Christmas was upon them and the castle had transformed with festive cheer, and errands and activities had abounded in preparation for the upcoming holidays. To help add a bit of personalized flair to the decorations adorning the castle interior, and to provide students with a token to take home for their own enjoyment, the Great Hall had been arranged for a bit of crafting. Christmas trees dressed in popcorn, candles, and baubles lined the hall walls, the usual long tables pushed a touch inwards to accommodate. It made for a cushier atmosphere, and one that encouraged students to interact.

Unfortunately, the two trees in the small hall that flanked the entrance to the meal hall had remained rather forlornly barren. It was as though the House Elves had—inconceivably—run out of ornaments with which to decorate them. Fortunately, there was a very obvious solution to this tiny little problem: make more! Today's activity would centre around the creation and decoration of Christmas baubles and ornaments.

"Good afternoon, and welcome." Standing near the fore of the hall, Evelynn—clad in her school robes depicting the crest of Gryffindor over her left chest, and prefect and captain badges pinned to her collar—would greet those entering. "Are you here for the crafting?" she might inquire at random. Then, with an open palm gesturing to the tables, add, "Please, do find a seat. Any at all. I encourage you to break your habits and seat yourself in a spot unusual to you. Perhaps at one of the other House's tables, mn?" This, she would continue to do throughout the activity, welcoming late comers and ushering them to a seat with quietly uttered instructions along the way.

Still, when the majority of arrivals had found there seats, she would turn to the gathering, one hand folded over the other to lay flat against her lap where she stood. Eyes the colour of midnight snow would sweep over the huddled faces, noting who was present, and who had flocked to whom. Then, with a smile, she would begin.

"As I am sure you are all already aware, today we will be crafting ornaments and baubles with which to decorate a Christmas tree. Before you," a flourish of a hand would invite them to investigate, "you will find a number of supplies."

And they certainly would. Organized nicely across the tables was a plethora of arts and craft necessities: stacks of card stock, sticks of glue, bottles of glitter, reams of ribbons, bits of tinsel, swatches of fabric, bowls of dried flower buds, varieties of beads, piles of sequins, bunches of pipe cleaners, and any other accessories and items someone might wish for—all in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. Evelynn certainly was nothing if not prepared.

Of course, decorations were only as good as their base. To that end, every student would be given a selection from which to choose: clear plastic baubles could be filled with items and decor to suit the aesthetic of aspiring decorators; foam spheres could be used as a base to pin items or offer structure to quilted and textured designs; and salt-dough ornaments of varying shapes (courtesy of the busy House Elves) could be decorated and painted to please their maker's vision. And if none of those struck inspiration, scissors were available to cut the cardstock into shapes to mould and fold as desired.

"First, select what sort of ornament you would like to make. Then consider its purpose. Will it be for yourself? For your tree at home? Will you add it to one of the derelict evergreens you saw on your way in? Perhaps for a friend as a token of your appreciation? Or some combination? Supplies are plentiful, and you are welcome to make use of anything you can find. Please share, however. There is enough to go around. We have two hours allotted for crafting, and even after you have finished one bauble, you are welcome to stay to craft another if you would like.

"Further, the house elves have been generous enough to prepare a few tables of snacks should your efforts make you peckish." Another gesture of her hand would lead their eyes to a handful of small scattered tables towards the front upon which were prepared a variety of teas, hot chocolate, and displays of holiday baking. "And if you are short on ideas, there—" She inclined her head towards a small tree displayed on one of the food tables decorated with assorted ornaments. "—are some samples that might serve to trigger a muse."

"And with that..." Her hands fell once more to their neutral resting place against her lap. "I hope you enjoy yourselves. Please do not hesitate to ask if there is something you need, or you have a question."

From there, she would continue to usher late-comers to an open seat, and tidy up the crafting supplies or food tables as the hours progressed. Driven by curiosity, she would occasionally meander through the narrow rows between the tables to glimpse at the various creations as they took form, her keen eyes always vigilant for any trouble that may arise.

Cody walked into the Great Hall, two evergreens bare as he walked in for one reason. Making a bauble or ornament for the amazing idea of Yule! Cody's very first year at Hogwarts and there is a fun celebration already! Asides from him squishing a geese or smashing a pumpkin, Cody thought this was ingenious.

