Department of Mysteries | Cabin of Arcane ArchivesFencing was an unfamiliar sport for the Wizarding world. Although the idea of it was always bound by aristocrats or people who had significant taste, which may not seem that unfamiliar after all. It is more than hitting targets, as Fencing is often called "chess at the speed of light." Every attack is a question; every parry is an answer.
On the other half of the training area, significantly separated from the others by a series of low wooden barriers, lies the fencing area. Two narrow strips of packed earth, measuring 14 meters long and 2 meters wide, make up the perfect setup for an intense match. Surrounding this are carefully placed boundary markers, placed around each strip. The piste serves its purpose, and there the match will begin.
The crowd circled at a distance around the match. Where the players took their steps onto the fencing strip, each opposite the other. The tension was hard not to give away. Each held their foil.
Avery took position between them. Raising her hand.
“En Garde!”
Each student poised themselves into position.
“Ready?”
A pause.
“And Begin!”

As Lorelei pulled her fencing mask over her face, reality started to set in. Some mystical, incredibly confident version of herself had signed up to fence in front of almost the entirety of the summer camp. Jesus Christ, literally why did I agree to this?
She sized up her opponent, glad to see she was facing off against someone her own age, then turned her attention briefly to the crowd. Anxiety started to course through her body at the pressure, the noise of it all. There were far more people watching than she had anticipated, and suddenly the idea of everyone seeing her lose seemed very, very real. Nope, way too scary. She averted her eyes back down to the ground at her feet, and started to shake out her arms, passing the foil back and forth as she did. She tried to focus on the familiar weight of it in her hand instead of the hundreds of eyes on her.
Then came the moderator’s voice, “En Garde!”
Lorelei took a deep breath, attempting to calm her racing heartbeat. It didn’t help. She shakily assumed the lunging position and raised her blade. She had barely gotten set when the moderator’s voice echoed across the piste once more. "Begin."

Fortunate she was very meticulous about being punctual with being on time or else she would not have been able to get to the piste for her fencing match. This was not new to Angel so the concept of the sport was not foreign at all. When she was little she would recall the days learning about fencing, even participating in some of the matches as well. The vocabulary and terms were not new to her, so she wouldn't feel too lost which had given her the advantage.
Likewise, she had made her way towards the campground's piste due to her being inside the cafeteria beforehand around the vicinity, breakfast was anticipated and it was delightful and of course delicious but she could only have so much, no use in getting in a twist and a queasy sensation when she was about to take part in a physical activity that needed agility and lightness. Angel was already at the area that was placed in the campgrounds for fencing and she got herself kempt and tied her hair in a bun. Grabbed her necessary equipment and went further inside the piste for her match which will begin momentarily. As she faced her opponent she raised her foil like so.
"En garde!"

Fencing— a game of strategy, precision, agility, and dexterity. A sport that Avery adored. Not only did she find the sport to be amusing, but the history behind it was also something quite intriguing. Years of watching her parents fence provided her much knowledge of the sport, she'd even managed to pick up a few moves herself.
Excitement filled her as both players, who seemed quite promising, took their places and begun as her voice echoed, "Begin".
Angel initiated the attack with a beat, sharply tapping her foil against Lorelei's. A tactical move used to provoke a defense from the opponent and clearing the way to launch an attack. It seemed to have caught Lorelei off guard, who stepped back attempting a retreat, but Angel was too fast for her. She'd quickly used the opportunity to strike.
"Halt", exclaimed Avery, as Angel's foil made contact with her opponent. "Touch right", she said pointing towards Angel.
A well executed tactic is what the young Gryffindor would call it, baiting your opponent to react in a certain way. Lorelei, on the other hand, though having made a rough start, did seem to have potential. Avery was curious to see how things would unfold in the game.
As the fencers regained their position, she said, "En Garde", further adding in French this time, "Pret..." letting out a slight breath, "Allez!"

