Great Hall, 15th November

The sounds and smells of the Great Hall during mealtimes were one of the things Noa-Elise liked about Hogwarts. It might be because she can finally breathe after a sudden slew of homework and classes. She was so confident about managing her classes, social life, and... extra-curricular activities that she underestimated how wildly different being tutored at home from being in an actual school where every assignment and practical course matters.

She slumped at the very end of the Slytherin table, quite far from the hubbub of her classmates so she could take a moment and lose her composure. She realized that it was a Wednesday and that meant;

Astronomy class

The very thought chilled her to the bone. She was absolutely pants in that class and that simple information alone irked her. While she knows that she was not the brightest first year, she thought that she had a pretty good grasp of her subjects (especially Charms and DADA) but the Slytherin girl found herself actually struggling in a class she deemed unimportant.

Grabbing a goblet of iced pumpkin juice and a steaming meat pie; Noa-Elise felt rather ravenous and critical of her academic capabilities. Normally, her tutors would teach her lessons at her own pace, no doubt making her compliant with her habit of doing almost everything except the task she was required to do, especially if she didn't like it. Looks like it came back to bite her.

With a sigh, she looked up from her plate and looked by the entrance of the hall to check if her fellow housemate Lucie, and Aliana, a creative Ravenclaw whom she met earlier that week, had arrived.

Maybe they can give her some pointers with Astronomy or other subjects, hoping to Merlin that she won't get a Troll in any of her classes.

Father might be understanding and offer to help her (in true Hufflepuff fashion) but Mother... that's a very different story altogether.

Wednesday meant Astronomy. Which meant Astra got non-rule-breaking time in the tower. Which made her very happy. On top of that, she had just learned some new spells and she and Renelle seemed to be on great terms again. Everything seemed to be going well in her life.

Aside from the Roderick Issue. But we do not speak of that.

The first year Slytherin usually didn't talk much in the mornings. Sometimes she would sit with Renelle, sometimes with another one of her friends like Rodney or Mahlioz, but being alone was alright for her. Most of the time she didn't even make it to breakfast. Plating several pieces of toast and fruit pieces, the redhead sat down. Her hair had decided it would be nice and comb down in a semi-nice look for the time being, which helped lessen the impression that she had just woken up.

Her robes were slightly wrinkled, as always, but her green-tinged blue eyes were alive and awake, drinking in her surroundings like she was drinking the orange juice in her cup. Gah, she loved orange juice.

She noticed the dark-haired girl across from her looked pensive, anxious. Disquieted. Bothered, if you will. Astra didn't say anything, she knew people had their own struggles and worries. She got out her notebook, black with a star drawn in the corner, courtesy of a white paint pen. Inside, she flipped to the section she had designated for moon phases, writing "Waxing Crescent" in the box labeled "15" on the November page. In the planets section, she noted that Venus had been the only celestial body she could see when she woke up at six.

Let's see.. Polaris, Sirius, Betelgeuse, Vega, the Pleiades, all quite clear. Rigel... dim, but still visible. It had been a good morning for stargazing, even if it had meant sneaking out. Oh the things she did for her passions.

Finishing the notes up, she set the book down, face up, not remembering to close it as she started on her food. She was quite hungry, an unusual but welcome phenomenon for the mornings. If she skipped any more meals Morella would have her hide.

Lucie is very happy because this is the moment they've been waiting for, everyone is in the Great Hall which means they get to see all of their favorite people. They woke up at 6:50 in the morning today and took the time to do a Viking-inspired hairstyle, it was incredibly difficult because their hair was refusing to cooperate but it all worked out.

They were snapped out of their musing when they entered the Great Hall, almost immediately spotting their friend Noa. They skip over to their dark-haired friend attempting to sneak up on her, ”Hi Noa! Whatcha doing?” Casually smiling as if they didn't just make What and You into the same word.

They look away for a split second to see if they spot Aliana coming into the Great Hall, before looking across from Noa and seeing a red-haired girl. Deciding that she seems nice they decide to greet her.

”Morning!” Before flopping down next to Noa and putting a rather generous amount of bacon on their plate, uncaring of whoever is watching.

Unfortunately making the mistake of filling their cup with pumpkin juice and swallowing the overly-sweet abomination. They take a few moments to question their existence before eating and swallowing one of their bacon to drown out the flavor of the pumpkin juice.

”Hi Noa! Whatcha doing?”

Noa-Elise almost jumped at the sudden greeting, wondering how on earth she managed to miss Lucie, whose appearance and demeanor were definitely as noticeable as a sky full of fireworks at night. Their dyed black and white hair was tied in an intricate hairstyle that looked a bit messy yet stylish and their bag hanging on their shoulder.

