Saturday mornings at Hogwarts were quieter than Nevan had expected when he first got there. Most of the castle still lingered in a state of drowsiness, students either sleeping in or relaxing. The corridors were less crowded, the air touched with the faint smell of parchment, candle wax, and the draft of stone walls cooling from the night.
Nevan walked with careful and deliberate steps, his robes neat and perfect, the green tie a comfortable weight he wore proudly. It had been nearly three weeks since the Sorting, and though Slytherin had its reputation, he had found it surprisingly easy to settle in. Adaptability had always been one of his strengths. He was good at blending in, learning the rhythm, moving without drawing unnecessary notice. But it was probably also that he naturally fit into Slytherin, as many shared his ambitions. He had already memorized most of the shortcuts between the dorms and the more important parts of the castle, including the library.
The library doors opened with a soft creak, and at once the smell of parchment and ink washed over him, soothing like it had always been for him. The ceiling stretched high, shelves looming everywhere he looked, every aisle brimming with texts full of knowledge. Nevan’s gaze swept over the space, sharp and steady. Students scattered in small groups, some working on essays, others whispering too loudly until the librarian’s sharp look silenced them.
But Nevan was not here for idle reading or studying, even if he did often come for that reason. His eyes flicked across rows of tables, searching for a particular figure. Damien Dragonclaw. Astronomy had been his proclaimed expertise, and Nevan, though careful and hesitant about asking for help, had decided to test the offer given to him weeks ago in Madam Malkin's. He had a few questions circling in his mind from their last lessons, things that weren't necessary for them to learn or know, but he just needed to. He preferred to work through problems on his own, but he wasn’t foolish enough to ignore an opportunity to learn from someone with genuine passion for the subject.
He moved deeper into the library, his footsteps nearly silent against the floor, eyes scanning past the stacks of books and candlelit tables. He slowed at the far side, a faint curl of satisfaction tugging at his mouth. There, he had found him.

Damien was just sitting in the library reading a book but not like the usual ones he read this time he was trying something different and was reading a book on watercolors and how to add a life more naturally to paintings. He figured it would help give him another view on how to do his paintings and make them more unique and extravagant. He was seated in his small little corner of the library hidden away from the prying eyes of other students in the library as he didn’t like a lot of people watching him as he felt it made him akward as he hated a lot of eyes on him. As he flipped his book to the next page he tried to think of when his next painting would be as he did finish the one he made for Elena but he felt like it was missing some sort of spark so he felt like he needed to add something to give it that like wow factor something to make her really show her how much he was sorry for the way he lashed out at her. He thought that maybe the book would be useful for him but so far noting he was reading was truly sticking out to him. He frowned softly to himself as he couldn’t figure out what the heck he was missing when suddenly he heard footsteps approaching his area. He looked up and was shocked to find his friend he met in Madam Malkins Nevan Easton. “Oh Nevan! Hello I didn’t expect to run into you today.” |

Nevan adjusted the strap of his satchel as he approached the tucked-away corner, quiet as always in his movements. He slowed when he caught sight of Damien, seated with a book in hand, clearly absorbed in whatever he was reading. At the sound of his name, Nevan inclined his head slightly in greeting.
“Good morning, Damien,” he said evenly, his tone carrying the same careful politeness he always made sure to inject in it. “I hope I’m not intruding. It seems I’ve discovered your corner of the library.” His eyes flicked briefly to the book Damien held, but he didn’t linger. He’d learned quickly that most students had things they preferred not to explain immediately, and he knew it was impolite to ask about absolutely everything he was curious about.
As he settled across from Damien, Nevan adjusted his tie, fingers brushing the Slytherin green as if to make sure it was neat. A flicker of pride touched his expression before smoothing into his usual composure. “I’m beginning to feel at home here,” he admitted after a moment. “My dorm suits me well enough, and I’ve already managed to find a few shortcuts to the library.” His lips curved faintly, the closest he came to a smile. “Which makes sense, considering I seem to keep ending up in here.”
He paused, studying Damien with a calm gaze. “It’s good to see you again. I remembered you said I could ask if I had any questions, and I wondered if you’d mind if I took you up on that offer.” There was no hesitation in his words, though his voice carried its usual quiet reserve, more matter-of-fact than uncertain. “It’s about Astronomy. A small thing, not something we're required to study, but something I'm curious about anyway. I'd look it up myself, but I haven't had much luck yet.” He probably could find the answer easily, but he was reluctant to mention that. He really just wanted to talk to Damien again, one of the first people his age Nevan has ever had a normal conversation with. And he was also testing him, to see if he'd keep his word.
His hand rested lightly against his satchel, as though ready to draw out notes or parchment if Damien agreed, but also ready to pick it up and leave should he decline.

