Nikolai bounces from foot to foot with pent up energy as he takes his place at the starting line. Despite his misgivings about having to visit Hogwarts again for the umpteenth time in a single year, he was actually excited for the day. This was to be his first official match after all. And while he couldn't claim to know much about this American team, he'd be damned if Koldovstoretz didn't win.

Grinning through the introductions, Nikolai scampers onto his broom and palms his wand in eager anticipation. The young Russian takes one last furtive glance at the rest of the racers before focusing forward once more, squinting against the harsh sunlight. This would be fun.

This was Athena’s first broom race. She didn’t think she would be part of the broom race, an actual player. She had experience back home, however it was just their old slow broom. Her parents had bought her a new one, which she hasn’t used yet, a Swiftstick. She was nervous, no doubt in that. This was her first race after all. What if she got hurt? What if she lost? What if she actually got lost? She tried to erase these from her mind. The speaker welcomed her opponents, before introducing the Ilvermony team. “Athena Addison!” The speaker had said. As she got ready to take off, she was still nervous. She tied back her brown hair and got ready to start. She looked at the other racers, they all looked so ready, except maybe a few. She hoped this race would turn out well, but she hoped that they would win.

Another day, another broom race. Drew was enjoying his summer camp time, and always looked forward to the times he could broom race in the summers against other schools. Though broom racing wasn't the most popular sport, as it was greatly overshadowed by Quidditch, it was still a fairly big event when schools competed. With his newest broom, the Nimbus 2001, in his hands, Drew walked towards the start line. It was deathly hot outside, but the race must go on. Seeing his teammates as they arrived, he gave each of them a wave. Drew knew he could win, but even if he didn't, he was determined to have some fun. He needed this.

He mounted his broom, ready for the start of the race.

Roksana was really looking forward to the broom race today, to be honest. It was what she'd been anticipating since before she had come to summer camp, and she was feeling both very excited, and nervous. But, she'd be totally fine. Roksana, not wanting to lose her glasses, put them away in her pocket, praying that they wouldn't fall out while she was on the broom.

She and some of the rest of the Koldovstoretz broom racing team were going against Ilvermorny, the American school. Roksana took a deep breath and got onto her broom, getting ready to take off.

XXXThis whole thing, coming to Hogwarts summer after summer to compete with other schools that paid him no mind, was starting to lose its novelty. Not that Fedya found much enjoyment in it in the first place—his mind was solely focused on the win and getting back home where he felt safe and protected.

Beggars couldn’t be choosers.

As he stepped into the arena, broom clutched squarely in his hand, Fedya observed the area he had come to know so well. An area he hadn’t hoped to know, but one thrust upon him regardless.

Another day, another race.

Perfectionist 1 - Year 1

Stephen has always excelled at the things he is most interested in doing, and from a very young age, he has had grand dreams. He has been obsessed since the age of four with the desire to be an astronaut. The idea of being part of an extraordinarily elite few who may one day be rocketed into space to colonize Mars was the epitome of his grandest dreams. And from a young age, mentored and guided by his best friend's astronaut father, Stephen had learned to control impulses and focus his energies where he felt they would do him the most good in order to achieve his dreams.

He spent endless hours practicing advanced mathematical problems and honing his skills on the basketball court. He was early for practice and generally last to leave. He always looked for opportunities to expand his knowledge and then apply it. When he learned about the combustion engine and how it worked, he could not rest until he had taken his mother's engine apart and put it all back together. He was a doer. He was a thinker. He was an adventurer. And because he realized the dangers of what his dreams could ultimately lead to, Stephen endeavored to obliterate every variable, under his control, that would lead to anything less than a perfect outcome. A mistake, even a small one, could lead to death, and that was just unacceptable.

When he felt like his world had been tossed upside down and his dreams had been tossed aside as if they were nothing, he was initially angry and resentful when entering Ilvermorny. He did not want to be a wizard. He wanted to be an astronaut. Then he got to Ilvermorny and his resentment did not leave for a few months, but he could not help developing interests in Transfiguration, Astronomy, and Broom Racing. He had to admit, there was nothing like the thrill of zipping and zooming through the air at fantastic speeds and dizzying heights on a broom. Recognizing this may be as close to being an astronaut he may ever get, Stephen threw himself into his studies and practices. It was all paying off as his grades were consistently nothing but 'O's.