He looked at the table with provided materials, grabbed semitransparent silver glitter, and black paint. As well as a clear ornament of plastic, with nothing on it's interior and exterior.

He walked to his area, dumped in the glitter, then walked back to the supply table, grabbed a few bat shaped tiny objects and attempted to put them into the ornament.

After doing so, he used the black paint he got, then tried to make a thin, thin layer of on the exterior of the ornament. Thin enough to see the glitter when light catches it, to sparkle out.

He put the cap on it, then walked up to one of the two evergreen trees, and put his ornament on one of the lower branches, not attempting to show everyone his ornament, asides from the fact that his ornament was the first on the tree... but hopefully that didn't attract much attention.

He said his thanks to Evelynn Decipio and walked out of the room.

Outfit: School robes
There was something irksomely depressing about the Christmas season at Hogwarts, it seemed. Whatever Liana did, she couldn't shake off the oppressive gloom that followed her this past week. Never had she felt so unhappy back at home, even though the holidays weren't particularly enjoyable there, either. She did get presents, though - largely functional ones, such as new shoes, a ball gown, an enchanted quill or a book; in most cases, they gave her joy. Other than that, her Christmas was normally spent up in her room or in the Kerr manor library. However, she would not be going home for the festivities this year, as per her father's decision. As if that in itself wasn't bad enough, everyone in the castle seemed to be far more cheerful than usual. The holiday spirit appeared to be far more potent here than in the domain of Marcus Kerr. For some inexplicable reason, that made her feel even more upset about not being allowed to go home.

Attending the daily gatherings around the school to prepare for the celebrations was not exactly working to improve her mood, but it helped to keep herself occupied. That was the reason that encouraged her to show up to a yet another activity. The invitation to sit at a different spot then usual caused the girl to cast a contemplative look at the Ravenclaw table. No, that was a puerile idea. She ended up seating herself in her usual place at the Slytherin table.

After a brief consideration, she selected a transparent glass bauble and unscrewed its cap, checking the size of the opening. It wasn't that big, but she could probably make it work if she was very careful with what items would go inside. The redhead took a handful of white glitter that looked almost like fluffy snow, and gingerly funneled it into the bauble, trying to spill as little as possible. Once that was done, she took a small pine cone with a bit of branch still attached to it, and spent a good five minutes trying to place it inside without breaking off too many needles or mangling the whole thing.

Once finished, the bauble didn't look nearly as good as she'd thought it would, but perhaps it was still attractive enough to be hung somewhere at the back of one of the trees. Liana could only wonder how the poor evergreens would look with embellishments of such different styles and varied colours decorating them. Tomorrow she would have to glance at them when she came for breakfast. With that thought in mind, she rose from her seat and exited the room, leaving her ornament on the table.
Action: Crafting a bauble and leaving.

Dee had never been the crafty type, really. Not in the arts-and-crafts kind of way, at least. In the how to get in and out of trouble or how to make sure you end up on top kind of way, well, that was a different story.

Still, she had decided she should maybe make some effort this holiday season. She'd turned into a bit of a shut-in in the past few months, spending all her time on school, duelling, and her various other obligations, and she was only now starting to try and change that. It was good to get out among people again, her extrovert traits had most definitely started to atrophy over the past few months.

Wriggling her fingers at Evelynn in greeting, Dee plopped down into a random seat, then took a look at the supplies in front of her. There were... things, and... stuff, and... well, you could never go wrong with a bit of glue and a lot of glitter. Grabbing one of the clear plastic spheres, Dee reached for a bottle of glue, then paused, setting both down and reaching up to tie her hair into a ponytail. Glue and glitter and long hair were not a good combination. No, of course she was not speaking from personal experience. She would've never made a mistake as silly as that.

Hair out of the way, she spread some glue on the bottom of the bauble, then dipped it into some green glitter. There. That was already starting to look kind of christmas-y, wasn't it?

XXXXLate. Again. Maggie was no stranger to showing up at odd hours and missing the opening festivities, especially when it came to events such as these, where attendance was not mandatory but rather strongly encouraged. There was a difference, see, between something being encouraged and something being required. Maggie often walked the fine line between the two, toeing it and trying to stay as out of the norm as she possibly could. Was that possible, though? Was it possible to be different when everyone at your magic school was already so deviant from the norm? Probably not.