They greeted a casual "Morning!" and took a seat next to her and grabbed some bacon. Taking a huge swig of the pumpkin juice, Lucie made a disgusted (and daresay, haunted) look at their drink before chewing on a piece of bacon. No doubt they weren't a fan of the sugary concoction.

Noa-Elise made a long-suffering sigh and poked at the ground beef, "Astronomy. I seriously can't tell the difference between Mars to Venus and, Merlin, the only star names I can remember are from the Black family because the tutors drilled their names into my brain. If I don't get my grades up, Professor Baird might give me Remedial classes."

The thought gave her chills. It would mean that she's not doing the best she can, or worse; she's not good enough. At. All.

Call her dramatic, but she grew up with Mother and Father's friends praising her for being a well-read young lady (and teasing Felix Lemieux that she can easily beat him) and to find out that she's below average academic-wise... It simply won't do.

Turning to her left, Noa-Elise noticed a girl around their age with red hair and an open notebook next to her. It was poor form but she took a peek at the girl's neat writing with the corner of her eye and saw it was the previous Astronomy lesson with notes she must've added for her benefit.

She really wanted to ask the redhead about, maybe, helping her out with the subject. Noa-Elise turned to Lucie and waited for her bespectacled to finish and see if they could give their opinion to her plight.

Listening to their friend enthusiastically, they feel bad for her, they also know the struggle of barely passing Astronomy because they are barely maintaining an E in that class.

”I could help you, I have an E in Astronomy. I barely avoided an A though. My late mother’s side of the family, bless her soul, are astrology maniacs. I barely avoided being named Cassiopeia.” They shiver at the memory of their maternal grandmother practically forcing a book on Astronomy down their throat.

“If I hadn't been forced to learn every damn…I mean dang fact about astronomy, I would've only known the names of the Black family as well.” Despite being haunted by hours of researching astronomy, Lucie is willing to help their friend succeed in an O in Astronomy. They momentarily take off their glasses to wipe the lenses before putting them back on.

”You know sometimes I forget that I need my glasses to see? I had the choice to get my eyesight fixed but I'm choosing to get it fixed when I’m older. But that's not the point, if you want me to, I will help you with Astronomy.”

One day their kindness will be their end but not today, they just want to help their friend not get put in remedial classes. They give their friend a lopsided smile and wait for her answer. I'm a big softie but I’m okay with it.

"Oh Lucie I could kiss you right now!"

Noa-Elise cheered, thoroughly relieved that her friend was willing to lend a hand with her lesson. Grabbing her schoolbag, she retrieved her thick roll of parchment; making sure that the ends of the scroll didn't dip on her goblet. Her notes copied the professor's words. Even down to the pause. But whenever she tried to read them back, the information just seemed to escape her.

She waited for Lucie to place their glasses on the bridge of their nose and nodded at her words, "They are kind of in the way. You have pretty eyes after all."

It's true, Lucie's blue and brown eyes would get attention everywhere they go. Noa-Elise watched other people stare at them with amazement, or with curiosity at least. At first, she too thought it was that Muggle contraption they put in their eyes to replace glasses. It made her flinch because, really, putting an object in their eyes?! Those Muggles are right mad!

"So, the professor is going to quiz us about the different kinds of moons of Mars. Thank Circe that it wasn't Saturn because I will scream if that happens" she breathed out with a groan. "And here I thought the only subject I would have difficulties with is Herbology."

Not that she minded the dirt and grit under her nails, it's the fact that she must have the blackest thumb in the entire world. Even back home the snake plant that Mother gave her as her first plant died for some reason; and that plant as known to be the easiest one to care for.

Like an auror given a mission, Noa-Elie sat up with her back poker-straight and turned to Lucie with determination flashing in her eyes. She will not accept a grade lower than an E on her report card. If she did... then she'll accept a dare or something.

As I stroll into the room, feeling relaxed and content after spending some quality time with one of my buddies, I casually plop down next to Lucie and Noa. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, and I can't help but notice that the two of them are deeply engrossed in a conversation about their astronomy class. Taking a moment to settle in, I glance down at my plate, which holds only a few tantalizing strips of bacon. While my meal may be modest, my curiosity is piqued by the animated discussion happening beside me. Lucie and Noa, both known for their passion for the cosmos, seem to be delving into the depths of their astronomical knowledge. . As I take a bite of my bacon, I listen in on their conversation. They're discussing the latest lecture on the formation of stars and galaxies, and I can't help but feel a little lost. I've never been much of a science person, but I'm intrigued by their passion for the subject.
I start listening more intently. “That all sounds sooo cool!” I say very excited to Now and Lucie. “Do you have Astronomy next noa?” I ask curiously wondering why she randomly brought up astronomy.

