Meeting a friend in the Hall - a ball date?
Why am I always running late?? Lloyd wondered, running down the corridor. Stopping at the intersection of two corridors, Lloyd ran his hand through his blond hair. Lloyd was decently tall, one of the tallest of his class, not that that mattered.
With blond hair framing his freckles face, his rich brown eyes had gold specks if the light caught it right, Lloyd knew how good he looked. Not vain about it, Lloyd did like to look out together. Especially… especially around Eloise he though, and then immediately blushed. He and Eloise had became fast friends in their first year, and now.. But if I ever ask her out she’ll probably turn me down. Even with the fall ball… I don’t want to lose my dignity. That would be embarrassing, and I don’t want to lose her as a friend
While thinking this, Lloyd was walking down the corridor. Twisting one of his silver rings around his fingers, Lloyd didn’t notice as he walked right by Eloise in the hall.
Even if she had tried to get his attention, he didn’t notice till he was at the end of the corridor and it registered that he had just passed the girl that he thought were wrapped around. Turning around, he called
“Hey Eloise! Sorry- I was caught in my own thoughts. How are you?” Blushing, his cheeks turning pink, Lloyd waited for her to reply, hoping he hadn’t offended her in any way.
why am I so bad with girls that I like? I literally live with three older sisters- you’d think I’d be fine around them!

After lunch, Eloise went up to her dormitory to collect her things for the afternoon and then down to the lower floors of the castle to spend her break with her friends. And now it was time to go back to class and, her friends being less farsighted than her, had to go and get their things.

Eloise hated being late more than anything and had therefore decided to go to class without waiting for her friends. She walked through the corridors filled with students going to their different classes. Her classroom was not very close, so Eloise sped up her pace and weaved in and out of the other students. The corridor would be clear in a few minutes but the classes would have started so she couldn't wait.
She continued to walk fast before she realised that it was still quite early and that she could slow down. Eloise looked around for familiar faces and spotted a blonde head she knew well. Lloyd Thomas. With a smile on her face, Eloise approached the boy.
Eloise and Lloyd had become friends in first year and they were almost best friends now. The boy walked on without paying any attention to Eloise who found it a little strange.
— Salut! Hey!
— Salut Eloïse! Désolé... J'étais perdu dans mes pensées. Comment ça va? Hey Eloise! Sorry- I was caught in my own thoughts. How are you?
— Ça va super et toi? Great, and you?

Stopping, turning around and going back to Eloise, Lloyd tried to get his blushing under control.
“ je suis très bien! J'ai passé un super été ! comment était ton été?”“ im really good! I had a great summer! how was your summer?”
Waiting for a response, Lloyd instantly started overthinking all of what he had just said. was that too flirty? Was it flirty at all? What if she doesn’t want to be my friend anymore? Should I ask her to go to the ball with me? No no it’s to early.. maybe just as friends..?
While this chaos was going through Lloyds head, he was pretty sure that Eloise answered.
“Désolé j'ai raté ça... qu'avez-vous dit? Pardon” “ sorry I missed that… what did you say? sorry”
Blushing an even brighter shade of pink, then red, he looked at his shoes and Fidgeted with his rings.
Looking up, Lloyd brushed his hair out of his eyes.
“avez-vous eu la chance d'aller au camp d'été? ou avez-vous envoyé l'été avec votre famille?” “ did you get a chance to go to summer camp? or did you send the summer with your family?”
Waiting for her response, Lloyd looked at Eloise- truly looked at her. Her eyes were gorgeous, her died red hair cut in a Bob framed her face, and her blond roots were peaking through. Blinking, Lloyd shook his head, trying to stop fantasizing about her.
Was she his dream girl? Yes. But we’re also best friends and I don’t want to lose that he thought, a mental battle being waged in his head.

