Amethyst held onto her mother's long and slender finger tightly, gaping at the manor's decor tonight.

It was as if, she did not wake up to run along the same halls every single day.

However, it was not everyday that the Castillo manor had lights flowing around while the orchestra blended in with the sophisticated conversations of the grown ups.

The moonlight that poured in through the tall lancet windows was in perfect harmony with the candlelight of floating crystal Chandeliers and the orchestra was playing a tune she had grown to love.

Amethyst had then decided that she loved having guests over, for it was when the ballroom remained open late into the night, and in the kitchen, laid all kinds of dishes ready to be served.

The seven year old, abruptly left Adelaide's finger, suddenly deciding it was time to run around. She gathered the hem of her dress clumsily, with her slightly stubby fingers before looking around for her grandmother. A sigh of relief escaped her mouth as she found her nowhere around.

"Mamma! I will look around!", she said adorably making the passerbys aww at her cuteness.

Adelaide, only laughed softly fixing her hair gently and advised, "Alright, do not run around in your dress or you might fall down and do not make trouble."

The seven year old tried rolling her eyes at the 'do not make trouble' part but found it difficult to do. She however, walked only till the ebony doors of the ballroom, before launching into a sprint across the main hall straight to the garden.

One could ask why and even go as far as to be weirded out by the young heiress, but she had now decided that she would have to start from the garden and the entrance of the manor to properly admire the night's festival.

Reaching the garden, she held onto a pillar nearby, as she breathed out heavily. Running was not her forte. She tried smoothing down her hair, like her mother would but decided that was not her forte either.

And so, with slightly messy hair and her long dress still lifted up by the hem, she made her way through the garden.

She was soon surprised by another presence, a kid around her age reading a book.

Is he taking a lesson? When one could feast and dance and enjoy?

Amethyst lifted an eyebrow before approaching him. She cleared her throat as she approached the boy. She could see that the young boy was deep into his book, but she couldn't help by be curious as her initial quest now lay forgotten.

Damien hated pureblood events, he hated how his father enjoyed dressing him up as if he was some sort of doll to be put on display for all the world to see. Damien currently stood in front of the mirror as he looked at the clothes he was wearing. He was wearing a red suit with a golden floral pattern along with a gold tie and a pin on that looked like it belonged to Gryffindors. His family came from a long history of Gryffindors his father being one of them however Damien hadn’t even gotten his acceptance letter yet but his father seemed determined he would and he would end up in Gryffindor. But when Damien looked at himself in the mirror the red and gold suit, his hair being out into curls that made his natural ones look like it was all fake and smother in gel. It all made him feel like he was alone else and wasn’t being true to who he was.

He took a deep breath and sighed as he heard foot steps walking up the cool wooden stairs of the Dragonclaw manor and towards his room. Suddenly there was a knock at the door and his mother slowly opened the door in to look at him. “Damien my darling, we will be leaving in a few moments so make sure you bring everything you need!” She spoke in a soft gentle tone as she smiled at Damien before leaving the room and slowly closing the door. She knew Damien was still in a sensitive mood as he just had his first instance of magic an hour ago and so tension especially between his father who was upset about the window were running high.

Damien hadn’t meant to break the window in all honestly, he just didn’t want to go to this stupid event and be reminded by old men how he was a handsome young man and his father should be proud. Just the thought of it disgusted him as he truthfully hated it with a passion. He sighed as he looked around his room and noticed his beige bag and decided if he was going to be stuck in this hell he might as well take some things with him. He got up and put his sketch book as well as some
pencils in there before grabbing his Greek mythology book and gently placing it in there as he closed the bag and put it over his shoulder.

He made his way down stairs where he would find his mother draped in a beautiful red dress with beautiful custom made jewelry she had tailor to her. Meanwhile his father had on a red suit with gold around some parts of it. It was almost like they were matching and Damien felt disgusted just looking at it. He slowly made his way towards them as his mother gave him a smile and a reassuring hand squeeze as they all walked to their fire place and grabbed the Floo powder. Damien father voice spoke with emphasis on his pronunciation. “Castillo manor!” He said before throwing the floo powder in the fireplace as in an instance they went from being in there manor to being right in the Castillo manor’s ballroom. Damien never understood why their family couldn’t own a car as it wasn’t like they would use it much he just genuinely thought it would make arriving to events so much easier.

