Had Fabian been a few life stages younger, had he been the man of his youth, he would be crowing 'I told you so's from the rooftops. How long? Eight years. Eight years since he had come to this school, eight years of butting heads with Plott over and over and over again over everything, most of which being the continued endangerment of his students across the Atlantic. How long had he insisted the other shoe would drop, that the tentative balance of fates would tip, and that the unrest of the Magical UK would catch them all in the crosshairs? How long had he warned of a second fatality? Too long.

Now Plott was gone. The empty seats staring back at him in his classroom kindled a pure and righteous anger and an overwhelming sense of loss in his heart. Their loss had been miniscule compared to others, but a loss was a loss and it hurt all the same. His colleagues encouraged him to take a break. His partner had been injured and his boys put in harms way. Surely that warranted the tireless teacher a break? But she was there and well enough, though correspondences were more frequent and urgent than ever, and the boys were at Castelobruxo, which was not ideal but he had more faith in the newly-named Headmistress Fernandez's institution than he did Headmaster Lear's.

Damage control. That was the job he gave himself. His office, always open, saw more students than usual, and more than just his regulars. Fabian was perhaps not the best at this sort of thing, but he had heard here and there that the little 'therapy sessions' as the students had deemed them were helpful.

Each of the staff shouldered a bit of the load left to them by Plott's disappearance for a while, but it soon became obvious they could not continue this way. The school needed a figurehead, of course, but tensions has risen and dissent was more common than ever.

A staff meeting on a rainy weekend in the latter weeks of October. No one has seen hide or hair of Headmaster Plott or Headmistress Sato, and their Japanese peers had already named a new headmistress. The Americans needed to follow, and soon.

"We don't need someone who can file papers and organize field trips, we need someone who can fix Plott's mess," Fabian led with the day of the meeting. If there was any 'upside' to the tragedy, it was that his animosity towards his former boss was free and he could spew as much vitriol as he liked. He did not nominate himself for the role, but as more facets of what exactly 'fixing Plott's mess' would entail were revealed, the discussion led to him.

His first act as Headmaster of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was to release a formal apology to the students, their families, and the citizens of Wizarding America at large. "This is a new era. An era in which we will not make the mistakes of our predecessors, an era in which we will strive above all for the safety and protection of our students. An era in which our youth will not be the victims of tragedy such as this."

His second act was to hire a new Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. His third was to notify Sarai that the decision was well and truly final. By the time he moved into his new office, he was on act seven or eight, but he stopped keeping track at four. This was a new era for Ilvermorny, and Fabian made it his mission to ensure this era was all he had said it would be.
