The latest posts are those posts that have been made lately (as it says), mostly up to only a few minutes long, while the unread posts are those threads that you haven't read yet, which could go back to even the beginning of when you first joined

Unfortunately, putting [ code ] [ /code ] inside of one of those doesn't work since it interprets the text as the ending. I would just remove that part and tell your customer to put the [ code ] [ /code ] around the rest of it.
