Someone Like Me
Only my grandmother had joined me on Platform 9 and 3/4, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. My nannie was the biggest supporter of my magic heritage in my entire family, probably because she's a witch herself. She's the one who told me about Hogwarts and the wizard world. For the longest time I thought that I was cursed or something because no one else around me could do or see what I could. But when my grandmother finally explained things I felt so excited! Well, at least about the magic part. She also told me about how I came to be adopted, which is a rather tragic story that I never want to think about. It'd hurt anyone to find out that their parents were terrified of them and abandoned them because they thought you were a demon.
The man who handled the luggage helped me put mine on the train. He even offered to do the rest for me and I got to give my grandmother a long hug. She use to go to the school a very long time ago, she said that she was a Ravenclaw I think. She said that they had the best parties and played the best pranks on the staff. I hope I get to do that! I really just want to know how magic school works, though.
I finally let go of my grandmother. "I'll miss you so, so much, dear," cries my Nannie. I see a lone tear cross over the wrinkles on her face and I feel my face start to heat up itself. I quickly back away; I can't let anyone see me at a weak point, or they'd try to take advantage of me later on. Instead I sigh softly and smile at my grandmother.
"Now, I won't t be gone for long, I'll be back by the summer, Nana! Don't cry, you still have James. And Rowan, and the others." She gave me a knowing look and I giggled. "Fine, fine, I'll behave." She kissed me on the forehead and I waved goodbye, getting on the train just as it began to move. As the train moved I kept waving at her through the windows, running along. Some people laughed but I would miss her so much. When she disappeared from sight I went to find somewhere to sit.
There were empty seats in the back but I didn't want to be by myself. I found a compartment with one girl and I asked, "May I join you, please? I don't think that this train will fair either of us well by sitting alone."
I never lose. Either I win or I learn.

Someone Like Me
Regina halted in her steps just in front of the Hogwarts Express, her older siblings lingering behind to say goodbye to their Mother who had taken some time off work to see her children off. The household elf began loading on each one of their trunks, when he was momentarily stopped by Regina herself, his eyes curiously gazing up his young Mistress instead of voicing his question.
"Put mine in a compartment seperately from my siblings." The raven-haired girl whispered without a single glance, her expression remaining as cold and distant as usual. The house elf only mustered an obedient nod as he put her trunk in an empty compartment that he was sure it was quite far away from the other Miller children's.
"Reg, don't just stand there." One of Regina's older twin nudged her before getting on the train. 'Mum's gonna be sad if you don't at least say goodbye."
She replied with a sigh. No sooner that the words escaped his lips did Regina's Mother, Louise Miller, engulfed the youngest sibling in a tight hug with the slightest drop of tears dropping out from the corner of her eyes. Regina robotically returned the hug, although she felt a warm feeling surging inside her heart.
"Write me as soon as the ceremony's over, alright dear? Know that no matter which House you're sort in, I believe that you'll become one of the most strongest witch some day. I love you, Regina." Louise spoke with an emotional tone, so proud that her youngest daughter has grown up so fast. Regina let a genuine smile stretch across her lips, probably a rare one that no one would ever see it again anytime soon.
"Of course, Mother. Take care of yourself. And...I love you too."
Some time later, Regina found herself sitting peacfully alone in an empty compartment, her orchid hues staring at the breathtaking and picturesque landscape below the rails outside the window. It was at times like that did Regina truely knew the meaning of serenity and she felt at ease just admiring the amazing view. Suddenly, a pair of footsteps caught her attention and Regina shifted her gaze from the window to the door, where a petite girl was standing and politely asking if she could take a seat.
Normally, Regina would have downright refused to be in someone else's presence, given how much of an introvert she was, but strangely enough she felt that it would be quite rude to do so and just shrugged nonchalantly.
"Go ahead. Not like I mind."