Damien fixed his posture so he would be sitting up straight as he made room in his little corner for Nevan to sit down. “Good morning Nevan and no no your not intruding so don’t worry about it.” He smiled softly as he put his bookmark into the chapter he was on before closing the book. He was happy to see Nevan again as he turned out to be a really good friend or he hoped they were friends Damien wasn’t really sure to be honest but he did enjoy his company quite a lot. He chuckled as Nevan called this area his corner of the library which Damien guess made sense as he had basically claimed this small little corner of the Library when he had met Landon last year. He smiled as Nevan settled close near him and began telling him how he settled in this nicely and how he feels at home in his house. That made Damien proud as it took him awhile to get used to his house to where it felt like home so he was glad that Nevan settled in good. “Whoa shortcuts to the library ? Look at you Mr smarty pants” He said smiling softly as it was funny that Nevan already was finding shortcuts to enter the library. He smiled as he hadn’t expected Nevan to remember the advice he offered him which was that he would help him if he had any questions on anything. “Ah! It’s good to see you again too and I’m happy to hear you’d remember that, So of course I’m always happy to help!” He smiled softly as he opened his bag as he dug through it. “So you had questions on Astronomy right ? Well ask away!” He said smiling as he enjoyed helping people especially with Astronomy. |

Nevan slid his satchel onto the table, the leather making a muted noise against the wood. He adjusted it once, twice, before finally leaving it where it was. His hands smoothed over the front of his robes in a quiet, practiced motion, and then he sat a little straighter in the chair Damien had left open for him. He tugged his tie, green with silver embroidery at the edge, back into place with a faint but prideful touch, as though making sure it was the first thing anyone would notice about him. He was proud of his house, even if it didn't have the best reputation.
His gaze shifted toward Damien, thoughtful rather than impatient, as though he was still shaping the question he wanted to ask. He wasn’t one to rush through conversation. Silence, to him, had its own sort of value. When he finally spoke, his tone was polite, low, but carried with it the steadiness of someone who rarely asked without reason.
“Yes. We’ve only just begun with the basics, mostly orbit paths and surface characteristics. But…” He leaned back just slightly, folding his hands in his lap, “I’ve been thinking about the retrograde motion. How planets appear to move backward across the sky sometimes.”
He paused, his eyes following the spines of the books stacked in the next row of shelves, before he returned his focus to Damien. “It makes sense, of course, when you think of Earth overtaking them in orbit. But I noticed something while reading — the retrograde of Mars is far more dramatic than Jupiter’s or Saturn’s. The ‘loop,’ if you chart it, is wider and faster. Whereas for Jupiter or Saturn it’s more drawn out, slower, and narrower. Why is that? Is it only because Mars is closer to us, or are there other factors that affect how it appears?”
He let the question linger in the air between them, his tone calm but his gaze sharp, betraying his genuine interest. His fingers brushed idly against the clasp of his satchel before stilling, a subtle fidget quickly subdued. “It struck me as one of those little details people mention but don’t linger on, and I thought you might know more, given your interest on Astronomy. It's alright if you don't, or course, I'm sure I can find my answer if I search through some more books.” He looked around the little space that Damien had claimed to himself, nodding in approval. And then he laid out some parchment in front of himself, quil in hand, ready to write down notes from what Damien told him.

Damien smiled at him softly as he waited to hear the question he wanted to ask them. He assumed it was something to do with the planets as Damien knew that’s what they were studying due to him studying that last year. Damien watched as Nevan fixed his appearance which he seemed to do alot of times he never understood why he did that so often but he just assumed it was something he’s done ever since he was little. His eyes shine with excitement as the question he asked was pretty interesting and Damien luckily knew the answer to it. “I think your one of the first people to ask me that question but fear not as I actually know the answer to it” He said smiling before pulling out his personal astronomy book before flipping to a page about mars before smiling at him. “Okay so you are partially right due to mars closer proximity to earth it does make the retrograde wider and faster but it’s also due to when a planet overtakes a slower moving outer planet it causes our line of sight of that planet to change.” He stopped for a second giving himself room to breath and to make sure Nevan was processing it before continuing “So factoring that in with earth overtaking mars which is a slow moving outer planet it causes us to see a different sight of it making it appear as if it is moving backwards” Once he stopped he smiled softly as he was proud of his knowledge before looking directly at Nevan. “Does any of that make sense to you?” He only asked that as not to say Nevan wasn’t smart but Damien knew the way he talked when he explained things which was sometimes fast as well how his brain worked so he wanted to make sure Nevan got the point. |

