history.
every summer, like the roses, childhood returns.
Carmen and Filip Johansen work in a large Norwegian travelling circus called The Jubilant Bazaar, and unlike most married couples working in the circus business, they don't perform together. Carmen is a trapeze artist, while Filip is a magician. But he's not any magician, as those working in the Bazaar knows. Filip is a pureblood, and had graduated from Durmstrang Institute. He was an exceptional wizard and a favourite amongst his professors, and could have been anything he wanted. An Auror, a professor, anything.

Then he met Carmen.

Carmen and Filip met when the Bazaar was performing in his hometown, in the year 2000. They were smitten with each other on sight, and as cheesy as it sounds... Filip ran away with the circus. At first, his pureblood parents and friends tried to bring him back, but he turned them away angrily, having begun to love the circus life. The circus folk accepted his magic immediately, having seen stranger things, and by the end of 2001, he and Carmen were married.

Cielle was born in the city of Bergen when the Bazaar was there, only half an hour before the performance itself. Those who had bought tickets to the show that night would have noticed that there had been a very loud commotion at one of the caravans parked nearby. All the performers had gathered around the Johansen's caravan, yelling words of encouragement, and the ringmaster, a rather selfish and formidable man, was walking around shouting for everyone to go to the main tent. Carmen and Filip would laugh about it later on - Cielle had been causing trouble even before she was born.

Her upbringing was... off-grid, that was for sure. The Bazaar was a travelling circus, so Cielle never really settled down anywhere, always in a caravan and on the move. She had trained for the trapeze ever since she could walk, and while she wasn't exactly made for it as her mother was, with her taller-than-average body and long limbs, she loved it, and she and her mother created a double-act that they began to perform when she was seven.

In their spare time, the Bazaar kids were allowed to run wild as long as they didn't bother the adults, and of course, Cielle made sure to break that rule every single time, always pranking one person or the other. One regular victim was the Ringmaster, who, in Cielle's opinion, was a slimy, greedy git. She hated him with a passion, and her pranks on him seemed to always go a little better than she had expected - signs of the magic Filip had passed down to his daughter, although no one really stopped to think about it, choosing to assume that they had just gotten lucky.

Then she received her invitation from Durmstrang, and her whole world turned upside down. While Cielle was well aware of her father's heritage, she had never truly considered the possibility that she could be magical as well. Filip tried to convince her that it wasn't that bad, but the stubborn Cielle's mind was made up. She didn't want to leave the Bazaar to go to some stupid school, no matter how cool it was that she could do real, actual magic. It took a lot of convincing for Cielle to give in, and even more to convince the ringmaster to let her go.
appearance.
bright eyes | pixie cut | chaos clothes | stronk
As a general rule, Cielle looks slightly windswept and casually, uncaringly untidy. Her dark brown hair, cut short and close to her head in a pixie cut, always looks as though someone has ruffled it teasingly. Her eyes, sharp and never without a twinkle of mischief, are the colour of chocolate, and she's taken to smudging a little bit of kohl around them every morning. She rarely walks to get to places, preferring to run, and she is always fidgeting with something - a Rubix cube, a pen, a fidget spinner...

Cielle's sense of style is chaotic, to say the least. Her wardrobe consists of hand-me-downs from her friends back at home, thrifted items she found on sale in second-hand shops, and DIY accessories she's made throughout the years. Her outfits look like she grabbed the first things she saw and put them on without thinking, and most of the time, this assumption would be correct. She's even managed to incorporate the chaos into her uniform. Mismatched socks, a multicoloured hand-knitted scarf with a million holes in it, badges pinned to her robes, colourful buttons and hidden pockets sewn all over her clothing.

Once considered tall for her age, Cielle hasn't grown much in the past few years and now stands at a slightly shorter height compared to her peers at 5'3 and 3 quarters. She looks upon her previous tall status with great sorrow and likes to stress the three-quarters part emphatically. She also works out quite a lot, and as a result, is very strong and fit. Despite eating more than a blue whale, she finds it easy to stay slender. She feels this is sufficient compensation for the recent lack of growth.
personality.
wild | spontaneous | loyal | prickly
Cielle is a force of nature. She is difficult to understand, being full of self-contradictions and bottled-up feelings. Spontaneous and tough as nails, she likes to roll with the punches and go with the flow, adapting herself and her plans to suit the situation. Cielle is opinionated and unafraid to speak her mind; she's developed a bit of a filter over the years, but her manner of speaking is still quite straightforward compared to some of her peers. She values honesty and tries to practice it herself as often as she can, but if the situation should call for it, she won't hesitate to lie if it will keep her and her loved ones safe.

