It had been a long day

Rosy entered the Slytherin and groaned loudly; the first years had been piled by homework. "It's not like we have to give our O.W.L.'s this year or anything," said Emma, her best friend. "Why are they pressurizing us so much?" "I don't know," replied Rosy, nonchalantly. "How will I ever finish 3 essays, 2 diagrams and practice 2 spells by today?" Emma complained.

But Rosy wasn't listening, her attention wandered away to the corner of the common room, where she saw a girl sobbing quietly in her robes. "Hold on a minute," she told Emma. "I'll be right back." She tiptoed over to the girl but when she saw Rosy, she dashed away and hid behind the sofa.

"It's OK," said Rosy. "You can come out." But the girl didn't budge from her place. Rosy slowly squeezed into the little space behind the sofa besides the girl. The girl looked up and moaned and let out a sob at the same time. "What do you want?" she asked miserably and Rosy suddenly got a feeling as if she had violated the girl's personal space. Regardless, she tried to make the girl feel better.

"Hey, there," she said weakly. "I'm Rosy, a first year. I was just doing my homework when I saw you here and I thought that there was something wrong and decided to come comfort you," she continued truthfully. "Why do you want to comfort me? I don't even know you," said the girl. "I don't know. I guess I just want everybody to be happy. Now come here and tell me about yourself and what's going on," said Rosy.

But the girl didn't move and started talking in a very quiet voice so Rosy had to lean in a bit to listen to her. "It's my grandma," she said. "She was very sick until a few days ago. She was admitted in the Muggle hospital until a week ago, when she was finally discharged and came home. The doctors said she was fully treated and fine. I was thrilled to hear the news."

"Well then there's nothing wrong, is there?" asked Rosy but the girl shook her head. "The doctors said she was fine, but she wasn't. A few days ago, sh-sh-she g-g-got a heart attack and she p-p-passed away." The girl began crying once more and Rosy felt bad for the girl, she loved her grandma a lot too and would hate to lose her.

"Well, I can understand your pain, but I'm sure your grandma must be watching over you from above and she wouldn't like it to see you were crying now, would she?" said Rosy. "N-n-no, sh-sh-she wouldn't," replied the girl. "Exactly well then come along, wipe your tears, and you didn't tell me your name?" "It's Cassandra," the girl replied.

"Great, then come on Cassandra, cheer up" said Rosy. Cassandra laughed slightly and said, "Thank you for comforting me, Rosy" and she walked away looking very happy.

But there was one thing Rosy couldn't understand. Until a minute ago, Cassandra was crying and now, she was laughing like ever before. Sure, Rosy had comforted her but how could she be so happy all of a sudden. "Mood swings, I guess?" she thought to herself as she returned to her desk to begin on her essay, not knowing that the real reason for Cassandra's sudden happiness was just her own presence

Derek had always been majorly horrible at Charms, which had been disappointing to his family, as they were all prodigial with their charm work, which his siblings always reminded him when it was summer break. This year, he was going to prove them all wrong.

He had begun with the libraries, though it was also a roundabout way of ‘getting out of the house for vital exercise you’ll thank me for when you’re an auror.’ Derek had rolled his eyes and strolled to his friend’s who was also a witch. Her mother was big on her getting an extensive education , so she had bought Bree her very own magical library.

Derek had told them about his need, so they weren’t surprised when Derek had brought a bag of his mother’s old textbooks and child time favorites from second year to seventh. “Okay, so if we’re going to have any hope of getting through these, you have gotta help.” He thumped down a heavy volume and started reading. Bree held her head in her hands. She thought she was done with reading, at least in summer! But she grudgingly agreed to help too, opening one of the crusty volumes and actually reading it.

After a while, Derek noticed it was getting late, so he bid her farewell and went home. He stayed up all night, his mind anlyzing and going through the extensive information given to him. Swish like that, then flick up there. Lo-COmotor not LocoMOtor. Visualize visualize visualize…

In the morning, Derek realized he had only slept a wink. He had finally went to sleep at 4 in the morning, and now it was already six o’clock! “Mo-o-o-orning Time! Time for waking up no-o-o-ow!” cried the obnoxious cuckoo bird his sister Emily had enchanted at school.

Derek started to complain about it, but she insisted it had a gentle soul and innocent ears and that he shouldn't say such words to it. Just then, she was frozen, and then suddenly, a yak appeared. It bleated and looked indignantly up the stairs. Derek looked up and saw his over-age brother grin, holding his wand in the Bosmos, Human-to-Yak spell stance. Wait…how did I know that?Derek shook his head. It must be a coincidence.

