𝕽egina was not the least disappointed that Ostara had ended. She was just itching to leave the manor after suffering an intense interrogation and subtle warnings from her parents after what Rebecca had done during that day. She had no intention of letting that one slide, of course, especially when her detestable sister had decided to meddle with her private life now. She was going to have to keep her guard up every single moment.Hogwarts Express, 24th April 2022. In the morning.
Interacting with @Draven Mirador

Boarding the Hogwarts Express after saying goodbye to her Mother whom had come to see the Miller children off, Regina immediately separated from her older siblings without another word and began the search for a quiet compartment. Every other ones seemed to be full of loud and chattering students and she didn't want to be within a ten mile radius of them. Even though her social life might have improved a bit, what with her starting to have a few selected good friends, Regina still wished to avoid interacting if possible. It was a trait that would never change no matter how many good connections she gained.
The ravenette entered the very last compartment where it was, surprisingly, void of presence. It was perfect. This way she could rest and perhaps read a bit until the train arrived at Hogwarts, just herself and the calming tranquility of solitude. Regina set down her trunk along with Athena's cage, reaching a hand through the bars to caress the great white owl's feathery white head before taking a seat and letting out a small sigh as the engine finally roared to life.
Regina had believed that she would be alone for the rest of the ride, but apparently Merlin had decided not to give her some peace after all. Because her attention was snapped away from the book she was reading the moment the compartment door slid open and a familiar face appeared. Though her face was blank, there was no hiding the deadpan stare in Regina's violet eyes as she acknowledged the presence of Draven Mirador.
Oh bloody hell no.

| ─── | Draven Mirador had lost weight. The fine outlines of his bones were showing up just barely under his expensive suit, the sleeves loose around his forearms and the waist baggier than it should have been. He'd only noticed it that morning - the first time he'd changed out of his night clothes in a week. Still, he hadn't been able to force down a single bite of food before he'd headed off to the train. Even the thought of drinking water turned his stomach.
Somehow, he'd gotten in the train late. Closed his eyes for a few seconds while waiting, the murmuring of people in the train station lulling him into a slow slumber. The next moment, there was no one left in the station, and the train caller was about to close the final door. He'd booked it. Enchanted satchel tucked under one arm, Deimos held gingerly in between cupped hands, least the momentum would blow his friend clean off. Still, by the time he'd made it in the familiar plush train hallways, all the compartments had been filled. His head was spinning, gaze having glazed over and turning the train hallway into a black and red mush. If someone had clocked him right than and there, Dray might have thanked them. Deimos crawled up his shoulder, poking his cheek with a furry leg and chirping. They exchanged a look. "I know, I know." he mumbled, fishing a handkerchief from out his pocket and wiping his brow. Deimos slid down his coat, straightening his tie as Draven fixed the cufflinks and his jewelry. "Where would I be without you?" Deimos gave him a knowing spidery smile. "You're kind of rude, Mr. Mirador." he laughed at the spider, pulling open his breast pocket and allowing the spider to crawl inside. Deimos gave a pleased chirp. Picking up his bag, Dray begun to walk down the hall. All the compartments were filled to the brim with students piled on top one another, chattering loudly. Every few doors, a scream or a shriek of laughter would erupt. Along with the noise, color begun to return back to Draven's cheeks. Deimos was busy purring like a motor in his pocket, having tuned himself with the beating of Draven's heart. It wasn't long before he found a mostly empty compartment. A single shadowy figure was visible through the frosted glass, a book held in hand and head bent low. Draven sketched a smile, fingers digging in the grooves on the door and sliding it open. "Good morning," he said politely, slipping inside. It took a split second to register who was the shadowy figure. His smile flickered before beaming. "You are marginally better than sitting with Stevenson."He set his bag on the bench opposite to Regina, and sat. |

The young Heiress could felt a nerve in her eye twitch at what was no doubt an off-handed compliment. Her already gloomy mood soured even more as she watched Draven sat down in front of her, Athena letting out a curious hoot from her cage. She must be evaluating the boy because of her human's attitude, Regina thought. Athena was naturally attuned to her emotions like that.
"Wonderful," The raven-haired witch drawled in response to Draven's remark. "I am sure you will find my company most welcoming."
The sarcasm dripped heavily from her words as she assessed the Slytherin first-year up and down. He seemed to fair a bit worse than the last time she saw him. He was noticeably a lot skinnier than she remembered. Though, it was none of Regina's business of course. She didn't like it when other people assume things about her in the privacy of their minds, so whatever had happened with Draven was no skin off her back. Regina barely knew the guy and it had been about two months at most. They weren't friends and they didn't see eye to eye.
It didn't stop her from being curious even though it was better not to act on it. Regina wasn't the sort to pry into anybody else's private matters. But that didn't mean she couldn't banter a little bit with him. Anything to get rid of the brooding she'd been previously drowning herself in.
"Might I say your hair is looking lovely today, Mirador. The hag next door must be an excellent hairdresser, she is."

