's here for. For the danger, for the thrill. It's the only way to get her mind off of things that she wants to forget for now, to feel something again, even if it's pain. Knowing her and her bad luck, she knows there is no way that she'll come out of this event unscathed. What's another visit to the hospital wing? Do they even have a healing tent here or something? Well, she sure hopes she won't find out the hard way.
With her non-existent luck, it would've been a better choice to stay on paths that are… less dangerous but of course, Raizel will always take the risky one to challenge it. It's definitely her stupid bravery that's speaking at the moment but then again, she has always been one to face danger and challenges with courage and determination. Again, for the thrill and excitement and no pain, no gain, right? That thought made her grin. “Now then, what misfortunes are you gonna throw at me this time…” she uttered as she got into position, eyes on her chosen path. It was a bit hard to see who else had chosen the same path but she swore there were people that she recognized. Guess she’ll just see once they cross paths.▪ ▫ ◙ 500/200 ◙ ▫ ▪

"You wish," Oonagh shouted back at the brunette with the curly bob. Another few kids were there to cause trouble and Oonagh huffed. She would show them for sure, or would go down trying. "Eat snow, snowflake," she called back, before speeding up to reclaim the course. That was at least until another person rushed past her and flung a bunch of snow at her, which of course, Oonagh would not allow to happen without striking back. Especially after hearing the laughter that followed.
She dipped forward to speed up to a risky, perhaps daredevil way and upon passing the ginger who had dared and, without feeling a tiny bit sorry, reached out and flipped over her sled. "Better hold on tight, these mountains are dangerous, 'accidents' happen!" She called out, before making an effort to get ahead. Ramming as many people as she could along the way. If anything they deserved this, did they not? And even if they hadn't actively challenged her, she needed the drama and chaos almost as much as she needed oxygen, perhaps even more. She did not care that it was probably not very wise to start a fight with everyone on the course, but surely this would be fineeee... and if they wanted to cry about it, then they better hurry up to catch up with her, 'Mischief' was her middle name!

Stephen had managed, even with a very full summer schedule, to get quite a lot of studying done the past few days. Mostly it was in the mornings after his run and shower. He found that by that time, those who were going to get up and eat had already made themselves ready to do so and were gone from the tent. Those who were more inclined to hit the proverbial snooze button 10-15 times were there in the tent with him, but were quiet and therefore no true distraction. He had taken to grabbing his food and eating it while studying at lunch and breakfast in his area, for the most part. Dinner time he always had with everyone else. Even he needed a break every once in a while.
But the Broom Sledding event had sounded like more fun than he could pass up. It was one event he and EmmaLee had not really spoken about because he knew she was no fan of flying on a broom. Even though this would not be on a broom, at least he didn't think it would be, he bargained that she was out with Minx and/or meeting up with other friends she had not seen for too long. When his alarm clock went off, he hurriedly closed his Trigonometry textbook, grabbed his fleece jacket and his wand, and he was off.
When he got to the base of the snow-capped mountain, he could have sworn it looked as authentic as any ski resort he had ever visited, and he had visited a lot. He was pretty able on skis, but had truthfully never been on a sled but a few times. He read the instructions and the descriptions of the slopes. The Forest of Trees was a hard no right out of the gate. That left a moderately problematic choice between the Steep and Narrow slope or the Wide and Windy one. Practicality and safety screamed that the Wide and Windy would be the way to go, but he was itching for something more than "safe" right now. If he got hurt, there was magic after all. "Decision made," and he walked over to the table to sign up.
As he approached, he saw a kid who looked a year or two younger than him standing behind the table. Even though he was wearing no name tag and there wasn't a sign above his head with a big red arrow pointing down at him saying 'Tommy Patterson', Stephen felt more than certain he must be. There was, literally, no one else standing there doling out sleds. "So the directions say that I'm to get my sled from one Tommy Patterson. I'm assuming you'd be the man I'm looking for? I'll take the slowest one, please, if you'd be so kind. Makes it more impressive when this is all over and I'm waiting at the bottom for everyone else," and he chuckled good-naturedly. "See, that right there just jinxed the whole thing, no doubt." Stephen shook his head solemnly, even though his grin never quite disappeared and his eyes twinkled with mirth.
With a sled finally in hand, he headed towards the path leading to the Steep and Narrow slope. He looked one last time over his shoulder towards Tommy, and then stopped and turned fully back towards him. Pointing to his own face he quipped, "Remember this face in case of an avalanche or a wrong turn into a cavernous abyss. I'll have been the guy riding a purple sled," and just then he brought his wand from his pocket and cast a perfect "Colorvaria" onto the mundane, wood stained sled. "See ya on the flip side," and just like that, he gave a quick, two finger, civilian salute from his brow and turned to quickstep it up the slope.
He was surprised, though he really shouldn't have been, to have seen the well trodden path up to this slope. No one was there when he got to the top, but quite a few people had already ventured forth as he could hear them taunting each other. He tossed his sled down into the snow, stowed his wand safely away, and zipped up his fleece. Moving the sled back and forth a couple of times with one foot, he surveyed the slope briefly. It wasn't exactly compacted into an icy sluice just yet, but it was getting there. That would really put on the speed, so he wondered if those who had gone ahead of him had unwittingly done him a favor. He brought his broom racing goggles up from around his neck and over his eyes. Three deep breaths later, he had jumped onto the sled in a head first, prone position, and decided to bullet train it down.
"May not be the smart choice, but I bet it's gonna be the fuNnnNNnNNnN onnNNnNnnNNnnnnNNNne.