Those weren't the thoughts that Maggie could be afforded now, though. With Yule just around the corner and festivities being monitored by the Hogwarts elite, there was absolutely no space to be observing anything otherwise.

Bauble making. Creative pursuits weren't all that foreign to Maggie, not really, as she did attempt to make art and craft when able, but she that wasn't suggesting that she was any good at it. In essence, Maggie did have a creative streak, but that wasn't a lone venture. Because most things she made, even with her very best efforts, sort of just looked like a hot mess. A hot mess and like something exploded.

Still, an attempt could be made.

Maggie grabbed a clear bauble, ready to be filled up to the brim with knicks and knacks of all sorts. First, she grabbed a handful of beads in one palm and a handful of dried flower buds in the other, dropping them at the sides of her place setting and picking up the tiny materials, threatening to spill over the side of the table and rolling around from the force of how she had dropped them on the surface without a care in the world. There. Now, when she shook the plastic thing, it made a plasticky clanking noise.

Still, it needed something more. So Maggie grabbed a bottle of glue, a tube of glitter, and a red ribbon. First, the glue was squirted on the neck of the bauble and spread over the front surface of the plastic. The ribbon was stuck on the neck and the glitter was shaken onto the glue on the front, adhering there and making a truly fantastic ball of glitter.

Fantastic was one word for it. Ugly would probably be more fitting.

Entering the Great Hall, Robert found himself reminiscing of the times he spent with his parents back home, putting a little bit of anything and everything on the Christmas tree they kept in the kitchen. His father always made sure to create little birds from straw and then cast a spell to make them fly circles around the tree. Even though it had been his own choice to stay over Christmas, a part of him missed them when he saw all of the little creations the other students had begun making.

Robert began gathering up supplies and placed some of the things he needed around him at a vacant spot at the table. He managed to pick up scissors, hemp string, a cardstock shape of a swan he was pretty sure he could cut into a raven, and a sizeable pile of straw. Although he proved that he truly didn't have his fathers surgical precision, he did manage to cut the cardstock swan into a smaller bird. Not quite a raven, but at least no longer a swan. After butchering the cardstock, he began tying strands of straw around the card. Beginning with the body and working himself methodically out to the wings, tailfeathers, and finally, the head.

After some groans and emergency clippings later, Robert sat there with a straw bird in his palm. A bit misshapen, granted, but a bird, nonetheless. For the first time this Yule Celebration, he had created something that didn't look half bad. Not half good, but definitely not half bad. "Shame you can't fly." he would say, his grin widening ever so slightly. "Well, at the very least, I can help you hover." he continued and tied the string around the birds body, leaving ample room for it to hang freely from a branch.

After decorating cookies yesterday, Lily was excited to go to another Christmassy activity in the Great Hall: bauble crafting! All of these fun and crafty activities were definitely the best way for her to avoid spending too much time thinking about her family and how much she missed them. She would be back home in a few days anyway.

This time, the girl who was in charge of the event was Gryffindor prefect and captain according to the badges on her collar. She was inviting the students to sit somewhere unusual to shake things up and explaining the rules of the activity. Lily listened studiously as usual then gathered the supply she needed - a clear plastic bauble, dark and light green paint, some red glitter and a paintbrush - and sat in front of a guy she had seen before but didn't really know. She enjoyed the Christmas mood all around her while focusing on her painting. She went for an easy mistletoe pattern. Her idea was to gift it to her grandma. Harriet Bridges was indeed famous for her handmade Christmas ornaments: paper wizards flying on miniature broomsticks, snowflakes cascading from branch to branch, golden snitches twirling around the tree... Lily's mistletoe bauble was by no means as beautiful as her grandma's, and Lily didn't know enough about spells to put a spell on it, but it's the thought that counts, isn't it? About an hour after she'd started, she was pretty happy with her bauble.

Lily turned to the boy next to her and wondered what he was making. She'd never spoken with him before but she guessed from his robe that he was a Ravenclaw like her and she was in a good enough mood to talk to someone she didn't know. "Are you done with your ornament? Is it a raven? It's really pretty, did you make it to show some Ravenclaw pride?" Lily asked the guy.

