Bonfire Night
July 17th, 2024𝐖hile the false winter’s bitter chill may have seeped its way into the rest of the summer camp, a far more traditional camp experience could be found over where the bonfire night was being held underneath the watchful gaze of the away team’s quaffle hoops. A large swath of warm, surprisingly snow-and-ice-free grass had been cleared out for the occasion, and the sounds of laughter and merriment could be heard from all but the farthest of tents. The whole area was lit by both the glow of the mountainous bonfire, as well as some floating orbs of soft, hazy white light, giving the area a safe and almost sleepy ambiance. The central attraction, the aforementioned bonfire, was a great deal larger in size than a standard bonfire and charmed to display a myriad of shapes in its multi-coloured flames. Surrounding the bonfire was a whole assortment of various seating arrangements: rugged, oaken log benches; plump, colourful cushions; a scattered assortment of tattered, well-worn loveseats; some tacky muggle folding chairs; blankets big enough to host whole groups of friends; and, the furthest distance away from the fire, some cleverly charmed trees that had been carefully grown into the shape of beautiful, if not especially comfortable, armchairs.
The ingredients for s’mores were scattered all about the area, and if you weren’t careful, you’d be likely to step on a stray marshmallow or two. For anyone who was feeling hungry that evening, stations were set up to provide enticing-looking popcorn and hot cocoa, functioning as a sort of age-appropriate open bar where all were welcome to help themselves to as much as they could stomach. Magical firecrackers, charmed to be heat-free and relatively harmless, were available in all kinds of shapes and colours, such as red and gold dragons that lit up the night sky, long, shimmering silver waves that crackled in the cool night air and danced around your head, and personal hand-held sparklers charmed to change colours with your mood.
Near the edge of the event, in a darker corner where the tree-grown chairs resided, was a collection of scary story anthologies. A handful of the more macabre and eager-eyed students clustered together in this area, competing to see who could tell the scariest story. The lighting was dimmer out here on the fringes, with just the residual glow of the bonfire and the occasional flickering of fireflies to set the mood, and while the same laughter that acted as a backdrop for the rest of the event was still very much present here, every so often a good enough story would prompt a barrage of delighted – and perhaps some rather undelighted – screams.
The Summer Camp Committee humbly welcomes you to Bonfire Night.

Bonfire Night
OPEN TO INTERACTIONS
@Septimus Merrill
Tonight was the proposed traditional bonfire night of summer camp. From what she heard from older year passersby was that there was always a bonfire where students can hang out with each other and a chance to share scary stories. Colby wasn't exactly the type of person who indulges in horror, but it did sound intriguing. Though, her interest was really about making s'mores. There was just something about making this delicious treat that really called to Colby. Maybe because she would make them with her family for fun during some of their summers? Who knows. One thing is for sure is that it brought out the natural child in her.
Colby dressed in her pant jeans and a light blue short sleeved shirt. The last thing she needed was to be freezing cold during another winter summer camp event. This time, to some extent, she was going to be prepared. She was chilled to the bone during the feast. This time, her legs and shoulders will be covered to provide warmth in the snow.
Once Colby was ready, she left her tent and made her way to the field of the stadium. When she had gotten there, she saw that the entire field was drastically different. In the middle was a gigantic fire and around it were various seats from wooden chairs to pillowed loveseats. It circled around the bonfire and stretched as far back as the field's boundary. She could even spot a section of the field that was made for an intimidate circle. Perhaps meant for those interested in sharing and listening to scary stories. But the most important part that was drastically different? There was no sign of snow. Now that was definitely magic.
If anything, the eleven year old had just dressed for slightly cold weather. Now, it was warmer than expected, and this began to piss off Colby. Pick one stupid season! she raged, the eyebrows creasing in irritation. To Colby, it was now too late to go back and get dressed. She was already here and she wanted s'mores.
She made her way towards the center of the bonfire, despite everything getting hotter. She was not going to sit far back from the action. The best part of a bonfire was the crackling of the wood slowly burning and the smell of wood in the process. Colby looked around and saw that there were a few open seats. She walked over to a plush chair with an ottoman. So far, it was the perfect spot. Not only was it comfortable, but the seats to each side of her were vacant. It felt like she had the experience to herself. Nearby, there was a small table with all the ingredients needed for s'mores including tools such as extra-long kabob sticks.
Colby went over and grabbed a marshmallow from the pile and placed it on the stick. Carefully, she went towards the large fire and stretched out her arm for the marshmallow to be immersed by the fire. As a Wizard-born with a mother who is Muggle-Born, Colby had many moments of embracing her muggle side of life. But really, she had no idea of how to do magic, so this was her best bet for s'more results.
There were different kinds of people when it came to roasting marshmallows: some enjoy a gentle burn while others love it with an edgy crisp. Colby was the latter, allowing her marshmallow live in the fires for far too long. When she felt ready, she brought her marshmallow out of the fire, allowing the delectable to still be on fire with a small ember at the top. Her marshmallow, once white, was now a charcoal black. Within a few seconds, the ember at the top of her marshmallow, naturally extinguished itself, and Colby knew it was ready for the next step.
She grabbed a large square of graham cracker, and she gently scraped the marshmallow against it, making sure not to crack the cracker. The crunch of the marshmallow against the graham cracker was satisfying. Once it was fully off the stick, she placed the tool down and grabbed a piece of chocolate, squishing it into her melted black and white goo. Lastly, another graham cracker on top, and now she had her s'more ready to eat. She made her way back to the same chair with ottoman and got cozy.
Taking a bite of her s'more, she was in heaven. She did not even care of chocolate was smeared on the sides of her lips. S'mores were never a clean treat to begin with. As she was about to take another bite, she saw someone rearing close, and if she guessed, they were maybe about to sit in the chair right next to her. But of course, Colby was unsure of their intentions, but wanted to make sure they picked a different seat as she enjoyed the space she had.
"Hey you, someone is sitting here," she lied, hopefully repelling them away from the chair, if that was their intention. Colby was sure that even if she lied, her plan would work.

