INPC: IZIL IZRI.
Image

Name: Izîl Izri

School: Uagadou

Year: Third

Status: Pureblood

Appearance: Izîl is a slender, quick girl. Her face is heart shaped and her nose and lips are thin. It is her eyes that draw you to her, though, for they are dark and her gaze is deep and penetrating. She keeps her dark hair long and often tied back out of the way. Izîl also wears three tattoos on her face, two small symbols on each cheekbone and one above the bridge of her nose. She might give you an annoyed look if you inquire too deeply too soon. The practice of tattooing girls with ink and needles is ancient in Berber culture and tattoos are sometimes referred to as ouchem which means a marking or jedwel which are protective symbols. Izîl wears the ghemaza between her eyebrows, but not the siyâla which is worn on the chin. Not many young women wear ouchem any more, particularly among the non-magiques. Izîl received hers when she was eleven. In times past, Berber women would continue to tattoo themselves all over their bodies with complex designs. Izîl has not yet decided if any future ouchem will be permanent tattoos or henna, which is now a more common practice among the non-magique.

Personality: Izîl is the quintessence of the retiring personality. She will observe and calculate until she is certain that the object of her gaze is trustworthy. Once her trust is gained, Izîl will prove to be a strong ally and, perhaps, even a good friend. She does enjoy all kinds of games and sports, and it is in this arena that you might just catch a fleeting smile!

History: Izîl is a girl of the Free People, the Imazighen, or Berbers, of northern Africa. She is a pure blooded girl, born in Algeria, though currently lives with her grandmother's family in Morocco. It was here, in the Ourika valley of the beautiful Atlas Mountains, that Izîl's story really starts. The village she comes from looks no different than the ordinary Berber villages around: squarish houses made from stone and block, flat roofed and overlooking verdant terraces all whilst overlooked by the snowy heights of the high mountains beyond.

Her mother and father died during a duel when Izîl was seven and she was brought to Morocco by her mother's mother. It was on that day that she showed her magic. After the duel, the victors entered her parents' house and found nothing of note so they left. However, when her grandmother arrived, she found Izîl in the main room, playing with some flowers and a small book. When asked, the girl said: "Men came in shouting. They stood right there on the edge of the carpet. They were looking for something. They said it was blue. I was scared and didn't want to be seen. They couldn't see me, even though they were looking at me. I laughed and wasn't scared anymore! Then they left."

In that instant, her grandmother packed all of the carpets and books and other things into a small bag. She told the girl that they were bad men, rivals to her artefact dealer father. She impressed upon the girl that it was vitally important to remember the men's faces. In case they ever met again and she had to --- defend herself. Izîl was impressed. Her mother rarely used magic, but her father did. She asked how this magic was done, and grandmother told her that she would learn at a place called Uagadou. Then they left and Izîl never saw Algeria again.

In Ourika, Izîl met her cousins, the children of her mother's sister. They looked different from her, and they told her that their father was an English wizard who came to Morocco. They told her all about the English game of quidditch and other strange things from other parts of the world, and Izîl soaked up all of this new knowledge. Likewise, she taught them about life in Algeria. Outside of her new home, Izîl remained curiously shy. Except when it came to games, then she opened up!

As Izîl and her cousins grew up, first they, then she herself, received the dream token from the far away school of Uagadou. Her older cousins taught her the Swahili language that was used at the school --- it was so different from the Tamazight language they spoke at home! And soon, she at last received a curious dream and awoke to find an inscribed stone in her left hand. Upon it was carved a most curious symbol. All of Izîl's cousins --- now her sisters and brothers, really --- mother, father and grandmother were excited and curious about her token.

Izîl chose for her grandmother --- her greatest guardian and first teacher --- to go out in the moonlight to accept her invitation to Uagadou.

Cat's Grace:
Izîl arrived at Uagadou, an unknown person in an unknown place. She had older cousins at the school, but they all had their friends and classmates and for the most part, the young Moroccan was left to her own devices. She was naturally not so much shy, but rather a reserved girl. She would not be the one to dash into a classroom at full speed, making a lot of noise and drawing attention to herself. No, that sort of behaviour she had no liking for at all. Mostly it was boys who made so much noise anyway, but Izîl preferred a different approach. She observed. Everything. She watched people. She examined plants. She studied stones. It was relatively easy to sneak up on a tree to study its habits, but Izîl had the gift of another kind.

