BACKGROUND:

Mari grew up in London like most other muggle children. She went to elementary school, played games with her friends, learned piano and guitar, a fairly normal life for her first 11 years. From a young age Mari was always a joy to be around. Making jokes and playing around with everyone but was always very respectful as her mother, Sumin, and her side of the family taught her to be. She learned some of their Korean traditions and they were mixed with the traditions of her father's family. Mari and her younger brother Jae grew up with the stories their father William told them about the magical world and Hogwarts school. While she loved them she never fully believed it until she experienced her first instance of magic when she was 8. Her younger brother had taken her favorite teddy bear from her causing her to become angry and upset. She made the bear fly through the air straight into her arms. After that instance her father explained more about her new found magic and how she was going to have to not use it until she was old enough to study at Hogwarts. For the next few years she continuously asked her father questions about everything magic and Hogwarts related. What kind of magical creatures were there? Can you use magic without a wand? What kind of courses did they teach at Hogwarts? She couldn't get enough, always wanting to learn more. When she finally received her owl inviting her to Hogwarts, she was beyond excited but at the same time was sad to leave her friends and family. For those outside of her parents, younger brother and her father's side of the family, she told them she would be studying at a boarding school in Scotland that her father had studied at. She knew she would miss everyone so she made sure she took with her photos of her family, friends and the family dog Oreo. Heading off to Hogwarts alone was a big adventure for her, one she was anxious and excited about as she would get to learn all these new amazing things and maybe even decide what she would like to do in the future for a career.

WILLIAM HUGHES RELATIONSHIP : Good as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : William, or Will, is a pure blood wizard. He was born in 1987 and was 24 y/o when Mari was born. He was a Gryffindor at Hogwarts after which he did a lot of travelling around the muggle and wizard worlds before meeting Mari's mom Sumin when he was 21. He fell so in love with her that against his parent's wishes married her. He settled down in London with her and became a magizoologist.
SUMIN (KANG) HUGHES RELATIONSHIP : Good as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : Sumin Kang was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1988 where she had a fairly average upbringing. Her parents owned a cafe/bakery that did well enough to support them and after she graduated high school she went on to become a nurse. Sumin and Will met at her parent's cafe while she was on a break and came to visit and he was there eating. When the two fell in love her parents were very supportive of her decision to move to London with him.
JAE HUGHES RELATIONSHIP : Good as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : Jae is the younger brother of Mari. He is 3 years younger than Mari and just had his first instance of magic before she left for Hogwarts. The two of them get along as well as any siblings do. They tease each other and fight but ultimately still care about the other. Jae plays some sports and is excited for when he gets to go to Hogwarts to try out for Quidditch.
SUA KANG RELATIONSHIP : Good as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : Mari's grandmother on her mother's side. She doesn't know of the magical world or anything about Mari, Jae or Will being wizards. Even still, they try to keep in close contact with her and take trips to South Korea during holidays so they all can visit her. She has taught Mari a lot about the Korean culture, from food to history and has instilled a sense of respect for others(even though Mari still likes to break a rule or two every once in a while)
LEAH HUGHES RELATIONSHIP : Good as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : Leah is Will's twin sister but the two couldn't be more different as far as their personalities. Leah was a Ravenclaw always focused on her studies at Hogwarts so that she could do the job she dreamed of, working at St. Mungos Hospital. She had a son when she was 20 and has raised him alone, with a lot of care and support from Mari's parents. She is the only family member who wasn't against Will and Sumin getting married so the three have always had a close relationship.
GARRETT HUGHES RELATIONSHIP : Okay as of her first year at Hogwarts BASICS : Fifth year Gryffindor, Garrett is Mari's older cousin on her father's side. The two used to get along well as children, playing around together but when he went to Hogwarts they got more distant. He participates in Broom Racing and is a good student at Hogwarts so Mari looks up to him in that sense of she wants to accomplish as much as him in her years at the school as well, and maybe convince him to hang out with her so they could become close again.
