| N | Restlessness had drawn Noel from his bed far earlier than usual that day. For the blond boy, there were too many revelations, set down within a letter, that now stirred through his thoughts. Even as he hastily pulled on thicker socks, the words Russia and Christmas lingered between heart and mind. Italy had not been mentioned. Not even the word south had found its place amidst the flood of words from his dear Mother. Noel had drawn the warmth of the hearth-fire deep into his lungs and wrestled himself from his sleepwear. Not long thereafter, the boy found himself standing before the bedroom door of his friend Magnus. To appear at such an hour was an occurrence of near-mythic rarity — akin to sighting a unicorn with two horns. The Italian-born boy was no creature of the morning and made no effort to conceal it. Early lessons were met with scarcely half the attention they required. Breakfast was, in his estimation, entirely dispensable, and any form of physical exertion before sunrise ought to be forbidden. The cold, too, he counted among his more intimate adversaries. Knowing Magnus’ routine, the scene took on an almost absurd quality. Framed by preferences so wholly uncharacteristic of Noel, he had chosen to accompany Magnus nonetheless. The true reason behind it did not matter. He was grateful for the ease with which Magnus could be approached. No explanations pressed from him and no justifications were demanded. The reason for the early morning surprise was free to linger somewhere about the castle, left to drift in its weight, until it might break upon the frozen lake and perish. And so, not long thereafter, Noel found himself seated where Magnus had chosen to do his workout. The cold air brushed against the youthful trace of Noel’s high cheekbones. His hair lay more in the disarray of sleep than in any deliberate arrangement, and the rest of him had retreated into the shelter of a heavy blanket. While elegance kept lingering in his joints, the retreat was not intimidating or cool. His legs were half drawn in. They rested within thick boots and socks beneath the cream-coloured wool. Whilst the blond tips of his hair fell in soft waves across his face. To appear composed held no consequence. Not when half the student body still lay comfortably beneath their duvets. From the corner of his eye and below the long dark blond eyelashes, Noel saw a mass of newly fallen snow collapse to the ground. The northern fir must have yielded beneath its weight. Though it had fallen at a sufficient distance, the thought that it might just as well have struck his own head let him sink deeper into the blanket. «I tried to warn you, it would be cold out here!», Magnus suddenly remarked. Noel pierced his friend with bluish eyes. In their weariness, they scarcely held the strength to mount a true defence. «You might have made more of an effort.», he shot back, as biting as he could manage — although he likely appeared more sulking than sharp-tongued. Noel pressed his chin deeper into the warmth of the fabric. Another strand of hair fell across his face. «Perhaps next time you should simply knock me unconscious, or lock me in the lavatory. You could have been more creative, could you not?» Noel turned his gaze from Magnus’ eyes and let it calmly drift across his shoulders. Bare-chested, his friend had already left a trail of push-ups behind him in the snow. Meanwhile, Noel had attempted to warm his hands upon his tea, only to abandon the effort. The pot and cups now stood beside him like silent spectators, staring at Magnus in mute disbelief. With a soft remark, Noel sighed: «I cannot fathom how you do not freeze in such weather. Do you not feel the cold at all? I don't want you to catch a cold.» The very thought of the air against bare skin drew the blanket closer. He cannot imagine ever undressing in the snow. Even a coat must stay worn. |