Later that day, his father started to test him on magic, to see if he remembered the Charms lessons.
“What is the incantation for the fourth year Age Line Spell!”
“Aetas Terminus.”
“What is the common fire spell’s advanced version!”
“Incendio Duo.”
“How do you turn a human into a yak!”
“Bosmos.”
Just then, his sister Emily turned into a yak again. The whole house laghued.
When Derek went to bed that day, he realized something.

He was good at Charms.

This is the Way
Ability: Advanced Casting
Why it fits:
Reducio
As a typical muggle boy, Gavin loved to play video games. His favorite games were fantasy RPG games - and his favorite character was ALWAYS the mage or battle wizard. Gavin didn’t know it then, but he was drawn to the magical characters because of his magical abilities. When he got to act out his characters something just felt right - like this wasn’t really a game, but who he was.

When the professor from Hogwarts came to the house to explain everything to Gavin and his parents he - and them - started to look back at his life, and realize that the odd things that happened around him were actually magic. The first of which was a protective charm he had cast as a toddler when he was attacked by a dog. The knowledge that he was a wizard also seemed to explain (at least to Gavin) why his games playing as a battle wizard seemed more like reality to him than his everyday life.

When Gavin purchased his wand at Olivander's, the wand felt more like an extension of his arm, rather than a tool to use to do the magic. It was that feeling at Olivander's that really told Gavin that this was was the one for him. In the video games that Gavin played there was always supposed to be some deeper connection with the wand, staff or other arcane focus and the user, this was exactly what Gavin noticed with his wand. The more time that he spent holding and practicing with his wand, the less the wand felt like a tool to be used, and rather as an extension of his mind and will.

This new found connection with his wand spurred Gavin on to more study and practice. The more he practiced and studied the deeper his connection to his wand felt. It was not until he actually got to Hogwarts that he noticed the difference that this connection made. The first day of Charms class the professor had the class practice for the first time. The rest of the class spent most of the class trying to get their incantations right, and the movements in just the right fashion. But for Gavin the movements seemed to come second nature to him as he purposed in his mind that he was going to cast a spell. The incantation would form clearly in his mind, and come clearly from his mouth, then as he flourished his wand, he noticed that it almost seemed like the wand made sure he moved it in just the right fashion to get the best power from the incantation.

He also noticed that while the others seemed to have issues getting the spells to work properly, but he did not seem to have this issue. His incantations would come quickly, and the spells would have the same power as if he had been performing this type of magic for years. It seemed to Gavin, that with his love of study and practice his wand was truly becoming a part of him and would act instinctively just as he wanted it. There was a special connection he had with his wand - maybe he was making it up, and just thinking about it in terms of video games, but it seemed to him that his wand was more S type than C type. This connection, combined with his study and practice, seemed to make his spells that much better and more powerful - just like he would write all of his gaming wizard characters.

- Thank you for making your application longer, but I do not see how the point above was answered. Your application still states "But, for Gavin, for some reason the movements seemed to come second nature to him as he purposed in his mind that he was going to cast a spell." Could you explain it more? You could say he spent a lot of time practicing, reading, that his background with video games fueled his interest for magic and thus he studied a lot... etc!

Ability: Prodigal Astronomy Learner
Why this fits my character:
Reducio
Corvus was always a naturally curious child. Always asking questions and always interested in the universe. She wanted to know everything that was there to discover she constantly read books about physics, astronomy and astrophysics, she often even stole books if she couldn't have them and she was often found in the night laying on the roof of her old school building and stargazing, even though she didn't possess a telescope. Her abilities have always been neglected by others, but she didn't care if anyone recognised her, she just wanted to learn as much as she could. She always wanted to satisfy her curiosity, but the more she learned, the more she realised how little she knew. It was an endless cycle.

Once, she got scolded for climbing up to the roof of her old school for stargazing. She received detention the next day. She was drawing constellations and writing some smaller calculations to one paper. Sometimes other children would make fun of her for these habits she had, but Corvus never bothered.

The older Corvus got, the more she learned. She has always been fascinated by the stars, planets and black holes. She read so many books and discovered so many things in advance, that as she came to Hogwarts, she was ahead of her peers. The first class in Astronomy came to her with ease. She did the exercises faster than the other children and got all the answers right. But how many questions she asked... So many, that after a while her peers got slightly irritated by her. Even though the question she asked weren't stupid, in fact, to some, not even the professor knew the answer. The fact that she was very good at mathematics added to her ability that she could easily learn physics and explain phenomena easily.

