_______The spider crawled upwards a few centimeters. It stopped, turned around, fidgeted a little, then turned still.

The two mothers had been conversing for almost an hour, again. Clément could hear their voices, even from across the corridor – if the hotel was rated five star and was filled with frilly furniture, its doors weren't designed to be particularly sound proof, especially when ajar. Lying on his bed fully clothed and staring at the little spider spinning its web on a corner of the ceiling, the French boy was too lazy to get up and shut the door. 'Flemme' was the word in French for laziness, and to be honest Clément quite liked its sonority. Muttering it under his breath, he found that he could prolong the 'f' and the 'm' sound and obtain a rather comical result.

"... we'll join you to visit the museum tomorrow, I'm very passionate about Italian wizarding history myself and Clément really should get outside and breathe some fresh air. He's been doing nothing all day and besides, it'll be an opportunity for him to make friends with the children."

Clément frowned. Why did friends absolutely want their children to be friends as well? Clément wasn't a particularly unsociable person – quite the contrary – but he had not been totally thrilled to hear that he'll be expected to make friends with four girls and a boy a few years younger than himself. To add on to his misery, three of the girls were triplets – the first set of triplets he had ever seen in his whole entire existence. He had had trouble telling them apart at first, but then after that stupid dinner party the mothers insisted to have, in which he had spent almost the entire evening marking the small differences between the triplets, he finally could differentiate them.

After a while of doing strictly nothing apart from lying motionless in his hotel room, he realised he was quite hungry and decided to go downstairs and see if there were some of those Italian snacks he enjoyed. The hotel lounge always served some small biscuits, and Clément had nothing else to do anyway.

It was only when he had gone all the way down the stairs, gone up to the counter to fetch a small basket of snacks, and settled down on a comfortable sofa when he realised that someone was at the grand piano in the corner. With a jolt, he recognised the person bent over the keys as Violeta, one of those triplets that had taken him so much effort to recognise. Intrigued, he pushed himself up from the sofa and, still munching a biscuit, approached the girl.

"I didn't know you played the piano," he blurted out, his French accent thick.

XXXXX𝓘taly was a beautiful country in the Summer. At least from what Violeta had gathered.

Summer wasn’t particularly her favorite season and she didn’t really enjoy being in the heat, however she couldn’t lie, the country was a pretty sight in that time of year.

The Roux family had decided to spend the Summer there and so far, Violeta had been enjoying the trip. Except for the fact that all her sisters seemed to talk about were ‘cute Italian boys’, her older sister couldn’t stop talking about her new boyfriend who was at his home, in Ireland, apparently and her younger brother was eerily quiet lately. Perhaps it was because he had made so many new friends at the school that he thought his sisters were now too boring for him.

Anyways, apparently when her mother was about her age, she had had a pen pal from France and the two had met up during said trip. It had been almost an hour since the two had been chatting. To be quite honest, Violeta had gotten bored out of her mind after twenty minutes of their chatter so she went off to the grand piano.

She had been playing since she was young and it was something enjoyable. Eventually she’d become much too lost in the melody and start ignoring the outside world and time would fly by. That was probably why she hadn’t noticed a figure approaching her, or the time passing by much too quickly.

After a couple of seconds, she reluctantly stopped playing and looked up. She realized it was her mother’s friend’s son. Their mother’s had wanted the five Roux children to befriend him, or something, however the Violeta hadn’t taken a particular liking to him, and her sisters hadn’t seem to either. Daniel was also younger and during that trip, wasn’t talking to anyone much. Not that he did in his everyday life, anyway.

The tall brunette tugged on her necklace and blinked twice. She realized that he had asked her a question and she turned her head. “Oh.” she muttered, still sitting down, except now turning towards the boy. “Yes, I do, why?” he seemed a bit, shocked? That she played the instrument, or any instrument at all. Her thick American accent slipped a she had spoken. She still wasn’t too sure if she should reply in French or English, as he was French, but she assumed that, as he had spoken to her in English, just now, she replied in the same language.

