Sporting Informal Poll

I have an informal poll I wish to extend to the userbase regarding sports as we attempt to offer greater consistency between the sports.

In sports (quidditch and broom racing) we have a rule where if you miss (1) post while on the team, even if the team wins that game you do not get stat points. If you miss two (2) posts, you are removed from the team for inactivity.

The reason for this is to reward activity. Also, because without a post there is no action from the user, so they also did not contribute an action for a round or more. So if a team wins, it is often in spite of a user not pulling the same weight as the rest of the team.

However, there has been some debate regarding this being 'too harsh'. Life happens and sometimes people get busy, too busy to make even a 50 word post within 5 days. They feel that there should be considerations for being busy.

There are some issues with this. The first being that there is (often) a wait list of users interested in joining sports. With an extension for additional leniency, how would this effect waitlisted users who might be more active and engaged and have been left waiting? Also, how would the teammates feel if they have a user missing potentially multiple rounds before there is any consequence as this would have a direct correlation with their probability of victory. Another point to make is -- "well, if there is extenuating circumstances" which sounds good in theory but there is no way to truly verify a claim. A user can claim internet issues, testing, health issues (and some have) and there is no way to now if it is true (with rare exception).

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

I, to be honest, rather like the "no post no reward" idea, as- well- why reward someone who- as you said- doesn't contribute their own weight?

Just by remaining in a team and not doing their job, and then rewarding them? For doing nothing? Whose to stop others from doing the same. I like putting the limit on how many posts you can miss- as it does allow people on the waitlist a chance to participate- in one of our exciting sports- but keeping someone who doesn't partake in the sport only causes people to not really sign up-

well, this is from my perspective.

I agree with Clark- I do think the no post no reward system is beneficial, in both weeding out those who are not devoted to the site, and in allowing those who are waiting a chance at the team.
By not removing people from the team after two posts- or 10 days of not posting, if my math is correct, you are allowing someone who otherwise would have waited much longer for a change to play, a chance to play.
Those people on the waitlist are waiting, and want to play, and by not having those who are not super devoted to posting, a chance to play.
Again, like Clark said, this is my opinion, my thoughts, and from my perspective. I have not participated in the sports, because I know my schedule will not allow me to guarantee a post, and j do not want to let my teammates, and my house down- and I do not want to take a position away from someone who might be better for the team and for the sport.

I feel like this rule is fair and appropriate.

When we sign up for a team we are committing to spend real life time to writing our posts and we should plan accordingly.

While we all have emergencies and medical issues that arise. It is important for us to step back when we are unable to meet our commitments. It is the responsible way to represent ourselves in a community.

I would have no problem if such a thing happened with having to reapply to join the team and join the wait list and I also think that 10 days is more than enough for me to contact someone in a real emergency to let them know I need to step down.

Thank you for asking our opinions,

I just want to say that I agree to the “no post no reward” because as the community and waitlist grows, it becomes hard to wait on the waitlist while someone who isn’t as active (or active at all) is still on the team. When you joined the team you were aware that you were taking up a responsibility: the responsibility to post every 5 days. If you are not able to do the work, there is (most likely) someone else who can. Removing this or making it looser means that those players who are on the waitlist have to wait longer for someone who isn’t helping their team.

This opinion, of course, and you are allowed to agree or disagree with it.

I think the current system is ideal, especially now that it's only a 50-word post per week. A lot of people don't get to play because there isn't a spot available, and the sports systems deserve engaged players. If someone lacks the capacity to to participate at even such a basic level, they are probably not getting out of it what someone else with the enough time and energy to participate would. If we were to change the system, people in the teams who are dedicated would increasingly be harmed by team mates who don't have enough availability to do something so basic. That feels awful for people who are sweats and put a lot of effort in, and it breeds bad feelings, and would probably demotivate the team overall. Demotivating the energetic contributors because of unresponsive people they can't avoid is not good for the site. Those teams who suffer because of someone not posting might be unhappy to keep such a person on the team, whether they are willing to openly say that or not. I strongly oppose changing the system. It is already extremely lenient that almost half a month of not posting a mere 50 words could pass before removal from a TEAM activity. Anything more extreme is sure to drag the fun out of the system for people who are actually available and trying their best.

On behalf of people who are energetic and would get a lot out of having a spot on a team, but can't because the slot is filled by someone who gets very little out of it and rarely participates... let's please not make things worse.

I agree with all of the above.

If you signed up for a sport, that means you want to do it and have time in real life to do this job. You accept the responsibility and contributes to your team. In duelling your action could be 50% of your team’s action, because there’s only two people. In quidditch, everyone has a different job. I think in broom racing there is a need to work together. If you are AWL, then you should accept that you don’t get a reward.

I would say however, if emergencies to arise, real life should be prioritised. Either they tell the staff, who could use an NPC instead (I’m not sure whether is would be possible), or they accept the fact that because of what’s happening, they do not get rewarded. But I don’t get why they lie about this (faking having issues or something). I mean don’t you want to play the sport? You could always reapply.

Yes I think it is also fairer for the people on the waitlist. My waitlist time was quite short due to some people being inactive. I think that it’s better to give this opportunity to more active people. If they are active again, as I’ve said, they could reapply.

I agree that the players should be contributing to the team by posting and thus receiving rewards and I would also add that if the members have something really important RL to do, such as exams or some family issues, they should have the right to request for missing a posts, and the staff team also have the right to deny a request.... But if that happens too often, then they should be removed from the roster to let someone more active to participate.

At the same time- it's not only inactivity- it could also be people who was on the roster for a while- which could be restricting but most tend to change or step down from a sport allowing a new player to join- and I am- while this probably doesn't make as much sense at the moment since kn about to sleep soon- I also strongly oppose changing the system.

I loved duelling and if I had a partner that was not posting at all- or went inactive- I would feel like I was let down- and while their situation might be understandabld- I might not feel exactly like I once did when I agreed to do the duel with them.

That is how I'm also seeing team sports such as Quid and Broom Racing- by keeping an inactive member on the list and rewarding thrm- you're letting down the active team members- the ones who actually wrote and helped strategize.

It's only fifty words! We only have to post a quarter of the regular hio wordcount- and it's fairly fast too.

my suggestion is a separate thread for players to apply and appeal to waiver off the stat point penalty after match. decisions can be made by the sport captains/team whether or not reason is sufficient. i feel some people lose motivation once they know that they wont gain a stat point, because mindset of whats the point if there is no gain?

my experience in the past in duels. which is just like 3. im a very active rper on site but sometimes still had trouble posting on time which means wavered action. even if its 50 damned words. i would say personally, adhd executive dysfunction. its a real struggle but i wont not think it falls under `extenuating circumstances` nor do i feel most people understand - but that doesn't mean that im not trying or that i dont want to play, if you get what i mean. its kinda the reason why im now 100% rps no commitments/sports because i am aware of what im like after a few experiences.

for 2 post thing, i feel like people should just communicate after game over on wether or not the player involved really wants the position taking into consideration their personal circumstances what not. there is really no 'fair' way, because its also allows for the potential of some bias in play with this.