As Damien looked around he noticed how beautiful the place was, the lights, the orchestra even how the moonlight would pour into the windows onto the candle lights the place looked absolutely stunning. Damien suddenly saw his mother walk towards a woman who he only assumed would be the head of the house or the woman in charge of this event. “Adelaide darling it’s so good to see you!” His mother said as she walked towards her and would give her a hug before giving her air kisses oh both of her cheeks something Damien has never saw before. “Oh! Evanora, Grant so glad you all could make it! It’s been so long!” Adelaide Spoke as she began to rope them into a conversation.

Damien took this as an opportunity to slowly slip away before he was noticed as he did not feel like talking to people today. He began to explore for a bit letting his curiosity run wild before he spotted a butterfly near a door leading to an outside garden. Damien who child like wonder couldn’t be deterred would begin to laugh and chase after the butterfly as he found it fascinating and wanted to see it up close.

After awhile he had tired himself out so he was now currently sitting on a fountain smelling the flowers and reading his Greek mythology book on The Iliad. Damien had to admit he absolutely adored Achilles as he found him to be absolutely fascinating especially how he was practically invincible besides for obviously his heel. Damien always wondered though, if he was invincible ever where but his heel why didn’t his mother drop him back in the water to make that part invincible too or just wear armor on his heel like a extra protection around the heel to keep him protected. None the less Damien found Achilles inspiring someone one he hoped to be one day, sure Damien couldn’t be physically invincible but he could be someone who fight for others and protect the ones he love like Achilles did.

Suddenly he heard someone cough and he slowly looked up trying to steady himself as he got startled and almost fell into the fountain. He noticed it was a girl who was looking at him with a curious look on her face like she was trying to figure him out. Damien felt a little nervous under her gaze as he didn’t like it made him feel. “Oh! Uh..hello I hope I didn’t disturb you or anything..” He had a light blush on his face as he felt embarrassed.

Amethyst blinked in confusion.
Why exactly was he embarrassed?

"Of course, you are not disturbing me", the young girl said matter-of-factly. "All you are doing is reading a book, in a secluded corner, nothing that anyone can be disturbed with!"

To Amethyst that seemed perfectly reasonable.
"What are you reading though?", She asked intending to extend the conversation, scared he would go back to reading his book and leave her alone.

In all honesty, Amethyst never had any interest in books.
Ironically, her favourite Hogwarts house was Ravenclaw. She practically day-dreamed of having the sorting hat over her head, and it screaming 'RAVENCLAW'.

To Amethyst, books had always meant endless hours of lessons that her tyrannical grandmother made her go through. For her, reading was tied to discipline, memorization and perfection for as long as she could remember. She did not really hate studying, but the lessons would take away half of her day when she could see the river gleaming in the sunlight through her window.

Amethyst admired the fact, that someone could be so absorbed in a book without thinking of it as a burden.
Of course she could never admit this out aloud. Doing so might make her seem unintelligent which she rightfully was not. Amethyst had proudly mastered every lesson forced upon her, and scored well in every test her grandmother devised for her.

Still if Jenalyn Castillo had failed to teach her anything, it was how to make friends.
Amethyst genuinely had no idea how to continue talking to the boy infront of her without accidentally seeming to be rude.

Carefully smoothing down her dress, she sat down beside him watching the fountain, and silently hoping that he possessed the skills to carry on a conversation.

If she felt nervous about making a friend, none of it showed on her face.

"Well", Amethyst said after a moment, "I am Amethyst and you are?"

For a brief second, she thought of explicitly asking for his family name as well, but realised how terribly impolite it would sound.