She is typically quite friendly towards her classmates, although if provoked, her fierce side will show, and she can be rather mean if she wants to, seemingly for no reason at times. Cielle is also very mistrustful, and despite being relatively approachable and easy to get along with, it can take a while for her to trust someone completely. However, her loyalty, once earned, is steady and unwavering, and she'd be willing to fight to the death for her friends and family. For Cielle, there is nothing more important than the ones she's chosen to love - nothing could convince her to turn her back on them once they've become one of 'her' people.

Her growing doubt about who she is has caused her to become a little quieter, a little more reflective over the years. That isn't to say that Cielle isn't loud anymore, only that she tries to stop and think about her actions more than she used to. Sometimes, though, her impulsive nature still gets the better of her, and she can't deny that she's a thrill-seeker, someone who'll happily break the rules if it means she and her friends can have a bit of fun.

She's not the best of students and her spellwork is dismal, but Cielle is street-smart, flexible, and practical, with the ability to read people surprisingly well. She knows how to see through facades and lies, because she, too, is a good liar herself. Although she doesn't do well in subjects that require wandwork, she thrives in anything physical, such as Flying, and she's recently discovered a passion for CMoC and Divination.

Even as a baby, eyes would linger over her just a moment longer than the rest, taking in her appearance. She inherited her mother's dark eyes and soft, thick hair, and her father's height and strength, and no one could ever truly decide which parent she took after - it was as though Cielle was a perfect blend of both, although only in appearance, for her temper and behaviour was all her own.

As she grew older, Cielle became subject to jealousy. She was not the smartest or the richest or the kindest - yet she was always the centre of attention, the girl everyone stared at, especially at Durmstrang, where all the other girls seem to have the same face and persona. To begin with, Cielle disliked the attention. She does not care for her appearance. During her childhood, she wore whatever fit her, regardless of whether it was too small or too dirty, and her hair, despite being kept short for easy maintenence, was always knotted and unbrushed. The way she saw it, the attention she recieved for her looks was getting in the way of, well, everything, and tried to downplay her appearance in favour of maintaining good relationships with the rest of the circus children - however, by doing this, Cielle unwittingly made herself even more attractive.

It wasn't until she arrived at Durmstrang that she stopped trying to hide the fact that she was beautiful. Not only did the boys in her year send shy glances and confessions of love her way, but they also snuck her small gifts like pretty trinkets and flowers, snuck into her bag when they thought she wasn't looking or placed outside her dormitory in between classes or at night. Although Cielle initially scoffed and laughed in their faces, she later realised that there were advantages that came with her newfound situation. The boys helped her cheat on tests, aided her in pranks and covered for her when she skipped classes.

Although, to be completely honest, she isn't pretty, per se, but more so interesting to look at. However, that is exactly why it's so hard to tear your eyes away from her face. It's rather funny if you think about it, because Cielle should been appeared to be just like her peers. Apart from her tall, muscular build, her appearance is rather similar to theirs - her movements fluid and graceful, her facial proportions just about right, her legs long and slim. It's her personality that shines and makes her different - the rebellious twinkle in her eye, the reckless energy she radiates, the loud laughter that follows her around. It's that little bit extra that makes everyone stop and stare.

Cielle always managed to get out of the way in time. When she played tag as a child, she always won, managing to dodge the outstretched hand with ease. Her friends wondered how she did it. Cielle was taller and faster, of course, so luck was on her side anyway - but even when they did catch up to her, the agile Cielle still managed to avoid getting tagged. When she was older, she began to challenge the older children and often fought with them - sometimes playfully, other times not. Cielle was strong, but they were stronger... and yet, she still managed to get out unscathed most of the time. Their punches always seemed to miss and connect with air rather than Cielle, which the young girl found rather amusing at times.

Her luck and agility also aided her in her pranks. Cielle's mischief-making has often resulted in an adult chasing after her with a frying pan in their hands, threatening to tell her parents (not that it would have done much, anyway. Carmen and Filip often turned a blind eye when it came to Cielle and her wild adventures.) The trapeze artist would only laugh in response and weave in and out of the caravans, even mocking the adults with sarcastic comments as they stumbled their way around the campsite to her. When they finally gave up chasing her and threw the frying pan, Cielle simply ducked or stepped to the side, watching it fly past her with a grin before leaping away to rejoin her friends and prank someone else.

It helped at Durmstrang, too. Cielle disliked Quidditch (she might have made a good Beater with her strength, but she didn't do well with team sports, especially when she wasn't the leader), but there was also Broom Racing, and that was where Cielle shone. It was perfect for her independant, competitive nature, a sport where it was every man for himself. That wasn't to say it was easy for her either. Sometimes the other racers would cast spells at her, hoping to knock her off her broom or into someone else, and Cielle was hopeless with magic, so it wasn't like she could defend herself either. She used her quick reflexes to her advantage - it was either get hit with a spell and lose, or dodge it and win.