BONFIRE NIGHT
- July 17, 2024 -interacting with @Colby Vidler /// open to interactionsSEPTIMUS let his nose lead him to the bonfire, following the smell of smoke and — much more enticing — the smell of popcorn. As the snow gave way to proper green grass under his feet, he tugged his scarf off his neck and stuffed it into his coat pocket, then shed the coat as well, hanging it over one arm. It was like the heat of the blaze had brought summer back to this small section of the stadium for the night. Septimus approved. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate this year's theme, but he was still getting used to dressing for Christmastime in July. And he did think it was a bit unfair that he was losing out on so many precious warm days before shipping up to Hogwarts in the fall, where he was surely destined for a long stretch of cold, dreary weather.
The bonfire cast shadows across Septimus's back as he skirted around it in search of snacks. He spotted a table piled high with bags of popcorn and set a course for it right away. A few other campers had helped themselves, but it looked like there was more than enough for everyone to have their fill. Would they have caramel corn? It was his favourite flavour — the sweeter, the better. He didn't get to have it very often, since his mother said it could only be bad for him (and his teeth), but his father was more willing to indulge the boy and usually brought a bag or two with him when he came home from business trips to America. It was always a small comfort to know that, if Mr. Merrill had to go, he would at least return with a treat.
Septimus knew he might not get his hands on popcorn again for a long time, especially if whoever was overseeing the table decided he wasn't allowed to have seconds. With that in mind, he took a moment to study his choices, trying to determine which had the most value — best-smelling, best-looking, highest amount of kernels per bag, etc. — and finally picked a worthy batch. He thought it sure looked like caramel corn. Turning away from the table, he grabbed a fistful of golden-brown popcorn and stuffed it all into his mouth. Mmmm. Sweet, alright. He relished the opportunity provided by the lack of parental supervision to lick his fingers, even: something he was never supposed to do at home. It was not polite.
With his bag of popcorn clutched close to his chest, where he could easily scoop another handful of the stuff into his mouth, Septimus approached the bonfire. The flames were twisting themselves into all types of enthralling, magical shapes in every color. They danced in Septimus's eyes, calling him closer and closer to the blaze. They warmed his face. Quickly, though, that warmth turned to heat, and he had to shut his eyes against it. And when even that wasn't enough to make standing so close to the edge of the bonfire more tolerable, Septimus made a (very wise) decision and took a step back.
In the process, he bumped against the leg of a folding chair — popular among Muggles, he knew, but he had no idea why — and heard a familiar voice. "Hey you, someone is sitting here."
Septimus turned to see one of his tentmates sitting in a chair next to the one he'd walked into. Her name was Colby. He knew that, but he didn't know anything else about her besides the fact that she seemed very, very blunt. It was hard to tell if she recognized him, although after two nights spent sleeping in the same tent, he figured that the odds of it were pretty good. He thought about saying hi. Then he remembered that she'd just tried to get him to go away.
"Really?" he replied, looking at Colby and then frowning at the empty chair. "It doesn't look like it. Everyone knows you have to leave something behind if you're going to save a seat. Like this." He laid his coat over the back of the chair, carefully arranging the sleeves so that they wouldn't drag on the ground. When he was sure that it wouldn't get dirty, he sat down in the chair and started talking again. "Anyway, there's no one sitting on the other side of you — whoever you're waiting for can go there. And... sorry, but what are you eating?"
It wasn't Septimus's first time seeing a s'more, although the dessert was a novelty to him. He'd never actually made one himself. No, what was startling to him was the state of Colby's marshmallow, which oozed out from the confines of the graham cracker and looked to be more ash than sugar. Was it even edible? Well, clearly, it was, since she had taken a big bite of it already. But it confused and disturbed Septimus to think that someone would burn a marshmallow to that extent and still decide to stick it with some chocolate. "Doesn't that taste... gross?" he asked, eyeing Colby's s'more with unveiled suspicion. "It looks like charcoal."
He didn't know why he was making a big deal out of the marshmallow, especially when it wasn't like she was forcing him to eat it. He had his own bag of caramel corn, anyway. But some things can't be ignored — and this was one of them.