I gave her a brief smile and sat in the seat opposite of her. At first I was quiet, tapping my fingers on my legs and staring out the window but then I got bored and looked at her. She was very pretty, especially her irises. Were they purple? They were a very beautiful purple, too, maybe orchid purple. This made me even more interested in her. I had basic facial features, mostly because I was young, but also because I came from a common Vietnamese family. Everytime I was with my adopted family on vacation, people always looked at me with a sad expression and asked me what my name was. When I gave them a non-Vietnamese name they always flinched with surprise.
In the reflection of the window I could see my narrow almond shaped eyes and my hooded eyelids. My eye are dark brown, so dark they look black, which matches my even darker colored hair. My hair is neatly braided into two french braids, out of insistence from my mum. My dad let me wear his lucky green amulet. I hope that doesn't mean I get in Slytherin. I have all my hopes into Ravenclaw, just so I can be like my Grandmother.
I smiled again. "I' m Jessica, from Bangor, Ireland. Well, I've lived in London with my grandmother for the pass year and a half, luckily. It's great to see the city. Where are you from?"

Someone Like Me
Once the petite Asian girl settled down in front of her, Regina's orchid hues stared once again outside the landscape wordlessly, letting an awkward silence fell between them. Quite frankly, she wasn't as anxious about the Sorting Ceremony as any new first-year should be; instead, Regina was certain that she might be sorted into Slytherin.
After all, the Miller family bloodline had always been of pure-blooded Slytherins.
However, the image of her kind-hearted Mother appeared inside her mind, the Mother that she loved dearly even though she hardly ever said it outloud. Louise (Barett) Miller was a proud Gryffindor, and there was no doubt that her Gryffindor blood had more of a influence on Regina than the rest of her siblings, despite her glacial, solitary and ambitious personality.
The sudden introduction coming from the other girl slightly startled the raven-haired young noble witch. Regina's expression remained unfazed, however she secretly wondered why would the Asian girl suddenly struck up a conversation with someone as brooder as herself.
"...Miller. Regina Miller. I come from London. And yes, living in the city can be pleasant, at least for the people who love being among annoying and lousy people." Regina repled courtly, her voice sounding colder than she intended, only sparing Jessica a glance before looking out the window once more. She was already withdrawn with any sort of interaction with her own family, much less with a stranger.
There was one thing that surged the curiosity inside Regina, however. This girl, she had very evident Asian traits, with her dark brown eyes that seemed almost black with her hair of a matching colour. Then why could Regina clearly see that Jessica was more of a foreign name? She certainly didn't resemble a normal native from Ireland.

I stifled a laugh. Annoying and lousy people? That's one way of describing them. This girl seemed like good friend material, but didn't seem to feel that way towards me. I wonder why she's so quiet. I'm not the most talkative but I'm pretty sure no one would consider me to be an introvert or anything. I think I'm more in between. I don't mind being by myself but when something as exciting as going to a magic school, especially riding a magic train to one, I'm surprised that she doesn't look more ecstatic!
"I take it that you don't like London very much, but I don't blame you. Sometimes I miss the quiet country sides and the view of the ocean. My parents love Ireland, but I don't really mind where I live as long as I can read my books or have fun!" I then reached into my pocket and looked at something in my hand for a quiet moment before showing it Regina. "This is my family. I've know them since I was five years old, when they first adopted me, and I love them dearly. No one treats me different, like how I hear happens to other adopted kids," I said softly with a small frown. The photo showed my father, mother, my siblings, and my grandparents. Then there was me when I was seven in the middle, standing out. They all have freckled, pale skin and deep blue eyes while I have light olive skin and dull brown eyes. It's only then when I feel sad about my family.
Just then the trolley lady reached our compartment. She offered us candy and treats. Usually parents say don't take candy from strangers but I don't think that she can harm us on government property... It is technically government property, right? My grandmother said that the magic world was run by the Ministry of Magic. I hope to go to their headquarters one day, maybe I can work there!
I got chocolate frogs, Every Flavour Jelly Beans, and some Fizzing Whizzbees. Tasting a jelly bean, I cried, "I think I got lasagna... why, that's my favorite dish!" Then I gleefully hunted for more tasty flavours, obvious of my manners at the moment.
I never lose. Either I win or I learn.

