Alyss smiled as she walked along side her parents, both having taken the day off to go shopping with her. She had gotten most of the supplies by now, and was just wandering the store fronts, looking in the windows to see if she needed anything.

She knew that her parents couldn’t afford to get her many of the extra things she wanted. Although they had plenty of money for the essentials, including the school supplies, they simply couldn’t spare much on fun or pretty things that were often more expensive.

This is why Alyss continued walking past the Magical Menagerie, though sparing a longing glance at the door. She was then thoroughly surprised and delighted when her mum and dad stopped at the door when they passed and beckoned their daughter to double back.

“Mum? Dad? Why did you stop? I don’t think I need anything from here..” She paused, glancing at the list and confirmed to herself that they did not indeed need anything from here.

Her parents shared a smile before turning back to their only daughter. “We saved up for a companion for you. You can buy whichever one you like.” With that, her mum opened the door and stepped aside as Alyss walked inside, eyes shining with joy.

Upon stepping through the door, Alyss looked around, eyes wide and taking in everything they could manage. She actually ended up blocking the door, leaving her parents to chuckle and squeeze past her, exchanging words with the sweet old shopkeeper, who smelled of sweet sugar cookies.

At some point Alyss stopped simply staring at the array of animals, food, and supplies. She took a deep breath in and sent an excited grin at her parents. Nearly letting out a squeal, she threw her arms around the pair, saying “Thank you! Oh, thank you so much!” Over and over, day clearly made.

The shopkeeper guided the family over to the pets, specifically the cats after Alyss expressed her love for the felines, with a smile at the joy on the little 11 year olds face.

Alyss looked over all the cats, and then looked at the ferrets, and then the rabbits and then the cats again. It was clear she was conflicted. On one hand, cats were clever, crafty, and just a joy to be around. But ferrets were similar, but smaller, which could be a pro or con, depending on how you looked at it. Rabbits were simply adorable, though Alyss did think they all were.

At long last, Alyss decided on a feline. The one that caught her eye was an Egyptian Mau. This kitty was clearly shy, but also very curious about the girl. He continually would creep towards her, before scurrying back into the corner once he realized she had noticed his presence.

Slowly, she approached, treat in outstretched hand, hoping desperately that the feline wouldn’t be too scared and would accept the treat. He did. Slowly, he walked towards the treat cautiously, before nibbling on the treat, and licking Alyss’ hand after the tasty treat was long gone, looking for more.

Alyss giggled at the feeling of his tongue on her hand. “He’s the one, I wanna have him.” She said between giggles, adding “Please?”
