Zephyr was sitting in the Study Room for almost an hour now, and he was beginning to think it's more than that. His History of Magic book lay open in front of him. He started off fine, the homework was about the Runes and Magic, and the subject itself was fascinating. It was interesting when he first started reading, but now that he's been reading for an hour, the words have begun to blur. He blinked a few times and leaned forward to the page to reread the same paragraph for what felt like the fifth time. He reached the end and realised once again that he didn't understand what he just just read. He sighed deeply and left his quill on the table as he finally rubbed his eyes. There were subjects he could spend hours on without noticing the time like plants or creatures and he would happily keep going until someone reminded him that meals exist. But there were those he could only manage for so long before his attention started wandering somewhere else. That day, it's going somewhere very specific--the letter from his dad which he received early that morning.

It didn't contain anything unusual, it was all about Aelwyd Vale, their pets and his family. Just usual normal things from home. What's different was what's written in the end. His dad asked him again if he received any letters from his family, the Aldertons. He rested his cheek against his palm while staring at the book without really seeing the words there. The same question was asked from him before and it came up again. From what his dad told him last summer, things between him and his family were not good. And he understood why, that his dad left that life behind. As far as he knew, the Aldertons were not exactly happy about his dad's choices. But that was between them and his dad wasn't it?

He picked his quill up again and looked at his unfinished homework. Is it really that bad if they write to me? He was their grandson. It's not something anyone could change just because his dad was not in speaking term with them anymore. He's never done anything bad to them. He barely knew them. Most of what he knew about that side of his family came from the few things his dad told him including the pocket watch he was given over the summer. He couldn’t help feeling curious. The past is the past. Whatever happened between his father and the Aldertons happened years ago. It shouldn't decide what should happen now, right?

His eyes stayed on the parchment, but his thoughts were far away from Runes and Magic. What if one of them did write, would his dad expect him to ignore them? Would he be angry if he did? More importantly, why did his dad seem to expect it in the first place? He didn't realize he was frowning deeply, not noicing the tip of his quill was still pointing at his parchment until the dark spot spread against it. Finally realizing what just happened, his removed his quill but it was too late. There was now a large black blot that soaked through the sentence he spent the last several minutes writing. “Great.” He mumbled in annoyance. Giving up, he sighed once again and leanead back in his chair as he looked at the ceiling. Forget about homework, he didn't think he'll be able to do anything productive now. He would just continue to think about his relatives he had never properly met.

Becoming a member of the second year from the first was more demanding than just moving up a number. In the first week they were back, homework had piled high. Maisie found herself that first Sunday with slightly more homework than she'd like to have. The common room was boisterous , so she decided to go to the study room on the second floor. She'd been there once or twice in her first year, and she thought it effective enough. After claiming a seat at a table with already a student or two, Maisie had quickly finished her remaining homework, and she stood up to stretch. Browsing the bookshelves, and happily finding a few resource books, she made her way back to her seat, but something—or someone, made her stop as she scanned the room

She hugged the weathered books to her chest, breathing in their deliciously sweet inky smell. She tilted her head slightly to the side. It was Zephyr Deakin. Her friend. She hadn't noticed him coming in, maybe he'd been there earlier than her, but he was staring, fixated on the book before him. Yet, his eyes weren't flickering, a sure sign he was somewhere far away from reality. She stood there for a few minutes, wondering what he was thinking about. She remembered one of their encounters last year, and her face burned red. It was still embarrassing to think that she had cried so openly.

The tip of his quill had been resting for a while on his parchment, she could see that, and she knew a black ink spot will bloom with the quill tip as its center. It had happened many times to her own homework, when she was suddenly thinking about something else, and not noticing where the quill rested. Maisie couldn't grapple what happened that made him so lost in thoughts. Maybe something happened to his family, or he got bad marks on an exam. Whatever the reason, the girl decided to find out for herself. And also see if she could help him.

The rugs on the floor carpeted her steps as she made her way towards the table where he sat, and pulling up the chair beside him, she sat down, setting her books down gently. She hoped she wouldn't startle him as she spoke, softly now. She wouldn't like half the occupants of the study room chasing her for disturbing them. "Sickle for your thoughts? You've been staring at that page for so long. What's wrong?"

Zephyr was still staring at the ceiling when he heard the sound of the chair scraping which pulled him back into the room. He lowered his head and it took him a second to register the familiar face sitting beside him. “Oh hey, Maisie. How long have you been here?” He didn’t even notice her, he was too deep in thought about his family. For all he knew, she’s been there the entire time. It was not a good sign considering he was supposed to be studying.

He followed her gaze to his parchment and saw the large black stain again. “Been distracted I didn’t notice it ruined my homework.” It was followed by a deep sigh as he stared at what remained of the sentence under the blot. “Nothing’s wrong.” He glanced at Maisie who he already considered a friend, so he knew he could tell her if something was bothering him. The problem was that he was not sure anything was wrong. He was just thinking. “I got a letter from home this morning. My dad asked me a question that got me thinking.”

The paragraph that was part of his homework was not any more appealing than it had been five minutes ago. Maisie’s arrival gave him an excuse not to read it. Speaking of letter, “Maisie…” There was hesitation as he wondered if the question was strange to ask out of nowhere. “Are you pureblood?” His brow furrowed deeply. “Is your whole family magical?” It may sound unrelated to what she asked him, but there was a reason behind it. He wanted to know what growing up in a magical family was like from someone his own age than relying on everything he heard from his dad.

Realising how abruptly he had changed the subject, he smiled at her sheepishly. “Sorry, that sounded really random. It’s related to what I was thinking about.”