Interacting with @Dealla Prince, crafting small felt birds.
Cain was in his own world using some needle and thread to sew together a few black birds out of felt with different coloured sequin eyes on each of them. He stuffed them with a bit of cotton to make them puff out and attached a ribbon loop on the top so they could each hang easily on the tree. He wasn't sure how many he was making yet and he hadn't paid enough attention to know if there was a limit to how many he could make. It was nice just sitting with his thoughts and absorbing the festive atmosphere, the candle fire twinkling on every candle hung on the trees as well as hovering in the air. It was a wonder wax didn't fall on anyone, but perhaps that was magic as well since nothing really caught fire either.

His thoughts were interrupted when a girl sat beside him seemingly by chance. She bound up her hair after surveying the materials before them and got into the blue and glitter. He observed this foray into crafting an ornament, his hands paused mid-stitch as he wondered if he should roll up his own sleeves to avoid the curse that is glitter. Once it got on you, it became part of you for several weeks. This was perhaps his chance to try and talk to someone, even lend a hand should she require it, though it looked like she had it covered for now. Glitter ball ornament, fairly festive indeed. He gestured over to some of the other ornaments.
"They have ornaments that are empty inside and clear outside too, you could fill it with glitter and shake it like a snow globe. If you wanted to. Who is that one for?"

Nell walked into the hall, greeted Evelynn. She was the Gryfinndor prefect and Nell was sure she'd seen her around. Nell was quite excited to make ornaments; she hadn't done so for a few years. She planned on making them for the two bare looking trees outside the small hall, not planning to go home for the holidays.

Seeing the types of ornaments she could make, Nell settled on the clear plastic baubles which she could fill. Memories filled her of doing these as a child, they always fascinated her for some odd reason. They still do peak her interest rather than the styrofoam or the dough type. She grabbed three empty, plastic baubles and took a seat.

Nell grabbed a piece of sturdy cardstock, cutting a small strip. She rolled it into a tube like shape, using glue to secure it. She then proceeded to wrap a green pip cleaner around it, gluing it in place. Another bit of glue secured it to the bottom of the bauble, with no chance of movement. Then, she filled the empty space with white sequins, a few red ones scattered in. She put just enough so you could still see the mini tree inside. Nell closed her first bauble, relatively happy with what she did.

Her next one would be a little bit simpler. She took some larger red gold, and green sequins and glued them on the inside of the bauble. She filled it up with some white tinsel, giving it a nice look. She liked the simplicity of this ornament, and now she had one more to do.

She glued some black sequins in a curved shape on the near bottom of the inside of the bauble. She placed two more sequins slightly above those. Nell cut out an orange triangle, gluing it to be the carrot nose of her snowman. She cut out a blue piece of felt to be the shape of the scarf, and put it right at the bottom of the bauble. Then, she found a large white pom-pom the size of the ornament and placed it inside.

Feeling hungry after about an hour of decorating and talking a little with other students, she felt hungry. Remembering the snack table Evelynn had mentioned earlier on, she made her way over. There were a few cookies and some hot chocolate, so she took a cup and a few cookies to snack on as she sat on the outskirts of the action.

"Are you done with your ornament? Is it a raven? It's really pretty, did you make it to show some Ravenclaw pride"

The comment took Robert by surprise. He snapped out of his little monologue with the straw bird and peered at the person sitting next to him, trying to hide his surprise. To be fair, he had developed a streak of keeping to himself whenever he was neck-deep in his books, something that had meant that he hadn't really made any friends so far. The Ravenclaw-robed girl looked to be the same age as him, and, while he had never spoke to her, he recognized her. He had seen in the corridors, her hazelnut-colored hair tied up in a little bun, and her round glasses barely covering her eyes.

"Oh! I-. No-. Eh-. Yes. Well, sort of." he stuttered anticlimactically. "We have this tradition back home of making little figures of straw at this time of year. Mostly rams and smaller birds, though. I thought maybe a raven could be fitting this year, being sorted into Ravenclaw and all." Robert continued, fidgeting with the bird in his hands. "H-how'd you know it was a raven? I thought I couldn't really get the beak right." he finished, trailing off for a moment.

Internally, he screamed. He usually prided himself with being well spoken, however, being approached by someone regarding something that wasn't directly tied to the school caught him totally off guard. It shouldn't have, of course, but, it did. I really need to get out more.