_______"I was just... curious," Clément mumbled slowly, his attention clearly elsewhere.

Cinnamon eyes travelled from the girl's puzzled expression all the way to her bare shoulders and down her arms, finally finding long, slender fingers half rested on the piano keys, fingertips still suspended – as though they'd go back to playing any second. Violeta's back was straight, seated on the first third of the piano stool, one foot pressed against a pedal – the posture of an experienced pianist. If ten-year-old Clément would never have paid as much attention to how someone sat and could much less tell said person's talent at an instrument from their posture, the twelve-year-old version of the boy, emerging from grief and loss with a newly acquired sensitivity, would never have missed a single detail. The quick survey was therefore enough for Clément to conclude that Violeta indeed played the piano and was even quite advanced.

His brain was lent no time to translate into English the flurry of words pouring out of his mouth. "My goodness! You could've told me you played an instrument!" he exclaimed in rapid French, feeling excitement rising up inside him, "This is amazing!" A large grin spread over his features, and for the first time ever during this vacation, a twinkling gleam shone through those eyes.

"What were you playing again? Really sorry for the interruption, couldn't contain my curiousity – or rather, my curiousity did not want to be contained," he laughed, a happy, bubbly feeling he had not felt for so long jumping up and down in his chest.

Much too impatient to wait for an answer, Clément rememorated the melody he had heard right before his own intrusion. It was no small surprise to him when almost automatically, his brain added to it, surpassing a great deal the passage he had heard Violeta play... Why was it so familiar? And then, all of a sudden – "But this is a duet! Good gracious, I've played this before!"

Whatever response his interlocutor, Violeta, might provide him with, Clément would offer a quick, hurried nod, a large smile and a wink, before zooming out of the room, his voice echoing loudly in the corridors, "Be back in a jiffy! Just gonna go fetch something..."

He ran up the stairs two at a time, hurried through the corridors and into his room, and before long was back with a big black case. He opened it easily, and retrieved an instrument made in deep reddish wood and polished till it shined – his most prized possession, his cello.

"Alright! Should we start?" he asked, already seated on a chair with a bow in one hand and the instrument ready.

XXXXX𝓥ioleta had grown a bit over the last couple of months. She stood at 5’5, being taller than average girls her age. Her posture had always been amazing, thanks to her mother, who was always telling her to keep her back straight, and never arched. Sometimes, she disobeyed, but never when she was playing the piano. Never.

Her posture was one of a skilled pianist, which was what she was after all. The brunette had been playing since she was about four or five years old. Her parents required it as some sort of ‘life skill’. Her older sister played as well, though she was not as passionate as Violeta.

Her dreamy eyes met his. Only for a mere second, until she drifted her gaze away. The tall girl blinked looking back at the piano. She listened to his words, in French, his native language and nodded, slowly, before replying quietly and in bit of an uninterested way, in the same language. “We have just met…”

He seemed much too excited to be finding out about this. It was just a bit of knowledge she had, nothing too special. Or was it? Anyway, she was, secretly a bit… intrigued, to say the very least. As he asked her what she was playing, she opened her mouth to reply, but didn’t. Or rather, couldn’t. Clément spoke before she could. She was about to say it was a Chopin duet, but the golden brown haired brown ran off first. She lifted her eyebrow and before she could even blink, he was back with a… Was that a cello?

“You play? I wouldn’t have guessed.” she said, genuinely a bit surprised. When he asked if they should start she was even more in shock. She certainly wasn’t expecting this at all. However, much to her surprise, she was a bit excited, and she even grinned. Only for a mere second, though. When she returned to her default face, she looked back into his eyes and then back at the grand piano. “Yes, yes, we should.” said the brunette, placing her fingers onto the piano’s keys, and beginning the duet, once again.

Oh yes, Clément did play cello. Now it was his turn to be surprised – had he or his mother not bothered to mention Clément's number one pastime, his single aspiration, the very centre his life revolves around? At the realisation that no, he indeed had not bothered to, a tinge of regret gnawed at his heart. Had he revealed his cello skills, perhaps he and Violeta would have had the chance to play together sooner, which, in turn, would have saved a lot of his time from being wasted staring at spiderwebs on the ceiling.

But, as people say, the past was in the past, and Clément had learnt to not linger in regrets.

