Passing Time

It was cold here, even in the spring. And quiet too, even with the visitors from international schools. That is, visitors like Akerrah. She, of course, was the visitors' visitor. She had barely—no, hadn't even—gotten used to Beauxbatons when they'd come up here.
How many nights had she gone to sleep knowing she'd wake up back in their grubby apartment in the 19th arrondissement? How many days had she seemed to sleepwalk through because none of this—none—seemed real?
The only way she could try to understand what was happening was to try and ground herself in something she knew—something real, no matter what kind of magic was otherwise going on around her. That was why she'd found a spot out here to just be.
It was a nice large rock, relatively flat on the top, not too far off from the Quidditch Pitch (what a daunting place that was) and other landmarks on the Hogwarts grounds. That made it a perfect perch for both the girl and her tools. Akerrah placed a small wooden box besides her as the Scottish clouds hung overhead. Gingerly, she took out some twine and started beading together some white stones and metal pieces. Some were round and others more square, but she used them to try and create geometric patterns together in the spirit of what was made on the Ivory Coast.
Making jewelry was something she had done with her mother. As a pastime, it seemed both connect her with her culture and help calm her mother down. Sometimes, they tried to sell them up near Montmartre and the other tourist areas. But for now, she just hoped this simple activity could help her to feel less alone in what was still a new place—a new world, really.

Passing Time

She pulled the string taut before replacing a white stone, then over and over again. There was calm way about stringing it all together that seemed to make things, however briefly, feel more manageable. So, it was one after the other such that she did not notice the approach of another.
"What are you making? Is it jewelry?" came the voice as Akerrah looked up to find another student—with night skin like her own—staring back at her. She looked taller and older, but genuinely interested, unlike many of the students she'd met here in the UK. "Oui," she said before correcting, "Yes, a necklace I think. I think I have enough." Her fingers lilted to the side as she counted the stones and the metal fragments.
"Do you want to...?" she said, scooting over slightly. There were plenty of English words to finish that sentence—sit, join, help—but her voice just trailed off. So rarely had anyone in the Wizarding World wanted to get to know her or her work in any real way. So much seemed like politeness and even that wasn't always guaranteed.
And there was one other thing of interest: the broom in her hand. Seemed there were plenty of people around here who were good at flying. Maybe she could really figure out this whole Quidditch thing.
And yet, she was contented to focus on stringing the stones for now. Flying still seemed intimating whereas this was easy. And maybe making a friend too could be easy? Maybe not, but she'd certainly like that as she sat up here on this rock, stringing metal and stone on tha string
