| Mathias Pride had returned home a failure, he had to choice but to return to his keeper. His parents were displeased to say the least, but it was this maternal-paternal disappointment that meant little to a boy that hardly regarded their opinion as being something worthy of value. His parents simply lacked ambition, content to live their meager, middling lives as book keeps and soothsayers. Being the person the wealthy and the important come to with future interests as they monetize prophecy. It was embarrassing. It was pathetic. Of course Pride was a hypocrite, he dismissed his opportunity at the risk of placing Harper, one of many pawns in harms way. When in defense or elevation of the king, a pawn's sacrifice was simply an expected necessity. Yet, he was in some ways regarding a pawn as a Queen. A foolish notion that would eventually destroy him. Something his parents told him, he wondered if that was a fate that they saw or if that was an ends that they simply presumed. |
|
The threads of fate were many and he would manipulate his fate the way he saw fit. He was better than the average wizard and one day he would become a God.
It was his uncle whose wrath he truly feared, Thaddeus Athanatos. His wrath was uncanny, but for the moment abated by the distance afforded to him by these summer games. For the time being he would not be the favored one but that hardly mattered, he would be the 'best one.'
He would bring with him a heavy, locked trunk. One would have though with wizarding ingenuity he would think that a wheeled trunk would not be 'too much' but alas it was. Rather he made-do like a civilized wizard with Leviosa. His trunk would hover and bob behind him as he pulled the mahogany piece into the tent.
"Shark Tent," he would mutter out loud as he entered the enchanted tent that would be his home for the next month. "This is pretty dumb," he griped as he looked for whichever bed would afford him the greatest privacy, it was a given that Winnie would find her way into his tent. Not that he minded her smothering presence terribly but she was a lot. Besides her, there were some intended tent-mates such as his cousin Jurgen Hess, likely his younger brother Gideon Athanatos and of course Marion Davenport. One might have thought he had developed some ire towards the girl, a muggle-born who had somehow caught the late heir apparent's eye, for her meddlesome nature being that she was cursed and at some point cured and that her affliction led to the untimely death of his cousin Vladimir Athanatos. But he held no ill-will towards the sixth year, she was the sort of trouble he wanted to get to know if anything. Any blame she had for his cousin's death was ultimately an unrepaid favor towards the former Slytherin.
He would pull out some light reading -- the Psychology of Fear and the Rogerian Theory, neither an individual book but rather a collection of smaller works under singular titles.

There were idiots and then there were bastards, then there was Pride. No, not the monastic tradition of early Christianity, although there are roots in superbia. He was referring to his cousin, by blood Mathias Pride, a source of unrelenting shame and ire. Jürgen was far from perfect, he knew what his family did for a living and what that meant to the wizarding world. They were psychic prostitutes who sold their sight to the highest bidder regardless of affiliation, goal or ultimate ethic. It was easier to claim that they were the Switzerland of the wizarding world, but who was to say being 'neutral' was the 'right thing?
Mathias Pride was responsible for the death of their cousin. An unnecessary death. Not to be confused with the murder he absolutely intended to commit, the crime of parricide could be forgiven if there was reason enough he rationalized. Vladimir was a powerful legillimens, the first-born son and scion of the Athanatos line. He was an arrogant, stiff piece of cardboard but he was family and they were allied with the main house. You don't betray your master and expect to survive... and yet Pride was flourishing in spite of, no...because of his crimes. It made Hess' blood boil and anger makes a man do terrible things.
This summer he had a number of notable intentions, the first of which being the assessment of Erin Ryan, his cousin. They were from the dark, rotted part of the family. Her father a ''scientist' if you could call him that -- he studied magical creatures making him technically a magizoologist but his interest was primarily in sentient or nearly sentient magical creatures such as dementors. He was also a filthy pervert, not blessed himself with the Seer skill, he forgone his pureblood heritage and had children with a beast. Well, by Ministry classification a being, an inhuman being. The product being worst than a half-blood, a half-breed. Something he could tolerate in the world, there were fine, enjoyable people of questionable, disgusting parentage, but within his own clan... well, that was different entirely. To add insult to the already injured reputation, she was utterly mad. an embarrassment to the entire family, from her atrocious hygiene, to her violent tantrums and of course the hag-infection that threatened to turn her into a true monster that was as bad as she sometimes smelled.
He had intended to kill her, the reasoning being to prevent the transformation to a hag. It was an excusable kill, prevent the girl from becoming a dangerous, lethal monster. Yet her sixteenth came and passed, she remained a girl for the lack of a better term. Actually, a somewhat attractive one from a clinical standpoint as weird as that was. It was assumed that she had been 'saved' by the 'heroic acts' of her peers. Something that he should celebrate but oddly enough his resolve never diminished with her liberation from the hags curse. He told himself that she had to be still infected. That there was still something wrong. It helped him live with himself and his strangely growing bloodlust that he never questioned or tried to understand. Perhaps it was simply puberty or a monstrous nature that was always there, this want to kill. He had come up with one excuse after another but none really explained the change in his formerly gentle, logical nature.
Well, he was going to be sharing a tent with his dear cousin for the whole summer. Mary was also going to show up, maybe this time they could do it right.