Roleplaying as Hans Jenssen
Hans was not particularly surprised to be recognised in this activity, considering the tightknit nature of Durmstrang and his popularity among them. The first of Hans' schoolmates to join him was Durmstrang's very own Norweigian Valkyrie, as she was known, delicate, with cascades of honey gold locks and ice-blue eyes, fitting, considering her heritage. In her pink coat and oversized blue scarf, she called to the German lad, waggling her finger playfully, 'Hans, would you like to make this even more fun with a wager of some sort? If I beat you, you have to play a little prank on someone of my choice, yea?' Turning his head to properly look at her, Hans replied in the same volume and language with a jestingly disappointed tone, 'Oh Greta, our darling Valkyrie, you know I would play a prank any day. Someone needs to give the dreary snow of the Institute a little sparkle, after all. But,' he said, pausing playfully, 'What's in it for me? Now, that's the question.'
As they sped on, the wind was a most welcome melody. With the Institute being dead in the mountains, he was attuned finely enough to the harsh familiarity of nature’s orchestra. Therefore, when the blonde called something out in response to Hans' taunts, her reply was lost to the boreal winds as her sled sped down the treacherous path. However, she soon proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with as she proceeded to flip the sled of a ginger-haired, pale-skinned girl roughly Hans' age or a year younger, without even the slightest of hesitation, a fierce move that Hans, admittedly, approved of. 'Let's go, kid!' He shouted at her, hoping that the gales would carry his voice towards her instead of scattering it. 'You've got this!' He said, hoping to form some sort of alliance with the ferocious, hot-blooded young lady. Even if that does not work out the way he hoped, he could always, you know, just casually flip her sled.

