Elias didn't know what was going to be happening, until it happened. He was reading in the living room when he felt a tap on his shoulder and found both parents right in front of him.
What's up? He tilted his head quizzically. They were both acting a little strange, with his dad constantly glancing over and grinning at his mom, and his mom practically shaking with excitement.
We've got a very special surprise for you, Parker started.
For New Year's this year, Brendon continued, we're going to New York City.
Elias blinked. New York? A nod and what he could only assume was a giggle from his mother. New York, New York? His book fell to the floor, forgotten.
That was on December 21st, the first day he had been back from school. Christmas came and went with the usual celebration, just the three of them and Lance. Elias was ecstatic to see his best friend and spend some time in the familiarity of home and family.
So Christmas came and went and so did the day after, the Travers clan rushing to finish their packing in time to catch their afternoon flight up to the Big Apple. Elias kept one eye on his parents at all times, not wanting to miss an instruction or reminder before they set out.
Elias knew full well that his mysterious aunt, Paige Travers, Brendon's younger sister, lived in New York. His uncle, Tyler Travers, Brendon's older brother, had done the same for a time but his whereabouts were currently unknown. Elias had never really met either of them, despite Paige's more or less permanent location. They were going to stay at Paige's for their little vacation, which was very exciting to Elias. He wondered what she was like, if she knew sign, if he had cousins.
She was about as opposite from Brendon as one gets. Wild and pretty carefree, although she kept a neat place and seemed to be well off financially. She was blonde, and had pretty blue eyes, and was pretty tall for a girl. Taller than Parker, at least. She didn't know sign, but that was okay. She also didn't present any hidden cousins, which was also okay.
The Travers three were quite exhausted from their trip and the sudden bustle of America's largest city, and, after introductions, went straight to bed.
The following days leading up to New Year's Eve were spent out and about with the wise Paige to show and tell all that would be seen. Parker translated best she could, though Elias was tempted to use his magic quill from time to time. Paige talked super fast.
"This is one of my favorite coffeeshops, they've got hot cocoa too if Elias wants any," she rambled the morning of the 31st as the family entered a cozy looking establishment. It was moderately full, likely a little hole in the wall place. "Morning, Dianne! Anyway, if you guys want to get something go right ahead, my treat. Otherwise I'll grab my cappuccino and we can be off shortly."
Want some cocoa? Brendon signed to Elias with an inquisitive look. Elias nodded vigorously, the smell of the rich drink already hitting his nose and making his mouth water.
Orders, placed. Now the wait. Paige and Brendon chatted, still getting caught up despite having been catching up for five days now. Elias and Parker quietly signed to each other.
Are you liking it so far?
Big place. But fun and cool. Aunt Paige is a good guide.
She is a very good guide. She's going to take us to see the ball drop later. We'll be standing for a long time in the cold.
But we get to see the ball drop! I can tell Nate and Kaya about it at school!
Parker chuckled quietly. That's true! Speaking of school, how is it?
At this point, Elias had spotted someone he was sure he'd met before, or at least seen. It would've had to have been at school, since he didn't know anyone who looked like this boy at home. He faltered as he was about to sign. Strange. He waved to try to get the older boy's attention, wanting to see if it was true, or just his imagination.

One would think Cyrus didn't need coffee, but his aunt Teresa seemed to think differently. His winter break was going well even before his aunt took him to one of their favourite coffee shops. The place was bittersweet now, much like the iced caramel latte with extra sugar and oatmilk that he had in his hands. He used to come here with his Uncle Eric, before Ilvermorny and on breaks, and now...
He sighed to himself and put a smile back on his lips. He was fine! It was almost New Year's after all, which was his favourite holiday alongside Christmas and Halloween... and, of course, National Rubber Ducky Day, which was coming up on January 13th. Oh, he was so excited!
Thinking of National Rubber Ducky Day took his mind away from the sadness that still plagued him whenever he thought of his uncle, and he took a big gulp of his extra-sugary latte before glancing at his aunt, who was reading a magazine that seemed to be about home decor. Personally, Cyrus would have preferred to read a fashion magazine, but he respected his aunt's opinions.
He wore a pair of long, black cargo pants, having traded his favourite shorts for warmer clothes as it got colder. His trousers were designer, of course, but they were also likely the least flamboyant articles of clothing that he owned. There was a small duck embroidered onto one of his pockets. Under a navy blue vest, Cyrus wore a long-sleeved white shirt. He had two buttons pinned to his vest. One had a goose with a knife between his teeth. The other was a he/him pronouns pin, once again punctuated by a beautiful cartoon avian, this time a duck. He took one hand, tapped the goose one for good luck, and swished his ice around in his cup.
He glanced around almost lazily, the sugar and caffeine having not yet kicked in, and he noticed a small boy waving at him. How strange! What were the odds that he would be recognised? But... Wait. That wasn't someone from here. Cyrus pushed his hair out of his face and furrowed his brow, leaning forward until he was hovering dangerously close to his coffee.
He didn't know the boy's name, but he was pretty sure he recognised him from Ilvermorny. Then, the odds had to be that the younger boy wasn't from New York. Cyrus left his aunt to read her magazine, and he slowly walked over to the younger boy, his latte still in hand. He waved at the boy and then his parents, or at least, who he assumed were the boy's parents. 'Hi, I'm Cyrus, I think we go to the same school,' he said softly. 'Are you guys from here?'
It was probably a stupid question. He followed it up by smiling widely. 'I live in East Village! That's my aunt over there. I live with her. She's super cool.' He would point with his free hand. 'Anyway, I can help, uh, show you around, or make you comfortable. Or something. Or just get to know you.' He glanced at the boy again, his smile unwavering. 'What's your name, by the way? I'm sorry I don't remember.'

