The fencing competition created a charged atmosphere. The students who had been a part of the fencing course would finally have the chance to prove their skills today in the open air of the fields behind Durmstrang. For now, the quidditch field was vacant and instead replaced with mats on which the fencing would take place. There were enough mats that the students would fence all at once and the winning team would be decided by three judges, who would determine not only what team won, but also who was the better teacher between the headmaster and his special friend. Whoever won would of course be the one paying for the food and party that occurred afterwards, but either way, Emery had already purchased medals for the winning team.
As this special friend of his was indeed already a fencing instructor, the equipment had been blessedly provided to the students through him, and no cost had occurred to create this competion. However, Emery wondered if he could convince the other to let the school keep the equipment afterwards. Perhaps, he could convince the other with a kiss and what ensues after.![]()
There was a strange child that wanted to join as well, but was too young to join the festivities. So, Emery allowed the child to observe and strange cartwheels and staring ensued. Emery does not know who this child is and does not want to know.RULES & AVAILABLE ACTIONS

EPEE Description
Epee is the type of fencing that is most similar to actual sword fighting as both fencers may win a point. There are no right-of-way rules and legal targets include the entire body, including the head. Out of character, the rules have been played with in order to ease moderation, however, in character, please write as if it is real Epee. The course that I mentioned in character started in March, so it has been 8 weeks of fencing lessons, specifically in Epee. If you are Maroon, you were taught by Emery and if you are Indigo, you were taught by the mysterious suitor.

To say Boram was looking forward to the competition since the first lecture on fencing would have been an understatement.
I wonder if I will go against Arnie... Her iridescent eyes would look around the group of students who she assumed to also be in waiting for the competition and match pairings. The wind blew across the open field, calm like the waters of the open sea. She'd hum softly as she swept her hair off her face, practically smelling the salty air, her heart beat rhythmically to the waves along tall stone.
Adrenaline seeped through her flesh, smooth with a touch of red.
The art of fencing was not unfamiliar to the girl of burning hair, contrary to the softness of a kiss beneath the fallen night; battles always seemed to carry a sense of spark to her. Even when silks and suedes draped over her, chaos followed like sunflowers did the sun.
Or she sought it. Craving destruction that only seemed to be whispered in the Bermuda Triangle.
Quite the forbidden desire for a girl who lacked common sense, yet lived plagued with the sting of her rage that ignited to the sparks of metals clashing and echoed words.
I will win... Even if it meant having to go against Arno, it was just a competition after all... not a matter of life or death... right? As if confirming her own statement, she would nod before doing her hair into a neat bun, careful to keep her hair out of her way.
For she hated having things in her way.

Sports were a complicating topic for Vasilius; they were categorized into only two categories, one being the 'I like it' category and the other being 'I loathe it.' He just found most sports too wild for him, a blatant excuse for his disdain for anything that tired him out, but if there were anyone sport that involved his precious sweat from falling other than broom racing? It was fencing. A game that wasn't just of sheer strength and reckless moves, but rather one of calculation and precision, something that Vas favoured.
When he'd heard of the fencing match to be held, he found himself instantly signing up for it. It was the sole reminder of the true him, whom he had buried in the depths of his soul, guarded by the tremendous walls that had risen inside him.
He made his way to where the match was to be held, with Magnus, a rather unforeseen companion for the game who'd joined it the moment Vasilius had mentioned the game. A rather strange action by the usually cutely fiery-tempered idiot who'd go to great heights to instead make fun of Vas and his hobbies.
But then again, Magnus was acting like a whole new person after the ball, not in a bad way, just different. Constantly interrupting Vasilius's routines that involved drowning himself in his stacks of books and social isolation. It had been annoying at first, but as time seemed to glide, his once-annoying presence began to blend into his routine, almost comforting.
"I find that one need not enjoy the blade to understand it," Vas muttered as he obsessively smoothed down his hair, which seemed to be acting up on the cold winds of the ice-covered land. "I see it rather as a study of restraint, timing, and intellect. An art that highlights the beauty in the integration of human concentration and strength alike", he added, as he finally glanced at Magnus, a peaceful expression on his face, a gentle smile forming on his face.

