New year, new Astra. Gone was the girl obsessed with society, back was the girl obsessed with knowledge. Forbidden knowledge, to be specific, knowledge of dark and ancient magics and evidences of them, particularly evidences of them all around the school- Astra's obsession was no longer with the garish dance of high society, the mind games with such little payoff for her future. Half-bloods could certainly be Unspeakables, and social webs more twisted that a labyrinth and reputation strung with the brittle threads of cobwebs didn't do much good in the research rooms, when one was practically touching the threads of the universe, brushing past the literal door to death.

Astra was searching for a book on curses. Nothing incredibly particular, just a little beyond what they learned in DADA class. Nothing terribly adventurous yet, she was still hooked on other beings of the wizarding world. Seers, goblins, dhampirs, werewolves. All she could learn of their histories, politics, world standing from ancient tomes, recent works, the archive of articles and newspapers. And of course her own research regarding what sort of hell Hogwarts' own history held took up a fair bit of research time. But a short venture into dark spells was far beyond due.

Astra found a suitable work, something detailing a historical record of curses and their use in European magical society, and sat down to read. A letter for Aunt Aces requesting more books sat beside some note paper and her inkwell on the table in front of her. Astra herself had the book in her lap and was sitting sideways in the chair, legs swung over one armrest and back braced against the other.

Meiyu's withdrawal over the New Year did not go unnoticed by her family. Her mother, aimlessly attempting to lure the girl into their open kitchen for quality time during the brief hours where the sun emit its rays onto the kitchen table situated between two large windows, though, to no avail. It was to be expected. The young girl's action resulted in the loss of a life, firmly believing she was solely to blame, Meiyu spent most of her time at home fixating on anything within her sight, staring lifelessly for hours on end. Reaching dire depths, an intervention had been staged one day by her uncle Alaric, the eldest Knight, who encompassed many traits of his father Erius, Meiyu's grandfather.

During his brief intervention, which Meiyu mostly blanked out during one of his lecture like rambles, he briefly mentioned difficulties at work, notably with a rise of curse usage. His position within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and her own fathers involvement in similar matters as an Auror, momentarily piqued her interest, desiring to hear more but too infatuated by a wide-set of new emotions; forcing the young girl to face inner conflict, debating whether she'd succumb to pure evil at the ripe age of twelve. To her avail, she had dismissed the interaction, almost forgetting the conversation in entirety until she received an OWL from her dear uncle. The letter began as it always had, asking how she was and how classes were going, a format she had grown accustomed to as a sense of formality taught within the pure-blooded Knight family; far too engrossed in maintaining pleasantries and rarely delving into personal matters such as work struggles. Yet, this time, Alaric had referenced issues at work once more, an influx of paperwork and processing the cases he had mentioned over his impromptu intervention; one that he had been coerced into doing at the hands of his only sister who had the misfortune of being Meiyu's mother.

Combined with the inability to slumber to her hearts content, her mind relaying the images of that fateful night, day had once more welcomed the inhabitants of planet Earth. The sounds of Meiyu's roommates shuffling around under the warm orange hues of sunlight that transmit through the large glass stained windows, forcing the young girl to depart from the bed she had lay hours in, glaring at her chosen bed's drapes, lulling over how many stairs and stone tiles existed within the fortress that portrayed itself as a prestigious institution. After taking her a painfully slow time readying herself for the mundane day ahead, she began to aimlessly depart the corridors following her departure from the Gryffindor tower, finding herself on the ground floor once she had gained some sense of consciousness.

Her heavy eyes lazily trailed across the large hall, noting the students slipping into the library and following behind them halfheartedly. Tired beyond comprehendible, the sight of books alone should have prompted the young lioness to seek a quiet corner in fruitful hopes of succumbing to sweet slumber, yet, the reminder of her uncle's struggles at work rekindled her mind, growing curious on what curses he was talking about; being far too young to sit at the adult table and engage in such topic during family dinners. Besides, it would be highly unlikely unforgivable curses were on the first year. Enticed by a new desire, Meiyu's brain pushed her immense tiredness aside, fixated on a new goal for the day and providing her with a light boost of adrenaline to indulge her newfound desire. Slowly moving through the countless aisles full of books she never cared to read and likely never will, her eyes narrowed in futile attempts of reading a few bindings, non striking out as useful.

Sighing discontentedly, Meiyu had never been fond of exerting too much energy over new interests; having little to none beside harassing students and inflicting pain on others, the incident over Christmas had left her feeling hesitant and paranoid she was being watched. The painful reminder she wished to bury came to surface once more, forcing her to pull her gaze away from the cascade of books, diverting her attention to assessing those around her, her eyes quickly falling on a ginger. Being familiar with faces and spending far too much time observing others than she'd ever admit, she recalled the first few days within the castle and the dramatics that it ensued. Becoming fixated on maintaining an O average across her report card, she had grown more withdrawn from others, though, it was also highly accredited to the off-putting personality she had developed during her short time within the institution.

"Hmm, surely not?" She mumbled, moving hesitantly closer to the girl with an awful presence, partially fearing another outburst from the like-minded girl, unbeknownst to Meiyu. Inching closer, peering over her shoulder, noting the uncouth mannerisms which were beyond unladylike for someone she assumed to be of respectable blood. As Meiyu scanned the open book in the girls lap, her eyes widened in a mixture of shock and confusion of the contents detailed in the book; one which detailed a historical record of curses along with their use within Europe's magical society — not entirely the book she had searched for, but it was the beginning. Unable to stop herself from awful manners resulting in an intrusion and invasion of ones personal space and privacy, Meiyu interjected loudly with, "Where did you find that?"

Eyes widening in shock at the verbalisation of her internal monologue, Meiyu gasped, craning her neck to check if students nearby protested with groans in response to the blare of her uncontrolled vocal tone. With confirmation of no issues, she swiftly moved around the girl, pulling the free chair besides her out to take a seat; another exhibit of Meiyu's awful manners at the consequence of sleep deprivation, such behaviour which would not go without punishment had she done this at home or within the walls of the Knight Manor. "Sorry, where did you get that book?" She piqued once more with a significantly lower vocal tone, almost whisper-like. She parted her lips once more as though to speak, but she paused, hesitating on sharing her reasoning behind her intrusion despite the similar interest in the topic; for all she knew, the girl was likely to have an outburst once more, one she was in no mood for given the circumstances she had found herself in.
NOTE: so long sorry lol