Damien let out a breath of relief as the girl said he wasn’t disturbing her, that was good Damien honestly didn’t want to bother anyone and deal with his father and his lectures for another hour. “That’s..good” He kept it short and simple as he genuinely did not want to talk to her or really anyone for that matter as he enjoyed keeping to himself and his books than speaking with people. When the girl asked him what he was reading Damien was too lost in his thoughts to give an answer right away. He don’t understand why this girl wanted to talk to him so badly but he also did not want to be rude to her. He just found it hard to like the company of people especially other purebloods at the events they were so boring and never any fun but he guessed he could cut her some slack and attempt to converse with her. “Oh..it’s uhm the Iliad it’s a Greek mythology story on the Trojan war and Achilles”

He doubt the girl would know what any of that meant but he could always be wrong as people managed to surprise him every day. He hoped that answer was enough to satisfy her as he generally did not really feel in the mood to hold a conversation for long. When she stopped saying anything else Damien took that as she had caught he wasn’t interested in speaking right now and went back to reading his book. He always felt better when he was reading his book as he felt at peace and calmer than he would be at these events that he couldn’t stand to be at anyway. Just when he thought he was safe the girl started talking again, this time introducing herself as Amethyst. Damien had to admit the name was unique as naming someone after a gemstone was kinda cool..as maybe it reflected her beauty or something he honestly didn’t understand it but he wouldn’t point it out. “Damien..my name is Damien Dragonclaw.” Once he said that he went back to being quiet and reading his stories.

Deep in his heart he felt bad for seeming so distant and almost rude you could say to the girl, it wasn’t anything to do with her it was just. He felt like his social battery was drain as soon as his father presence is near him and then add these events on top of things and he just was all too much for him. He gently wished sometimes he could go hide and be away from everyone but even the faiths couldn’t be that kind to him so he had to settle for some human interactions. He looked at the girl before sighing and closing his book again. “You’re name..it’s uhm…it’s pretty, I quite enjoy it a lot.” He smiles at of at her as he felt like he truly could possibly have a friend who didn’t just want to be his friend due to who his father to better there family.

Amethyst was taught to notice things and to be particular about them by none other than Jenalyn Castillo.
Noticing expressions and nuances, however, was something she learnt by herself and an ability of hers she put trust in.

The boy in front of her was clearly not interested, but she kept insisting.
She had to keep insisting.
Amethyst had soon realised that going back to the ballroom for the sake of admiring all the beauty properly would mean interacting with adults that would not be her parents or, worse, would be her grandmother.

She felt a twinge of guilt. She was being selfish and was invading his space. But that was her being her, probably.
She still hoped the boy would perhaps enjoy being friends with her.
The young heiress was used to being adored by everyone around her; even her grandmother would end up giving in to her requests.

And perhaps was thus imagining that conversations with her age group would be easy.

She smiled at him as he made an attempt to converse. And luckily, Amethyst knew her Greek and Latin well. "I love that story as well!" Amethyst exclaimed and added, "Mother told me that one."

Amethyst glanced at the statue of Goddess Hectate from behind the fountain, lost in her thoughts. "I would describe the whole ordeal as messy, the Trojan War, I mean. The gods made it messier," she said, her voice drifting off.

She was pulled out of the trance as he introduced himself as Damien. She turned, passing a toothy grin.
Her smile was brighter when her name was complimented. "My grandmother was dead set on naming me Amethyst, as my father likes to quote! I am not sure why, but it must have its story. She even has an amethyst ring to match my name!"

"Why were you named Damien?" Amethyst asked in a while. While his surname sounded impressive and was well known to her, she resisted the urge to ask further, afraid she would appear rude and intrusive.

Amethyst sincerely hoped this was enough to break the ice.

Damien was soon starting to regret this, he really didn’t fancy having a conversation with anyone at the moment yet this girl seemed very persistent in getting to know him. Don’t get him wrong he enjoyed meeting people as much as the next person however he did not have the energy to meet anyone right now, especially when he just wanted to be alone and read and he thought this girl would have taken the hint by now. But alas she is proven to be quite stubborn. He just listened to her begin to talk about the Trojan war as well as her own opinions on it. He wasn’t really interested in her opinions as they were just common thoughts, the gods did make everything messier however it was more so the Odyssey where the gods were messing with Odysseus and his men more so.

Then she moved onto her name which Damien guessed sounded far more interesting than knowledge on a subject he already knew. “Maybe that’s why she thought your name should be Amethyst ? As she thought you would grow up into someone beautiful like the gem.” Damien was only assuming what could be a logical reason for naming your child Amethyst. He honestly didn’t see the appeal of naming someone after a gem stone but whatever made people happy as who was he to judge.

