Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet Invite Only

Round 5, finally this game was coming to an end. Prat had enjoyed his time spent enjoying the game, but there were some moments he wished he hadn't been made to endure, specially the one with him out in the enemy lines. Not because he was afraid of what might happen, but instead, because he wasn't allowed to do things.

He was only allowed one attack per round when it would've been so much easier to simply run ahead, knock clark on his ass, give him a few kicks that he was sure even clark's team mates would join. After which, Prat could simply frolic back to his own side of the board.

But instead, he was now here, playing this god awful game carefully, abiding by the rules and the rules dictated that he couldn't take Clark's head straight off, He'd probably grow a new one.

In his attempt to attack Clark, he needed to either beat up Blaize, or have the boy move out of their way. Despite that, he kept him as prisoner of war, was previously how most unwanted work went to.

The two bashed their shield and unlike the outcome everyone had expected, Prat wasn't even focused on beating up Blaize, of course Prat had his recent performance he'd considered by getting a martyrdom weapon.

October 2025, Duelling Club
Watching the jumbled movements of the other players back and forth across the chessboard resulted in a quite dazzled Elisa. Her brain, in an effort to impose some order upon this very out of the ordinary chess game, seemed to be wanting to track down the positioning of every player. After merely a few rounds, however, this resolution proved quite impossible and instead lead to in a throbbing headache. If Elisa was familiar with every chess piece's movements, it was beyond her and her very much tired brain's capacity to keep account of all sixteen players. It might have been easier if all pieces had been inert wooden figures.

It was thus that, trying to keep track of everything else going on, Elisa completely forgot about her own actions. For a moment she was a mere spectator, analyzing (or at least trying to) the strategies of the game. It was only when the round had passed, the actions finished, when the third year realised her own staticness.

Instantly she felt -- or at least she thought to have felt -- her teammates' accusing stare on her. Quite ashamed, she bowed her head, cheeks quickly flushing pink. She refocused again on the game before her, weighing which final actions she would choose.

The glare Livia would shoot Black's queen would be nothing short of insidious. It began with just observance. The girl stared at the intimidating opponent in a hopeless attempt to run her off. As Ara neared Livia, Astra and Mahlioz, Livia's expression only hardened. What began as impartial inspection devolved into a hard-as-diamond glower of death wishes as Livia tried to impart the message, watch yourself, to Ara. Sadly, telepathy had never been a talent of hers.

That was not to say she did not perform her duty to her utmost ability. Mahlioz was the King, and Livia was a healing Bishop despite her faulty lack of physical fortitude. Intercession was a gift, a curse; something Livia grasped she ought to implement even if she could not work to the prowess Elisa had shown earlier. It must have worked, must have worked some.

Ara drew nearer still and exuded an aura that escorted exhaustion towards the young Slytherin. Livia was unable to maintain her mask of nonchalance and instead nearly sneered at Ara, hands coming up in either a 'don't shoot' or 'come at me bro' gesture; even she herself could not discern which. She really didn't have any options. Not unless she wanted to shove Astra out of the way, which, given her lack of bodily buffness, was hardly a possibility. The other option was running into Ara – also decidedly out of the question. Thus, Livia stood tall like a particularly irate, worse-for-wear statue... albeit one that, if it were to remain within the queen's aura for much longer, might topple over.

"Excellent," Astra responded. "We'll hang in there together. Can't be too hard."

Encouragement. Not Astra's strong suit, but she tried! E for effort. And encouragement.

And boom, another shot blocked. Ara had seemingly channeled every negative emotion she'd ever had in all her life into a cloud of doom, and from within that thundercloud she was loading up to attack. However, Astra once again followed her instincts (there was no target to accidentally intercept this time) and dashed in front of Mahl, prepared to take it. It would hopefully hurt less coming from an opponent. Maybe I should pursue a career in security. I'm pretty damn good at this.

Luckily, Astra's presence in the spot and her excellent stare down tactic seemed to deter the Black Queen from shooting her deadly shot at the White King.

Ara moved, and her cloud of intimidation moved with her, and Livia was caught in her vicinity. Oh dear. Astra tried to catch the young bishop's attention, to ask with her eyes alone "Need a rescue?" Whether that meant punching Ara or giving Livia the "better shots" treatment from earlier, Astra didn't know, but the snakelet wasn't looking to great under the oppressive magical aura of badness.

Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive today

Watching two Black Bishops launch their attacks toward midfield while completely ignoring his existence was quite the experience. Mamori's earlier panic about being swarmed by enemies now seemed rather overblown. However, in fairness, Landon did signal and grin at him before striking — if that was the way of saying "don't worry I won't hit you in this round" then it was rather nice of them, he supposed.

Amidst the barrage of spells and Camilla's announcements, their team managed to take down the Black Knight who had given Mamori such grief earlier, while maintaining a surprisingly pristine condition themselves. One point up already. Just like that, his bruised ego wasn't so bruised anymore, his aching muscles decided they weren't actually that tired, and the world wasn't ending after all.

The unmistakably first-year-shaped kiddo among Mamori's three viable target, nameless and distinctly isolated from everyone else in the match, practically self-volunteered for what was going to happen next. The combination of the nice crunch of the hit and the pure euphoria of thrashing an underclassman with zero repercussions was enough to convince him he needed to join more of these events. Nothing like terrorizing small children and calling it sports.

He used this energy to hatch a wonderful plan to single-handedly shoot the shortass king but instead found another first-year-sized girl suddenly appearing to block his way. Mamori clicked his tongue. His grand scheme to end this match right here, right now, was shot down. However, noticing another white knight conveniently coming from the side did lift his spirits quite a bit. It is a mystery how the said teammate managed to come out completely unscathed from the chaos of the midfield but that hardly mattered now. With a menacing child-hunting grin, he directed his words to both his fellow hunter and their cornered prey: "Oh look, fresh meat."