Make yourself comfortable -- that was the invitation that she had gotten when Jürgen offered to share his tent. Well, he basically insisted, such a dear. Third to arrive, the boys were already settling in - troubled cousins, like the rest of that pureblood family. It was pathetic how they clung to their blood status like a child clings to a ragged stuffed toy in hopes that it would protect them from the darkness. In truth their egos were incredibly fragile, their capacity to survive in the very world they had the power to create was laughable.
Vladimir was nothing to manipulate, through his connections and his white knight syndrome he gave her everything, including his life. It was a shame he had died so soon, but that was the problem with playing with men -- their lives were so... ephemeral. But their will so fun to break. Jurgen was breaking beneath her, while he lacked the ambition of his younger cousin so aptly named 'Pride' he would be favored for his age, his skill as a Seer and most importantly his lack of failure. She needed a living in with the family, they were destined to take the Ministry and burn it to the ground with their avarice. In truth she had no intention of killing Vladimir, even as the curse ravaged his body, it just kept him...limited and compliant. Too busy with his own suffering to realize that she had been pulling the strings all along.
Now her sisters were dead, at the hands of an angry parent. She had been playing both sides all along, in service to the father and in betrayal of his son. It is an elementary task to manipulate some teenage boy, to disrupt their rhythm and to tether them to you be it out of obligation, necessity or circumstance. Now was the tine to reap the benefit from the the chaos she had sown.
So the devil in a pair of heels would arrive.

Mathias' residence within the 'Shark' tent was appropriate, given that was going to be surrounded by those hunting him. It was questionable, however, which was scarier; his homicidal cousin, his sadistic younger sibling, a hag disguised as a girl, or his girlfriend.
No would ever suspect the tiny redhaired half-muggle to be out for blood, but they would quickly realize that her teeth were just as sharp if they dared to get too close to Mathias.
Apparently, Pride's parents had forgotten a rule in chess. Promotion or 'Queening'. It was one that many overlooked until they happened to glance down at their chess board and realize a puny pawn had managed to cross over to the other side. That the weakest piece had entered a metamorphosis and transformed into the game's strongest piece; a Queen.
To be underestimated was truly a super power.
Dressed in a pink mini dress sporting puff sleeves, she had no problem lugging a large trunk into the tent, having signed up for it as soon as she saw Mathias' name. She didn't care that she would have to be around that weirdo, Jurgen, or Matt's creepy kid brother. All that mattered was that she was going to be with Matt this summer and no one would stand in the way-- Wait a minute, was that redhaired girl prettier than she was?!
Now was not the time to stare at the pretty lady entering the tent and question your sexuality. It was time for Matt. "Oh, sorry... Excuse me." She quickly pardoned herself, dragging her trunk into the tent before ditching it to hunt down-- erm, find her boyfriend.
"MATTIE!" It was easy to find him curled up with a good book. As cute and peaceful as he looked, she didn't hesitate to rush towards him, her red curls bouncing behind her as she all but skipped over to the boy and crawled into the chair with him, like a damn lap dog, to pull him into a tight embrace and start showering his face with kisses.
"I missed--" MUAH, a kiss to his cheek, "--you--" MUAH, a kiss to the other one, "--so--" MUAH, a kiss to his forehead, "--much!" MUAH, she went in for the kill for a kiss on his lips.
May Merlin have mercy on Matt's soul this summer.