If my book is open, your mouth should be closed.

There was... A lot. Much noise. Many happenings. And Astra was not social this morning, no no. As soon as the whirlwind of a person apparently known as "Lucie" came over their energy just kind of overwhelmed the redhead, who was enjoying the relative peace.

Though points in the conversation stood out, Astra was not enticed by the energy, despite Astronomy being her favorite subject. She did notice the dark-haired one, Noa, looking at her logbook. Astra made no move to hide or flaunt it, simply left it as it was.

She found it funny, first, that Lucie was almost named Cassiopeia, as she figured Lucie and Cassi would get along rather well. Second, that her dad and aunts were all named after celestial beings as well. Astra (now Aces), Seren, ans Hyperion.

Roderick had just barely escaped becoming Mercurius James Norrick. Morella outright refused the name, however, already having been dealt what she viewed a cruel hand growing up among muggle children with her Poe-inspired name. She didn't want Rick (or Merc, as he could have been) to suffer the same. Astra wasn't a terribly out of place name. But you-

Oh, do shut up. While most days she was able to forget most of the less-than-good things at primary, sometimes she went too deep and accidentally dug one up.

As Noa and Lucie discussed their struggles in Astronomy. She took a deep breath and waited for a quiet moment. "Ah, hello," she said when the opportune time came. "I couldn't help but notice you might struggle with Astronomy?" Her tone was genuine, not judgement. "Perhaps you'd like to compare notes after a lecture sometime?"

"Do you have Astronomy next, Noa?
Noa-Elise turned to the side and saw Aliana, the Ravenclaw with copper hair and pale skin, sitting across them. Like Lucie, she also has a plate of bacon which she is eagerly tucking in, Next to her was a girl with dyed red hair who is reading some book while eating at the same time, clearly minding her own business.

Noa-Elise shook her head at Aliana's question, "No, midnight as usual. I'm having trouble with memorizing things in that class but when it comes to Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts class, I can repeat the wand movements and incantations just by watching the professors the first time they did it."

She had the overwhelming urge to scratch her head until the information sank into her brain. It made her nervous, even the Hufflepuff that stared blankly next to her during a rare joint class managed to answer the professor's question correctly. Truth be told, she had been doing alright with practical exercises and demonstrations. The only time she mucked up was during Flying lessons when the broom nearly whacked her nose right off when she commanded it with a sharp "Up!" and the professor sympathetically corrected her that one must talk to the broom with a firm yet gentle tone.

Not to say that successfully calling the broom to her hand was a big accomplishment, when she could barely fly off the ground, her bottom embarrassingly forcing her to slide from right to left. It was a Gryffindor boy who finally took pity on her and helped her sit properly on the broomstick, but not before teasingly asking her if she was trying to clean the broom with her robes.

From her other side, she heard someone take a deep breath and a gentle voice came-

"Ah, hello. I couldn't help but notice you might struggle with Astronomy?" asked the redhead whom she had been looking at earlier, "Perhaps you'd like to compare notes after a lecture sometime?"

Noa-Elise mentally praised Circe and Merlin in dulcet tones. Regaining her composure, she put on her best grin and nodded at her kind housemate, "Oh yes please!"

"I'm Noa-Elise Forsythe. You can call me Noa" she introduced herself, sticking out her hand as an offer of friendship.

Juliana: Example
Thoughts: Example

Feeling exhausted as never before, Juliana could with all certainty say that the draining homework for Defense Against the Dark Arts could be finally addressed as accomplished. Her head rested in the palm of her right hand, she snoozed every now and then, before the hubbub of the Great Hall brought her back to reality. What if I just stood up and left? Would anyone notice?

In attempt to stay awake, Juliana extended her hand and reached out for any piece of food that was the closest to her. Half-awake and barely crouched under the table, she cursed herself for staying up so late. The DADA homework is finally done, but at what cost. She almost inaudibly jeered to herself. It only cost me a good sleep, plus now people will mistake me for a walking zombie. Great.

Surprisingly, despite such a poor focus, Juliana still couldn't help but overhear a conversation of a group of Slytherins that sat right behind her. With her back pointing towards them, she slowly grasped a goblet filled to the rim with a pumpkin juice and slowly felt the frigid sensation transfering from the metal object to her boilingly hot palm. Juliana lightheadedly sipped from the goblet while listening to the conversation. Astronomy. Oh no. I still haven't finished the homework. With a heavy and loud sigh that got attention of few fellow Ravenclaws, she covered her eyes with her left hand, slowly returning the goblet on the table.

Unconsciously, Juliana slowly bent her torso and with a loud thud that resonated through the Great Hall, she leaned her forehead onto the wooden table. And I thought this morning couldn't get any worse. Lucky me.