xx | ββββββββββββββββββββββxRussian - #3f3022 ; English - #470000 π΄his was idiotic. Perched on a high wall a few feet beside the field, a leg folded to her chest while the other swung in the air, arm resting on her knee β Viktoriya was toying with a dagger, spinning the sharp blade between her fingers, throwing it in their air before catching it mindlessly. Fencing was a sport she not only enjoyed, but had devoted years of her life to, although her family's version was- bloodier than what crowds have grown accustomated to. Her mind circled back with delight to the sharp sting of steel biting her flesh, the rush of adrenaline coursing her veins upon ducking the blows of her assaillant, before lunging. Despite her penchant for combat, this tournament had been immediately crossed out in the 'there is not a single universe in which I will attend this' category, and she had went on with her day. That was until somehow Mstislav had had word of it, and had kindly let her know her presence was not an option. It was now no longer a senseless school event, but an occasion to represent herself, and by extension, her House. There was no point in debating the stern man her father was, and thus here she stood, the weight of duty carefully balanced on both β shivering β shoulders. A fever had wrapped itself around her limbs, hand tremorring imperceptibly and beads of sweat pearling down her face β through sickness she prevailed, though her worries were aimed at the terrifying eventuality she would not even be able to lift her blade. Fainting was not an option, and neither was losing. (ONLY IN DEATH DOES DUTY END.) A frown creased her brows as two unfortunately familiar figures trailed down the field, appearing disgustingly close. A moron and a freak. Delightful. Vasilius had had little impact over her psyche, he was not a threat to neither her nor her family, and appeared reasonable enough not to get on her last nerve, something his companion ought to learn. From a positively witless first encounter that ended up with his back thrown against a wall, Magnus had somehow decided getting his ass beaten was something worthy of admiration, and had since trailed every single one of her steps. Some dogs should be drowned at birth. He still painfully reminded her of someone she wished to forget, and the mere sight of him sufficed for her blood to boil. A flash of red caught her eye, distracting her from her disdainful survey of her opponents. The only other soul standing in the middle of what would soon turn into a warzone was someone Viktoriya had never met, hair the exact hue of roaring flames and an equal fierceness in her posture. Hmm. Women were objectively more appealing to the eye than men, and she in particular stood out in contrast of the goblins marching beside her. Sheathing her blade, she hopped down the towering wall she had been sat on for the past half hour β her vision suddenly turned to black, body feverish, before she blinked it back to normal β and made her way to the center of the field, halting before the list. Great. Not only she had been paired with one of the lovebirds, but she had to fight the second. There was no way she would live down being beaten by that greasy blonde. Losing was definitely not an option. VIOLENCE FOR VIOLENCE. ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ

| XXXXXX | Almost a year had passed without Melor infuriating Ivan, one way or another. A year of peace where Ivan had very little to show in his developments in excelling everywhere he had fallen short β in comparison to his barbaric baboon of a brother. He had joined the fencing competition on a whim, far unlike himself, noting the severe lack of musical development over the course of a few months as he made little to no effort to truly participate in any classes which included physical activity. Sparring itself had been far out of the question for him, yet, for an odd reason, fencing had piqued his intrigue, much like his rise to the duelling team. Broodingly strolling onto the field, Ivan's eyes instinctively narrowed as he gawked at the prospects aheadΒ β few students already gathering. For the first time, he had discarded his dependence on books, though having done some prior reading to brush up on the rules, he was extremely adamant that this would showcase some form of improvement which he could gloat in his idiotic twin brother's face over for that was what had mattered more to Ivan. Marching with a newfound arrogance which was almost uncanny, it had taken him no time at all to reach the notice board β curtosey of his growth spurt over winter break, his eyes squinting from the blazing spring sun as he searched for his name and who he'd be up against. The name was undoubtedly unfamiliar, but the Baskakova cared little for the unfortunate soul who he had been paired up against, all he had to do was somehow win even if the odds were against him. Ivan's thick brows furrowed as he turned and marched once more to the mats, his gaze wavering towards each participant, few he had seen in classes, few he cared minimally to remember. An unreadable expression rested across his features, his mind racing with different strategies he had vigorously studied. In spite of it all, he could not yet mutter a word, his voice to raw as it began to develop rather early, words croaking in a higher pitch more frequently, forcing the eldest Baskakova to turn to selective mutism. |