He had even heard of something called Apparating which made him wonder if that could ever be possible to places beyond the bounds of this big blue marble. All research on the subject had led him to a definitive 'no', but Stephen believed no breakthroughs could ever be made and progress in everything, even magic, could be stalled and stagnate without visionaries. Until he learned differently, his goal was to see such a possibility become reality, and he would endeavor to prepare both his body and his mind in the pursuit of answers and practical advancements on this, and many other subjects.

Evasive Maneuvers - Year 2

Stephen had always been a naturally gifted athlete, but he did not rest on his natural abilities alone. He worked hard at perfecting them and honing them. He was a star forward on his basketball team back in Moraga, California before attending Ilvermorny for this past year as a first year wizard. He was also tall for his age. That helped in basketball for sure, but as a broom racer, it presented a certain set of new problems.

He was 5’2” when he entered Ilvermorny, but he had continued to grow, as one would suspect a healthy, strapping young teenage boy to do. He was now 5’4”, and still taller than most of his classmates, but he was not lanky or clumsy looking. He wore his height proportionately well. Exercise kept his body pumped full of endorphins and his mind clear and able to focus on the things most important to him. He had developed a rather specific workout routine that was both arduous and fun. At least to Stephen it was fun. In addition to his daily cross country running regimen and his broom flying practices and drills, not to mention the occasional pick up games of basketball that he would join in on if he could spare the time from his studies, he also lifted weights. By any set of metrics used, Stephen was in phenomenal shape. His reflexes were quick, sharp, and on point.

He had noticed just the slightest bit of sluggishness in dodging abilities after returning back to school from winter break, however. He at first attributed it to the fact that his routine had slacked off just a bit while on vacation, but even after getting back into it hard for a month after the start of the second term, he was still noting it, especially up on his broom. His center of gravity was everything when flying, and he was finding it just a little more uncomfortable on his broom. As he was a boy with an engineer mindset, he put quite a lot time and energy into diagnosing the problem for the onset of his broom issues. What he finally determined was that his height may be an issue and though he was in excellent shape, perhaps he could be a little more nimble. This is when he added Pilates to his regimen. He wanted to stretch and elongate his muscles while strengthening his core. Flexibility was the key to his problem, he was certain.

It stood to reason that were he to become a more lithe broom racer, his sluggishness would dissipate. This would allow him to hug his broom even more closely and, he suspected, improve his ability and quick timing to dodge and change course if necessary while not fearing that his strength would fail him or that his center of gravity would shift without warning when a fast maneuver needed to be made. It took a little bit of time to get used to it, but Stephen found it had paid off nice dividends on his timing when flying. The issues he had noticed when coming back from winter break seemed to no longer be an issue for him, and for that, he was most pleased. (WC: 538)

Perfectionist II - Year 3

Perfection, he had heard many times over, was an impossible state of being. Though loathe to admit it, he believed that to be mostly true at a basic level. People were people and therefore fallible - even him. Real world situations were always complicated and dynamic, any one of which had myriad outcomes possible dependent upon a seemingly endless number of variables. Some situations allowed for more leeway, for more forgiveness, so to speak, to reach an acceptable outcome. The saying, "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades," would speak to that very point. But by what metric would one find perfection in the game, or series of games, of horseshoes, for example? He supposed it may be possible to throw nothing but ringers in a single game, maybe even in two or more, but could it be done in every single game one was to play? Highly doubtful.

So what came to Stephen's mind was what would the new metric for perfection be when perfection itself was not truly possible? A slate of wins, comprised of less than perfect scores, but scores still good enough to beat a competitor? Maybe that was getting closer to a reasonable, working theory of perfection. Less "X" marks the spot and more of a here is the acceptable range.

When Stephen approached anything, he did it with the mindset to always hit the mark. "X" really did mark the spot for him. The idea of ranging out perfection was something he felt happened, and was acceptable, when learning a new skill, but the goal was to always hit the nail on the head. He was a strong believer that practice made perfect, so he devoted all spare time to perfecting the things he did. Not working to perfect everything, of course, because he also believed in living a healthy happy life. So when failing to attain a perfect result, he never beat himself up. It simply spurred him on to work harder.

