Halloween

'If I could change the world, I'd make it Halloween. Every single day. And also have world peace!'
– mean girls, the musical
If the students of Ilvermorny looked up while they walked rather than burying their faces in scrolls, books or parchment, they would have noticed numerous flyers advertising a Halloween Party on October 31st, the time unspecified aside from 'whenever classes end, in the evening, outside'. 'wear a super cool costume,' the flyers advised. The flyers were dropped from staircases, strewn across common rooms, pasted up on walls... really, put anywhere someone might see them. Rumour had it that in one of the toilets, every square inch of wall, ceiling and floor had been covered with flyers.
The party was organised by none other than Cyrus Alexander Darsel, resident seventh year and duck enthusiast. He would be attending his own party as a flamboyantly-flavoured version of Weird Barbie from Barbie (2023). His blond hair, usually resting in a purposefully-unruly iteration of a normal person's bedhead, had been gelled to the point of unrecognisability. He had coloured the ends with pink and blue chalk. He wore a pink army jacket over a bright yellow T-shirt, and as bottoms, he wore a pink-and-blue plaid skirt over black biker shorts. The Birkenstocks on his feet ensured that, if he were to walk across any dewy grass, his toes would squeak all night. He was not sure if he would regret this fact later.
As the sun neared the horizon, Cyrus did his best to set up a few small tables. One had an enchanted radio on it, which Cyrus tuned to a channel that was playing some modern wizarding music by some band he'd never heard of. One of the other tables had a bewitched teapot that would pour whatever tea anyone wanted, and he had set what he hoped would be enough cups everywhere else on the table. It was a very crowded table.
Of course, what was a Halloween party without the wonder that was candy? Cyrus scattered various treats along the other tables. Some were harder to find than others: there were lots of jelly slugs and acid pops, but pepper imps were few and far between. There were no chocolate frogs. Maybe some other student had better foresight and would think to bring some. Cyrus had never been known for planning ahead.
Now, he just had to hope that his fellow Ilvermornians arrived and had a super great time!

October really became a time to be alive for Casey. With a successful birthday, an Autumn Ball that he could actually express in confidence how well it went and now a Halloween party back at Ilvermorny. Slowly but surely he was getting back all the times he missed being at social events after grieving and giving off for a year. Nick should be proud of him, wherever he was out there.
Unfortunately Casey still couldn't admit proudly he had any stable friendships at Ilvermorny. After pushing people away for a solid year however, it's not like he could really pin the blame on everyone else. He tried starting a few conversations in classes but they never seemed to blossom beyond the usual, "I've got a spare quill if you need it." Perhaps with an anticipated larger crowd there'd be more chance of him making a friend among his peers, rather than relying on international waters to keep him socialised. Letters with Emily were nice and catching up with Zyair was cool and all, but how long before those connections are cut off by some unforeseen circumstance? A silly fear that could only come from a guy who's now tired of surviving on his own perhaps. Casey was independent, but not invincible, much to his own angsty teen chagrin.
He didn't know what to expect when he arrived at the "party." He was the first to arrive... It was great to be awkward. Other than that though, it seemed to be a nice pleasant atmosphere, with candies and music in the background. A simple but sweet affair, no doubt prone to change when more guests arrive.
He spotted a guy in the most outrageously pink costume he'd ever seen... By Casey's standards at least. Not that it was bad. Just amusing. A hell of a contrast from his navy jeans, black vest and sunglasses sitting idly on top of his head, along with a rushed attempt at recreating the "nuke knucks" sitting on his wrists; what he hoped would be smooth hand guards ended up being detailed albeit slightly misaligned painted cardboard slabs glued together. He knew he should've gone with the more simpler (and probably easier to make) cestuses instead. He was proud of himself however for managing to make a mock replica of the mouse sigil on the green belt he had around his waste.
If Emily saw him now, she'd gush at the fact that he was dressed up as one of the cartoon characters in the comic she bought him for his birthday. Assuming she wouldn't be laughing her rear off first.
Despite the "Throttle" look he was trying to go for, his "Casey-ness" was impossible to hide when he approached the venue, reserved but nonetheless open-minded.
"Hey."

Lucy had never been to a party before. Living on the farm did that to you. But, Halloween was something she had celebrated with her family, dressing up in handmade costumes. For this Halloween party, she had decided to make a costume of a white arctic wolf. Ironic, but cute.
So after her classes were done, she slipped on her costume, shoved on the ears and tail, and walked towards the party. There weren't many people there yet, just a couple of boys. One looked about her age, and one was obviously the host, looking almost adult.
The boy said hello, most likely to the other boy, and Lucy decided to jump in. "Hello? Erm...I assume this is the right place?" She asked timidly, her shyness taking over. She took a deep breath and continued to walk towards the boys.
Her white wolf costume probably looked silly to them, but she was going to try and ignore it. Not really, but she was going to make a small effort to not be very embarrassed.
Although the summer's event still haunted her, she was determined to continue with a positive attitude. And that meant to start partying. It was time to have some fun.
