XXX<<----- Picture it like this, but not romantic
XXand without all the floweriness and outdoor...ness
For background, Raiame is Eonaria's twin brother, Kimpy is the family house elf. This is a major part of Eonaria's character development. Anyone looking for reasoning on blood status prejudice, scroll down until the chunkier green paragraphs start popping up.
XXXThe night sky shimmered with thousands upon thousands of stars, the light of the moon casting its rays upon the carpeted floor of the library. A few candles and lamps glowed a soft yellow, but the ones nearest them had been turned off. For some reason, they both appreciated simple quiet moments in darkness. Raiame sat in a plush armchair, his right leg propped comfortably over his left, a book held in hand. Eonaria lay curled at his side, arms and head tucked into his lap.
XXX“Rairai, why do you hate Muggleborns?” Eonaria asked softly. He didn’t respond for a long moment. Raiame flipped a few pages, the quiet rustling providing a soothing background noise. After a while, which was spent gazing impatiently at the books piled high around them, Eonaria finally recieved a response: “They come from Muggle families.”
XXX“…that’s not their fault, though.” She fiddled with the plush fabric, pondering silently. After a moment, she added uncertainly. “I have friends who are Muggleborns.”
XXX“…who?” His eyes narrowed by the slightest amount, near imperceptible to anyone else, but Eonaria caught it. With a grimace, she responded, "...well, I suppose we aren't close friends, but... a Gryffindor boy... a Ravenclaw girl... another Gryffindor girl who I suppose isn't quite my friend but was pretty nice... and..." Eonaria paused as she remembered a rather catastrophic incident with a Muggleborn in this very library they were sitting in. "...one more Ravenclaw girl, but she wasn't... particularly friendly. She yelled at me." She fidgeted anxiously.
XXXRaiame let out a long, slow breath. "See? They are unaccustomed to our ways. That Muggleborn-" He nearly spat out the word, as though it disgusted him- but he wouldn't do that. Raiame was too dignified to spit. "-aggravated you. And moreover... why do you tend to classify them by how 'nice' they are? Friends aren't everything, Naria. You have to learn to rely on yourself." He exhaled a long-suffering sigh. "The moment Mother and Father aren't around to watch you, and we become separated by house, you go frolicking off and befriending the inferior."
XXXEonaria narrowed her eyes. "The inferior? Excuse you, they can be just as bright and talented as us." Raiame scoffed. "On the contrary, they will always be behind. We were raised with tutors. With proper parents who taught us the proper way to behave. Have you memorized our quote-on-quote 'mantra' yet?" He raised an eyebrow calmly.
XXX"Purity is the key to one's future." She sulked. "The gates of life unlock only to the strong, the intelligent, the resilient, the worthy." The words came out monotonous and bitter, like she had practiced them dozens of times. Raiame sighed. "Incorrect. The gates of life unlock only to the intelligent, the resilient, the strong, the worthy." Eonaria threw up her hands. "That's literally the same thing! I just screwed up the order a bit, that's all. You're being ridiculous."
XXX"You have had three years to memorize twenty two words." He replied mildly. "I did so in two days. How have you not perfected it yet?" Eonaria rolled her eyes. "You're just a perfectionist. Plus, the whole thing is stupid." She grumbled. Raiame frowned. "Where have you been picking up such ineloquent speech?"
XXX"Oh, I'm so sorry for not wanting to sound like a snobby fancy-pants all the time." Eonaria growled, shoving him with her shoulder. He didn't deign to respond to this, merely flipping another page. She glowered at him for a moment before sitting back and sighing. "Fine. What do you think?"
XXX"I shall not answer that question. I know it will only lead to another one of your temper tantrums." Raiame responded smoothly. Eonaria looked outraged. "Wha- hey!" She crossed her arms irritably. "Alright, alright. I won't get angry or sad or mad or whatever- at least until the end."
XXX"...I suppose that's at least somewhat reasonable." Her brother sighed. "Very well. Listen carefully, little sister." He turned to face her, putting down his stupid book at last. "This is going to be quite the extensive monologue, so I'll break it down into bite-sized pieces for your naive little brain to process, ne?" Raiame prodded her forehead with a slight smirk and her jaw dropped. How dare he?! Eonaria knew she wasn't allowed to say anything, so she settled for glaring at him and kicking his shin, which elicited no reaction at all.
XXX"Let's see... first. Not the most important, mind you, but it's first on the list. House elves." He pronounced it simply. "Kimpy seems perfectly content with us. All house elves like working. They don't want to be paid or set free- the only exception was that one anomaly a few decades ago. But Muggleborns seem to think we are enslaving them. While that may be the case in the sheer, factual definition of a 'slave,' we do not treat house elves with cruelty. Kimpy is not punished for ridiculous things such as dropping a pan or missing a spot of dust." Eonaria remained quiet. An issue such as this one hadn't occurred to her very often, and she hadn't encountered anyone freaking out about the freedom and rights of house elves yet. She shifted uneasily, sensing the overload of pure logic Raiame was about to deliver.