And he did work hard.

He practiced especially hard, daily, on his flying skills and Broom Racing maneuvers. He was diligent about his physical workouts to keep his mind and body sharp, but it was his studies where his efforts were directed more than anywhere else. He was a student who thrived on getting into the weeds in his magic classes. The "how" to cast a spell or transfigure an object was not enough for his brain. The "why" was equally important, maybe moreso. The more he understood about anything, and all of its complexities, the more he was able to apply his knowledge for optimum results. He was still the kid who always asked for more homework. It was just who he was and what he did.

Perfection was not simply a single result, borne from hours, or sometimes years, of repetitive practice, and it certainly wasn't a natural state of being. He had come to believe it was a state of mind so he had disciplined his mind and trained his body to achieve "his" highest state of perfection when it came to casting, potioneering, transfiguring, and flying.

The reality was that he was a wizard. He saw no path from graduating Ilvermorny and getting an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, so all his efforts had been turned and directed to being the best wizard he could be. But seeing no pathway did not mean closely held dreams faded away. It just propelled him onward to control variables in his current reality in the hope that there might still be, well, hope.

It was finally here. The summer event he had most been looking forward to; the Broom Race. He found it ironic that Ilvermorny was once again facing off against Koldovstoretz. Ilvermorny had taken quite a thrashing at their hands last summer and he hoped it wouldn't be a repeat performance, for either side. Still, even though it hadn't ended as he'd hoped it would, it was still a very fond memory for him. Maybe this one would be even better.

As he walked out with his team, the cheering crowds brought an instant smile to his face. He knew broom racing hadn't quite yet matched the popularity of Quidditch, but the crowds seemed to be even bigger than they'd been last year, and that race actually took place in London's Professional Quidditch stadium, which had definitely not been filled for the broom racing. A brief thought passed through his mind as to whether EmmaLee was sitting somewhere in that crowd, and then he forced it from his mind. Now definitely wasn't the time for distractions.

Keep your focus, Schwartz.

As he did before every game, he acknowledged his opponents with a smiling nod and wishes for good luck and safe flying. Then he turned his attention to his team. It was a good team and he was always happy to fly with them. Younger than their opponents overall, but they had trained hard. He high-fived them all and wished them a fun, hard fought match.

"Fly hard. Fly fast. Fly smart. And try to have some fun along the way. We can absolutely win this!"

August 8th, 2023

What a year it had been for Irina, a fairly boring year at that. Her main focus had been on her classes, her potions, and the broom racing team. Irina was still heartbroken by the loss of so many of her friends on that trip to Hogwarts, but a new year brought new excited young talent to Koldovstoretz. She’d spent the year focusing on herself to move past all that had happened. It worked to a very small extent, Irina still held a large grudge against Hogwarts, but wouldn’t place it upon every single student now. Therefore, for yet another occasion, Irina found herself returning to Hogwarts.

Today was an international broom race and Irina was feeling excited. While she wasn’t going against Hogwarts, her team was completely comprised of Koldovstoretz students unlike the year before. Irina had been training with this group for the whole year and knew that they could achieve another win. Walking out onto the field, Irina took a second to bask in the sun before preparing herself for a phenomenal race. Mounting her broom and finding the right headspace, Irina knew. It was time to race.

Nate stood at the starting line, his gaze wandering to the right and then to the left. He nodded to his team, his gaze lingering a moment longer on Irina. She was the only one he gave a small smile to. The two had a time when they were best friends, no doubt. But a lot had happened and they both had a lot to do, and there came a time when they had little contact with each other. Still, he would always count her among his friends and she had a place in his heart.

The next moment his eyes fell on the opposing team and his fighter's heart began to beat. Nate was competitive, it came from his years of boxing. When he did something, he gave it his all and he wanted to win with his team. Of course, having fun came next, but it was clear to him that he would give his best today as well.

The big Russian waited for the last seconds before the starting signal would sound and both teams would fly for the victory.