She posed an interesting question to him as he honestly had no idea why his parents had named him Damien, he never once really asked them why as he just assumed it was a name they liked so who was he to ever question it as it wasn’t anything special. “I don’t know..I mean it’s noting unique like Amethyst so maybe they just liked the name Damien..I feel my middle name is more interesting than Damien.” Damien quite enjoyed his middle name as he was named after the main character in one of his favorite books. Odysseus from the Odyssey.

Amethyst thought about Damien's suggestion. It sounded unlikely to her. Her grandmother was someone who thought everything through, a bit too much for her likeliness perhaps.

"Well, maybe? But as much as I dislike to admit this, my grandmother likes to think things through. She sees more than just beauty in things, unnecessary things if you ask me. " Amethyst said, her nose crunching as she mentioned her grandmother.
"Maybe the gem is symbolic, and so is my name? I do not really know the use of the stone of amethyst. Maybe I should read about it or directly ask my grandmother," the young heiress sighed before continuing. "But her answers are not always the kindest, so I try to avoid her."

Dimples formed on her cheeks as she noticed how genuinely Damien was thinking about her question. Even if slightly, he had found this conversation interesting, and that fulfilled her purpose.
"My middle name is literally my grandmother's name, Jenalyn. Most uninteresting part of my name perhaps," she remarked before asking, "So, what's your middle name and the story behind it?"

Maybe it was because Damien had started taking interest, but Amethyst had started feeling guilty for being so selfish.

She decided it was the best time to tell the boy in front of her the reason for being here and thus, waited for him to finish answering her previous question.

Amethyst was not really sure of how one should apologise.
She started, surprisingly or not so surprisingly, with a stutter: "W-well, I honestly came here to escape the adults inside. They can be quite—"
She tried finding a word in her dictionary: "Suffocating? Yes, suffocating."

Then suddenly she realised that that was not her primary reason, so she continued, "No, I actually came to admire the decoration, perhaps from an outsider's view, but then I realised that my grandmother would have been free from guiding people around. I did not want her to catch up to me, so I was trying to find an excuse to stay before Eris comes here to fetch me. They all are boring at best. I like parties, don't get me wrong, but that is because I love admiring the decor and, uh, food."

She ranted, almost apologetically. She did not care whether Damien cared about whatever she said or not, but she had to get it through.
"Actually, the main thing here is I did think you were trying to escape as well. And I, um, disturbed your escapade. I am rather sorry about that, so I had to rant about all this."

She wondered who he was trying to escape from but thought it was better if he told her himself rather than asking explicitly.

As Damien listened to this Girl speak he started to pick up on a few things, she seemed to not have the best relationship with her grandma. Which Damien could understand as he also didn’t have the best relationship with his grandmother but that was due to the fact he hated what her beliefs were. Damien knew very well how his grandmother and his father view half-bloods or muggleborns, he had heard the lecture many times on how they were “less creatures” to those who stayed pureblood. Damien never once believed that to be true as even his mother thought that was ridiculous but she knew they would never be able to change her husband mind so that’s why growing up she taught Damien how everyone was equal no matter how they looked or their blood status.

Though listen to what Amythest was saying Damien didn’t get that same sense he did when he was around his father and grandmother, so maybe she disliked her for other reasons, Damien may have been curious but a Dragonclaw was told to never pry or ask questions as it could be rude. Damien didn’t want to come off rude so he kept it to himself. “Hm..I suppose that must be so hard for you to deal with.” He kept it short and simple as he truly didn’t like holding conversations with people for long, especially when he did not want to speak to them.

His eyes widen as the conversation shifted to her middle name, wow either her grandma seemed to be really self absorbed or maybe the parents wanted to honor her somehow Damien really didn’t get it but adults were also strange so. “Oh. My middle name is Odysseus like the character from the Odyssey.” Damien honestly never asked why that was his middle name, he doubt his father was the one to pick it so he figured he would ask his mother one day if he could remember.

He stayed quiet as she began to ramble again, he was realizing she tend to get into her head a lot of times and start to ramble, it was a tad bit annoying but he didn’t say anything about it yet. Avoiding people specifically her grandmother was the main reason that brought her here. Damien couldn’t say he blamed her he also was hiding from his father and other adults but that was also due to the fact he just was mentally exhausted with people an d couldn’t stand to be around them right now. So he did sympathize with her but why did she have to come interrupt his evening, he was content with reading his book and hiding in the garden for the whole evening yet she kind of ruin that. Damien hopped his facial expression didn’t betray him as he knew his expressions had a habit of betraying him when he tried not to show how he felt so he assumed if she looked closely she could see how he looked annoyed.