Whether it was instinct or pure luck, Cielle didn't care. As long as she could win.

Cielle doesn't scare easily. She never has. As a child, Cielle had always been the unashamedly boldest out of the rest of the circus kids, the one who never chickened out of a dare no matter how preposterous it was, the girl for whom nothing was too scary. She leapt from balconies into swimming pools without any second thoughts, nose pinched shut and legs tucked neatly into her chest, and watched horror movies for the fun of it, chomping away steadily at her popcorn and laughing off the jumpscares with her friends. She's always first in line for the rollercoasters and similarly designed rides at theme parks, and she'll never back down from a fight if it's got to be done. In their downtime, she and her friends could almost always be found doing something reckless, and not much has changed in this regard since she started at Durmstrang.

In short, Cielle is an adrenaline junkie willing to do anything for a laugh and the (temporary) feeling of invincibility, for whom the typical scary stuff simply had little lasting effects.

Her fears were more internalised, less known to the world than your typical phobia. Secretly, she was terrified of being left alone, with her loved ones either dying, leaving, or drifting away. No matter how stable and healthy her relationships were, this fear was almost always lurking somewhere in the back of her mind, resurfacing occasionally when things went a little haywire. As a result, Cielle held on tightly to the friends she had and guarded them fiercely, covering up this insecurity with the same old confidence she'd always displayed until it faded into the backdrop again.

Cielle did not see the flaws to her "fake it 'till you make it" method for a while, but when she did, she tried her hardest to change her way of coping with difficult situations and feelings. She'd never been the kind of person to ignore her problems, especially when they became glaringly obvious and were staring her in the face. No, Cielle was the kind of person to charge headfirst towards her problems and tackle them to the ground. A lot of self-reflection was done over the next few months. Cielle tried her best to unpack her insecurities and figure out why her first instinct is always to cover them up, and although she's still not sure about the reasons why she thinks this way, she likes to think that she's taught herself to manage her fears in a healthier and less suppressive way. And it's true - Cielle still has fears, but it's easier for her to face them and talk about it than it was a few years ago.

On the surface, Cielle Johansen was perhaps one of the most stereotypical definitions of the word fearless, with her trademark troublemaking daredevil behaviour, impulsive recklessness, and willingness to rush into dangerous situations for her loved ones. But her courage and bravery runs far deeper than this simple definition, and her ability to deal with her fears is what makes her truly fearless.

Growing up in a circus has taught Cielle more than just cartwheels.

From the day that she learned how to walk, she became an active member of the circus, with her parents sending her out to help out wherever help was needed when she wasn't training. A naturally independent and free-spirited girl, she initially resented being forced into doing random chores and jobs for other people. It seemed to her that Carmen and Filip were just trying to get rid of her for a few hours. However, Cielle eventually realised that this was just how it was supposed to be when you worked in the circus. You lent a hand without asking to be repaid, because if everyone demanded an award every time they helped someone else, nothing would get done. You looked after the others on your team, because if everyone only looked out for themselves, they'd all be dead. She knew that everyone had to play a role and contribute, or the foundations would crumble, and if the foundations crumbled... well, everything else was screwed, too. Having understood this, Cielle no longer complained loudly or dragged her feet when asked to run an errand or lend a hand to someone in need. (Sure, some tasks were still pretty boring, but she held her tongue as best as she could.)

Over the years, Cielle developed a "teamwork makes the dream work" mentality. She became very good at spotting someone's weaknesses, either physical or mental, and learnt how to adapt plans quickly to accommodate their weaknesses as well as playing to their strengths. It was a shame she didn't like Quidditch, because such a skill may have been useful in this team sport. Nor did she have many friends to focus on in the first year or so at Durmstrang. However, meeting and befriending Johannes Sauer at the end of her second year kickstarted the practice of her people-analysing skills again, while also enhancing them. Afraid to lose the one friend she'd made in the two years she'd spent at this godforsaken school, Cielle kept a close eye on him, trying to keep him from harm as best as she could and doing her best to help him heal if he did get hurt. It was the least she could do, especially since he also looked out for her (although he was definitely better at it).

Recently, Cielle has also become relatively proficient in basic first aid. Due to being benched for a lot of the circus performances whenever she returned home for the holidays, she started learning from the various medics involved with the circus out of boredom and in an attempt to feel useful. Cielle picked it up surprisingly fast, and her role in the circus has blended into a combination of backup trapeze artist and medic. Her ability to tend to minor injuries has carried over into her time at Durmstrang, as her adventures with Johann never finished without bruises, sprains, and the like. Furthermore, Johannes' own newfound interest in healing has given them much to discuss, from the content in Muggle biology books pinched from second-hand book shops to conversations about the mechanics and uses of healing potions.