XXX"Next." He linked his hands together, resting his chin on them. "History. Almost no one likes reading about goblin rebellions. No matter the effort put into those lessons, it's simply uninteresting to hear about Urg the Unclean and whatnot. However, all of that is important to our culture. How each creature became classified in the Ministry, why goblins work at Gringotts yet stay independent. Yet many- not all, I admit- Muggleborns feel insecure about placing money and loans for their school scholarships in the hands of strange creatures. After all, they have no Wizarding money of their own, without Wizarding parents." He sighed.
XXX"And yes, some wizards also do not trust goblins with their money- but goblins do take binding contracts very seriously. You just have to... close all the loopholes, and there you have it: the safest place for your money. Goblins have fought for their right to live mostly independent from wizards, yet Muggleborns still doubt them and suspect thievery." Raiame inhaled a calming breath. Eonaria personally felt like he just counteracted his own argument, but she often did that too. I've, like, literally never heard that issue come up with Muggleborns before?? Where is he even getting this from? She held her tongue and waited, her foot tapping anxiously on the carpeted floor. But as he failed to continue, staring down the aisles of bookshelves, Eonaria grew impatient. "Oi. Curfew is soon, you know. Besides, are... are you sure about that one?"
XXX"Certainly." Raiame hummed. "That may have been one of my weaker arguments, but it is a contributing factor. Moving on... blood. You understand how blood purity works, yes?" She huffed. "Well, duh. You've been lecturing me about it for years." He smiled slightly. "Indeed. Care to offer me the definition?"
XXX"Someone of unmixed magical ancestry or descent." Eonaria sighed. "Correct. I'm glad to see I managed to drill one thing into your head. And hopefully by the conclusion of this little conversation you will be able to understand exactly why Muggleborns are inferior." Raiame replied wryly. "We are pure-bloods. Our parents are pure-bloods, their parents are pure-bloods, and those before them were all of pure descent. Such consistency is crucial to maintaining strong magic inheritance. On the other hand, we have Muggles. Humans with absolutely no magic in them. They cannot produce magic, they cannot pass on magical blood. So when a pure-blood with magic has a child with a Muggle, their child is half non-magical. Unfortunate, isn't it? And when two Muggles have a child, it occasionally turns out to be magical. Let me ask you, Naria, just how do you think that Muggleborn obtained magic?" He leaned forward, making eye contact with intent. Two shades of brilliant jade green reflected back at each other as Eonaria visibly gulped. "Ah... they, um... genetic mutation...?" It was the only explanation she could think of.
XXXRaiame laughed softly. "Genetic mutation. You think so? Let's see..." he hummed nonchalantly. "Stealing magic? Impossible. Manifesting it in some obscure way, from some higher power? Highly doubtful, and no one has proved such a thing. Now think about this: squibs. Squibs have no magic, but have pure-blood parents. How pitiful. They are exiled from the Wizarding society and are forced to marry Muggles, who have no magic. They produce a Muggle. And this continues until one day... a magical gene surfaces in the child. Wonderful, they have magic. But they received this magic from a long ago combination of a squib, an objectively inferior person, and a Muggle, who is, well, a Muggle." Raiame sat back, his point made, observing her expressions with a hint of amusement. "Do you see it now, little sister? From birth, Muggleborns have always been inferior, by gene. Yes, this is not their fault, but it's not our fault that they are simply different, either." Eonaria sat there, stunned into silence by the sheer amount of connections he had just done out loud.
XXXAfter a long, comfortable pause, she finally found her voice again. "I... are... are you sure? Has- I mean, is that real?" Raiame sighed. "Naria, our tutors taught us this ages ago. I cannot believe I have to reiterate a week's worth of lessons for you." She remained quiet, burying her face into his robes. "Oh." Eonaria mumbled, her voice muffled.
XXXShe felt both defeated and astonished, faced with reality. Was that really how it worked? But even if Muggleborns were genetically inferior, that didn't mean they were terrible people who should be discriminated against. Eonaria was so confused, she didn't even know what follow up question to ask. "S-so..."
XXXRaiame patted her head. "Don't worry. Now you realize, right? You are merely being silly as always. But I suppose I cannot imagine you any other way. And, as you said, curfew is approaching. It is time we depart, isn't it? Sleep is important." In a bit of a daze, Eonaria stood up slowly, allowing herself to be led out of the library and into the corridors, their footsteps emitting the tiniest of thumps as they walked. A draft was coming in with the night, causing her to shiver with this new revelation. "Rai-" Raiame merely tucked a comforting arm around her, pulling her in closer. "Hush, Naria. Good night."