Someone Like Me
It was the first time Regina had actually ever taken interest to another person's story, and honestly, it was more...agreeable than she'd like to admit. The raven-haired witch titled her head, studying everyone of Jessica's family members' appearances. Indeed, just like the girl stated herself, she was an adoptive daughter of an Irish household. Regina vaguely wondered what happened to her brith parents, however her keen eyes caught the slightest glimspe of sorrow behind Jessica's dark brown eyes.
Regina wordlessly nodded, showing a sign that she was truely listening to what the Asian young witch said. However, she wasn't sure if she trusted Jessica enough yet to share her own story. It was exactly because of her hidden insecurities that caused her to have trust issues and needless to say, Regina wasn't quite ready to open up easily to someone she just met, even though Jessica seemed genuinely friendly.
Regina's contemplating thoughts were cut off when the trolley lady entered the compartment with a bright smile. Being born in a wizard family, she wasn't unfamiliar with anything since her older siblings already informed her in advance about a friendly woman selling all kinds of sweets on the Hogwart Express. Deciding that she might get hungry, Regina got herself a couple of Chocolate Frogs and Every Flavour Jellybeans. She tossed one into her mouth.
"...I've tasted better." She idly commented.
The noble witch took a glance at Jessica, astounded by the fact how curious and enthusiastic the girl was, eating one candy after another in bewilderment with each new flavour she took. It didn't take long until a very small, yet amused smile crept onto Regina's face at the humourous sight. Muggle-borns.
"You...seem to be thrilled and eagered. Don't you feel afraid of the things that magic could do?"
Maybe having some company might not be so bad, after all.
She must've had a tragic past.

Someone Like Me
I stopped midchew, about thirty different flavors in my mouth, and looked up with wide eyes. I think I amused her, noticing a very faint smile on her face. I laughed with my eyes, making them squint into little slits, giggling, and I covered my mouth, chewing super fast so I could speak. It was taking a while so I made a sound and held up one finger, gesturing for her to hold on. I made a face because some of the combinations of flavors was actually disgusting, to be honest, especially the mash up of mashed potatoes, blueberries, hazelnut, and pickles.
When I finished and swallowed, I made a disgusted sound and wiped my tongue with a napkin, giggling again. "Sorry, I just was never able to have candy before, my parents are strict about sweets...although my dad snuck me some chocolate every now and then." Speaking of chocolate...I eyed the casing of chocolate, studying the design and the words.
I saw the girl try some of the jelly beans and nodded. "Yeah, nothing can compare to the real thing." I bit into a chocolate frog, registering the taste. The frogs actually moved! This made me feel a little bad for eating one, but I was hungry, though I didn't want to stuff myself before the feast I heard that we'd have after the Sorting Ceremony.
I paused when she mentioned my excitement and stared at the box of chocolate frogs quietly. "Well...I barely know anyone who uses magic, actually. People tell me that my parents...didn't want me...because..." I sighed, sitting back in the seat, looking at Regina. "It's just hard for me to think about how someone out didn't want me because they though I was demon. I guess I did something magical, I don't know, and they were afraid. The lady who took care of me before I was adopted by my family said that I was abandoned and about to be traded to some 'black market', I think that's what I overheard.
I chewed on my lip and went back to eating, making sure to cover my mouth while I talked. "Anyway, the lady saved me, but I'm here now. I'm grateful, maybe something terrible would've happened, I don't know. The thing is, my current family isn't magical, except for my grandmother and her family, but they all died during some dark time in wizard history. She's the last of her family's magic line, since my dad somehow was born a squib, that person who came from magical family's but can't use magic. She's hoping that I carry on the family line and marry another wizard."
My eyes lit up. "Me? Well, I want to explore and know about everything magical and learn as much as I can. The muggle world didn't accept me, well I'll make myself know as a great person in the magic world!" I ate a couple more jelly beans. "Have you taken a good look at your books yet? What subjects are you interested in? I think Charms sounds excellent!"
I never lose. Either I win or I learn.