Bonfire Night

Interacting with @Aleksandra FairBairn
Tommy went to bonfire night to check out... well... the fire, what else? To his surprise, he just so happened to stumble upon his favourite house and tent mate (although if he stumbled upon any tent mate, he would proclaim them to be his favourite). "Aleks! Aleks! Aleks! OVER HERE!" Tommy shouted a little louder than he meant to.
Tommy pushed his way through the crowd until he reached Aleks. She seemed to be enthralled with the fire. People often said that flames danced. "How do you think fire manages to dance without music? Isn't it hard to carry a beat without a tune?" Tommy wondered aloud to Aleks. This was half a joke and half a serious statement.
Aleks seemed to be alone, nothing out of the ordinary, but maybe the heat of the fire would warm up her normally icy personality. Tommy flung his arms above his head and began to move his hips from left to right, swinging his arms in the opposite direction to no semblance of a beat. "See don't you think it's rather hard? Why don't you give it a shot?" Tommy reached for the platinum blonde's hands to try to make her dance to no music with him.
He had promised, prior to summer camp, to make it eventful for her and memorable. Surely, she would enjoy this dancing with her self-proclaimed best friend renowned seer favourite housemate. Making a fool of himself would be worth it if it meant the girl would smile or laugh, even if it was laughing at him instead of with him. One thing Tommy had going for him was that he liked to get on the dance floor and shake that little butt of his. As for his skill level at dancing... He would be lucky if it were described as having two left feet. To him it was more important to have fun dancing and listen to your soul and let the rhythm take you, unfortunately, there was no music here so that was rather difficult and awkward.

Casey sat back in one of the multitude of chairs with one knee pressed against his chest, his arms wrapped tightly around his leg as he let the heat of the bonfire engulf him. His jumper clung to his frame while a small draft of cold air tickled the ends of his jeans as he swung his free leg loosely by the foot of the chair. He couldn't believe it. He was hoping he had seen the last of her after their initial encounter back in the muggle world. Yet despite being pissed over the fact that a certain girl who he didn't want anything to do with was now at summer camp too - the same space that he would now have to spend the rest of summer catching sight of her whilst he was here - he found a brief breath of gracious solitude as he sat with the burning embers of the fire in front of him.
He had lifted a small handful of caramel popcorn to accompany his silent alone time, nibbling on a piece every now and then as the night continued. It was pitch black outside aside from the glow of the fire and the snow beneath his feet. For the first time in a long while, Casey felt somewhat content. He found himself content with just staring off into the blazing flames, the smoke scratching at the edges of his eyes, forcing them to narrow slightly. The longer he sat there the more closed off he felt to the world. Nothing mattered except where he was right now. Every thought he had right then... Her... His brother... they were all cast into the fire in that moment. Casey couldn't remember the last time he was able to abandon his thoughts like that. It was certainly a rare luxury that's for sure. Otherwise he may as well just be sitting there as the smoke enveloped him like his memories of his beloved Nick would be every waking moment of his life.
Casey inhaled the air and lightly rested his head on his arm. The tranquil atmosphere was enough to put him to sleep if he wanted to. Instead he sat back up and continued eyeing the fire, determined to keep on burning the demons in his head as long as he could before they would be due to come back when it would inevitably be put out.