A knowing wink was all he answered to Violeta's remark; and when she agreed to play, Clément couldn't have been more ready.

He let the first few measures of piano notes flutter by. Violeta's skills met his expectations – she was talented, meticulous and as good a partner as he'll ever get. He watched with a sparkling eye as her pale fingers danced on the black and white stripes, leaping in graceful arches from key to key; listened, his mind at peace, as the melody twirled out from the great instrument, a steady and delicate pa-dum-dum pa-dum-dum pa-dum-dum. Then he joined in, his bow gliding across the cello string and his left hand fingers pressed down firmly against the sleek fingerboard. The first note vibrated to life, echoing between the walls and filling the space around them. Clément's heart skipped; this was exactly it, exactly the feeling he searched for every time he played music.

He let the intertwining melodies engulf him in a sea of emotions. Up, down, left and right his heart went with the music, but always and forever forward.

When, after what seemed like an eternity, the piece reached its end and Clément emerged from his trance-like state, he was smiling broader than ever.

"Yes, yes!" he sighed when the last echo had faded. His voice was raw, brimming with emotion and excitement. "Thank you– " he looked right into Violeta's ocean blue eyes " –thank you for that. It was amazing, truly phenomenal." For the first time, he saw, really, truly saw Violeta. Not in that game-like way that evening at dinner when he was trying to differentiate the triplets, nor with the analysing, overly excited eye that had scanned over Violeta when he found her sitting at the piano. This time, it was real; heartfelt. He saw her bright blue eyes, the curves of her hair as they intertwined in braids and her smooth, clear skin. Most of all, he saw her talent with music and that impressed him.

He stared absentmindedly at the ceiling.

"You know that feeling– " he continued in French, not bothering with his crooked English anymore, " –when your heart feels like it's tightly clenched, not in an unpleasant way but in that breathless, euphoric feeling whenever you've truly connected with music?"

He looked back at Violeta.

"Well, I feel like that right now."

XXXXX𝓐s the notes of the grand piano fluttered through the air, and soon enough the cello chimed in, Violeta became one with the music.

It was no surprise that she was an extremely talented pianist, she had those fingers, that posture that only the greats seemed to posses. However when she realized how truly amazing Clément truly was, she couldn't help but be surprised. Pleasantly so.

The pair played beautifully together, as if the duet had been composed simply for the two of them. The melody flowed beautifully, and it seemed to linger in the air. This was as close to a perfect duet as it could possibly get... At least in the brunette's humble opinion, yet she would never admit that out loud, obviously.

After what seemed like an eternity, a good kind of eternity was over, she couldn't help but look up and smile at him. He stared right into her blue eyes and she stared right back at his cooper ones. "Of course." she said, replying to his words of gratitude. It truly seemed as if music was this boys passion, and Violeta could see that extremely clearly now as she stared deeply into his eyes. She felt as if he saw him as a person, someone who she might potentially care about, which was a rare instance, especially since they had met only this Summer. In a... passionate way, even. As if she were a dumb schoolgirl fascinated with a boy, and ironically a boy whom she had just met.

The girl quickly analyzed him as he stared obliviously into the ceiling. She wondered what he was thinking about at that moment. Her? The duet? His cello? She would never truly know as mind reading simply wasn't a thing. When she was younger she wished it was, and now, years later, she knew that would never be possible. Boys were shallow, most of them at least, so she assumed it was something immature or whatever, but still, she kept on staring... That was so weird... she couldn't seem to look away from his pretty face.

As he spoke, she slowly nodded and realized she had been feeling the same way for the past couple of moments and she smirked for a second thinking about that, how they were in sync, just like they had been only a few minutes ago during that beautiful duet. She pondered if she should say something, be vulnerable and admit that she was in fact feeling the same way. A sigh escaped from her rosy lips as she thought, and finally she decided t0 speak. "I... feel the same way, to be quite honest." speaking in French and smirking once more. This boy was truly full of surprises and in a way, she was pleased, even though she certainly did not like surprises. Obviously any stranger would be full of them, however she became more and more pleased once she found out more things about him... The brunette realizing she had been... smiling? Even she was surprised, though she couldn't control the look on her face.