It was so unfair. Vlad dies so everything has to change -- a new school, a new language, no forks! How he suffered just because someone died. Giddy was the true victim in all of this. But at least he was able to come back to London for the summer games, eat some regular food and speak a language he remembered the words for. Yes, Japan really sucked and it was all Matt's fault. At least that was what his cousin claimed when he came to his father those months ago to claim that there was a cure and that he believed that Mathias had purposefully suppressed this information for the sake of ensuring Vladimir's death.
Father was irate, it would b a lie to say that he had seen the patriarch this angry before. Yet he expected it to go worse than it had. It was a bloody shame really, his decision to take the death of his elder sibling so passively. Only, he would later learn he was hardly passive at all. Hell can be creative and those hags certainly suffered. It should serve as a lesson to father to not bother with inhumans in the future. Still, he wanted to see something done to Pride, not due to any angst he felt over his brother's death, he hardly knew Vladimir. Still he felt there was a loss, but the loss was not the loss of a brother or even a future resource but rather a lost opportunity for an experience. He did not get to see how it ended.
It was without resentment he entered this tent for the summertime season.
When strawberry shortcake entered the tent lugging a trunk bigger than him he let out an audible sigh. This Viking woman was his brother's "girlfriend", he really went all out on the muggle aesthetic didn't he with this one. While he feared that she might start doing squats in the middle of the tent as a sign of feral dominance she instead assailed Mathias with a smothering array of kisses. "Ewww... gross.."

| Mathias was folding his unmentionables while keeping an eye on the entrance of the tent. He would see enemy and ally alike in those that entered, the bonds of blood were powerful as well as dangerous. He knew that his cousin resented him for what he did, or rather what he let happen to Vladimir. He was not directly responsible for his cousin's death, he just had knowledge in his possession that would have prevented his painfully, protracted death had he shared it or given his cousin the opportunity to share what Hogwarts had learned. But he did not and by all technicalities he had no obligation to. | ==================![]() |
He was not expecting Marion, Vladimir's old friend. He had expected them to start dating, she fit the criteria - dumb as hell, pretty as heck and muggle-born. It made for a good show and a nice picture. He should have felt a twinge of guilt even, even in the absence of romance there was a friendship that Vlad was willing to die for. It was simply mad. Honestly, if anything he felt a sense of gratitude towards her for granting him this opportunity. If it was not for her, that Ravenclaw would have it all, utterly uncontested. Not he could be the 'good one.'
With Hess unpacking, Mathias could not stifle a comment. "You know my cousin likes you," he claimed loud enough to needle Hess. Was there any proof, no. But she had a nice face and maybe if he was lucky he would get a two-fer and she would get Hess killed also. If anything it would delay whatever vengeance his cousin had planned for a short time.
Then Winnie would breech the safety of the tent. He had half-expected her to see his name and sign up. She was never summoned but she found him, it was probably one of the more unfortunate superpower one could develop. It did not take long for her to find him, it was only a tent. He was positioned in such a way that he could see who entered the tent and grant them the false sense of mind that they were somehow between him and the exit. He had found a wide, low, rounded wicker chair with a large cushion to protect his precious but utterly flat ass. He had a book, the usual psychological tomes. He was content enough, but then a human-Labrador would hurl itself onto his lap. She was probably heavier than him in spite of the fact that he probably had close to a foot on her. A knee to his delicate parts caused a wince and a yelp as his b0ok was cast aside and she went in for the attack.
"I missed--" MUAH, a kiss to his cheek, "--you--" MUAH, a kiss to the other one, "--so--" MUAH, a kiss to his forehead, "--much!" MUAH, she went in for the kill for a kiss on his lips.
He tried to say something, it was mostly a smothered noise broken up by muttered half-words until he momentarily broke free and took a fresh breath of strawberry scented air. "Woman!" He tried to peck back but she was pretty fast and too busy making sure he knew she was there, thankfully she had no tail otherwise there would likely be no novelty knick-knacks left in the tent. "I misse--" Take a breath of air when you can man.
Eventually she would calm down.
"Hey, hi?" Coated in a thin film of probably strawberry lip gloss, this was hour one of summer camp.

