When was the last time she had stepped inside the duelling club? She can’t remember, it has been so long since then for someone who was actively avoiding this place, not even giving it a glance whenever she finds herself passing by. It just reminds her of her painful losses despite how hard she tried, despite the passion that she had for the said sports.

They weren’t enough. She was a horrible duellist or so she believes. Well, what else is there to believe in? Not a single win, only bad performances. Sure, she had shown her tenacity during her last duels but did those get her anywhere? Nope, they did not unless you count rock bottom then yes, it did got her somewhere, just not where she wanted it to be.

Why is she here then? She had retired from the sport that brought her nothing but misery yet she’s here, entering the duelling club with wand in hand, ready for a duel. She can’t decline Astra’s request for a duel and with Alyssea joining in, it had turned into another form of family bonding. She can’t just let that pass despite the painful memories that quickly rushes in whenever she’s around the duelling club’s vicinity. Maybe it’s time to give duelling a chance? Try to reignite that passion that used to burn.

No, that’s impossible, she can’t go back, not in her current state, not when she knows how duelling can twist her mind, when she knows it can turn her into someone who can be relentless until she sees her opponent down just to see if she has gained enough power. Cruel really but so is duelling. The Gryffindor set her things aside before standing on that piste, pushing away any memories that it might bring. It was now time to stop reminiscing about those for she has a duel to do. “Here we go again…”

The Hufflepuff grinned. "If you want Raizel to go easy, you might as well ask her not to use any Third year spells, or even Fourth year Charms!"

Third year was definitely the year where every spell they learned would be more exciting than the last. Bandaging charms and healing spells, explosions and knee-reversals, and spider-conjuration would change the game on a lot of strategies that the badger was preparing for the new racing year. Second year had nice spells, but often mild. It was worth the effort to learn ahead in certain classes (like Alyssea in Transfiguration) to get an advantage in sports.

Alyssea expected something flashy, something like the Fire-Making Spell or the Wind Jinx, maybe even Cracker Jinx since Raizel had been so excited to learn it in Divination. Although, Alyssea couldn't really fault either of them for the spells they'd chosen now.

Raizel picked out the Slowing Charm, effectively freezing Astra to her spot with how strong it was. Alyssea had never been under that spell before; did it feel like how people in movies run in slow motion? She expected it to be dragging, like fighting harsh winds.

Astra's spell was Alyssea's favourite to pull out for an opening; you could never go wrong with it! Raizel was now hunched over, close to tears with the way her belly tickled. At least the little snake's efforts would not be in vain; she would find it much harder to dodge but Raizel might find it equally as hard to aim.

Alyssea clapped. "Nice!"

Go easy? Wish she could but as far as she knows, duelling brings out the worst in her and it’s all because of one thing and that’s her hunger for victory. She was starved of it during her time in the duelling team, during her unofficial duels and all because of how weak she is. It drove her to the point that she would do anything to gain that victory, to show her growth, even going as far as wanting to extend the duelling time just to knock her opponent out cold. That was the only victory that she could accept.

It was… scary… so she had to get away.

But now she’s back and she must keep that urge away, that part of hers. This is, after all, a family bonding. “I’ll try.” Yes, she will try, she’ll fight herself if she must, stop herself from seeing this as a competition but rather just a fun duel practice with her cousin. She mustn't let them see that side of hers… no, what would they think? They’ll probably think she has gone mental. Raizel shook her head, stopped herself from thinking and instead, shifted her attention to the duel. Right, think of nothing but this duel.

And that’s what she did. Focus, eyes on the target, calm your mind. Raizel made a quick gesture with her wand with precision and then followed by the clear incantation. “Arresto Momentum!” Oh, that was a perfect cast, she could see that with how it had hit Astra, it’s effect taking over almost instantly. That would’ve been perfect if Astra’s Rictusempra didn’t hit her and set her into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Great. She let out a chuckle and then grinned. Whether that’s from the Rictusempre or just her feeling the adrenaline rushing and the thrill of the duel, who knows. “Let’s keep at it, shall we?”

Okay, so this was actually insane. Alyssea had to take a step back from the piste as a strong wind started blowing up the place. What was this called, again? Zach had thrown this at her during the winter duels and promptly injured her ankle. A wonderful way to start a duel, Alyssea commended. Not that Alyssea appreciated having to elevate and ice her ankle every few hours for the next week but Ravenclaw had a good strategy, that she could admit.

With the way Astra had been hit with a slowing charm the previous round of spells, it meant this spell was really going to hit. If Astra dodged it, it would be a miracle. But no, she didn't quite make it. Not by a long shot. She was thrown right off her feet as she was casting her own spell, which missed Raizel. That Spongify could've hit Raizel, though! It was pretty close, but the winds just had to mess up Astra's aim.

Raizel was no longer laughing and Astra had just been knocked over with some strong winds, but all things considered, it all looked about the same. No one had done significant amounts of damage yet to truly tip the scales. Nothing was on fire, which was always a plus. Alyssea grimaced knowing just how disoriented Astra would be feeling coming out of those spells.

Raizel could feel it, the effect of the Rictusempra weakening. She was grinning and chuckling less compared to when she was hit earlier. She can cast this spell, she was feeling confident despite that tickling sensation that was slowly disappearing. This was her chance and with her opponent slowed down, she knows she can connect this spell to her. It won’t be like last time where even a slowed down opponent could dodge her attacks.

Not this time.

“Ventus!” Was that too powerful? She can feel the gust of the wind as it shoots out of her wand after an almost perfect cast. It would’ve knocked her off of her feet too but her grip was firm and so was her stance, preventing her from getting blown back by her own spell's sheer force. She can't say the same for Astra though as that hit looked like it hurts, like a lot but the duel is just starting. The both of them are still in this game and no one is badly injured yet, the strain of continuous casting hasn’t taken its effect.

She’s actually doing good, surprisingly enough. When did she ever have a good start like this? It sure felt like forever since she actually did good in a duel. Astra is doing so well though. That Spongify, if she were just too slow to react to it by just seconds, then she would’ve been hit by it. “What luck…” she grinned nervously. Those words were more for herself as that was a lucky dodge.