She might have watched the Black Queen a little longer than she had planned to, attention snagging on her somewhat morbid fascination. How did she carry it so well? It was in the extended moment of watchfulness, and then the tumbling realization that their Knight in the middle of the board was surrounded, quite possibly doomed, and very much out of range of either Black Rook, that Aislin forgot what she was meant to be doing. The movements of her teammates and opponents seemed more pressing for just long enough that she lost her window to really think about where to move, and she took a regrettable step to the side. Instead of lining herself up for anything, she was pretty sure she'd just stranded herself, a distant piece on a checkered sea.

Their Knight, in the meantime, had gone down, which seemed a sort of staple of games and sports at Hogwarts. She would have to ask if Muggle sports were like that, too, but she was pretty sure they were not. It was rather brutal, and certainly unfortunate for their Knight as well as their odds of winning, and Aislin wondered what it felt like. She didn't really want to know, though it might be inevitable--her first duel was coming up and she knew she wasn't ready for it--but at least for today, she might not find out. The game's end was near.

It seemed that this round, Aodhan was proving to the world just why he was an absolute (self-diagnosed) legend.

He'd always been quick, not just physically but mentally, capable of lightning fast quips (regardless of their actual quality) and general ideas that assaulted his brain on a daily basis. So to say the least, he instantly saw an opportunity after his queen left an enemy knight barely upright, and he was not kind enough to let it go.

"Nope!" he exclaimed, paired with an immediate hit towards the girl that—

“Ava is KO!”

Oh. Absolute music to his ears.

At that, a grin found its way to his face, wide and toothy in his typical way. He would have opened his big, obnoxious mouth again too if not for the double strike aimed in his direction. Really sucky of them, to be honest. But he could understand! He'd do the same in their position. Unfortunately, though, the speed of their assault was nothing compared to the large, horrifying upper years in quidditch that launched bludgers and bodies towards his cute, cute face.

After ducking and tilting to the side, both attacks whizzed right past his head. This time around, he didn't miss attaching commentary upon righting himself.

"Ha! Wanna try that again?" he questioned, smiling far too wide for his own good. "You guys get Super Saiyan, and I get Ultra Instinct!" Once more, he forgot that most people at Hogwarts would know nothing of muggle media. He might as well have been speaking gibberish.

Her neck almost snapped towards the direction Ava was. Welp, she was gone.

Anyways, Ara focused most of her attention on the few white pieces in the corner. Fine, only 1 was really affected by her new move but she was awfully close to them -- especially the king -- either way. She saw one of their rooks put both hands up as if they were getting arrested, which earned only a crooked smirk from her.

Man, was this getting enjoyable. Too bad there was only one round left. She was really filling in the role of the black queen, aura-maxxing.

The shadows curling around her boots thickened, rising and falling like living mist. Ara took another deliberate step, eyes never leaving the pale outline of Mahlioz -- the White King. She could feel the resistance in the air, the way the board’s magic crackled between their teams like electricity before a storm.

Somewhere to her left, Maisie’s voice wavered through the chaos—something between a gasp and a frustrated curse. Landon was calling a counterattack, Prat was laughing about something (he always was), and Blaize, for all his first-year nerves, was holding his ground. Ara’s gaze flickered over them all, momentarily softer, before sharpening.

She turned her head just enough to glance at Landon, catching his uncertain look from across the board. The smirk she gave him was brief but real, not like the one she gave Livia a few moment before. It was the last round now.

Last round. They had one more round to go, and the game would be over. It was decidedly shorter than the duelling she was familiar with, but obviously ten million times more complicated, because Mahlioz was once again lost. It was a good thing she was such a useless piece in terms of movement and actions. She would need at least another fifteen rounds to get the hang of what on earth was happening. Not that she suspected she would last that long. Gods, she was exhausted and it hadn't even been five rounds.

Ava Winchect was KO - the first person out so far. Though Mahlioz couldn't tell who had done it, they let out a "Nice!" nevertheless hoping Ava was okay. (Why were there so many A-names? They were getting rather confused with Astra, Ara, Ava, Archer...) Spells kept flying, people kept moving, Astra kept being Mahlioz's bodyguard, Mahlioz kept being immensely grateful and not sure how to communicate it (or whether it would be weird to communicate it at all. As it turned out, stress turned their social anxiety all the way up).

Ara kept getting closer. At least they had managed to evade her last round, thanks to Astra, and that first year who was also a duellist on the Headliner - Livia was her name, if Mahlioz remembered correctly. Incredibly, the white team was still intact. But there was still one more round to go - who knew which way the game could tilt.

Clark stared at Blaize and wanted to give him a swirlie. No good reason. He stared at Prat. He watched Astra. He was essentially watching the entire game and all he could think about is how to make them regret life. It didn't matter if they won or lost, Clark wanted them to hate and regret being around him. He wanted to beat them up so badly.

But he was too weak. He was a loser. Pathetic sniveling little toad. That was all he was, and it was all he would ever amount to. He looked over at Camilla and scoffed. For a Hufflepuff, she failed to even set fire to the stage to help out a fellow puff. His eyes rolled back into his head before they came back out to pass judgement onto someone else again. "Let's go." He growled, ready to pounce on someone. Someone was going to go down and Clark? He was going to win. He had to. Someone once said goblins had sharp teeth. Well, his teeth were.. normal. But totally sharp! They weren't.

He threw his Sceptor in the air lightly, just tossing it like he would a baton, before catching it. His whole intention was to intimidate, no matter how stupid and foolish he looked.