The boy waved back to Elias. So he wasn't just seeing things! And the boy had a duck pin! Elias didn't really register the other button, forgetting his manners for a moment and excitedly tugging his mother's sleeve and pointing. He goes to my school! Elias signed.
Parker's confused gaze lit with understanding. The boy started to talk to Elias and Parker. Brendon noticed this, coming up for air from Paige's chatter, and stepped up to join his wife. The man was tall, more than six feet tall and close to six and a half, making his wife and son look like garden gnomes by comparison (jokes aside, he's tall and they're short). But Cyrus was only about four inches shorter than Brendon Travers, give or take.
"Bren, this is Cyrus. He goes to Elias' school," Parker explained.
"Nice to meet you," the gentle giant said in a friendly voice as a similarly friendly smile made an appearance. "No, we're not from around here," Brendon continued after Cyrus asked his question, now noticing his accent a little bit. "Taking a little New Year's vacation. I take it you're from around here?" Elias, meanwhile, watched Parker's translation.
Back to Brendon, who was now joined by a coffee-laden Paige. "Oh, hello," the New Yorker said to her fellow New Yorker. "Cool! I live in Kips Bay currently. This is my brother and his family," the woman rattled off, handing Elias his hot cocoa. Elias blew on it softly, looking up at Cyrus with wide brown eyes.
The adults chattered a moment, leaving the poor boy without a translation before Parker signed He offered to show us around a bit. How about you and me go while Dad and Aunt Paige go do their thing?
Sounds great! Elias responded. Parker turned to relay the information, and Elias was able to read Cyrus' lips.
He fumbled with his satchel for a moment, careful to keep his cocoa intact, and wrote I'm Elias and showed it to the boy. A pause, then he cradled his notebook once more. I'm deaf. My mom can translate for me if you're not fluent in ASL. A bright smile decorated his face as he showed the notebook again, excited to have met someone from Ilvermorny outside of school, and a fellow duck enthusiast no less!

Cyrus was pleased to see that he hadn't offended anyone. In fact, the family seemed relatively okay with seeing him, which made the boy's smile widen. He watched as a man came closer to them, and he assumed the man was part of the family ─ someone called Bren? The man stood quite a bit taller than him ─ for a moment, Cyrus worried that the man would be like the very intimidating boy at last summer's Spin the Bottle game, and he bit back a gulp.
Thankfully, 'Bren' turned out to be very kind. Cyrus listened intently as the man explained that he and his family weren't from New York but were visiting for the holiday, and he nodded. 'It's nice to meet you too! And yeah, East Village is, ah...' He paused and thought, but his directional confusion was kindly interrupted by a fellow local arriving. The excitable boy waved enthusiastically, his fingers blurring in front of him. 'Hi! Yeah, East Village isn't too far from Kips Bay.' He could do directions sometimes.
He watched as the woman handed a drink to the boy who had waved earlier. It smelled wonderful, like everything else in this shop, and it was also warm ─ a smart choice, given the chilly weather that was characteristic of New York in winter.
He noticed the boy's mother moving her hands, and he squinted while tilting his head to the side. The gestures definitely had meaning. Cyrus was beginning to puzzle out that maybe she was using sign language when she told him that she and her son were more than willing to walk around with him.
Cyrus chuckled and slipped his free hand in his pocket while sloshing his ice around in his cup. 'I might not be the best tour guide, but I'll certainly do my best!' He gave a small mock-salute and then paused when the boy showed him his notebook. Elias.
He watched as the boy wrote some more, and then he read the words. Oh! That made a lot of sense. Cyrus wished he knew how to say more than Yes, Thank you or Help in ASL. He glanced at Elias, and then the boy's mother, before signing an awkward, likely not-perfect Thank you to display his gratitude for Elias's introduction. His awkwardness began to fade away when he noticed Elias's smile. The blond-haired Thunderbird returned the grin, and he glanced at Elias's mother once again. 'I'm going to go double-check that it's okay with my aunt, but I think she'll be fine with it. She might want to come with us. Maybe while I'm showing you guys around, you could teach me a little bit of ASL? I don't know very much, and I'd like to try to communicate a little bit better.'
He would scurry over to his aunt and ask if he could go show Elias and his family around. She raised an eyebrow at him before sighing and giving him a side-hug, telling him to be safe and not to talk their ears off, but ultimately giving her allowance.
Cyrus headed back to Elias's family with an even bigger smile on his face. 'She said yes! Also, Elias ─' He glanced at Elias and then his mother, and then back to Elias again. '─ if you have any questions about upper years at school, feel free to ask! I'm in my sixth year, so I've done a lot of classes.' He paused. 'Is there anywhere you would like to go first?'