She finally finished apologizing and expressed how she figured he was trying to escape from people as well. Damien just sighed as he took a moment to think to himself. He supposed she hadn’t been bad company as he was in fact trying to escape from the presence of someone so she wasn’t wrong in that assumption but he still didn’t like the fact she was immediately assuming that. “Hm..now why do you assume I was trying to escape from someone ? Couldn’t I just be coming out here to read and enjoy my evening ?” He asked with a little hint of annoyance, he didn’t really like when people assumed things about him even if it was true or not.

His whole mood had honestly sour since he had engaged in this conversation, he honestly just wanted to be left alone was that just too much to ask ? Couldn’t a boy just get some peace and quiet to himself. Damien was starting to think ledge as an impossible challenge he would never achieve tonight. First he had to come to this ridiculous party to pretend to smile and conversation with people he didn’t like and was dressed up in color he didn’t truly enjoy being though he supposed he’d have to get used to them whenever he got sorted into Gryffindor but still he felt ultimately uncomfortable especially when he was under his fathers watchful eye. But then on top of all of that this girl who family was the one hosting this event didn’t want to be near her grandmother so instead of hiding from her in the comfort of somewhere quiet and alone she decided to make it Damien problem to deal with.

Just splendid tonight couldn’t get any worse could it ? He just thought to himself as he tried to calm himself down before he had an outburst, he needed to control himself. To be in control, a good pureblood knew how to control their emotions especially when they were out in public. He took a deep breath before his eyes looked at the girl again as he spoke. “Listen, don’t take this the wrong way as it has noting to do with you I just had planned to spend my evening alone…so sorry if I’m not the most talkative right now but I am truly sorry you have to deal with all the stress you’re grandmother put you through” He stopped for a moment as he was trying to chose his next words wisely before he continued again. “However that doesn’t excuse the fact you decked to make it my problem, you can’t just make you’re issues someone else issues because you decide to ignore when someone clearly wants to be alone. You have to try and handle your own battles yourself as I personally can not and will not interfere as it is none of my business and right now I am upset you ruined my evening of reading my good book.” Did that come out kind of harsh, yes but would he apologize for what he said, likely no as he meant what he said but he could apologize for how his tone sounded as it truly was rude.

“Sorry..not for what u said but for my tone sounded harsher than I meant it I’m just…irritated is all.”

Amethyst could barely believe what she was hearing.
The accusation was entirely baseless.
Moreover, it was ridiculous.
The boy before her was being absolutely and utterly rude!
She had approached him politely, had she not?
Her intentions were pure and of friendship.
Such ugly words in such a pretty garden.
The flowers she had watered with love the same morning deserved better.
But she was not the sort of person who sat back and endured insults.
If he intended to be unpleasant, then Amethyst saw no reason to hold back.
Two could play that game.

Amethyst narrowed her eyes, perhaps in disbelief. "I am not assuming anything about you, Damien. While reading a book in solace sounds like an interesting evening pastime, nobody does that at a ball." She stopped to breathe. "It is painfully obvious that you are avoiding something or someone," she said calmly. She felt annoyed, but not even an ounce of emotion was visible on her face.

Amethyst would not let him have another word. She would not let him hurl another insult at her.
Damien had spoken enough.

And before he could speak up further, she beat him to it: "Also, I should perhaps thank you for such lovely advice, but I am doing very well in handling my own battles. I do not know why you assumed me sharing my problem means it is now your business."
She retorted, "Another thing, you need to make it clear when you want to be alone. I am no Legilimens to know what you are thinking of."

It would be a lie if she said all that did not hurt her at all.
At that moment, she remembered why she hated living in Lancashire despite her love for the River Lune.
Secluded.
She felt secluded every time she would go to another gala; the kids there would already have their own little groups, laughing and chatting around, and she would be left all alone amongst adults who adored her but she did not recognise.
All she wanted was a friendship.
She had tried her best to not be rude.
She had tried her best to be as interesting as possible.
But perhaps today was not the night.
And before the tears pooling in her eyes could stream down her face, she got up.