— On va dire que c'était pas mal. Je me suis disputée avec ma cousine il y a quelques semaines mais à part ça c'était bien. We can saw that it was not bad. I had a fight with my cousin but except that it was great!
No need to talk about the duel that did not end well for Eloise. Nor the reason why Astoria was upset with her. The two friends had stopped near the wall of the corridor, so as not to obstruct the passage. Their classroom was just across the street, they would wait for the bell to ring before entering.
Even if she didn't really want to admit it to herself, Eloise was more than happy to see Lloyd again. She was quite happy to see the summer holidays finally arrive. It meant seeing Tori again, talking about everything and anything, feeling like herself again.
Eloise had wanted to send Lloyd an owl several times, but she was sure that if Tori or Henriette came across a letter, they would think that she and Lloyd were a couple, when they were just best friends.
— Désolé j'ai raté ça... Tu as dis quoi? Désolé... sorry I missed that… what did you say? sorry
Eloise looked at Lloyd, then at the corridor. No wonder he didn't hear her with all the noise! Turning around again, she held back a smile as she saw the boy change colour. He was blushing. The third year hesitated to point it out, but then decided that he was blushing because of the heat. It wasn't that hot and Eloise knew that Lloyd wasn't blushing because of the heat.
— T'inquiète, y'a beaucoup de bruit. Je disais que j'avais passé un assez bon été mais que ma cousine me fait la geule. Don't worry, there's a lot of noise. I was saying that I had a pretty good summer but my cousin is kinda pissed off at me.
— As-tu eu la chance d'aller au camp d'été? Ou passé l'été avec ta famille? avez-vous eu la chance d'aller au camp d'été? ou avez-vous envoyé l'été avec votre famille?
— Je n'appellerais pas ça une chance mais oui, j'y étais. Et j'ai passé le mois de Juillet avec ma famille. Et toi? Tu as fait quoi cet été? I wont call this a chance but yes, I went there. And I pass July with my family. What about you? What have you done this summer?

She had a fight with her cousin… at least magic wasn’t used. Or was it..? Wait… are her cousins magical too?? Ay why can I not remember? What type of friend does that make me?
Worried for his friend, Lloyd forced a smile on his face. He was sure Eloise could se through it, but still he persisted.
“Eh bien… je suis content que vous ayez passé un bel été ! Et vous êtes allé au camp d'été? Comment était-ce? Cela vous a-t-il plu? Comment c'était de passer du temps avec ta famille? " “Well… I’m glad you had a great summer! And you went to summer camp? How was that? Did you enjoy it? How was spending time with your family?”
Smiling more now, Lloyd glanced at his black dress shoes and then back at Eloise.
“ Pour le bal à Poudlard, tu vas y aller ? Est-ce que… tu pars avec quelqu'un?
” “For the ball at Hogwarts- are you going to go? Do you … are you going with anyone?”
He asked, deciding to shoot his shot. It was better for her to ask her now if she had a date, and and if she didn’t to ask her to go with him, than wait and watch someone else steal the girl of his dreams away.
Why did this happen to me..? Did I just run my friendship with her? Does she even like me back? Does anyone like me like that? Lloyd thought, wondered and worried.

— C'était... bruyant. Mais c'était bien. J'ai perdu mon duel mais ce n'est pas grave. Et oui, j'ai beaucoup apprécié passer de juillet avec ma famille. It was... noisy. But it was good. I lost my duel, but that's okay. And yes, I really enjoyed passing July with my family.
This was not entirely true. July was incredible, half in Scotland and half in the Vosges. Eloise, Astoria and Henriette had spent their days together, varying between nature and the luxury of the manors. Everything else was fake. The camp had indeed been quite noisy, but nothing unbearable. And the duel had been a disaster. So catastrophic that Eloise had thought of quitting. And from the moment Henriette had told Astoria that Eloise was seeing Muggleborns, coming to London had lost all interest.
But it was useless to talk about it. It was his problem and there was no point in worrying Lloyd about it. Eloise smiled, trying not to show that she had actually hated summer camp. It had become dull when Astoria had given her the cold shoulder, and it had become boring when she had lost her duel miserably. But that was a month ago so the fake redhead had to move on.
— Pour le bal à Poudlard, tu vas y aller ? Est-ce que… tu y va avec quelqu'un? For the ball at Hogwarts, are you going to go? Do you … are you going with anyone?
The question surprised Eloise. She hadn't really thought about it. Going to the ball would be going back to Hogwarts after a year and a half without going. Absolutely everything at Hogwarts ended in disaster. And it wasn't the rumours of the Midspring Celebration that had gone off without too much damage that would change her mind. So she didn't know. Should she go? If so, who with? It was true that before the summer camp, Astoria had proposed that the two of them go. But now, everything was different.
— Peut-être. Je verrai en fonction de qui me demandes ou si j'ai envie d'y aller avec quelqu'un en particulier. Mais pour l'instant la question du bal est en attente. Maybe. I'll see who asks me or if I want to go with someone in particular. But for the moment the question of the ball is pending.
And suddenly, something crossed Eloise's mind. Earlier, Lloyd had blushed, completely embarrassed that he had missed what she had said. And now he was asking her if she was going to the ball with anyone. It was a rather silly line of reasoning, but was Lloyd planning to ask Eloise to go to the ball with him? Inwardly, she almost wanted him to ask her.