Another summer, another camp. If it were held in Hogwarts, everyone could bet on it that she wouldn’t come. But it was not. London Quidditch Stadium, that was what the place was called and admittedly, she had never visited it before. Why did she end up here? She didn’t know. For some reason, it was quite a chore to not include herself in Hogwarts events even though she knew nothing would go smoothly. Not once did she ever attend something in this wizarding world where she came back with a good memory only. Most of the time the bad overpowered it. Maybe Nicholas was one of her motivations, she had a boyfriend now, surprise! One month not seeing his pretty face was a torture on its own.
Upon arrival, the sight of two redheads, one with her lip puckered whilst the other was being smooched, tainted her innocent eyes. She blinked once, twice, hoping this was only a fever dream, unfortunately no, all was real. “You” Aurora glared at the boy. A nightmare has just begun. Not only would she have to survive the entire month living in a tent alongside the couple who in her prediction will never stop kissing each other, the tent decoration was…something else. Two things that she feared were both here, the ocean and shark, and she had to sleep in it, in an ocean tent with shark paintings all over. What could be worse than that? This would be the worst summer of all time, even worse than before.
She looked around, hoping to see a familiar face except Winnie because God knew she would spend the entire summer with the prince charming, her knight and shining armour. If only Nicholas were here, things would be much better. There was a girl, who looked older, and pretty like a model. Where was she? A fashion week backstage? Then another boy with blond hair. He was to feel gross from seeing the kiss attack from Winnie. But that was not it. The world seemed to despise her so much, it rubbed salt on her cuts. That guy with moppy hair. Same glasses, same figure. It was him. Jeremy or something. “And YOU!?” Her eyes widened, mouth slightly agape, the urge to slap him back and forth was higher than the empire state. But she had a new title, a prefect, meaning she should know better than attack another student because of personal animosity. First the lovebird, now a guy who pushed her down the hill was in the tent. They had to sleep side by side for a month straight inside this hideous tent with these strangers. For all she knew, he would definitely murder her in her sleep. He had no reason not to. Without shifting her eyes from that four eyed guy, she said, “Winnie, should I be worried?” She wished she could go back home.

Doo doo doo....?
Despite his summer going quite well so far, George was having the worst summer ever. At home, it was family trouble. At Hogwarts, it was Jake trouble. He didn't have a brother he could trust anywhere in Britain at this point - save, of course, for Jack Warren. It was a shame that Jack had chosen to shack up with a bunch of complete strangers. He suspected that it was a decision that Jack had not given any consideration whatsoever. If George knew his friend well, and he did, Winnie had simply included Jack on the guest list and Jack went along with it. He was good like that. George was glad to be able to tag along with the more headstrong badger. While a long list of unfamiliar names was a scary sight, every new experience was an opportunity - or even an adventure, with Jack around.
George let out a dissatisfied grumble when he entered and found that neither Jack nor Meenauh was present. Making friends was easier when one had friends with them already. They served as a sort of letter of recommendation, proof that you were decent enough for someone to like you. Alone, George would have to stand on his own merits. He had very few of those at this point in his teenager-hood.
A quick glance down at himself filled the boy with regret. While he had accumulated a fine wardrobe of wizard clothes, robes were not exactly easy summer wear. At least he wasn't sweating in his breezy shorts and old, oversized t-shirt. He crossed his fingers and prayed that someone here would be selling some more summer-appropriate Quidditch fan-gear, so that he did not need to choose between muggy or Muggly.
Of course, one of the girls he didn't recognize was wearing heels, at a summer camp. And worse still, she was pulling them off. Why were some people pretty without even trying? George gave her a sour look without realizing. He averted his eyes, instead finding Winnie pouncing upon poor Matthias. A snorted laugh heralded his arrival to those who had not seen him. The older Puff looked over and down to the grossed-out Gideon.
"I don't get all the fuss about girls either," he said. He did seem quite interested in Aurora, however. Her hair - it was cool. It was blue and pink, intertwined in a glorious neon waterfall. She seemed to be in distress, as well, so George offered a little lifeline to distract her from... whatever was wrong. Maybe she also hated kissing. "Your hair looks amazing - is that dyed or transfigured?"
Maybe sharing a tent with a bunch of random strangers, one creepy person he knew, and his best friend was not a recipe for an easy summer. But at the very least, it would make for an interesting one. Unpleasantness was always less severe if it was interesting.
"I'm George, by the way. I don't think I've met any of you." He said, after an awkward beat of just standing there and dropping his trunk onto the floor. He paused to point at Winnie, who he was clearly quite excited to meet. "Heard of you, though! Winnie, the legend!"

How did she end up like this?
Always serious, punctual, keeping it safe, especially after everything that caused her homeschooling. It must be the thing when you start feeling cold and you wish to test if you're still really alive. Since she returned, the coldness filled her pretty often. The connections faded away; her conversations shrank to casual line drops here and there. Even with Xailah — the girl was older and most probably more girly than her. Whatever was on her mind, it must have been boys already, or the boy, of course. She had hard times finding her during the schooldays, but she knew friendship didn't fade away that easily. So it was her — Meenauh. Gradually building up the loneliness of a child that missed some time. Maybe it was the same thing that was happening to everyone, especially Professors — people at Hogwarts were forgetting things faster than they should have been. Maybe they all were slowly forgetting Meenauh. But Meenauh forgot no one.
The leap of faith happened this time as well — she randomly signed up to a tent. Shark it was. If destiny would choose to bring Xailah there as well, it would be a greatest gift (she still didn't show up and what was surprising, or actually not, — Meenauh didn't know whether Xailah would show up at the summer camp at all).
She slowly floated closer to the tent to read the names. She didn't know whether the list contained the names of whoever was already inside, or just signed up. Catching her own name on the list clarified it, so she took some time to read the whole list. With her eyes widened to the size of two moons.
"Oh, hello, partner," she turned around, "It seems we're going to share the same tent! And you won't believe what the company is waiting inside."

