3 Oct 2025, 20:26If Ara had noticed the way White’s attacks faltered mid-flight, she didn’t show it. Her gaze was locked forward, sharp and cold as steel to each one of them. The black queen position had a sort of aura to it but Ara was there for the dramatic flair. Her presence alone was enough to make attacks swerve off-course, enough to make even some of the older players flinch. That was the point. If they couldn’t strike, they couldn’t win.
Her boots scraped lightly against the enchanted floor as she advanced a square, each step deliberate, measured. She didn’t rush -- Queens didn’t need to.
The attack aimed at her earlier had nearly been perfect -- nearly. She could still feel the heat of the spell that Aodhan had fired, the way it had been intercepted by Aislin at the last second. Ara had met the younger student’s eyes briefly afterward. Not a word was exchanged, but the message was clear: bold. Foolish, perhaps, but bold.
Her lips curled into a half-smirk. “Noted,” she murmured, mostly to herself.
Across the board, the White Queen -- Archer -- had been pushed out of place earlier by Ava. His earlier hesitation hadn’t gone unnoticed. He was talented, sure, but Ara couldn't hide her own smirk when she saw her roommate basically shove them out of the way. Meanwhile, White King, Mahlioz, looked tense, their usual easy composure strained under the mounting pressure. Ara almost felt bad. Almost. This isn't dueling on the same team.
Her legs reached her desired position on the large chess board. A faint hum filled the air as shadows curled up around her feet like eager hounds.
She let the silence stretch, then tilted her head slightly toward the White king, Mahl, who was just a few squares in front of her. “Nice." Ara said softly, voice carrying just enough to reach their ears.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Malcolm who hasn't taken a step since round one move off the board. A part of her wondered why, but her curiosity was satisfied when another person moved in his place.
She was actually caught off guard at actually having to perform a spell. The shield Landon threw at her nearly gave her a heart attack, but she turned to his direction and gave him a thumbs up of gratitude. She still has homework not done, and wanted to be in one piece to give her professors tomorrow. One second she was thinking about her very untimely death, should it happen, the next which spell she should use to attack her opponent in a situation where she most likely would get killed. She raised her wand and shouted a spell at the person next to her, only for him to be replaced in a blink of the eye by someone else. What the hell was going on? Normal chess didn't have that rule. Alas, in all the movement, she missed and they were unscathed. How unfortunate, she really wanted to out some people.
The game was kinda messy, and she sincerely hoped she wouldn't forget the faces of her own team and start attacking them.

Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet
Clark grumbled. He still wasn’t happy. Why hasn’t there been… what was the word that chess geeks used? Chessmate? Why hasn’t there been a chessmate yet! He wanted to win, god damn! The white team needed to go down faster than a sack of dung on fire. Was he going to find a better way to traumatize them? Find a way to haunt them or maybe later fight them and throw them off the stairwells? What could he do to ensure a victory? That was all he wanted.
Clark wondered why he was so far up as well, why he was on the same row as Prat the Dolt, Blaize the Dying Boy, and Aislin the Chip. He knew he shared the team with Aislin and Blaize but as to why Prat was on the same row as him made him feel a little unsettled. That boy would happily hang him off the staircases if he wanted to, or to beat Clark down to a pulp so that he was nothing more than a spineless blob. That much Clark was sure of. He stared ahead and knew he was guarded for the most part, but if they didn’t defend Clark, then Clark might die. No. It was too early for that. He needed to shave a bear and glue the fur onto Prat’s face while he was asleep before he could die.

Prat had begun to lose interest with the game, for a while now, the boy had been stranded behind enemy lines, in a risky endeavor with not much to do for himself. The game had turned into a sitting duck and staring at everyone contest for him if not for the recent actions he had carried only. Only saving grace of this game was the potential smack he was about to lay on @Clark Baird. But then again, if only the stupid idiot blocking his path would move away, Prat could accomplish his task already.
With half the game done, the boy's patience continued to grow thin, he now wished for a re-entry to his dorms and the possibility of catching up on sleep, a chance that was much rarer sight than perfect "Outstanding" grade.
But nonetheless, the boy saw Mamori in vicinity and guessed it wasn't as bad as he was hoping, maybe the center had a plan in mind that'd bring their team the victory and Prat would have his chance to hang clark off a staircase or beat him to a pulp where you couldn't distinguish clark from face or butt.
But, Prat was now quite hungry too...

Mahlioz was a sitting duck in Ara’s (possibly soul-sucking?) line of sight. Luckily for the white team, Livia being Livia, got a shield up on her King. Did she see this coming since last round? Wouldn’t surprise Camilla. Then Astra crashed in, totally pro-level—like she’s got a side gig in magical security, blocking the incoming shot professionally. Camilla made a mental note: if she ever needed personal security, Astra was her first pick.
Just as Ara was terrorizing the corner; so was Archer in the center of the board. Archer went nuclear and let loose a fierce attack at Ava that hit so hard that the Black knight was left reeling. Aodhan, ever the opportunist, seized the moment to charge in with some classic Gryffindor bravado, and... Yep. Camilla had to announce it officially: Ava’s done. That’s what happens when you give the opposition Queen the slightest opening.
“Ava is KO!”
But things didn’t slow down. Maisie and… Seriously, does anyone actually know this new Black Bishop’s name? …both tried to counter-tag Aodhan right after, but that kid can move. Must be all those bludger drills. Aodhan dodged like it was second nature.
Somewhere in all this drama, Landon did successfully land a counter at Archer, but at this point, Black needed much more than that to claw their way back into the game.
Mamori, meanwhile, seemed to be properly thriving in the chaos. He just left Ava for Aodhan, spun around, and slammed the New Bishop. Range, melee, picking targets. Mamori was out there making this look too easy. Future sport captain energy, for sure.
Off to the side, Prat and Blaize squared up, shields crashing. Easy win for Prat, right? Prat’s older, stronger, all that. Except. Nope! Blaize blocked and landed a wobbly counter. Underdog points for days, for that one.
Then. Chaos. Everyone scrambled for the best position: Maisie darted back to cover her King, only to get pincered between both White Knights. Ara kept gliding closer to the White King, her aura now basically radiating “come closer and die.” Livia, in range of the Aura for just a few moments, was looking rough around the edges, life getting leeched right out.
In the center Archer, stepping straight over Ava’s KO’d self (revenge, maybe?) to angle for the middle, only for Landon to shove them right back. Camilla was officially losing track of all the side-grudges.
With the last round looming, every piece looked battered, every attack was desperate. And no one, but absolutely no one, wanted to be anywhere near Ara.

