Summer break was usually a time that flew by for most children. A time to spend with friends, go on vacation and let go. However, the same idea didn't seem to apply for Grayson. He was no loner or anything along those lines. While it was true his parents never made the effort to go on any eccentric vacations, he had plenty of friends, he could really be having the time of his life if he wanted to. Yet the idea of spending summer around his friends didn't seem all that amazing to the young boy. Nobody seemed to quite understand his ideas, and being left with nothing but his mere imagination already sounded like a better plan. And so that's what he did.

The young boy had gone into the break not quite knowing what he would do. Sure, he had a general gist, but what he'd actually spend his hours doing? He had no idea. But his entire summer changed when he stumbled upon the treehouse. He had been exploring the creek near his neighborhood, looking for something to do. Living in a small town in Massachusetts didn't give him many options for hobbies either, but he had wandered into the forest hoping to find something to make up for the town's lack of entertainment.

And it was then he saw it, an old abandoned treehouse, lodged firmly in the thick branches of an old oak tree. The ladder was still in an alright condition, left hanging from the tree by whomever last entered. The space still seemed to be in an alright condition when he entered. And so that was where Grayson spent his summer. Whether it was reading, drawing, or merely staring at the ceiling, allowing the wind to pass through the windows as he daydreamed, Grayson would sprint to the treehouse at the crack of dawn each morning, disguising his absence to his mother as trips to the nearby library to do some 'summer studying.'

Today was no exception from Grayson's usual routine. As he stuck his usual sticky note to the dining room table, which informed his mother of his absence and 'location,' he crept out the back door and sprinted down his street. As he came to the forest, he slid under the short and ineffective wooden fence and into the depths of the forest. By then he had memorized the path to his treehouse, skipping over roots and stray rocks that had once tripped him.

He finally made his way to his hideout, the ladder still down from the day before, for he couldn't reach it if he left it closed. Notebook in hand, he made his way up, shutting the door as he finally reached the top. He slumped down into one of the colorful beanbags he had managed to haul inside, his gaze on the ceiling as the morning light cracked through the windows. Unknown to the young boy was that he wasn't alone in the forest..

The joys and freedom of summer always appealed to Selena greatly. From that very first day to the very last, she was sure to make every single one count. The days were usually spent either exploring or reading, her idea of a perfect summer day. Another child of her age might be with friends playing until the sun began setting, but Selena wasn't exactly that type of child. On this day, she held a book in one hand, gripping it tightly so it wouldn't accidentally slip from her grasp. Her home was too loud with the rest of her siblings, especially the baby, to read in. So, she had set out to find an ample spot in which she could read the day away.

Selena had stumbled across a forested area just a few minutes ago, and yet she was already hopelessly lost. She and her family were taking another one of their family trips abroad, so really she had no idea where anything was around these unfamiliar parts. Her real home was in Bristol, England, so the current residence in Massachusetts was foreign to the young girl.

Still, she wandered ahead in the forest, undaunted by the possibility of being lost. A child of her age was not quite worried about such things quite yet. Surely she would be once night began to fall, but right now when the sun was up there was nothing to worry about. Settling into the base of a tree, she drew her book onto her lap and began to read.

What must have been around a half an hour later, Selena saw a boy that looked to be about her age dash past her. He seemed to be running with a purpose and she, being the curious girl she was, decided to follow him. When he finally stopped, she saw his destination was a treehouse nestled high up in the trees. The boy made his way up quickly and once again, she followed.

She climbed her way up the ladder, book still in hand, and when she got to the trapdoor, she gave it a hard push to open it. Crawling inside she looked at the boy who sat in a beanbag chair. "Hi," she said, a bit uncertainly now. "What's your name? Mine's Selena."

Grayson was getting quite comfortable in his hideout. Notebook set gently in his lap, he tapped his pen against the surface as he began to think of something to write. His notebook was filled with all sorts of blurbs and scribbles. It was a hobby of his, since speaking honestly got a bit too much sometimes. He settled on writing a journal entry for the day, and perhaps later he'd write a story or two. Then maybe he'd read. He had a good stash of comic books stored in the treehouse. He smiled, melting into his chair as he planned out his whole day in his mind. Today would be fun, and absolutely nothing would be there to ruin it for him. Or that's what he thought.

The loud creak of the trapdoor opening caught Grayson by surprise. Letting out a surprised squeak of sorts as he nearly jumped out of his chair, Grayson was almost certain he could feel his heart jump out of his chest, and not in a metaphorical manner. He closed his eyes, attempting to slow down both his breath and his heartbeat as he rested his hand on his chest. Once he oriented himself, his eyes find their way to the door. Had it been the wind? Surely not, the wind hadn't been that strong when he last checked.

Instead, he discovered a small brunette girl, a girl who looked about Grayson's age. He squinted. How did she find her way up here? He was certain he was always as sneaky as he could possibly be. Though, he did have to admit. He had been getting a bit lazy recently. "Hi. Who are you?" He asked with a furrowed brow, his greeting quite straight-to-the-point. His question was quickly answered. Grayson squinted. Selena. He'd make note of that.

Now, on to the next question. "How'd you get here? Are you an alien?" The small boy inquired. He hesitated for a second, wondering if he should introduce himself. Again, what if she was an alien? He paused. No, Selena definitely did not sound like an alien name. Unless she was lying. But that was unlikely. This girl seemed completely harmless, in fact, she seemed quite nice, actually. "I'm... Grayson," he said hesitantly, offering his hand.

He gasped, another, very important, question popping up in the boy's head. "You're not gonna tell my mom right? She doesn't know I'm here, she thinks I'm at the library. Her name's Jamie. I hope you don't know her," he said nervously. It was better to be safe than sorry. For all he knew, this girl could be best friends with his mom, or a spy hired by her when she started to get suspicious. He pursed his lips. He really shouldn't have introduced himself then, he was sure to be busted now.

The boy had been writing in a notebook before she had come in and startled him. By the looks of it, he was not used to having company in his treehouse. It didn't look like anyone else knew about the secluded hideout either. She watched him curiously as he closed his eyes and put a hand over his heart in attempt to calm it from the recent scare. Although Selena hadn't meant to scare him that much, he certainly seemed to have taken it rather badly. Hopefully this rough start wouldn't impact a new friendship from forming.

After the boy asked who she was and she introduced herself, she gave him a soft smile. When he asked if she was alien, she couldn't help but giggle. "No, I'm not an alien! I'm a girl, which might be alien to you, but I'm sure that's not what you meant." She waited for him to introduce himself patiently. Perhaps he was pondering over the alien part still, who knew what went on in a boy's mind. It was foreign territory to the young girl.

Eventually he introduced himself as Grayson. "Nice to meet you Grayson," she replied with a smile. "I don't know your mom, but even if I did I wouldn't tell her. I know what's it's like to want to be alone." She gave Grayson another smile, hopefully prompting him into opening up a bit more.
