Apothecary
XXXEonaria walked down the streets of Diagon Alley, fidgeting absentmindedly with the money pouch in her robe pocket. There were a lot more people around than usual, most likely due to the back to school shopping everyone had to do. Indeed, that was also the reason she was here. She had actually finished most of it a few days ago with her family as planned, but once she arrived back home, discovered she had neglected to stop by the apothecary. Her parents had sent her back today to fetch her missing supplies. Eonaria was very annoyed about it, as the place smelled of extremely foreign, conflicting scents, and this time she wouldn't be able to convince her brother to get them for her. She inhaled a deep breath before tugging open the door to the shop. If she could minimise the amount of stench assaulting her senses, that would be lovely.

XXXThe apothecary was about as magical as you could think of without assorted objects sparking and floating all over the places as you could get. Shelves were stacked with many odd ingredients, from bottles of oils to suspicious bug parts to rather mundane items. Eonaria sighed, tugging the list of ingredients from her pocket. Now, where to start...

XXXAs she looked through the shelves, trying to figure out where everything was, Eonaria couldn't help but overhear a girl with brown hair asking an assistant for help gathering ingredients. She openly stared for a moment before turning back to a jar of dead caterpillars. Were those on the list? Hopefully not. You can ask assistants for help?? I didn't know that! If I did, I wouldn't bother getting this close to all these... everythings. She grumbled internally, but decided against asking an assistant. No doubt she'd stumble over her words and embarrass herself.

XXXAs you can tell, she wasn't in a very good mood. Apothecaries did that.

XXXOddly, the girl turned and spoke to her very apprehensively, introducing herself. Eonaria looked back up, surprised. You don't have to force yourself to talk to me, you know. "Er... nice to meet you, Emily. My name is Eonaria." There was a beat of silence before she added with a small sigh, "getting other people to get your ingredients for you, huh? That's very smart." She frowned down at her list even though she had probably looked down at it at least five times in the last two minutes. "So... are you a first year?" The girl looked younger than her, but age was a fickle thing, and Eonaria didn't want to assume.

I didn't expect it to get so long, sorry about that.

XXX“Don’t worry, I definitely am a second year.” Eonaria looked at her list yet again for no real reason. She just wanted something to focus her attention on without staring at Emily, because that was weird. Normally, she would have been more self-conscious of her actions or tried to pretend to be busy fetching ingredients, but the pure inconvenience of standing in this apothecary had made her very irritated. Eonaria inhaled a deep breath to calm herself only to regret it as another lungful of pungency came in. She coughed slightly, glancing up at Emily, only to be bewildered at the sudden appearance of a handkerchief. Where did that come from? But she resisted voicing her confusion.

XXX“It certainly is not.” Eonaria grimaced. “You’d think there’d be a spell for this… but maybe magical scents can’t be covered up.” She sighed, wrinkling her nose as she looked around for a jar of bat spleens, which were thankfully encased safely in the container and sitting neatly in rows. Eonaria picked up a few, stacking them neatly before adding them to her load. I wonder if Emily is actually trying to engage in a conversation or just small talk.

XXXShe felt a little bad, so she finally shoved her list back into her pocket to avoid getting distracted by it. "So... found everything you need yet?" Eonaria asked, referring to the entire supply list rather than just the potion ingredients.

XXXFor a moment, she wondered whether it was strange to ask what type of wand Emily had received. You can tell a lot about someone based on the wand that chose them, but it wasn't completely accurate. Eonaria liked studying little facts about wand lore in her free time, and she was pretty sure something had gone wrong with her wand. That, or our wands are suited to our future selves, which... is concerning. I don't think I'll ever become someone who values power over cleverness. But it most likely was a strange question, so she refrained from doing so. Instead, Eonaria went with another one.

XXX"Have you looked at your books yet?" she questioned, trying to lighten her voice to sound less grumpy. "It's quite useful to touch up on the theory before entering class." Eonaria picked up a few extra jars of honey as well. She would probably end up eating it as a midnight snack, so better safe than sorry. "Imagine showing up to Potions class only to remember you ate your potion ingredients," she sighed out loud. She'd probably end up doing it even with the extras. More backups means more to snack on.