She lost her duel… oh no … we’ll she looks ok… I’m sure she’s fine, every is fine, breath. No need to hurt anyone, she held up ok in her own
Lloyd thoughts were random and fast, as his worried side went into his protective side.
Gazing at her face, he thought how.. am I deserving to be her friend, her best friend? She’s so perfect and amazing, I have to show her how loved she is
Controlling himself, he controlled his wonky emotions, calmed down his mind and said “eh bien… Je suis content que tu ailles bien et que l'été se soit bien passé.” “well… I’m glad you’re ok, and that the summer went well.”
Smiling, or trying to when she said that she was going to wait for someone to ask her to the ball, Lloyd’s thoughts were tumultuous.should I just ask her? Or will that.. will it ruin something? I think I should do it.. maybe??
Sighing, he looked up, then down again, and blushed. Looking her in her eyes, he asked softly,
“Ça te dérangerait d'aller au bal avec moi ? Je veux dire… je t'ai toujours aimé, et c'est devenu plus qu'un simple ami, plus un coup de cœur. J'espère que cela… ne ruine pas notre amitié; nous pouvons juste être amis si ça ne te dérange pas comme ça.” “would you mind going to the ball with me? I mean… I’ve always liked you, and it’s grown to be more than just as a friend, more of a crush. I hope this… doesn’t ruin our friendship; we can just be friends if you don’t mind me like that.”

Eloïse smiled. Lloyd had looked almost panicked when she had told him about the duel she had lost. And to be honest, the boy's reaction hadn't surprised her. He always looked panicked when she told him something like that. At first it made her laugh, it felt good to be with someone she could be herself with. But now she wondered why he had that kind of reaction. Eloïse was pretty sure that Lloyd didn't just think of her as a best friend.

This confirmed what the girl had thought just before. She couldn't tell him that she only saw him as a friend. Because that's not true... The previous year, the two had grown closer, going from friends to best friends. And their friendship had evolved into something new, which Eloïse called a super friendship but which was almost love. She wasn't really sure if she was in love with Lloyd. But she had to admit that what the boy had said did something to her.
Eloïse turned slightly pink. What to do now? Kiss Lloyd? Give him a hug? Just tell him that she too liked him very much and that she would go to the ball with him happily? The girl chose the hug option. It would have been very Muggle-filmy if she had stood on her tiptoes, but she was slightly taller than the boy, so it would look weird. So Eloïse hugged Lloyd and said:
— Je sais pas ce qu'on est mais on est plus que des meilleurs potes. Et j'irai au bal avec toi avec plaisir! On en parles après? Là on a cours. I don't know what we are, but we're more than best friends. And I'll go to the ball with you with pleasure! Can we talk about this later? Now we have class.
Indeed, the teacher was coming to the front of the room and Eloïse's friends were looking at her with a delighted expression. The girl had already heard them talk about her and Lloyd as a couple and every time Eloïse hesitated between contradicting them and imagining that scenario.

As Eloise leaned over and hugged him, Lloyds mind went into overdrive.
Wow he’s hugging me!!! Should I hug back.. yes hug her back you dult!!!
Hugging her back, her words echoed around his head. More than best friends …. More than best friends … more than best friends…SHE SAID SHE WILL GO TO THE BALL WITH ME!!
Celebrating internally, she said that they should go into class and he agreed with a simple “Yes… yes we should.” totally forgetting to speak French in his shock.
Sitting at his desk, he opened his notebook and doodles around.
He took some notes, but half way though the lesson caught himself writing “Mrs. Eloise Matthews” in cursive with a heart.
Blushing, Lloyd erased that, and tried to focus.
Taking out a quill, he zoned into class, focusing for real, putting his girl and all the thoughts about her in the back of his mind.

Later, back in his dorm, Lloyd was writing a letter to his parents and sisters who were at home.Dear Mum and Dad, and sis,
I asked Eloise to go to the ball with me and she said yes! I’m so excited, would you send me an outfit for the ball please? Something like a fancy chimney sweep, the theme is fairytales. I’ll include a picture for inspiration.
I love you all so much and can’t wait to be home for Christmas! Say hello to Grandma and grandpaps for me, and tell them I miss them.