It seemed that Colby was not alone in taunting and competitiveness. Listening to others taunting her back had only made her adrenaline rise. She had never participated in a sport like this before, and was looking forward to trying it. Colby wondered if anyone else had done broom sledding before. If they had, perhaps Colby was too premature to taunt others.
The girl that Colby taunted had responded back quickly. Colby couldn't help but the laugh at the thought of possibly getting to the girl. Maybe she would mess up somewhere.
Colby could not help but to smirk at the second person who taunted her first. They had dark hair and light skin. "I know what I'm doing, do you?" she retorted with a lie. This would definitely give her the persona of knowing how to play the game. Perhaps that would make her look intimidating to beat.
It seemed that more were joining the narrow and steep path. Colby noticed an older girl that joined them and knew someone else who was readying themselves. The only catch was that the person was speaking in a different language. Colby remembered that the camp was filled with peers from different schools, not just Hogwarts. Unfortunately, as much as Colby had wanted to listen in, she had no idea what was being said, nor did she know what language it was.
The feeling of the cool breeze against Colby's face was a rush in itself. For a moment, she wanted to just relax down the steep hill, but she knew she had to focus and win. Luckily, Colby focused in time. She began to see that the girl she taunted in the beginning was starting to slam into other players to get them down. "You're crazy!" she called out to the girl. Colby, having no idea what the heck to do, tried to slow herself down or move away from her. The last thing she needed was to be out of the game the minute they started!

![]() | ── | This was the best one of the bunch! When Tone noticed the event of downhill sledding he'd immediately signed up for the race. It didn't even matter whether he won or lost, as long as he could participate in the event because it sounded like it would be a blast either way! Plus, doing such a thing during summer time, that rocked! There was nothing quite like playing around in snow during the hottest months of summer and Tone was going to fully take advantage of this. A first year, nearly a second year, was the one in charge of this particular event and Tone smiled at him. He didn't know him but then didn't know a lot of people who went to Hogwarts. But that would definitely change after this! Tone went over to choose one of the provided sleds and smiled at Tommy, coming over to give him a brief hug even though he didn't know him. But the blond had always been a rather touchy kind of person. "Thanks for setting this up for us, it looks fun. I'm Tone. You are?" Tone asked with another smile. Once introductions had been made, Tone headed back over to the sled he'd chosen and placed it at the top of the mountain. Letting his eyes flicker over the three courses laid out before him, the blond didn't really have to spend much time deciding on the path he wanted to take. Of course, Tone chose the steep and narrow slope. Why wouldn't he? It would give a great thrill to start things off and even if it became slower later, at least he'd have a great start which was all that mattered. He might even speed up later too. |

Aurélie had been waiting for this event forever. Adrenaline rush? A little bit of danger? Scenic views? What was not to like? Besides, the people who were monitering the extremely excitable students wouldn't let them get hurt, right? With considerably more energy than many of the others, Aurélie skipped to the top of the slope, eyeing the different paths as she went.
There were different options, each one meant for the different things people were looking for from this activity. The slow, scenic path for those who wanted to admire the wintry wonderland. The fast-paced, narrow path for the thrill seekers. And, of course, the in between level.
Aurélie observed the happenings, silently choosing to go down the fastest, most exciting path to offer. After all, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and the French girl wasn't going to waste it. She was ready for whatever adventure was about to come.
Having never tried a broom sport for her school, opting instead to duel, Aurélie was beyond excited to try something different and sled with a broom. Reaching the top of the hill, she grabbed a sled at random from the boy who was passing them out.
As Aurélie was making her way to the steep and narrow slope, the one she'd been wanting to go on, she spotted a familiar face. One that she'd met at the spring ball when her first year had still been in session. EmmaLee! The French girl who attended Hogwarts.
Changing direction to follow the older student, Aurélie walked a bit faster to catch up. "EmmaLee! EmmaLee!" Running a bit, she caught the girl laying her sled down on a different path and getting ready to go.
Aurélie laid her own sled next to EmmaLee's, thinking not about how she was on a different path than she'd intended to be on, only about how her friend who she hadn't seen since the ball was here, next to her. Does she consider me her friend? Does she even remember me? Hopefully! Aurélie sat down on her sled before turning to the other girl.
"Salut, EmmaLee!" Hi, EmmaLee! Aurélie grinned. "It's nice to see you again. How are you enjoying summer camp so far? Which tent are you in?"
She stopped for a moment, sheepish at having bombarded the Hogwarts student with speech. Hopefully she didn't feel uncomfortable.