Fencing and Tea
Tossed into the fire of the fencing championship, the absence of Liliyaβs opponent not only provided her ample time to prepare, but also ample time to overthink.
Stepping up to her position on the piste, icy blue eyes surveyed the assembled attendees with uncharacteristic coldness and the ferocity of a warrior in preparation. Amongst the five already gathered, three were strangers, and it was those particular three that caught her straying attention. Magnus and Vasilius she had acknowledged and dismissed, just another two of Noelβs little friends, a group of rowdy boys she was both intimidated of and amused by. From the dark-haired youth to his bright ginger counterpart, silence weaved itself across their stances as anticipation crept into their bodies, yet her flitting gaze stayed on none of them. Instead, it hovered just over one particular figure. Nameless, to her, yet as that hint of determination glinted under the high-hanging sun of the Laplands, it stirred something in Liliya β as if she finally found the audience she was performing for.
She squinted at the girl she did not know, and if she were to look in her direction, if their eyes were to catch each other, she would offer her a bare wink and nothing more, just enough elusiveness to spark interest. It was her own, quiet form of respect, for somebody who might range anywhere from infuriation to companion. Gathering her hair into a bun, she straightened herself, and twirled her sabre between her fingers, feeling her heart skip a beat. She could not quite tell if it was because of excitement, anxiety, or something else entirely.
When her opponent would inevitably arrive, she would offer a brisk introduction for the sake of politeness, before smirking. βLiliyaβ¦ donβt worry, Iβll go easy on you.β
That was a bluff, but that was also a lie. To be a lover, one must first be a fighter.

βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββArno awoke with an entirely different headspace, he didn't believe in coincidence, not on days like this.
Emery had stripped the quidditch field and reduced it for a more local construction. A linear structure of a fencing arena had now been imposed upon a space that previously enjoyed theatrics of flight and noise, one Arno was quite fond of. He hoped it'd back to it's natural state sooner rather than later.
Stepping down onto the grounds, his pace remained measured as he glanced over the already present gathering of students. There was no need to rush. Time, for all it's restraints, made for an equally efficient test of someone's mettle. It did not reward impatience, and yet, eternity was torture as well.
And Arno, for all his faults was nothing if not aware. All actions, all entities, all ideas, they all required moderation. His hood remained drawn, shadowing his expression and that too out of all dramatic inclinations. There were several bodies between him and the piste. Obstacles if you had to give them a narrative. Irrelevancies if you were to deem them unimportant.
His gaze passed over them one by one, Boram, while her presence didn't alter his pace, her presence was noticed and if she stood in his path. She would be addressed accordingly. Until then, she remained a variable he had yet to discern.
Another boy came into his vision, a familiar face? perhaps no, but he'd seen him in passing, accompanied by another, enough to suggest relation but nothing that required Arno dwelling on it.
The next figure was nothing more than an unfamiliar face, an unremarkable one at that as well.
and then the mutt from Koldov. Arno had seen enough of his kind before. Brash, loud, reactive and utterly stupid individuals who depended on brute force rather than any form of refinement. Disposable in all sense.
Arno moved past the rest of crowd with no pause, and was at last, greeted with something worth his attention. Liliya Starkova. Arno reached up with his fingers, pulling back the hood of his cloak down in a single motion.
She spoke first. "Liliya... don't worry, I'll go easy on you." Arno held her gaze for a fraction. "Arno." A slight nod. "I'd rather you didn't." His voice was even, absent of challenge and entirely dismissive of sentiment. At his side, rested his blade and at his, remained a dagger sheathed.