With her Herbology books in her leather book bag, her sidequests to explore most of what was allowed to her within the Hogwarts grounds led her to start collecting samples and clippings of what she found most interesting, comparing them to the sketches and drawings within her books. She had spent some of what she had left on a Journal, listening attentively in classes and spending her time after hunched over a plant in the greenhouse, beads of sweat dripping down her brow as she avidly sketched the details of leaves and blooms. Plants that could deafen, trees that could produce a multitude of fruit in distant lands, her list of wishes grew longer as she realised the highlands displayed nothing of the rich flora that the wizarding world contained, or perhaps she did not know how to look at the time.

Too many of her entries resulted in more questions than answers. Sadie never really had any qualms with eating strange herbs, nor the plants that littered the highlands. Once she had been far too tempted to try one of the blooming fruits in Greenhouse one, ripe and red like a cherry, she had such a stomach ache that all she managed to scrawl while feeling quite sorry for herself in the hospital wing was 'not like the cherries back home.'. She became far more cautious of what she decided to nibble on further on, double-checking a book twice, perhaps thrice if she was unsure or asking a student meekly if she could simply try a bite, ignoring the bewildered stares of one or two students as she crouched with her hands on her knee caps, her wild hair tangled with dirt and twigs.

Her favourite discoveries were ones she found outside of the greenhouse. Unsure whether to tread into other greenhouses, she mostly perused the grounds to see if she could find any particular plants outside of the reach of her first-year restrictions. It felt like the fantasy books she read at home, a brave wizard exploring the lands to refill her many concoctions and vast encyclopedias back home filled with information of discoveries. She never ate those, no matter how tempting they may be, but she always stuck the clippings into her bag, hands stained with ink and dirt when she ventured back to her dormitories or a class, accidentally smudging her already dishevelled books, face and robes, much to the chagrin of her professors.

Before she was enrolled into Hogwarts, there were quite a few lessons that Violetta had on her plate. Etiquette lessons with Mrs. Rosetta—whose classroom smelled a bit too strongly of rose-scented dusting powder—that involved a lot of curtsying and learning to 'enunciate your words like a proper lady'.

She found it inane that there were lessons dedicated to learning how to sip your tea properly in the presence of guests and setting a table for one occasion or another, but it wasn't like she had much choice in the matter. As the days went by, she leaned into it, and realized that she could use some of these skills to her advantage in the future.

She still hated it when Mrs. Rosetta would bark "Sit up straight! Shoulders back! Chin up!" when her or one of the other girls got caught slouching in class, though.

Then there were the private Ballet lessons with Ms. Fleury, who was quite a bit too strict when it came to the art of dance. Ms. Fleury was an older woman with a thick French accent and a bun tight enough to take a few years off of her stern face. Violetta had known her since she was old enough to walk, and even to this day—to put it in terms Mrs. Rosetta had taught her to use—she found her to be a woman of... iniquitous social standing.

That didn't mean her classes were a waste of time, of course. Because she started so young, she was able to advance fairly quickly, even if there were some days where she did nothing but sautés and chassé exercises to the timing of the music. Since a lot of her time was often booked up by an assortment of classes, tutoring and lessons on top of school, she didn't get much of a chance to exercise outside of Ballet.

If her parents hadn't decided on ballet being one of the skills of choice to develop as she grew, she may very well have become... physically unfit. Such a fate wouldn't do, especially not for such an upstanding girl like Violetta. Oh, she couldn't bear to imagine herself becoming that way!

As the years went by, she found herself moving with a kind of grace about her, as slight as it was. Spinning on the ball of her foot to turn rather than clumsily placing each foot around the other, flourishing her hand to reach for something high rather than stretching it out like anyone else might do. Even if she never intended to, she always found herself turning the heads of her peers just by moving as she was taught.

Yes, Violetta Greene was someone one could describe as being gracious, both in act and in poise. A well-timed tucking of the hair behind the ear, and the well-placed shine of a pearly smile, she could very well catch an eye or two.

One could even say she was a bit of a 'Charmer', indeed.

Describe why this fits your character:

To most people, the world just rushed and roared past. But to this boy with one blue eye and one green, it was a system of repetition and hushed cadences. Peering from a shaded recess of the training fields, the cold highland air tickling the skin at the back of his neck, he didn't simply see a spell or a target. He saw the way the wind curled around the stone battlements, the precise second the sparrow stilled its flight. His fingers, in a four-count rhythm, tapped his wand - a skill honed over many years of taking apart radios and clocks simply to admire how the pieces fit together. This wasn't just casting; he was composing a moment. The urge to deconstruct and reassemble, not simply an annoying quirk, allowed his magic to connect with the environment around him. The faint silver scar on his hand served as a reminder that energy-whether released from a stove or from a wand-required patience and attention. He'd seen, as a child of six, a stone hovering suspended in the air, completely defying every law of physics he'd known growing up in a sterile neighborhood. It hadn't simply floated up; it was suspended in a crack of reality that he intuitively felt. As a student, he still sought that same precise moment: while others contented themselves with the "swish and flick" of their wands, he measured the beats of his heart between the utterance of each word and the expulsion of casting magic, waiting for the ideal time when the intended effect and the physical state of the world aligned. His mind catalogued sensed the exact same way a librarian would have catalogued books: he saw the precise angle that the sunlight struck the dust mote, and adjusted his wand by miniscule increments to align the magical effect; this was not the product of serendipity, but skillful casting- his mind forever seeking the point of instability. The precision of his words was a mirror to that of his wand-work. Each syllable he uttered had to be the correct frequency for the circumstances at hand; one correctly-pitched utterance of a word was what transformed a fizzling spark into an roaring blaze. His innate obsession with rhythms, patterns, and mechanical precision rivals the requirements of magic. His ability to perceive underlying physical sequences allows him to master spell structures and casting efficiency far beyond his peers.

Describe why this fits your character:
'Hmm...what to do for you?'
Emil often found that they enjoyed puzzles and riddles, and they found a way to turn almost anything into a puzzle. A missing marble from the Scovich childrens' communal toy collection? A mystery to be solved! Mum and dad were coming home late and Emil wanted to make dinner? Why, that was just a riddle, of sorts! For some reason, it was the best way for Emil to understand the world around them.

However, the hardest riddles for a young child like Emil were ones about emergencies - and what to do if someone tried something nefarious. After all, the Wizarding World was not always a safe place, and the Scovich family made sure their children knew the basics: be careful around strangers, never accept anything that could be charmed, be careful with any Weasley Wizard Wheezes' products, and so on and so forth. Above all else, the Scovich family taught Emil that their first goal should always be to run and get away.
'But what if that wasn't enough?'
The idea of being confronted with someone intending harm was certainly terrifying, and so - in true Emil fashion - they turned the concept of self-defense into a puzzle. If someone was simply trying to grab them, what could they do to slow them down? If someone were brandishing a Muggle weapon, what was the best strategy to disarm them? If another witch or wizard came after them with a spell, what was the fastest way to draw attention or disorient the enemy enough to disengage?

Of course Emil never cast actual spells for this - of course not! Never! However, the statutes against underage magic never quite harped against the concept of pre-emptive learning of magic...or hypothetical experimentation. Maybe they weren't allowed to cast spells yet, but who could truly blame them for other types of experimenting? So what if they tried to empirically catalog the responses a boggart may have to 'non-magical blunt force applications' via their mother's trusty bat from her own days as a Quidditch Beater at Hogwarts? And what truly was the harm in Emil keeping a two-week long study on 'potency of magical household kitchen ingredients as self-defensive measures' (completely mischaracterized by their older brother and sister as 'homemade pepper spray')? And if the occasional book on Defense Against the Dark Arts from their siblings' old school supplies throughout their school years mysteriously ended up in their possession with entire chapters filled with notes totally not in their own handwriting...well, so be it! The resulting lectures about 'safety' always seemed to be counter-productive to Emil. They were simply perfecting ways to keep themself and the family safe.
Self-defense, after all, was just another puzzle to solve - and Emil refused to be left without possible answers.

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: Comprehend Languages
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):

Before her arrival to Hogwarts, Corrine had spent who knows how many years only surrounded by her family. To say that she was alone would be an utter lie, as her family had loved her very dearly and made sure she knew everyday, but to say that she didn’t feel the sting of loneliness would also be a lie.

The harsh truth was that there’s nobody else outside of her family for her. She knew people, became acquaintances with them, but she would hardly call them friends. After all, friends sought each other out and enjoyed their company. Her peers, the other kids in the town. . they would do no such thing. They acknowledged her, occasionally asked for her help, but they didn't do much else. There were no invites to birthday parties or sleepovers, no requests to her family about possibly hanging out.

Little substance, as it were.

Although disheartened, Corrine just wanted to understand. She wanted to know, what about her was so different that they decided she was not worth their time beyond being of help? The girl knew she was shy; there’s no avoiding that, but she also knew that she’s not in any shape or form mean. She didn’t make fun of people, didn’t tease them or bully them. She did her best to be kind, even as her heart ached from loneliness.

She never did get the chance to do that. Instead, she put her effort into researching the body languages of different animals. It was fascinating how, despite the fact that none of them could speak, their body language spoke for them, and it spoke plenty. It’s just humans who couldn’t understand, which she realized quickly.

Humans have gotten so used to focusing on the way they communicate with each other that they’ve forgotten how to learn how others on this earth do, and she found that saddening.

