Even though I'm just a first year, I'm interested in how OWL‘s and NEWT's work.
Are they optional like homework? How do they work?

They are like homework, but you get both homework for that year and OWLs and NEWTs. They can be done after you have graduated to the next year I believe

adding~ if you want to take certain jobs when your character graduates, you might need to acquire certain OWLs or NEWTs check more in the adult system!

If you wish to see the Adult Jobs that are available, you can check out this thread.

To earn OWLs or NEWTs in addition to the homework system, you can acquire 3 OWLs and NEWTs by taking a position as a Librarian's Aide for a year.

Adding onto what everyone else has said since I've done a few!

- They're optional, but certain jobs may require you to have done some.

- They are generally a bit more involved than the usual HW. Be prepared to set aside a bit of time to do them.

- Often, you can find answers in past lessons.

- They open up once you graduate to the year in which you're eligible for them. So, OWL opens up at y5, and NEWT opens up at y7.

• BUT you don't have to do them immediately. I've only done 3 OWLs and 2 NEWTs. I may or may not be procrastinating the last combo I need...
• If you change jobs or something, you can just do more OWLs/NEWTs

- Like Aiko said, you can also take an IC job as a librarian aide to get free OWLs/NEWTs. Up to you!

• My strategy was just taking the Second-String Quidditch Player job since I met prerequisites, and then working on the OWLs/NEWTs I didn't have over time. So far, so good!