Fencing and Tea
Wide eyes fill with a combination of nerves and excitement as the young child heads to the dedicated venue. Recently, Valeriya is starting to break out of their shell a bit, trying lots of new things, including visiting the foreign school of Hogwarts without their brother. They still donβt have the extensive confidence and competitive nature that most Durmstrang students seem to possess, but theyβre working on it, and thatβs got to be good enough for the time being.
Similarly unlike many Durmstrang students, fighting isnβt Valeraβs thing. It never has been. Violence is something they are firmly against. But fencing? Fencing isnβt violence, is it? Nobodyβs going to get hurt β thereβs protective gear. It could be a way for Lera to ease themself into the militaristic culture of Durmstrang without the risk of causing any actual harm. So, here they are, participating in this little competition, even if it wouldnβt be the first activity theyβd think of filling their time with.
Besides, isnβt it kind of like dancing? A thrust here, a parry there, footworkβ¦ theyβre learnable steps, and maybe if Valeriy can find the rhythm of it all and lean into that flow, itβll come as naturally to them as dancing in the forest at home. That doesnβt sound so hard, does it? The comparison soothes them and reinforces that this will be a positive experience β itβs just like a new style of dance.
The equipment feels rather unfamiliar, though, and they donβt particularly like the mask. Itβs a barrier between them and their surroundings, which, while good for protection, isnβt something that Valeriya would want in ordinary life. Their hair turns silver, complementing their weapon, as if their body is fighting to try to maintain the deeper connection with their environment. Theyβre accustomed to experiencing the world around them with all their senses in tune, and to have that be somewhat impaired by the dark mask thatβs already slightly weighing their head down makes them a little uncomfortable. The Γ©pΓ©e is a bit heavier than they expected, too.
Nevertheless, the mix of determination and rising adrenaline spurs them on, and theyβre bright-eyed by the time they get into position, ready to accept the challenge and give this their best shot. A little smile graces their lips without them even realising it. Whether their opponent can see it or not is of no concern to them. Itβs not for him, nor is it an indication of cockiness; itβs simply a manifestation of their satisfaction with the moment and their hope for what is to come.

Their lessons demanded only time, instinct, and skill from him. Before long, they stood at the culmination of all three. Heβd been looking forward to their final demonstrations since the beginning, but the sheer preparation beforehand flattered him. This was no small thing, but something specifically meant to prove themselves as a credit to their families and instructors.
As the last to approach, still testing the weight and mobility of their Γ©pΓ©e and padded gear, he swept a curious look over the gathered crowd and judges before focusing finally on his opponent. It was between him and another first-year student of similar build, though, as a consequence of forgoing investigation of fellow peers in favour of their upperclassmen, not one he recognised by name or nature. Regardless, Alexios had always considered himself a good sport. βMay the best of us win!β He offered to his opponent, pleasant as anything, before getting into position.

It was a noble art, though never something Alexiosβs worldly upbringing focused upon. In welcome truth, he would have passed it by completely if not for his characteristic opportunism and all the surprises it often delivered. Compared to Durmstrang's general populace, Alexios was, at heart, an actor and not an athlete, and his greatest experience in sword work had been regulated to the stage. There, weapons were blunted and tempers filtered behind weeks of practice and the illusion of violenceβthere, physicality existed only to advance the greater story already written out. No matter how 'dirty' a character fought, there still existed an honorableness that bleached blame from the actors' consciousness, and no duel existed without ringing heroics. The flashy efficiency of it all appealed to him more than most, and heβd often spent more time admiring the beautiful catch of light against steel than risking his health. Consider him rightfully cherished, but heβd always been so perfectly content with the prettily painted wooden swords heβd been gifted that the mere idea of forcing his fatherβs hand in improving upon them seemed ungrateful. Durmstrang indulged him far less and exposed him to far more, but the same shadow of orchestration still regulated his every move. If he could better himself with no great loss on his or his familyβs part, of course, Alexios would take the initiative and join his peers in practice. |
