Clad in a tight pink cardigan, baby blue plaid short skirt, and a pair of white heels, The Ravenclaw was back within her safe haven; the corner of the abandoned classroom. Winnie struggled to keep her emotions in check as she crafted several letters meant for her friends.

It was Saturday, around three days after she had sought Mathias out in the dungeons. She could not continue to hide within her dorm room, lest her Ravenclaw peers catch on to her. They were so... Irritatingly attuned to every shift in her mood, how she would eventually crack beneath the pressure of their questions. It was the cost of living among most of the school's brightest witch and wizards. Despite being in her fifth year at Hogwarts, Winnie still found the Sorting Hat's decision to place her in Ravenclaw to be confusing. She could only conclude the hat had some sort of twisted taste in humor.

The silence in the room was a welcome change, only broken by the constant scratch of her quill against parchment. She worked quickly to put word to paper. The thought of being discovered by someone pushed her to write faster, despite the burning in her eyes from unshed tears.

Her thoughts drifted to Mathias, and how disarming every touch and kiss had been. How they had stolen her breath and her will to fight. Despite her efforts she had crumbled beneath him and accepted her fate. His presence, his gaze, it had worked its way beneath her skin, until there was no place she could hide from him.

Even now his touch seemed to linger... The ease he had lifted her with, his hands sliding through her hair, his darkened stares, and low voice rumbling threats between kisses, 'You haven’t seen what I’ll do if anyone tries to take you from me.'. His words had been laced with an intensity that terrified her.

He hadn't given Winnie a choice, but she could recognize a small crack in his demeanor, a flicker of something raw and almost... anxious. 'If you ever truly leave me, I won’t stop looking until I bring you back. You’re mine, and no one else will ever have you.'

Eventually, the truth had slammed into her like a tidal wave. That these were not empty threats, that Mathias Pride would destroy himself and everything in his path to ensure she stayed. She could not risk anyone she cared about meddling and getting caught in the crossfire. Not when the threads that Mathias so carefully weaved around her were like a noose tightening with each passing day.
Dear Percival,

I am writing to let you know I have made my choice; next summer I will marry Mathias.

I know this may come as a shock to you, considering what I shared with you over the summer, but I realized that he is the person I am meant to be with. After Mathias and I had our first ever fight I became scared and determined to push him away. My paranoia got the best of me. My panic attacks became a daily occurrence and I started to believe the worst case scenarios that played over and over again in my mind.

Please don’t try to change my mind; I’m certain of this decision, and I need to move forward with my life. I love Mathias, I can't keep breaking his trust by spending time with another man. If you see me in the hallways, please do not try to talk to me. Please do not reach out to Matt or his family.

I'm sorry, thank you for your kindness.

Goodbye,
Winnie
The quill in the Ravenclaw's hand trembled, the ink bleeding onto the paper. She stared at the words she had written for Percival, the ink had blurred the final sentence, but perhaps it was for the best. A tear ricocheted against the parchment, but Winnie started to fold the letter before it could get stained and further. Despite the rocky start to their friendship, the Slytherin had made her believe that good existed after her world had been shattered when she'd discovered her longtime boyfriend had been poisoning her.

Her affection for him was a weakness that could too easily be exploited. Even Finn, who never stood a real chance of stealing her from Mathias, had been tormented. Although, he had cursed Matt and insulted him... Speaking of the younger Gryffindor, although he seemed to have turned with his tail between his legs, he was still a liability. She would write him a letter next.
Finn,

I have no doubt you have read the Daily Prophet by now; Matt and I are engaged. I am writing this short note to simply request you continue to leave us alone. I do not know if it is your Gryffindor nature, but I am not a damsel in distress. I do not need to be rescued. I love Matt. We are happy together.

- Winnie
Next she had to ensure that her friends did not start to question Mathias directly. She couldn’t sever all the ties, it would draw far too much suspicion. She knew her girls would end up trying to dig up something. She decided it was safer to keep them within reach and let them believe they were helping her. Perhaps if they were distracted by the role they needed to play, they would not bother to seek out the truth.

So, she would play the excited fiancée once more. She danced and sung about how she was going to marry the man she loved, how she would become Winnie Pride, maybe they wouldn’t see the cage Mathias had built around her.
Dear Evelynn/Dee/Aly/Rebecca (each would be given the same letter),

Hi! It's your friend, Winnie Harper. I wanted to tell you that I will be getting married this summer, and I would love it if you would be my bridesmaid!