XXXEonaria nodded in response. "Oh... I'm fairly sure you don't have to learn all of them by heart even before school starts... I just meant the general gist of it." All of it by heart seemed very overkill.

XXXOf course, that hadn't stopped Eonaria from reading every book from cover to cover (except the boring ones) last year, but it did make rereading it in class very boring. Sometimes, it was better to learn things at school than at home. "And you definitely don't have to read the entire thing just yet," she added with a chuckle. "These books are supposed to last the whole year." They definitely didn't for me. They need to assign more books. Again, Eonaria wondered why she hadn't gotten into Ravenclaw. Well, smart people could get into other houses too. Obviously. Being smart isn't a personality trait. It's the love of knowledge that Ravenclaw favors. But hey, I love learning things! I can't say I'm super smart, either. My brain barely bothers to remember what I ate a few hours ago.

XXX"That is very true," Eonaria mused. The only problem was, she had no idea where the regular food stores were in Diagon Alley. And it would make it pretty obvious to her parents that she was buying honey to eat, not make potions with. "I do think potion honey is higher quality, though. Imperfections in ingredients could make a whole potion go wrong. They've got higher standards for the things on these shelves than, say, the same thing that you might feed to an animal or magical creature."

XXXEonaria was quite startled when Emily suddenly laughed out loud for no particular reason, though it was soon cleared up after as the first year rushed to explain herself. "Hmm, not that I;'m aware of. It might have happened in the past, though. But I do hope I never run out of honey, the Potions Professor is quite scary." She shivered to herself. "Admitting that I've eaten my ingredients would be... mortifying!" Eonaria shook her head. No way. Absolutely not. "I guess it's good motivation to make sure I don't eat it all," she commented wryly.

XXXThe last of the ingredients on her list were carefully piled into a stack that Eonaria set on the counter while she waited for the store assistant to give her the price. Some dried herbs and other plants were hanging in bundles over the countertop, and while most of them didn't smell as bad as certain other items on the shelves, they were quite close to her face. She wrinkled her nose, ducking slightly. Some jars of flobberworm mucus sat neatly on a little stand nearby. Eonaria remember working with it last year, and Merlin, the texture was awful. Even the memory caused her to shudder.

XXXAn affronted expression crossed Eonaria's face when she heard the price. WHAT. There was no way that was correct. She was 97% sure that these ingredients were overpriced.

XXXI could have just taken what I needed from my mother's storage... wait. No. Bad idea. Very bad idea. She would most likely a) knock something important over, b) mess up the organisation system, and c) get in a whole lot of trouble. "Did inflation spike or something?" Eonaria grumbled, but she wasn't about to negotiate over a bunch of ingredients. She didn't really know the 'proper' price, anyway. It's too early to think that deeply into finance. She paid reluctantly, coins clinking lightly, before gathering her supplies and turning back to Emily.

XXX"I'm in Gryffindor," she said rather proudly, offering a smile. "I do! I love being in Gryffindor. But Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are nice houses too. All of them, really. I think I almost got into Ravenclaw, although of course you don't know what the Sorting Hat is thinking unless it tells you." Eonaria liked the Gryffindor community a lot, and the common room was quite cosy, even if the fireplace gave her a headache sometimes.

XXX"Ravenclaw has some great people," she added as an afterthought, almost wistfully. Eonaria honestly could not wait until she got back to Hogwarts. Literally all of her friends were there! She began tucking the ingredients safely into her bag to make sure they wouldn't fall over or spill while she was leaving.

XXX"Well, I hope you find the rest of your stuff okay, don't get scammed, alright?" Like I possibly just did. Or was it? Maybe I just underestimate the value of potion ingredients. I should ask my mother about it. Eonaria hoisted the straps of her bag over her shoulder, waiting to make sure she didn't accidentally cut Emily off in the middle of a sentence.