Nevan listened carefully, his expression unreadable at first, though his dark eyes stayed fixed on Damien the whole time. He had the manner of someone who didn’t like to interrupt, even when he might have already grasped the meaning. His posture remained straight, shoulders squared, but his hand drifted to the edge of the table, tapping a finger against the wood in a faint, rhythmic beat. It wasn’t impatience, it was something he occasionally did when thinking.
When Damien paused, Nevan gave the faintest of nods, acknowledging both the question and the care Damien had taken to phrase it clearly. “Yes. It does make sense,” he said after a brief silence. His tone was calm, steady, but carried that same glint of curiosity as before. “Closer planets move more quickly, so when Earth overtakes Mars, the difference is sharp and the path appears wider. With Jupiter or Saturn, the difference is smaller, stretched across more distance, so the loops look narrower. It's not really that hard once you have someone to explain it to you.”
His voice was measured, almost cautious, but also pretty grateful. Then he tilted his head slightly, the faintest crease forming at his brow. “So… it isn’t only proximity, but also the speed of each planet’s orbit. Mars is close and slower than Earth, so the effect is exaggerated. Jupiter and Saturn, farther away, move even slower, but their distance makes the apparent change less dramatic.”
Nevan let his hands fold neatly on the table once more, his expression easing back into one of composure. “Yes, I think I follow. Thank you.” He gave a small, polite smile at that, though his eyes still lingered on Damien with a spark of appreciation for the explanation.
He adjusted his tie again, something he had always done since he was even younger, an attempt to look perfect, the green and silver settling crisply against his shirt, before adding in a quieter tone, “You explained it nicely. The book I read made it sound unnecessarily complicated.” His fingers brushed once more over the clasp of his satchel, a fleeting gesture of habit. “You’ve made it seem far simpler.”
He left the words at that, respectful and without excess praise, but there was no mistaking the sincerity in his expression.

Damien smiled softly as he was happy that he made it easier for Nevan to understand as he wanted to make sure that his words made sense to him. “Ah perfect! I’m glad that you understand it I was worried I didn’t explain it well” He chuckled while he smiled and closed the book before putting it aside on the table. “So did you have any other questions you would like to ask me?” He asked as he always did enjoy answering questions that others might have it’s another reason why he became a Astronomy intern. He just let out a small but gentle and soft laugh as Nevan explained how the book he read made it feel like it was way more complicated then it had to be. “Yeah some books will do that it’s why I try to research as much as I can as you never know what’s all true and what all isn’t” Damien learnt that lesson from a young age that if you didn’t question a lot of things you were told and try to figure it out for yourself then you’d never know if what you are saying is true or not. “So yeah any other question you got throw them my way man!” His smile just got wider as he looked at Nevan as to be honest he was just happy to see Nevan again and help him out. |

Nevan shook his head lightly, his dark hair falling across his forehead before he smoothed it back again with his hand. “No, I don’t have any more questions. Not for now, at least,” he said, his voice soft but even. “Your explanation was more than enough. I understand most of everything else we're learning.”
He adjusted the strap of his satchel where it crossed his chest, fingers brushing the leather a few times as though grounding himself, giving himself confidence. He still wasn't used to frequent social interactions. “I’ve been enjoying Astronomy more than I expected,” he admitted after a short pause. His tone carried honesty, though it was carefully measured. “The skies are beautiful. Predictable, in their own way. It’s reassuring. There’s something satisfying to me about charting the movements. And it's calming, the night sky.” His lips curved faintly, a shadow of a smile, though it was gone quickly enough.
“But I think,” he continued, sitting a little straighter, “That I enjoy Potions the most. Perhaps because of my father, but I genuinely enjoy doing it too. It's precise and requires discipline, it's easy to do it right if you're focused and know what you're doing. I like the professor too, even if he's strict. I think I like that, it grounds me. To have rules, but ones that are necessary and not annoying.” He tilted his head slightly, considering his own words. “Those classes are enjoyable.”
His gaze flicked down to his folded hands which he placed in his lap, then back to Damien. “Charms too. Simple spells, but practical. They’ve been helpful, and I know we'll be learning even more helpful ones.” He gave a small nod, as if confirming it to himself. “The Levitation Charm, The Unlocking Charm, Lumos. I've used those already. I'm not the best in Charms, but I'm pretty good, I get the spells in a few tries.”
He fell quiet after that, letting the statement hang in the air for a moment, and he pulled at the sleeves of his robe. “Astronomy is calming, Charms and Potions are practical. I think I like those things.” His eyes lingered on Damien again, polite but steady. “What about you? Are second year classes hard?”

Damien was glad that he was able to answer all of Nevan questions with efficiency as well as making it to where he could understand it as he always enjoyed helping others no matter what. “Ah! That’s quite wonderful, I’m glad that I could help you out!” He flashed him a quick but charming smile showing off his pearly white teeth before listening to Nevan as he spoke about the subjects he was enjoying. It gave Damien pride to hear that Nevan enjoyed astronomy as he loved hearing how other people enjoyed his most favorite class with his most favorite professor as well. He couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle when Nevan mentioned how he believes potions is his favorite class it made sense as most Slytherins like potion class plus with Nevan father being a healer who brew his own potions so it felt like that was just ingrained in his blood. What really shocked Damien was that he also liked charms as he hadn’t expected that at all but the charms teacher she was a lovely lady who Damien enjoyed. “Wow I’m glad your enjoying the classes! And I had a feeling potions would be your subject you continue to prove yourself more and more today!” He smiles brightly at him before tilting his head thinking about the question Nevan had just asked him. Did he think second year classes are hard, Damien couldn’t really give a definitive answer only his opinion really. “Hm…personally for me my classes still feel like first year classes just new stuff to learn! For some it may be harder for others it may not be but for me it dosent feel too hard so I know you’ll be able to handle them next year!” He smiled as he couldn’t wait to see how Nevan did in his classes next year and after that. |