With that said, if you choose to accept to be a bridesmaid, I must ask something of you. Due to the controversial nature of our marriage, a lot of people are against us right now. So, this isn't easy to say, but I need you to respect my decision to marry Mathias. I need you to trust me, and know that I am extremely happy and loved. I really need my girls to be by my side; I need your strength now more than ever.

Love,
Winnie
The quill fell from her hand and clattered against the table as she buried her face into her hands. Her emotions finally boiling over, she'd release a scream of frustration that echoed against the classroom's bare walls.

The note was delivered by a small owlet at breakfast and very nearly landed in his porridge. Oh god, he had not forgotten about handing in another assignment had he? With just a glance at the neat handwriting he determined the sender was female, which eliminated Starwise, Lécuyer and perhaps most importantly Browne. Getting tapped by your head of house was rarely a good thing, after all. Maybe Fresnel? Despite a rocky start he had grown rather fond of his charms Professor who never stopped believing in him, no matter how slow his progress had been.

When he unfolded the paper however, he knew it wasn't Fresnel who'd sent it. There was a distinct lack of 'Mr. Connor' although that manner of address didn't entirely eliminate a student origin. After all, Evelynn tended to insist on addressing him by his surname, even when turning him into a ferret for insulting math and alleging a romance between Decipio and Dralt (a small price to pay).

He read the note. Winnie? She was about the last person he had expected to hear from. Last time he'd seen her she had been a blubbering mess and had accused him of forgery and stalking. It was obviously Pride's doing, but Winnie had picked his side regardless. There were many ways for a summer romance to peter out and Winnie chose to douse his childish affection with both sand and water. Then she'd stomped on the smouldering remains for good measure. The real kicker had been his escort out of Puddifoot's like he really was guilty of the crimes Winnie and Mathias had alleged. Either Pride was good at persuasion or he had pulled a few strings to make it so.

He went over Winnie's neat handwriting once more before he crumpled it in his hand. Feelings of rejection and betrayal had died down quickly after the events in Puddifoot's, but now threatened to resurface. Why did he care about Winnie anyway? She'd been friendly and pleasant during Summer Camp and he had thought they shared a thing or two. Maybe it was far more base than all that, maybe it was just because she looked pretty and he was coming into an age where he started to notice such things with far keener interest. Yet that appeal could never make up for the emotional blows that had been dealt. Winnie had made her bed and now she would have to lie in it.

Back in the Gryffindor common room the crackling fire made quick work of Winnie's demeaning note. Ignoring her was probably smarter, lest he'd fan the flames and fuel Pride's baseless rumor that he was obsessed with her. Showing restraint would be the right and noble thing to do.

Which was why he reached for a scrap of parchment and scrawled a singular reply:
I never liked pink anyway.

- Finn
By midday his answer would have been delivered and with it, a weight fell off his shoulders. @Winnie Harper could stuff it.

I am not the kind of girl who should be rudely barging in on a white-veil occasion...
✰✰✰
Aly, on the other hand, wasn't at breakfast when she received the letter - and good thing, too, because that would not have been a scene that anyone wanted to see. She was in the owlery, actually, having just sent off a letter of her own, having no idea whether it would reach its intended recipient (or if he would read it). Feeling actually quite pleased with herself, as any sixteen-year-old girl would be writing a foolish, fanciful letter to a hot celebrity crush, the curly-haired Ravenclaw turned to make her way back down the stairs, hoping that she would perhaps be able to grab a hot roll from the eagle table in the Great Hall before food vanished from the surfaces and she was meant to head off to whatever next the day had in store for her.

She didn't think much of the owl at first as it dive-bombed her from above; the Ravenclaw had never necessarily been the avian sort, despite her House mascot, and in fact she rather preferred cats over birds in general (with the obvious exception of her friend Peri, though human-birds honestly shouldn't count in that description). Swatting it away with a free hand that didn't make contact, but rather swished uselessly through the air as its fingertips just barely brushed the creature's soft feathers, Aly muttered, "Shoo, you feathered rat - I've already sent my letter, I don't need you."

It dive-bombed her again - a feisty thing, that - and this time, when she turned to give it a patented glare that the angsty teenager had all but perfected over the past year, she noticed the letter attached to its leg. Frustration melted away into curiosity as she apologized, nearing it with gentler fingers this time: "I'm sorry, is that for me? Here, let me get that off you..."