Naturally quiet and conservative of motion, she was the kind of girl who could simply be in a place where others would congregate and they never paid her much attention at all. She was nothing and no one to them, so they went about their business, studying, talking, gossiping, plotting, planning. Whatever it happened to be, Izîl took it all in. She processed it and kept all those things in her mind. Often times, she simply wanted to be alone and she found it curious that she was able to somehow make herself --- not actually invisible --- but oddly unremarkable. With the exception of the other Berbers in the school, she did not look like southern Africans or the Ethiopians. Even with her tattoos worn proudly on her face, she learned how to walk among people pretty much unnoticed.

Looking back, she found this ability especially useful in her second year when several girls were plotting an extremely foolish and humiliating prank on her friend. She knew the girls, all of them, from classes and other activities, so it surprised Izîl a little when these girls sat down at the table in the great library near where she was sitting. Yes, there was potted palm tree partly obscuring her, but surely they saw her! She remained as still as a hunting cat, and they paid her no attention. She smiled within her heart. Especially, with her Historia ya Uchawi book open, they actually began to elaborate their plot! Six of them! Within earshot! They detailed the timing (the next fulling of the Moon), they detailed the place (the New Moon Gate), and what they would do (stun her, drag her to the Gate and pour muddy water all over her). Izîl could not believe what she was hearing! She really detested pranks, thinking that they were entirely too juvenile to participate in, but this one would embarrass her friend in front of the whole school!

As the miscreants concluded their planning and solemnly promised each other to carry out the deed no matter what, Izîl began to formulate her own plan. She took careful note of each of the six girls and the parts they were to play in the prank. Then she drew up a detailed letter which she had delivered to her friend, warning her of the impending activity and outlining her own plan. As the day of the full Moon passed, Izîl found herself in many places, observing the activities of certain girls. She smiled slyly as one found herself tipped into a fountain; another tripped over a rock that wasn't in her path moments before and broke her leg; still another could not find any of her clothes; a fourth and fifth found themselves in trouble for cheating at an exam; while the sixth found herself alone at the determined time of the prank, only to discover that Izîl's friend contrived to douse the leader of the miscreants with a pail of muddied water! From her place behind a tree, Izîl watched the mayhem and observed how the prankster was outpranked!

Advanced Casting:
Izîl's second year of schooling at Uagadou was quite eventful and she found that she had acquired a strong desire to study. Before, she read frequently, but mostly for enjoyment. Now that her studies were become more advanced, the girl found it more important than ever to take academic reading more seriously. So, she applied herself to improving her natural skills with magic. If her teachers assigned a reading from the textbook, one could be certain that Izîl would read from the primary resources on the topic as well! Especially if she faced some particularly difficult or advanced spell.

For example, she often applied herself most strongly during kutumia uchawi classes. There was a lot less theory and a lot more practical work in this class. Izîl loved to know how and why magic worked the way it did. When studying the advanced fire making spell, the girl was not satisfied, like so many others, with merely learning how to move her wand and what words to say. No. That was not good enough. Perhaps it was so for ordinary understanding, but she wanted more. She needed to know how it worked. So it was that Izîl found her feet treading the now familiar path towards the great library and its thousands of books on magical lore!

Taking out her notes, mostly full of questions that she hoped to find answers for, she methodically worked from there to find first a second year primer that could give her the basics. She was never satisfied with the primers' answers, but they always provided her with an index of resources she could use to delve ever more deeply into the topic. This often led her into books that some people might consider non magiques, as her grandmother called folk who had not been given the gift of magical ability. But these books on chemistry and physics, though usually well beyond her ability to comprehend, often provided her with the answers she was looking for. At least for her questions on how a spell worked.

Her library work paid off! Izîl discovered that, over the course of the year, she was better able to cast spells. Even the harder ones! More often than not, her casting was accurate and powerful. Of course, she was only a second year and no match for a really powerful wizard, yet she felt some pride in her efforts that she was able to accomplish magic not only in a practical way, but also with a better intuition and understanding for how it works.

Chasers Interception:
During Izîl’s second year, she had taken up the game of quidditch. As a chaser. She loved games and sports of all kinds, and quidditch was surely her favourite! She was not big or strong enough to smash anyone with a bludger or block the goal hoops. Nor did she quite have the patience to watch for a tiny golden bird like ball to make its sudden appearance. But what Izîl lacked in strength and patience, she more than made up for in agility and graceful motion of body. She’d already demonstrated a most uncanny ability to be in unexpected places and to move about, not invisible, but often unnoticed. This was a skill that she found applied very nicely to the game of quidditch!

