Practice Makes Perfect

Nate was nervous, as always, as he walked down to the training pitch. He had been saving for over a year to get a good broomstick and couldn't wait to try it. But what if he broke it? It cost so much money to buy - how much would it cost to repair?
Instead of giving into his worries (which he usually did) Nate looked down at the broom. Ever since he'd started playing sports, he'd been more free, more confident, happier. It had started with soccer, but now, now his dream was to become a professional Keeper in Quidditch.
Nate climbed on to the broom. It was much more stable than the school ones. It wasn't the latest model - he definitely couldn't afford that - but it was a decent model. A Nimbus 2000.
Nate kicked off and began to fly, feeling his fears and worries disappear. He was in his element, soaring around the pitch. He grinned. Let's se how fast this broom can go.
He shot from one end of the pitch to the other, the wind whipping his brown hair in all directions. It was cold, but the cold was welcome. It made him feel alive. He slowed down slightly, then sped up, shooting across the pitch, then slaloming between the goal hoops. He was even so daring as to take one hand off the broom. Then the other. He had an idea.
Nate came close to the ground and stopped - hovering stationary. He sincerely doubted he'd be able to pull this off, even if he practiced all afternoon, but he wanted to try.
Nate, still holding on, placed one foot on the broom, then the other, then let go...
And promptly fell flat on his face.

Kaya was happy to be first string seeker. She really loved Quidditch, so whenever she wasn't busy with anything else, she was going to train. This day as well. She prepared herself, took her broom and went to the pitch. While she was coming, she heard like someone was already there. Well, that couldn't be bad, right? Surely enough she didn't care about it much. Coming to the place she found someone who she was sure wasn't in first spring. At least not yet. Boy looked same year as she was and Kaya thought she could see him before in common room. Hi there. Are you okay? It looks painful to lay like that. Kaya Rose couldn't look at the boy without wanting to laugh. But she wasn't toxic and she did care if he was okay, so she just looked slightly worried while asking and approaching boy. I don't think I saw you here before though I'm coming here almost every day. Do you want to be in Quidditch? Or you were just training to fly? She smiled and offered her hand to a guy. If he needed, he could take it to make himself stand up. Was it painful to fall from broom? Though he didn't fall from high enough luckily. Kaya liked some extreme but she'd never choose to do anything that could harm her or anyone else. |

Nate lay on the floor for a moment, contemplating the choices that had led up to this moment. Did he regret this? No. Would he do it again? Yes. Did face planting on the grass hurt? Of course. Still, it was worth it for that one moment he was in the air, standing with two feet on the broom, even if it had only been a moment.
He looked up at the sound of a voice. A girl was standing in front of him, offering her hand. He took it and stood up, brushing soil off of his clothes before addressing her. He couldn't quite rember her question - something about Quidditch. Although he didn't know what was said, he could guess.
"I just got appointed as the second string keeper on the Quidditch team, although I haven't yet played in a match. I want to be a professional keeper someday. Although you're probably wondering why I was lying face first on the floor.
I was trying to stand up on my broom - impossible I know, but it would be so cool to be able to fly like that - no hands. I've also been practising starfish and stick, but I wanted to try this. I doubt I'll ever be able to do it, but it's fun to try. What about you? Why are you here? Are you on the team?"

Kaya looked again at the guy. Now she realized she didn't ask his name and so didn't introduce herself either. Kaya Rose Bennett, second year Thunderbird. I am on team as first string seeker and I'm coming here often to train. What's your name? She wondered for a while about what he said he tried to do with broom. Surely it was quite naive to try it alone with no one helping if something happens. But was there a way to balance so could manage it a little? Or with another person's help? It sounded like an awesome adventure and now she was sad Amber wasn't here. Your idea is quite hard and dangerous, there's no way it will be good if you want to fly up or down, and quite problematic with speeding. But, I like this idea. Maybe if you really want to try it, though without really flying, one could try to hold another one so that one doesn't fall from broom? Kaya looked at the guy again. Maybe she had to go for Amber to ask if she'd like to help? But Kaya didn't want to go now, so maybe they could do it just both of them. Anyway it sounded like much more interesting adventure than having three people. Though this would definitely require trust. A lot of trust from both of them. |

"I'm Nate - Nate Hawthorn."
Nate though about how best to practice it. He could definately use an extra pair of hands. Maybe Kaya could help him get onto the broom, as that was the main thing that he'd been failing at. Once he got on, with a bit of speed he could probably stay on. He thought it would probably be like riding a bike - if you're stationary it's easy to fall, but once you get moving it's much easier to stay balanced.
"I think the best thing would be for you to help me get on to the broom - once I am on and moving I think it might be a little easier to balance. You know, maybe if this actually works we could swap and you could try - it would probably be quite a useful skill for catching the snitch. What do you think?"
Nate looked at her nervously. He hoped that she'd take up on his offer - it could be really fun and he might finally make a friend. He was nervous though - what if she thought his idea stupid or strange?

You know, it sounds awesome. However, try to start with not too fast speed and without going high, so if you fall from broom, you don't get yourself too injured as I never tried to catch people from broom before, so I might not be there in time. Kaya smiled. She was up to his idea, but she didn't want anything to happen with him. So it would be more wise to take it more safely at first. Kaya looked at his broom, looked at hers and thought about it for a while. Okay, let's do it. Once you will be on broom, I'll get on mine and be not far from you. I hope you don't fall, but otherwise it will be great practice in catching. Maybe in future I would be able to catch my teammate instead of just watching them fall... Kaya remembered summer games. They won their opponents but she had to watch some on her team fall from the broom. Sport is quite dangerous for health but it didn't make her less interested in it. Kaya simply enjoyed the feeling during the game a bit too much. So, what are you going to do when you are on broom? Nate. His name was nice but he looked like he was nervous. Kaya wondered if this time will turn to be fun or not. But she would see it soon. |

"I'll try it at a slower speed and then speed up if I need to. Thank you for the advice."
He probably sounded a bit blunt - he wasn't used to talking to others much. He hoped it wouldn't offend her. He was a lot less confident on the ground - when he was on his broom he didn't have to worry about anything. Honestly, he wished he was already on his broom.
"I haven't had a match yet - I hope nobody falls in mine."
Nate mentally recapped the plan.
"So I'm going to stand on the broom with you helping me keep my balance. Then, I'm going to make the broom move and hopefully not fall off - as if I'm skateboarding using the broomshaft as a board. If I can do that and not fall off, I'll consider it a success and maybe I can teach you! If I fall and get too hurt I will abandon he idea completely, but I'd like to give it a few tries first. Are you ok with this plan?"

Kaya smiled looking now at the broom and Nate. How would it work? This was most likely the most exciting time for her and she actually already wished they could start. It would be great to try it too if he could succeed, but this could wait. I can't wait to start. This was her only answer, but this simple word was carrying so many feelings behind it. She wanted to start. Kaya was extremely intrigued if he could do it, how it will look. The most interesting, how did it feel to use broom in such way? These were all the main questions and feelings Kaya could feel now. I actually really hope you'll succeed. I want to try it too then. But I still hope you won't injure yourself. I have nothing with me to help your injury if you get any. In this simple but direct sentence Kaya expressed her feelings she tried to not think about. This would be way too bad if Nate got injured and she sincerely hoped he wouldn't. So she'll do her best to keep him and herself safe. At least as much as she could. She stood up near broom, ready to help Nate. So, are you ready to start? |
