This volume is set in Georgia, and failing that, Charter. Should you be reading it in a sans serif, the compositor disclaims all responsibility, and the reader is entreated β€” begged, frankly β€” to correct it before turning the page.

lya is of average height and average build, with two-tone curly hair, dyed black on top while the bottom half remains its original blond (a whim abandoned halfway through as it proved
too much trouble). Pale and undernourished skin gives him a look of near-permanent exhaustion, underscored by dark undereye circles and freckles scattered across his nose and cheeks. His fine features show the clear advantage of excellent genetics, though his blue-hazel eyes stay permanently half-lidded and vacant, the overall effect being that of a young boy who appears to have been drained of all life force before anything had been put in to begin with.

t some point in his childhood, Ilya arrived at the conclusion that most things are not worth the effort they require, and has been acting on it ever since. He is not depressed in
any clinical sense, he's just VERY VERY LAZY and has never had enough reason to be otherwise.

He can often be found doing the bare minimum at the last possible moment, when it gets done at all; except when a little effort now guarantees absolute laziness later because his hatred of trouble is the only thing that can force him to be temporarily useful. The things his family considers motivating, such as legacy and reputation and the constant performance of excellence, have never produced in him the intended effect, which is probably related to the fact that none of it was ever directed at him to begin with.

He is likewise of the opinion that if you wait long enough, most situations resolve without your input, or simply stop being situations at all. So far this has held β€” and on the rare occasions it didn't, he grudgingly squashed the nuisance just to get it out of his sight.

L A N G U A G Eγ€€β€’γ€€Fluent in Russian and English, the former as his mother tongue and the latter through private tutoring on account of English being the wizarding lingua franca. He picked up enough Mandarin to pass the classes that require it, since a good portion of Koldov's coursework is taught in it and there was no avoiding that. Below even the Mandarin sits his French, a subject the family kept on the curriculum out of pure formality despite having drifted out of muggle noble society well before the Gallomania ever started, and below nothing sits his Old Church Slavonic, which he reads and writes fluently.
A C C E N Tγ€€β€’γ€€The household Russian is old boyar through and through in the roundabout and ceremonious way, Ilya had choosen to kept the grammar and dropped the patience, speaking it straight and short as directness often ends conversations sooner. His English holds up better in grammar than in rhythm; quite often the stress is put on the wrong syllable, and the whole thing seems to be running half a second longer than it ought to.
P O S T U R Eγ€€β€’γ€€A younger Ilya sat through the formal etiquette lessons every old pureblood family insists on. Koldovstoretz has worked most of it out of him by now, and present-day Ilya slumps in chairs whenever he can.

Fig. 5 β€” The Voronov Usadba Detinets, Veliky Novgorod
B A C K S T O R Y

or eight centuries the Voronovs have sat in Veliky Novgorod, and in all that time neither their estate nor their bloodline has been permitted a blemish. Ilya Konstantinovich
Voronov is part of how they manage it, the fourth of the current patriarch's five children, otherwise known as the spare of the spare of the spare.

In a household of this size, parental attention is a finite resource that has never once been distributed evenly in the history of human parenting. Our unfortunate boy Ilya had not only lost the birth-order lottery, but had done so while being unremarkably average: he had none of his eldest brother's authority, none of his second sister's charisma, none of his third brother's raw talent, and whatever remained of his parents' regard had also been thoroughly monopolized by his youngest brother who was coddled by every member of the household down to the house-elves.

For all practical purposes, Ilya was the superfluous one. Π›ΠΈΡˆΠ½ΠΈΠΉ Ρ‡Π΅Π»ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΊ.

Nobody could legally sue the Voronovs for child neglect, as Ilya had been very well taken care of materially β€” he had a massive bedroom, private tutors, and a butler who would procure him anything if Ilya harassed him enough times. But he had grown up entirely within this world and had no frame of reference outside of it, so the idea that he was privileged never quite registered. What registered instead was the question of whether he registered at all... and answer on most days, was "no".

If he threw a tantrum for attention, it was ignored; if he stayed quiet, it was a relief to a busy household. Any practical need or inconvenience was so efficiently absorbed by the servants that it never needed to travel up to his parents' ears. Even at the family dinner table when the children were expected to recount the day's accomplishments, his contributions never measured up to those of his siblings, thus earning him no praise. Ilya quickly realized that competing with his siblings for attention was pointless, so he gave up and withdrew into the background, ending in a state of learned helplessness, asking for nothing and offering nothing.

As for Koldovstoretz over Durmstrang... his older siblings all went to the latter so he'd rather not.

ine-year-old Ilya had been sitting alone in an unused room, feeling uncomfortably warm, when a rusted window that had been stuck for years simply slid open. He mentioned it to
his parents, who agreed it was probably magic and changed the subject fairly quickly. Ilya went back to the room, and the window stayed open.