It was true that Izîl had some experience and knowledge of the game from the years she lived in Morocco with her grandmother’s family. After all, her aunt, now adoptive mother, had married an English wizard who was a fan of the game. And as soon as Izîl could mount a toy broom, she was playing the game with her cousins and their friends! Of course, being toys, their brooms were neither terribly fast nor terribly agile, but the girl found that she had a knack for getting the most out of the old broomsticks, and she put her skill to good use. Very often, and always to the chagrin of the opposing chasers, she found that she was able to intercept them when they were passing! And she brought this skill to Uagadou with her.

Izîl considered this to be something of a natural extension of her cat like grace. As the two teams were zooming around, and the chasers were trying to grab one of the quaffles, the girl simply inserted herself into the right place at the right time! One time, she was playing at school, and the other team’s chaser was trying to pass to his team mate. But Izîl simply whizzed up from behind him and just as he let go of the quaffle, she snagged it from him and, turning towards her own team mate, sent it gracefully arcking through the air towards him, and then back again for the goal as she cleared herself from opposing interference! Izîl was most pleased when she heard the other team’s chasers shouting at her that she cheated or cried out in wonder how she was able to just sneak up and steal the quaffle that way!

Now, going into her third year at Uagadou, Izîl had high hopes that she’d play quidditch again and perhaps even for the school team if they should ever go abroad for some wizarding event! She smiled as she thought of some day visiting the great European school of Hogwarts, where her adoptive father studied, and snatching a few goals from one of their ace chasers! Now that would be a game to talk about! In the mean time however, she’d keep practicing this skill during drills and would keep trying to steal the quaffle from her irksome opponents!

COLIN'S PHILOSOPHY on KISSING and SNOGGING!!
One thing I've learned in my time at Hogwarts is that a very important distinction is lost by many students here! And I'm not talking about mixing up pewter and cast iron cauldrons either! (Let's just say that was a lesson in ballistics as much as a lesson in potions!)

No.

I'm talking about the very important distinction between Kissing and Snogging. Especially for those of us who are still navigating the whole stormy ocean between "GIRLS?? EWWW!!! THEY'RE SO GROSSS!!!" and "GIRLS?? WHERE!?!?" In my experience, the voyage has been soooooo awesomé!

So.

What's the big deal? Isn't a kiss the same as a snog? Not hardly my friend! The way I see it is like this:

A kiss is the dance of a butterfly, a snog is two piglets oinking into the great sunset --- Eliseo Céspedes

A kiss is something sweet, something reverant, something loving, right? Those should be given to people you love and have a tight relationship with! Your girlfriend --- *sighs in Clair!* --- your boyfriend; your parents; your siblings.

But snogging is different all together. Snogging is often part of a game, right, like Spin the Bottle. WHOA, that is such a fun game! And it's pretty popular here at Hoggys. But games have rules and if you break the rules, you're out of the game. So snog all you want during the game, but once the game is done, that's it! Just watch out for boys who have hag slugs! Best not to snog them once the wee beasties mature, because then you'll either turn into a hag if you're a girl, or a slug infested hag slug habitat if you're a boy! I don't know how the hag slugs know, but they do!

And lastly, no snogging outside the game if you've got a girlfriend or a boyfriend! Why you might ask? Well, it's simple really. Just remember that she's got a wand, and she knows how to use it! Especially if she's a Ravenclaw!

CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE

Year 1
C
Year 2

Where were you raised?
I was born and raised in the middle of the northern Highlands. On some muggle maps the place is called Loch Meadie, but few ever find it!
Is your family wealthy? Poor? Comfortable?
I reckon my family must be rather comfortable. Maybe even well to do.
How do you feel about that?
Well, I'm neither wealthy nor well to do! I've got a bit of money from the school stipend a couple changes of clothes, a broom, a fiddle and a few odds and ends.
Did you have a happy childhood?
Aye! Twas great! My brothers and sisters and cousins and me had the run of the castle as well as miles of the best land in Scotland!
Before your Hogwarts letter, what was your most influential life event? Good or bad.
Surely that was the birth of Ciarán, my little sister! I can't wait for her to start at Hoggys!
What is your favorite clothing style?
People probably think I'm lame. Look at me, I've worn the same kind of kilt and loose shirt since I was wee! I don't often wear shoes. I never even heard the word 'fashion' until I got here, and still don't see the point in it!
Do you have any favorite game(s)?
Well, we like playing card and board games, and my Da and uncles have this brilliant D&D setup! Outside, we play footie and camanacht and race horses and brooms!
What sort of music do you like?
We most often listen to I suppose what muggles would call 'classical' music? We play a lot music too, sometimes for dancing, sometimes for entertainment.
What's your favorite book genre?
I love faeries stories and high fantasy, so the likes of MacDonald and Morris and Tolkien and Scott. Those I reckon are the more famous!
Which class is your favorite?
I really like astronomy; then probably dark arts and charms.
How would you prefer to travel? (Hippogriff, broom, car, etc.)
Whoa! I like fast brooms and learned how to drive a motor car this summer before second year! So, yeah, I life fast motor cars too!
Is there a broom they want? If they already have their favorite, what makes it great?
I've got a Silver Arrow from the racing team, and I'm happy with that!
What do you look for in a friend?
I look for someone I can trust. You know. Secrets and stuff that should be kept quiet?
What would you see in the Mirror of Erised?
Um. Whoa. I haven't seen the mirror yet! But, I reckon I'd see Liam. He was my twin.
What are your strongest two or three traits?
I've got a good sense for choosing friends. I do well in school and like to study on my own, so I'm pretty smart. I've met a really smart and beautiful girl. I want to marry her some day! I think we'll make a pretty good pair and she's definitely a strength!
Who do you admire most?
I admire my Da's brother, my Uncle Colin most. He fought in the War; fought for Harry. Da did too, and I admire him as well! Uncle Colin died in the War, and Da named me after him. I'm very proud of that!
Is there someone you wish you could meet?
Of course, I wish I could meet him, my Uncle Colin! I'd also like to meet that Tom Riddle and give him a piece of my mind!
Are you typically underestimated in strength, intelligence, maturity, etc?
Some folks are actually surprised that I'm not actually the immature git they think I am!
What do you like about yourself?
I'm kind of coming to like that I was sorted into Slytherin. Da and Uncle Colin were both Ravenclaws, Liam was Ravenclaw...It's kind of hard to admit, but I think I fit Slytherin pretty well after all.
Do you have a motto, mantra, or favorite quote?
Aye. My motto --- or epitaph, really --- is "He was a Snake who would fly with Eagles."

THE MOON

Call it what you like, Earth's celestial and epicentric dance partner, once intimately united and now and for evermore withdrawing, the Moon is inextricably interwoven with Colin's life. The Mo0n's influence is profound: his gravity drags the great ocean around the globe of Earth raising and lowering her tides; his reflected sunlight dictates the ease with which creatures of the night might see their way; he has long fascinated muggle and mageborn alike; and has even been visited by the former in their terrible missiles of fire and doom.

Image

Moon has taken a peculiar interest in Colin, and people like him. Werewolves. The very name strikes terror in the hearts of muggles. Especially those who live in and around the wild places. Wolves and their transfigural cousins figure prominently in the folklore of muggles, from Lang to Grimm to Andersen; and they have grown no less in fame and horror once muggles developed the technology to watch pictures in a box being moved very fast!

Wizardkind is no less familiar and no less terrified by these people they still call "monsters". For wizards too have their folklore and also their natural history. And werewolves figure no less prominently. Muggles are ignorant of the fact, and many wizards are too, that the recent invention of wolfsbane potion, while not curing lycanthropy, does effectively eliminate one of the condition's more terrible symptoms. And that, of course, is the dissociation of the human mind and will and very soul from the physical beast. The potion is not inexpensive, and not all werewolves can afford it. But for those who take it, the resulting transformation reveals a creature that is a true hybrid of raw animal power in perfect hypostasis with the rational human person.

And what of the Moon? Where does he fit into the picture?

The Moon is inextricably linked to the lives of every werewolf, for it is in his waxing from nadir to zenith that his influence pulls on Colin, dragging him towards the Change. He calls it "his monthly" and it is accompanied by increasing grumpiness, cramps, aches, bitchiness and aggression. The wolfsbane might keep him from turning into an actual beast as full moon approaches, but it's absolute shite for the other symptoms!

On the practical side, Colin's lycanthropy has helped to spur his interest in astronomy and astrology. To that end, Colin was given shiny moon phase watch to help teach him responsibility in taking his potion on time. And he also has a nice calendar that shows all the moon phases each day of the year! He has become a little obsessive about it, trying to pinpoint when his symptoms begin to show and which ones come first and how long they last.

He just wishes his wolfy paws could properly hold a quill and parchment!