duelling club

As the final round neared, the air grew thick with tension. A lot of things happened at the same, disorienting time (which pretty much summed up the game in its crooked entirety, with all its moving pieces and its overwhelming attacks). However, one thing particularly noteworthy was the state of Ava, who had knocked Archer out of position just the round before. He supposed that was just karma for her.
In fact, Camilla made it her job to announce it with as much grandness as she could muster in one breath. The fist knock-out of the game—if this were a duelling match, it would have been the starting point of where things began to get fun, but this was by far more complicated than Archer’s practice of the martial arts. However, he was not so simply done.
The black queen decided to angle herself in the centre of the stage, still just outside Ara’s deadly aura. Final round, he would be damned if he was going to end up like the unconscious figure he had stepped over. Heart beating at his throat, he looked towards his far-off teammates, not particularly self-assured yet relieved that despite Landon’s hit, he was still going strong. Not to get too hubristic, but personally, Archer Duncan thought that they were doing well.

It was intimidating, to say the least. As Blaize saw Ava, one of their knights fall to her knees before quickly being called off the field. She was an older year, smarter and wiser than himself let alone stronger, yet she was the first to fall. And many others were close behind on both sides. Being one person down had really struck a chord in him. He wasn't sure if they could win but he would try.
Shaking off the stress and looming nature, he'd turn his head to Prat who still stood at his side. Shield incoming! The boy ducked, feeling the metal vibrated through his arms as he barely held on to his flimsy weapon and protection. Swinging with all his might, he'd try to clash with the other Rook, a dull thud hitting his ears as he connected not with metal but they boy's body. Involuntarily he winced, knowing that could've been him had he not been so lucky. It seemed that move really was a wake up call as he moved previously where he had been and Blaize took a step back to regain his balance and attention.
Surveying the rest of the court's move he noticed the centerfold was a lot emptier. Both teams were trying to corner in the other team's Kings, but could anyone land anything at this point? There was one round left, but it seemed everyone's angers were increased ten-fold put into their attacks. His gut hadn't been wrong before, so he knew more people would go down before the curtains closed for the game. All he could do now was breathe and wait.

┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈Her eyes nearly shot out of their sockets when she saw Ava knocked out by the white queen. Never in her 11 years of life did she expect people--her own team to really get done--or KO'd. And now Ava, who was so much older than her, was sent reeling. Those who were older than her by so much were just gone in an instant. She shuddered, but turned her attention back to her part. She couldn't help Ava by staring at an unconscious body, but she could help their team by knocking some people down.
Maisie and the nameless dude moved to counter-tag Aodhan, but he was too quick for even the both of them, and sadly she missed. She cursed herself in her mind. Second miss of the day. What could get worse?
She rushed back a few squares to shield the king as quickly as she could. Out of breath, she looked up, only to see the other two knights on either side of her diagonally. Why, did they think her incapable? "Uh, hi?"
Even though she hadn't the fastest reaction time, she could see how the game could possibly end. Everyone on her team were scattered across the board. She could feel the desperate in the air. How would the game end? With a tie, a fail or with a victory?

Landon took a moment to look around the board before the round started. He was obviously loyal to the Black team for this, but he still smiled and waved a little at Mamori. They were on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team together, so Landon knew him pretty well, but they hadn't interacted much outside of Quidditch. Landon should do something about that. He liked making friends, after all, and the Chaser had never seemed unfriendly. Granted, Landon was only a second-string player so he didn't get to work with Mamori as much in general.
But then the action started again.
Oh. Oh no. Landon's confidence in their team's winning plummeted with the defeat of Ava. They had been doing so well, but the white team managed to take Ava down and increase their chances of winning. Landon watched as Ava went down, grimacing. "Shoot..." he mumbled, fighting the urge to run to Ava's side to make sure she was okay, but if he moved from his place, they could forfeit the game or something. He wasn't really sure what the rules were for that, but he wasn't going to chance it.
Landon quickly did a counter attack toward Archer and smiled a little as it landed. Now he was more of a part of the action, not that he wasn't really part of the action, but he actually got to do something other than protect his other players. He loved the protection part of it, but counter attacking was a bit exhilarating. And then Landon needed to push back Archer after Archer stepped over Ava, so he was still doing his best to help the team.
He looked around again, feeling less confident than he had been before this round had started. He looked behind himself and noticed that the White Team was closing in on Clark, the King for the Black Team, and he bit his lip. Win or lose, this was a good game and Landon was having fun.