Voronov (Π’ΠΎΡ€ΠΎΠ½ΠΎΠ²) n. prop. β€” from Π²ΠΎΡ€ΠΎΠ½, raven. See also: carrion, vantage, caches.
x
Novgorod was a merchant republic long before it was anything else, and the Voronovs were merchants long before they were aristocrats. Back in their zhityi lyudi days the family fortune was built on the northern ingredient trade, the harvesting and export of magical materials from the Russian wilds; dragon by-products from the Ironbelly reserves to the south; Graphorn horn and Erumpent hide brought west along routes the family has held since the Hanseatic days; and fluxweed cut at the full moon and Ashwinder eggs frozen in the minute they allow by hands paid to know the difference.
The last Voronov to handle a hide did so some five centuries ago, around when Moscow annexed Novgorod in 1478 and took the republic and open trade down with it. True to their name the ravens simply relocated to a higher branch, out of the market stalls, keeping the routes while dropping the merchandise. Better still the family had watched the republic's army get routed at Shelon in 1471 and concluded how this would end 7 years before Novgorod did; the blood had always been old, so the fortune only needed to buy its way into boyar standing, which at the time, turned out to be cheaper than hides. And thus when the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy arrived in 1692 there was nothing left to hide.
(the actual maneuver would take a paragraph on title arbitrage and i am choosing peace <333 just know that buying discount nobility off a dying republic does nothing by itself, you also need the 7 years of sucking up to Moscow)
γ€€γ€€Then came 1917, voiding every title in the country, but this time the ravens did not bet on the winning side. The winning side was the proletariat and there are prices even survival won't pay... so no higher branch this time, the whole flock just bolted. Though "bolted" might be overselling it because to muggle eyes the Voronovs had already been fading out of politics for two centuries by then. Peter buried the Boyar Duma in 1711 and the rank of boyar died with it, then his Table of Ranks in 1722 made nobility a thing of merit, so when the Voronovs got handed a count title off the new shelf they understood what it meant β€” that the state now considered their five centuries interchangeable with anyone's five years of service β€” and the long walk out of muggle politics started there. The revolution merely finished a disappearance long in progress. The grounds went under a Fidelius Charm and every muggle-facing asset was written off, what remained of the family lived on inside the wizarding world.
Nowadays the business of this still self-described boyar house is all paperwork, mostly composed of supply chain contracts, harvesting rights, storage manifests, and goblin deals too old to reopen. Losing the muggle fortune barely dented the ledgers, so the money still doesn't get made so much as it just shows up.
γ€€γ€€The current patriarch Konstantin Dmitrievich Voronov runs the business the way his father did and his father before him, which is to say he maintains it. Nothing about said business has needed changing in his lifetime thus he sees no reason to be the first Voronov to go looking; innovation is for families with something left to prove. One would assume a business that runs itself leaves the man with idle hours. But one would be wrong, because everything in it needs babysitting: (list tba bc i don't actually know what old money do all day). Everything outside the ledgers falls to his wife Yelizaveta, who (manages... things; wife things, noble things. my only reference for aristocratic wives is historical romance manhwa and i need to read a few more first). Between the two of them the household runs like clockwork, and so does the marriage, in the sense that nobody winds a clock out of love.
─────
γ€€γ€€Now the inventory of children. Vsevolod came first and was raised from the cradle to be a smaller Konstantin, views the household through a strict hierarchy and while acknowledging his other siblings as legal entities, Ilya was just air to him. Ksenia's the charmer but treats Ilya as a low-maintenance asset to be deployed when convenient and this is where i ran out of steam. does anyone actually read this ency? he's a stinky quidditch boy. why am i writing him a seven-person family tree. i'll finish this some other day, or never, whichever comes first

yes it's big and old and sits on a bluff over the Volkhov River behind a Fidelius, no i have not put in the effort to figure out layout specifics yet
the scale is roughly fig. 5 because after the full 1917 retreat they patched the old estate into a private kremlin by adding, y'know, walls. founding logic was more or less "oh the Kremlin out there has fallen to the proletariat so this is now the last and only unspoiled boyar citadel in all of Russia." the ultimate boyar cope lmfao
before 1917 the place was called The Voronov Usadba, these days it's presumably something terminal like The Voronov Detinets (detinets is what Novgorod called its citadel before Moscow's kremlin existed, so the name is technically necromancy
and since it IS a kremlin the footprint is an irregular polygon that follows the terrain, there are swallowtail merlons on the walls, the structure is brick faced in rough white stone bc red brick is fugly and i refuse, and the buildings inside get onion domes + 1 bridge-chamber spanning a ravine Γ  la Rentereya. oki imma stop right there bc one more sentence and this becomes an archi assignment & i did not escape studio to do studio here