Rachel's heart pounded as she made her way to the bonfire. She had overheard several students excitedly discussing making s'mores, telling stories, and enjoying the smell and view of a bonfire. She had dressed for the occasion, wearing a cozy scarf and a woolen sweater to keep warm in the cool air.
As she approached the bonfire, her eyes widened with delight. The large, colorful flames danced and twisted into various shapes, casting a mesmerizing glow over the crowd. The area was already filled with several students, and the smell of roasting marshmallows and popcorn filled her nostrils, making her stomach growl.
As she navigated through the students, a small pile of s'mores ingredients caught her eye. She grabbed the ingredients, hands full, and looked for a place to sit. As she scanned the crowd, she saw a boy sitting alone in one of the many chairs scattered around the fire. The boy looked pensive, his knee pressed against his chest and his arms wrapped around his leg, a picture of loneliness in the midst of the crowd.
He looked lost in the darkness, watching the flames. Rachel's natural curiosity compelled her to make her way over to him. She didn't know him but figured everyone could use a friend, especially at camp.
Rachel walked over to him with a newly acquired bag of s'mores ingredients. As she approached, she noticed he had a small handful of caramel popcorn, one of her favorite snacks.
"Hi there," she chirped, stopping a few feet away to gauge his reaction. "Would you Mind if I joined you?"
Without waiting for a response, she sat in a nearby chair and placed her bag on her lap. "I'm Rachel," she introduced herself, pulling out her marshmallows, crackers, and chocolate. If you'd like some, I grabbed plenty of s'mores ingredients from the snack table."
She lifted a marshmallow and a cracker to show him she had plenty if he wanted to share.

| ⋆ ✩ ☾ ✩ ⋆ enter | ─────The first few days of summer camp had passed in a rush. Ruby felt like so much had happened the last few days, and was in need of some quiet time to herself. She left her tent to go on a stroll through the camp, exploring everything there was. But it seemed she wasn’t the only one with that thought. A lot of students were out tonight. Ruby looked at them a little better. They all seemed to go in the same direction. She followed their path with her eyes and saw a giant bonfire at the end of the Stadium. Oh, nice. A bonfire! I forget that was this evening. She entered the stream of students heading that direction, and searched for some familiar faces. Sometimes she saw a glimpse of one, but they were too far away. But that wasn’t so bad, she would find someone there. As she reached the site for the bonfire, she saw that multiple seats were already taken. She spotted the open bars and quickly made her way towards the nearest one. The smell of fresh popcorn was too delicious to turn down. She picked up a bucket and filled it with warm popcorn. Next to that there were piles of marshmallows and graham crackers to makes s’mores. She took a bunch of those too. It seemed a bit much for one person, but she would look for someone to share all of this with. A bonfire and making s’mores was not something to be doing alone. She approached the fire, and with every step she felt the heat washing over her. She smiled and took place on a sofa near the fire. She liked the crackling of the wood and the dancing of the flames. She could sit for hours near the fire and just watch the flames dance all night. She dropped all the sweets on a nearby table and took some long sticks to roast the marshmallows. She wanted to wait for someone to share all the treats with, but the smell of the roasting marshmallows around her temped her too much. She pricked a marshmallow on a stick and put it in the fire. When it was done, she put it between two graham crackers and enjoyed the gooey and sweet taste. | ⋆ ✩ ☾ ✩ ⋆ enter |

Even if she was lying, could no one have taken the hint that she did not want the company? Alas, the boy in front of her did not get the memo and instead took on the seat that was 'taken' with the excuse that nothing was left behind to save it. "It could have been my word of mouth that saves it for someone," she said, her tone sounding like a know-it-all. That didn't stop him from laying his coat over the chair to sit down next to her. Well that was a bust.
Now that he was closer, Colby was able to get a good look from him. He was not just some random boy attending the camp. He happened to be one of her tent mates. But which one? There were so many, and being only the beginning of camp, it was hard to keep track. "Are you the guy with the fish or the rock collection?" she asked. Colby knew for sure that he wasn't the one with the telescope as that guy would be too giddy on life, and this guy seemed calm. For the life of her, however, she could not remember his name. Maybe if she was given a hint or even the list of tent mates, she could put a finger on it, but right out random, not a clue.
Colby took another bite of her delicious and crunchy s'more that was now cooling down from the hot marshmallow when she was questioned. She looked at the boy with her eyes open wide, judging his judgement of her food choice. She chewed and swallowed as fast as she could. "It's a s'more. A delicious, messy and gooey treat. But of course you don't know what's good if you're sticking with some crappy, stale popcorn," she said, eyeing his food of choice.
And of course, this guy kept going, now eyeing the state of her marshmallow which was completely blackened on her graham cracker sandwich. Colby could have made the cancer joke, a popular muggle thought regarding things that are burnt that her mom would always say, but she figured that maybe this guy would not understand. "Burnt is a flavor, and I like it."
She looked at his popcorn bag and then at the different s'more ingredients that was near them. Colby rolled her eyes to herself and put her delicious s'more on the armrest of her chair, closest to him, and got up. If he would let her, she would come up to him and grab his nasty bag of popcorn from his hands, take a piece to try, and pour the rest out onto the floor. As she predicted, it was gross. Even the smell of the popcorn was stale, and her sense of smell was superb for obvious reasons. Dropping the bag onto the pile of popcorn, Colby took her half-bitten s'more and shoved it towards the boy. "Take a bite or shut up about it," she said, harshly. Her green eyes staring at his. "Or are you too scared?" And of course, a taunt never hurt.