When she finally reached Hogwarts, it’s like her world was painted with so many colors she’s never seen before in her life. So many doors had opened to her, but she couldn’t help but zero in on one specific aspect of the Wizarding World: the magical creatures.

Magical creatures were just as interesting as the animals she had put so much of her life into reading about, if not even more. The difference was, not every one of them relied on just their body language alone. That face made Corrine incredibly giddy, and before she knew it, she was scouring books left and right, whether having to buy them or by basically living in the library.

Her insistent research led her to so many goldmines; even despite the numerous languages that perhaps wizards or witches themselves do not know about, several wonderful ones have already been documented. Goblins, merpeople, even trolls of all beings!

With a determination that overcame her limited time, Corrine threw herself into understanding the Mermish language. In part due to her fascination with the ocean, but also due to her interest in the majestical creatures of the water.

She may not understand the people around her very well, but she refuses to remain ignorant to the rest of the world, and she’ll stop at no end to achieve so.

Each burden brung upon Smudge has left a hardened scar that henceforth made her evermore stronger. Compared to the other students at every one of muggle schools she attended, she was at least 4 inches taller than most of her classmates and beared hardened muscles far greater than there’s. When it came to combat, Smudge never wanted to be the one left in the dirt. It was almost instinctive of her to know how to defend herself against mortally anything that may come her way. Each time Smudge gets into a fight, it psychologically pulls her back in time to the once scared girl who was just getting picked on and wanted to prove herself against those who stood in her way.

“Did you hear me?” The girl across from Smudge scoffed, lousily flicking a juvenile finger towards Smudge who now seems unrecognisable to her now. Her hair straightened, as if to hide something, and a wry stature that is far unlike Smudge’s today. Her body is slouched on the floor with her head down, trying not to draw attention to herself in the haze of the other girls surrounding her.

“Smudgie?” She laughed, kicking the shin of Smudge’s far too small pants. “I t— told you! Don’t call me that.” Her gaze is still furrowed to the ground in sorrows whilst she prays it’ll be over quick before she loses herself and her tempter.

“Why not? What if I just LIKE calling you that?” She jeered, stepping back to giggle once more with her friends beside her.

“Rosiette, leave me alone. I’m warning you.”

Rosiette continued to kick Smudge in a repeated motion, it didn’t hurt her. Just anger her more to the brink where she’ll do something drastic. Just a laugh for her and her friends. “Like what? Nobody likes you, if you touch me I’ll get you expelled. So don’t be stupid.”

Smudge raised her head, emitting a stare of permanence to the girl before lifting herself up. Smudge looked down, there was a small distance between their faces as her hands formed a fist before she even noticed.

“It was just a joke, you’re just—.. sensitive.” Rosiette uttered so only her rival could hear. Smudge didn’t want to be a girl growing up too fast, but this world that seems so against her seemed to force it. She stepped back, tying her pressed her into a ponytail as she watched her opponent do the same. There was already a crowd forming before she struck the first hit, but she didn’t care. She’s not one to perform for anyone, god forbid she fights dirty. Smudge’s arm raised to produce a hit to Rosiette’s face. The hit struck her down to the floor easily, but she was never one to give up.

“I— Is that the best you can do?” She forces a laugh, but it’s evident a bruise was starting to form by her eye. “Rosiette, just leave me alone!” Smudge returns, stepping back but being pushed by the crowd further towards Rosiette. The prim-faced girl crouches before rushing towards Smudge, only narrowly missing her. Smudge grabs onto her, bringing her down to the floor with a slick pull before exhausting a final blow to her closed eye.

“Y—YOU LITTLE!” Rosiette grabs up, grasping her hands onto Smudge’s nose before twisting it in a swift motion causing blood to immediately stream, crescenting around her lips. Her vision fades in and out as she lays her finger onto the blood. Through squinted, tear filled eyes she can only narrowly see the encore of colours acting as blood. It didn’t seem to hurt anymore as it flowed to her existing facial injuries from the fight. “What the hell?”

In the wake of her confusion, Rosiette pushes the other girl to the ground as she tries to convince the crowd her bruised face was a sign of victory, not loss. Quickly enough, a teacher broke them up and Smudge had never felt more ashamed. She didn’t want to hurt anyone, she just wanted her own loneliness to stay uninterrupted. Perhaps this would be the first time she would have to leave a school, not due to her father’s debt, but her own actions she caused out of fear. From that day on, Smudge knew that she should never lose a fight again to avoid the wretch inside of her from that feeling from ever recurring again. No matter how she feels inside, she desires needs to be the one on top no matter what.