She glanced at him as she smoothed her dress and her hair. "Just so you know, you are very harsh. You being irritated has absolutely nothing to do with me. And if anyone here assumes things about people, it is you, Damien, not me," she said, rolling her teary eyes. "The last thing I would like to say is maybe read about reality instead of the Iliad; you might end up hurting fewer people in the future. It was not that hard to understand that I wanted us to be friends," she said, smiled and turned around to go inside for dinner again.

She might have to meet her grandmother, but at least she could have dinner.
She made a beeline for the kitchen.
Perhaps the sweet dishes could eat up all her sorrow, leaving her with nothing but happiness and satisfaction.
Sweets never abandoned you.
People did that all the time.
She could eat something sweet and sleep. Her dreams will be sweet tonight.
It could not be that hard to be alone.
And with that thought, Amethyst wiped the lone tear that slipped out of her eye.
She checked her reflection in the small mirror placed beside the huge ebony doors of the mansion as a decoration.

The young heiress could not let anyone know that she was close to crying, ever.
So she put on a smile and opened the door and straightaway went to the dinner table that had her favourite treats laid out.
She looked around, and finding no one else, she stuffed her mouth with two of them.
The smile was instant and natural as she savoured every bit of the treat.
Amethyst believed food was a blessing, a means to compensate for this cruel world.
To be more specific, it was just sweets.
She hated the mere sight of green, leafy, uncooked vegetables that her grandmother called 'salad', which she was forced to eat two times a day.
She was lucky her parents and grandfather went on business trips to bring back a lot of sweets for her.

She sat down at the table, savouring another treat, and the boy named Damien lay forgotten, at least for the time being.

Damien just stayed there as he watched this girl walk away, finally now he wasn’t plagued by this girl and her annoyance. Such an outburst as well was so embarrassing and so over dramatic. But suddenly he felt this small sense of guilt in his heart, he felt bad…not for what he said but the way he said it. There could have been such a better way for him to express his anger rather than the way he expressed it to her. He let out a soft sigh as he closed his book, not even the Iliad could stop his guilty heart from taking hold of him. He slowly got up off of the fountain and decided he would make his way inside. Not for long but long enough to spot Amythest and apologize to her.

He truly didn’t mean to hurt her feelings but he was just fed up with the day overall, between his father pressuring him and then this stupid party Damien was honestly just so over today and wanted it to be over so he could go to bed and enjoy himself a night of peaceful sleep. As he walked inside his frown deepened as he noticed just how many people happened to be in here currently. It was way too many for Damien liking and sure he was good at dealing with these types of things before but he honestly didn’t have the emotional energy for it.

He ducked through the crowd trying to dodge any chance of his father seeing him by ducking behind people who was taller than him. Damien just didn’t want to get stuck into conversations with anyone as then he’d likely get roped into a conversation with his father. So he gave out a few pleased to meet you’s as well as simple greetings before finally finding Amethyst at the dinner table eating food.

Damien brain began calculate, how could he possibly speak to her to apologize without it looking strange or making a scene. He saw his mother currently walking to the table likely going to get a seat for his father as well as Damien himself with a plate in her hand.
Damien mind suddenly was filled with a brilliant idea. He subtly snuck himself into line to get himself a plate as he started to collect the food he planned to eat for right now before looking at the sweet selection and picked up two cookies. He made his way quickly towards his mother before pointing out the three chairs that were empty near Amethyst, granted Damien wouldn’t mind if anyone took his fathers seat right now but he sat next to Amethyst quietly.

He thought about what he could say to apologies to her but he decided to go for something simple. He took one of the cookies he got before wrapping it up in a napkin and taking the quill and ink he had brought in case he wanted to write notes into his book, before he slowly wrote, “I’m sorry, I would like to be friends” in this beautiful cursive hand writing that matched the beauty shimmer of the purple ink he used before he added a smiley face and onto it before sliding it over to her and hopping she would accept it as a token of gratitude as well as a sign of Damien realizing just how stupid he was being.

Once he slide it to her he could feel his father approaching their table, he straightened his back more to show proper manner as well as to avoid a scolding from his father.
