Argus and Melanie were childhood sweethearts - which isn't very rare when you live in such a small community and there aren't many other people your age. Despite going to Hogwarts together, they stick together and ended up marrying after they graduated. Argus is a Halfblood while Melanie is Muggleborn, but there was never any doubt by their families that they would end up together.

It was three years after they married that Amber came along. Of course, they had planned to have a bigger family but Melanie's pregnancy with Amber was pretty hard going and in the end, they decided to just have their own perfect daughter. If it was in the cards for them to have more, it would happen. Amber herself decided to come while the couple were on holiday in Wales! Two weeks early but a bundle of joy.

Amber loved growing up on the farm in Twatt, on the Orkney Islands. They mostly had sheep but they kept a few cows, ducks and goats as well. Their community was small, semi-magical but very loving. She thinks back fondly on her childhood and doesn't think she was missing out on anything by not growing up on the mainland or being from a big city. It instilled in her a love of nature and an appreciation for the outdoors.

There was never any doubt that Amber would go to Hogwarts like her parents but they didn't pressure her to be sorted into one of their houses - Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. If she was sorted elsewhere, that was okay too. They also told her that if the hat wanted to put her into Slytherin, since the house didn't have a good reputation, there was nothing wrong with that either. She could forge her own path regardless, so she shouldn't worry about it.

Sadly, she didn't have many friends (human) growing up, and spent most of her time with her parents, her grandparents or one of their many animals. But hey, she can mimic their sounds pretty good - enough to fool any old farmer. Which is always fun to do on a summer's day.

First Instance of Magic:

Amber thinks her first instance of magic was quiet funny. She was five years old and her ma and da had just told her that sheep couldn't be rainbow coloured. Of course, to young Amber, this was silly. Why couldn't they? Why hadn't someone come up with a way to colour them so? After all, it would save a lot of time with dying wool before making clothes!

She argued, not in a bad way but in a child's way, back and forth with her da (he couldn't stop laughing at how serious she looked!) about it all morning over breakfast. She had dreamed of a multitude of rainbow coloured sheep in their fields! So, in her young mind, that meant it had to be true and possible.

To the surprise of her ma and da, it was!

They quickly realised that young Amber had shown her magic for the first time! They were overjoyed and hugged their precious daughter close. Even if she had been a squib, they would have loved her regardless but it's always nice to know your child has magic. Even if every parent thinks their child is the most magical.

Amber didn't realise what a big deal it was until she got her Hogwarts letter many years later. She had forgotten all about the rainbow sheep until her parents presented her with a gift for leaving home for the first time - a plushie sheep that was rainbow!