| ─── | Draven raised an eyebrow in Regina's direction, a barely concealed smirk tugging at his lips. "Why thank you Ms. Miller. You must excuse me, I don't keep up with makeup trends. If 'Haggard Raccoon' is in right now, your look is the name of the game."
If it had been anyone else sitting across from him, Draven perhaps would have gotten up and kissed her hand, offered an encouraging smile. But this was Regina Miller, and he would have sooner set her on fire than handed her the salt over the dinner table. Her, or her piano. He'd yet to decide, for Regina rarely crossed his mind. Or so he would say, if he was asked. The thought of her flying through sheet music a few months before, face shadowed by flickering candleflames and eyes glazed over with thought hadn't left him. The picture of elegance and grace, skill crackling at her fingertips, dancing over the keys like a companion. Music was a language and Regina spoke it fluently. She'd looked truly remarkable then. A creature of another universe, returning home for a brief moment while the notes swayed her. Jealousy had been bubbling on a low heat somewhere between Draven's ribs ever since. A book was produced from inside his coat and flipped open, with its owner tenaciously ignoring his companion. It was a game of will, really. Which one of them could go longer without speaking, who could entertain themselves the longest, after a week spent at the mercy of their parents. Who'd crack first, unable to take the silence that left thoughts gnaw at the edges of their mind? Draven grinned, his eyes flitting to where Regina was sitting straight backed beside her owl. Deimos had stretched out in his pocket, leisurely spreading his legs over Draven's suit like a particularly hairy boutonnière |

Her fingers itch for her wand. They flinched once, twice - almost unnoticeable if one wasn't keen enough to spot it.
It would be so easy to let the familiar wood slide into her palm and hex the Slytherin prat into oblivion.
All at once, the memories of what had just occurred not a week ago came crashing down like violent tidal waves, and Regina forced her hand to remain still. Control. She needed to control her emotions. Push them down, bury them away - until only cold apathy remained. The lessons she'd learnt as a toddler to a pre-teen engrained hauntingly in her mind.
"Witty," She whispered under her breath, jaw clenching and eyes flashing. "Cannot be any better than how you are fairing right now."
Whether Draven would care enough to respond to that or not, clearly he'd made his point of not indulging in the disparaging banter anymore by taking out a book and pointedly pretending Regina didn't exist. Which was completely fine with the girl in question, honestly - she'd rather return to her own reading before his unwanted entrance than humouring him any further. Athena had gone back to preening her feathers, and would let out a little croon here and there as a tense silence reigned between Regina and Draven. The girl had no intention of being teared from her book again, and she'd miss the fleeting glance of the grey-eyed boy as the words gradually faded away against her will and the dread began to settle in.
Regina still couldn't believe her parents had actually found a new way to keep her tightly chained. They knew using Kim - Kiki, her innocent childhood playmate - would be incredibly effective in driving her away from seeing any...potential future suitors they didn't like. Only because Regina had gone to the Blossom Ball with Faye, her only Muggleborn friend. And that was perhaps the root of the problem - as long as her family remained traditionalists, she would never be able to choose her own companion. (The thought of coming back to the Manor again during the summer after this made her want to tear her hair out.)
The Gryffindor was abruptly pulled out of her ghastly musings as Athena gave a rather aggressive flap of her wings. Regina's previously grim expression evaporated instantly as she turned to her dearest pet, hand reaching out automatically and slithering through the bars to caress Athena's head.
"Settle down, Athena," She chastised softly. Her orchid eyes were incredibly affectionate and even sorrowful as she gave the owl a gentle scratch on the nape. It was a side no one else would ever witness her directing toward any other human. "I will let you out once we are in Hogwarts. At least you should be let out of your cage..."
Unlike me, she didn't say.

| ─── | They were still for a long time, the four of them. Draven pointedly ignored Regina speaking, stretching out over the bench in the train, his bag functioning as a makeshift pillow, whatever remained of the morning light shining through the window and onto the pages of his book. It was the easiest form of escapism, although the words blurred before his eyes after a few minutes. Sleep was tugging painfully at the boy's lids, demanding he allow the darkness creeping at the edges of his vision to envelop him. He didn't. Couldn't, really. Not with Regina watching him from the other side of the room with those unnerving purple eyes of hers.
She wanted him to ask. It was obvious. And he took pleasure in remaining blissfully silent, watching light as it danced across his book. Deimos had started purring at one point, curling up in the hallow of Draven's throat, his feet tiptapping against the paper, as if he could read along with his owner. Draven had read this book so many times, he could recite it from memory. Entire passages had been seared into his mind, words floating before his eyes and forming an entire world only Draven could see. The books cover had been nearly torn off, old lettering barely legible across the worn, yellowed pages. Two snakes swallowing each other's tails were staring at Regine, blinking as intelligently as a 7 year old illustration could. "I take it winter break didn't agree with you, Ms. Miller?" Draven demanded rather sardonically, fishing a bag of crickets from his pocket and offering one to Deimos. From across the room, Regina's owl gave him a sad look. He extended the bag in Regina's direction wordlessly. |
