Some things never changed. One of those things was how utterly mind-numblingly boring history of magic was. It was so boring that it probably had won awards for it. It was so boring that it made even the most studious ravenclowns fall asleep. It was so boring that... that... Cass didn't know. It was so boring that they couldn't even think! Yes, that was it. The opposite was true sadly though, and Cass's brain still raced along at an absolutely mad pace. Just not quite in the direction that the class was heading.
The problem with history wasn't that it was history. History was interesting, and important to learn. It was all the dates, and all the boring boring bits of history that couldn't possibly matter anywhere. Or rather anywhere outside exams. Their plan was just to employ their current winning tactic, which was to study for everything in one big chunk the night before the exam. It might be boring, but at least it wasn't spread out all over the whole year boring. They rocked back on their chair, fingers drumming a beat on the table. Grand plans were all well and good, but today they were still bored. They wondered if they could dive out the window far enough to land in the peaceful, cool water of the lake. Was it worth trying?
Logic told them that they would most certainly get a few broken bones from it. However, Cass Ito was not one to listen to logic. If there was a way out of this class, no matter how risky, they would take it! Although. They had a feeling they shouldn't take that one. Once again, they let out a long sigh. All this, and class hadn't even started yet. If the chair next to them was filled, they would turn to the person that took it. "It's only been 5 minutes and I'm already so bored I'm considering jumping out the window into the lake" they announced to whoever it was.

If you conducted a study on the short twelve year old, people's general reaction to Cass was probably a phase of "what". The generally majority of Hogwarts seemed to a lot less... outgoing than them, which they didn't understand at all. It simply didn't occur to them that some people might not want them bothering them, or if it did they just chose to ignore it completely. Who wouldn't want to hear about whatever ridiculous thing Cass had to say now? Some people seemed to exclusively like hearing their own voice, which was fine to. Cass also liked to talk! They could both talk. Although maybe it might be best if they didn't talk at the same time. Although Cass was certainly down for a who-could-talk-the-loudest competition. They reckoned that their yapping ability could give anyone a run for their money.
Thankfully for everyone else in the rooms poor eardrums, pigtails girl didn't seem to the be the talk nonstop type. Although it was really too soon to tell. Sometimes the people who seemed the shyest when you met them were the most crazy. "What can I say, I'm just so talented" they said jokingly. Then they glanced back at the window. "I wonder if I'm talented enough to be able to actually dive all the way from the window to the lake" this was probably something that it was not good to wonder about. If Cass thought too long about something, they were likely to do it just so that they didn't have to think anymore. They looked at her outstretch hand with a little bit of confusion. It wasn't exactly a common method of greeting new faces around Hogwarts. It almost seemed a bit out of place here, better suited to Pureblood dinner parties than the history of magic classroom.
But still, they shook it anyway. It would be rude to refuse it after all. "Cass Ito" they replied. Should they add their new occupation of history of magic hater on the end? Nah. They had pretty much said it already. Although it should be obvious to anyone in the room, because history sucked and was boring and literally any other subject could be better.

"Thank you!" they beamed. Finally, someone was acknowledging their greatness. Some might say the girls first statement might perhaps have been, just maybe, sarcastic but Cass chose to take it fully seriously. But hey, she wasn't even taking the normal two weeks of consistent annoying doing amazing fun things with to decided she liked them! What an unexpected win from this normally boring class. They should spend more time talking to random girls next to them, if all of them were going to be as great as this one. Spinning their quill around in their hand, they said "You aren't bad either. So far. I reserve the right to change my opinion later if you turn out to be a super nerd". Not that they hated nerds. But too much time spent with books and a desperate need for fresh air wasn't always fun as people who did fun things voluntarily without being forcefully dragged away from studying.
"Of course I know how to swim!" they said, puffing up. They used to beg their tutors to take them down to the river in the summer all the time. It was one of the few things that made them occasionally look at all that book nonsense. "I'm an amazing swimmer. I bet I'm a better swimmer than you. Race me" they issued a claim and challenge. Really, all they could do was dog paddle with great enthusiasm. She didn't need to know that though. Besides, swimming was fun and that was what mattered. Also there had to be a spell to make them swim faster so that they could cheat get a teeny tiny bit of help. "Just joking" they laughed, but then narrowed their eyes "I would totally win though".
It was only then that they noticed that the book she held was not for mere boring notes but for art. Cass was an utterly terrible artist, but they could certainly be an art appreciator. Probably. As long as it wasn't boring. "What are you drawing?" they asked, nosily leaning over in an attempt to peek.
Notes: Apologies for how late this is!