To say that Regina was taken aback by Jessica's words was an understatement. So this was what the Muggles and Wizards' relation had come to. Comparing wizards to bloody demons! As a pure-blooded witch, Regina only frowned in disgust, thinking about the dishonorable way Jessica was treated just because she possessed a talent that anyone should be honored to have; magical abilities.
Taking a bite on the moving chocolate frog, Regina stared solemnly out the window, noticing the landscape had completely changed since they first departed. Everything was so green, so brilliant. The sky was painted with a magnificent mixture of orange, pink and red as the blazing sun set over the horizon. It took Regina some time to respond to Jessica's excited questions with a softer tone of voice.
"Yes, indeed I have finished reading most of them. I'm looking forward to most to Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts. I want to become the most powerful witch to prove my self-worth to everyone." Her orchid eyes glanced back at her new companion, an emotion of sympathy settling inside of her for the first time. "Looks like we're not quite that different, Jessica."
Another smile, more gentle this time, even though it wasn't quite genuine. Because Regina had forgotten how to smile happily.

Someone Like Me
It was excellent to hear that there was someone else trying to be something great in this world. I noticed the look of disgust when I mentioned how my biological parents felt about me. It made me think about their heritage. Someone along the ancestry line had to have had magic blood for me to be who I am. Were they taught to not like my type? Or maybe it's something so rare in their family that I happened to have it, maybe like once every ten generations. I just glad that someone out there appreciates me, especially since my family is full of muggles to the brim.
"Yes, the Protection Against the Dark Arts and Potions sound magnificent. My grandmother said that students can't do magic outside of school, for a good reason, I suppose, so it amazes me that I will finally get to try things on my own soon. I also can't wait to see the beasts we'll be studying, really everything, actually. There's also Muggles Studies, but I think that I know enough about them already..."
I left the rest of my treats alone, suddenly very thirsty. A nice cup of whatever they had at the castle seemed fantastic right now...speaking of which...I pulled out my Wand and gazed at it. "In some stories they say that wizards don't have to use wands, they just use words and focus their energy. But a wand makes it feel more personal, I'm guessing, because you're using your own source to do magical things..." I held the wand up to my eye level and studied it closely. Then I gripped it in my hand firmly and raised. I glanced at Regina, grinning.
"Diminuendo!" I cried, pointing the wand at my package of jelly beans. I expected it to get bigger but I guess it was the wrong spell. Instead a very, very tiny package sat on the seat next to me.
I frowned and looked at Regina. "I heard my grandmother say this once while she was cooking dinner in the kitchen, but I guess it was the wrong one. That makes me wonder what she was trying to make smaller now..." I shrugged and laughed, swiveling my wand around playfully, pretending to cast spells.
I never lose. Either I win or I learn.

I never lose. Either I win or I learn.

Someone Like Me
"Maybe you should take another look at the Book Of Spells." Regina raised an eyebrow skeptically, before pulling out her own aspen wood and dragon heartstring wand, studying it closely. "Sometimes, the smallest of details can help you a lot with how to properly cast a charm."
As soon as she finished talking, Regina pointed her aspen wand at the shrunk bag of jellybeans, repeating the correct incantation over and over in her head until she felt the magic power rushing through fingers. Her hand gesturing a strange circle, she recited the Engorgement Charm effortlessly, an icy blue light shining at the tip of her wand.
"Engorgio!"
No longer than one second did the bag inflated to its normal size, a proud grin stretching across the young witch's lips. She suddenly felt eager to show off her skills, so she aimed at Jessica's trunk right ext to the said girl, reciting the Levitation Charm as though she had done it hundreds of times.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
The trunk flew up in the air, seemingly light as though it was just a fluttering feather. Regina could sense the bewilderment in the Asian's eyes, her ego being fed just a bit more. How about something more...ticklish?
"Rictusempra!" Regina raised her voice, her wand was pointing directly at her new companion.