The kind eyes of the eleven year old would show his appreciation of Cyrus' sign abundantly. As the older boy went to check with his aunt, as Elias learned from Parker, the boy signed This is exciting. Parker laughed and nodded.
When Cyrus gave the a-ok, Elias shook his hands in the so-called "deaf clap" before remembering he had cocoa and resorting to an awkward regular clap by tapping his hands on his wrist. He glanced between his mother and new friend as she translated his statement. Now it was Cyrus' turn to recieve a 'thank you.'
"Well, we're not familiar with the area at all. Eli really enjoys nature, but honestly I think anything that isn't a concert would delight him right now. He's just so excited to be here," Parker would communicate to Cyrus. "So anything you feel would be a good stop is perfect for us."
The cocoa was sweet and rich, as any good cocoa should be, and hot enough to make his tongue tingle after his sip. He had a tiny foam moustache, which he tried to look at cross-eyed for a couple seconds before giving up and taking another drink. Paying no heed to his mother's conversation, he again took his pen in hand and began writing. I think your duck is super cool. I like ducks a lot. He pressed the notebook towards Cyrus and pointed with one slender finger toward the older boy's duck pin.

Watching Elias's gaze light up made Cyrus know that, even though his very poor sign language was surely horrible, trying it had still been the right choice for him to make. The corners of his ocean-blue eyes would crinkle, wrinkling softly at the edges, as he, too, smiled at Elias's thank you.
He listened to Elias's mother explain that she and Elias weren't very familiar with the area, and he nodded. 'There will be no concerts on my tour!' he announced.
His entire being would nearly emanate the light of a thousand suns when Elias wrote about liking his duck? His pin? Cyrus's free hand began to wave excitedly, and a grin split his lips. Thank you, he signed emphatically, saying the words out loud for good measure, although they probably sounded more like, 'Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!'
Once he got over the initial surprise of someone else liking ducks, he said, 'Ducks are my favourite animal. I used to go bird-watching a lot in some of the parks around here, and my favourite ducks to see were Mandarin ducks! I think there was an internet meme about one in Central Park a few years ago, actually. That was cool. But they're really regal, and also really colourful, so I just really vibe with them.'
While he was talking, he slowly led the way out of the café. 'I hope I'll give you guys a decent showing of the area. However, I've been at school a lot... I still know my way around, I think, just, things are different now?' A slight raising of his tone at the end of his sentence would emphasise the question in his words. He glanced around, his brow furrowing slightly as they began to walk. 'Oh, that's a really old church. It's been around for, uh... a couple hundred years? Something like that.' Cyrus had always been more interested in science, mathematics and art than history. Some things did not stick in his brain quite as well as formulas and concepts. The age of the church was one of them.
He glanced at Elias and Parker thoughtfully. 'If I'm honest, I think this entire street is pretty old. I don't know the exact number. But, uh, that's kind of cool, that we have that here.'
If Parker and Elias followed, he would keep walking, his gaze catching on a tree in the very small green area across the street. 'Oh! When I was little, one of my friends got stuck in that tree! That was fun.' It was a Cyrus tour, anyway. It could be personalised. 'I live, uh, way down this street, by the way' he added. 'I was thinking we could walk a really big rectangle to get back where we started? Obviously it's not going to be a tour of the whole city – we'd need weeks to do that – but it'll be a tour of the area I know best, which might be a bit more rewarding with me as your tour guide.'
He offered both of them a huge smile. 'Where do you guys live? You said you weren't from around here, but is that upstate or somewhere farther away? What's it like there?'
The sugar from his drink was beginning to kick in, it seemed.