She stopped and almost cast Scourgify on her own eyes. That was quite a company. Some names were unknown, some were too much known. There were rumours that one (or two) of the dwellers were actually hags, but, while Meenauh's trust in the school's administration was shaken just a little, she still was pretty sure that no adult would allow a hag on the same ground with the children. Interaction with: Everyone!
Mentioned explicitly: @Jürgen Hess and @Meenauh Silmataurea
If there were schemes and plots to take place in Galton's summer home, it would not be by the quickly aging teen. No, there was no one closer to a pawn in the whole tent. It wasn't that Galton viewed himself as a pawn - he certainty didn't - it was that his head was predominantly preoccupied with a limited range of topics. Mainly, it came down to food, candy and dueling. Other things tended to fly right over his head, like many of the spells that were often cast at him in his duels. No matter how much the boy tried to change, to mature, he found his own mind railroading him back into the comfort of those familiar topics.
Which brings us to his current trot through the London Quidditch Stadium. The soon to be fifth year was walking through the camp grounds making his way to his lodging. He had, of course, stopped at a concession stand on the way in and picked up a small treat. Some sweet dish made of dough, powdered sugar and syrup. Galton hadn't cared about what it was called, only that it looked delicious. Besides the sticky, sugary mess that adorned his face he also wore a linen summer robe and carried his enchanted satchel. Toad also toddled on somewhere behind him, more interested in playing with various bugs or weeds than keeping close to her barber friend. With the current heat Galton was quite glad he'd opted for the summer robe. It was a pale red color made of a light linen fabric, which, combined with the fact that it ended right above the boys knees, kept it quite light and breathable. If Galton hadn't been a wizard, and he wasn't surrounded by the magical, his robe would probably resemble more of a dress.
But he was surrounded by magic, and lot's of it. And no one was a better indication of that than who he found in front of his tent. Meenauh Silmataurea, his truly magical dueling partner was a welcome surprise. As she greeted him he would shove the rest of his snack into his mouth and do his best to choke it down asap. "H-" He choked on the last bit of dough right as he started to greet Meenauh back. "Hi! Oooooh that sounds like it's going to be fun."
He gave his robes a quick pat down to clean some of the sugar from them to prepare for his grand enterance. While it succeeded in removing the white powder, it had left some syrup. A nice surprise for anyone on the receiving end of a hug. Meenauh would luckily escape one of them this time. He shifted his satchel's strap to hang off his shoulder rather than cross body. Galton was ready to be rid of the thing.
He gave a large smile to his dueling partner. "I am dying to see what awaits us inside. Let's go!" He exclaimed, giving a nod for her to follow him in.
As his eyes adjusted to the darker inside of the tent his eyes focused onto one person. Jürgen Hess. One of his best friends. Galton probably shouldn't consider him a friend anymore, an account of the attempted murder of Erin and stab wound he'd given Galton, but time heals all wounds right? And, Galton could hardly remember the event. He knew they'd saved Erin, but the details about Hess' betrayal were clouded. Many of the things in Galton's mind were clouded. Had they not been, he may have been more concerned about the fact that he was sharing a tent with the younger brother of the teen that had given him his candy crown. But with a little dose of dissociative amnesia and an incredible amount of Hogwarts food (I mean, incredible), all those pesky bad memories stayed away.
"JÜGEN!" The boy would yell and drop his satchel. Jürgen was going to be the first recipient of his sticky hug today. He'd rush forward and practically leap at the boy. "Meenauh said I wouldn't believe who we had in this tent. She was right! How dandy, a whole summer together." He would let the boy go from his clutches after a second or two. Only then would he scan the room and see an assortment of faces. Many he recognized from their sports-based fame around the school (even if it was from a broom sport). He hoped his own fame (because of course he was famous) would have him known by most if not all, but just in case he would add his introduction to the room. "I'm Galton Lansdale, if you didn't know. And that's my mighty dueling partner!" He'd point over to Meenauh, leaving the rest for her to fill in.