Clearly as relieved that Aly had figured out its true purpose there as Aly was to get out of the owlery, the bird let her take the parchment before hooting annoyedly at her and flapping off to its post. Aly rolled her eyes - Annoying things, owls - as she turned and carefully stepped out of the owlery, not wanting to get her boots covered in crushed owl pellets or feathers or whatever else nastiness covered the floor here, and only once she was trotting her way happily down the stairs did she slide her finger beneath the seal and break it to reveal the contents within. Green eyes flitted to the bottom first, to see who had written it - Winnie, a girl in the year younger than her, on the Quidditch team with her, and one of her close friends as of late. Sure, she didn't like the lass's boyfriend - sorry, fiance after that disastrous fall ball, though hopefully not for long - but Aly could hardly fault anyone for poor taste. Hope flitted through her - perhaps, after a month of being engaged to a right prat, the younger girl had finally realised her wrong and was writing to right it by informing Aly of their breakup - but this was quickly dashed as Aly scanned the letter, intaking its terrible contents.

After the first sentence, hope turned to anger - no, rage. Who was this Matthias Pride boy to be taking their Winnie away from them, and so young? Aly's frustration toward the ginger bloke had only multiplied over the last few weeks, even though they'd never met - she had only ever really seen how his actions and words had affected Winnie, causing tears in the locker room and confusion at summer camp - and so she had written a... somewhat inflammatory article for the Headliner that was due to be published next week that involved more than a couple snide and honestly spiteful remarks about the Pride boy and his decision to propose so young. How fast was he pushing the Harper girl so that she was already writing to ask about bridesmaids? Next summer? Didn't most wizarding engagements last a year, at least? To not only force Winnie into this unwanted marriage so young, but to also rip away from her the fun of the extended planning period - that was just cruel. And Aly was mad at Winnie, somewhat, too. What in the world was the redhead thinking, that Aly would for some reason want any part of this prison-esque charade?

Then she read the last few lines, and the rage faded to pity as the letter fluttered from her fingers to land softly on the stone steps below her feet.

"Of course a lot of people are against you right now," she grumbled, frustratedly turning and kicking the wall beside her (which only resulted in the smarting of her toes), "he's a right twit."

But Winnie didn't deserve that. Winnie deserved happiness and brightness and pink and bows and strawberries, not the dull pureblood life that marrying the Pride boy would surely afford her. Aly herself had grown up in one of those colourless, monotonous, wholly unexciting households - and even then, hers was surely 'pureblood lite' compared to a family like the Prides. She didn't deserve for people to hate her for a decision with which she surely hadn't had anything to do. If there was one thing Aly knew from her parents, it was that breaking out of a pureblood marriage agreement was one of the hardest things to do in this cruel wizarding world. Hesper had done it, but that was for love. What Winnie had for Matthias surely paled in comparison, for that could not be love, no matter how hard she insisted.

Aly bent to pick up the letter, the last line repeating over and over in her head.

I need your strength now more than ever.

It could not any more clearly have been a cry for help, and Aly knew that. If she abandoned the younger eaglet now, that was just one less person Winnie would have to lean on when - if - she married into the Pride family. Staying close to her friends was the only way that Aly could also, thusly, stay close to her enemies. It seemed that the world turned upside down when Matthias Pride was involved. And so she would stay. She would be the strength, a shoulder to lean on, and she would keep an eye out for any chink in the male redhead's armour with which to take him down. Take the wedding down, from the inside, whilst also supporting her friend.

The beginnings of a plan taking shape in her head, Aly shook her head as she jumped down the last few steps and made a beeline for the Headliner office down on the ground floor. If she were to be part of this bridal party, the first step would be changing mentions of Matthias in that upcoming article so that he wouldn't immediately force Winnie to dismiss her as a bridesmaid. Dumb down the mentions of the ginger couple entirely, really, though she couldn't remove them entirely. That would take way too much persuading of her editors, and Aly wasn't sure that she had curried so much favour as to do that quite yet. Changing a few of the more inflammatory comments, however... that she could do, and then she'd write a letter to Winnie back formally accepting the position. Something that seemed excited, with a lot of exclamation points. Maybe in pink.

"Shame," she said to herself under her breath as she headed for the office, "I was quite proud of those insults, too..."