Fencing Match #2

Lorelei hadn’t expected her opponent to begin the match with such a strong opening move. Angel’s beat had caught her extremely off guard. She had attempted to retreat, but her shaky starting position had not set her up for success, and she felt her ankle roll over slightly as she fumbled the backwards motion. Her heart jumped as she tried to regain her balance, suddenly very aware of how quickly the match had begun.
Lorelei felt the tip of Angel’s blade graze her protective gear and moved quickly out of her lunging position as Avery announced ”Halt!”. She lowered her blade and turned to face the moderator. The words “Touch right!” followed shortly after, and Lorelei did her best not to appear too disappointed by her poor start. She swallowed, forcing herself to stay composed as she stepped back into position.
Without so much as a second to recover, Lorelei was set back in her en garde stance. She took another deep breath, another attempt to calm herself and bring back focus to the match. Her nerves were still there, but she couldn’t afford to let them take over again. She exhaled sharply as the word “Allez!” rang out, preparing to act offensively this round.

Avery eagerly awaited what was to come in the following round. She watched intently, her hands fidgeting with the bracelet on her wrist as she uttered the words, "Allez!" Lorelei moved for an attack, lifting her foil. Her feet paced quickly towards Angel. Avery incessantly drummed her fingers on her knee in excitement. To her surprise, Angel stood completely still. Could it be the nerves? Perhaps the girl's mind had blanked? Whatever the reason was, the odds certainly seemed to be in Lorelei's favour. It seemed the Ravenclaw had anticipated a reaction from her opponent, but nonetheless she quite efficiently managed to hit her opponent on the side, securing a point.
"Halt!", Avery called. "Touch left", she said pointing towards Lorelei. Avery hadn't expected the new turn of events. She felt a tad disappointed for Angel, for the girl had played quite well in the previous round. Perhaps the next round will be different, and perhaps far more exciting. Avery was ever-ready, she had a feeling that there was lots more in store in this game, and that there was a lot more for her to witness.
Anticipation brimming, she called out, her voice beaming, "En Garde!"; and as the players regained their position she uttered, "Pret..."— a pause, "Allez!"

Fencing Match #2
Angel felt like time abruptly stopped for just a moment. What happened there was something unexplainable even with her pragmatic psyche as she could not move a finger much less her entire body. Her motions were on hold like Newton's law had just been carried out for one to see her opponent. She halted her movements, perhaps it was too soon to start of with a strong move but no matter she'd have to to make a move on and try to keep her wits and tact with her at all times. The slytherin took the initiative to plan differently.
The moderator for the fencing match in the piste was Avery Abenathy who seemed invested in the match so far. Regardless of the results she knew far too well she would not have gotten anything in this round but she needed to be quicker, stronger, and more able if the raven haired lass were to be smarter about this ordeal. She had to give it to her opponent, her opponent had potential the girl did in her gaze anyway. Already she can tell she had the stamina to last throughout their own match. But that wasn't saying much as that was merely an observation. Angel raised her foil once more again.

Lorelei had done her best to push her earlier misstep out of her mind, focusing on the current round. Anything could still happen, I haven’t lost yet, she mentally reminded herself. Once Avery had instructed them to begin once more, Lorelei moved on the offense.
She wasn’t very well versed in fencing moves or strategy but did her best to remember what she had seen the more experienced students practicing during the training day at camp. She vaguely recalled some of the fencers using a meeting of the blades as an opportunity to catch an opponent off guard, slipping out of the contact to land a touch.
When Angel suddenly froze, Lorelei saw an opportunity to try out the move. It certainly wasn’t a flawless demonstration of fencing prowess, but she managed to more or less copy the technique, sliding her blade under Angel’s and landing a touch on the girl.
Avery confirmed the contact a moment later and a small smile spread across Lorelei’s face. A part of her was incredibly relieved that, no matter how the rest of the match went, she’d at least have a point to show for it.
She re-assumed her readied position at Avery’s indication, breaking to chuckle for a moment as she realized the moderator had switched entirely to French for her instructions. She composed herself back to an expression of focus, not quite intense focus, but focus nonetheless, and jumped back into the competition.
