Breaking Free From the Memory
She was running through the alley. “Lucas!” Nora chased him as the hooded figure dragged him farther away out of sight.
“Nora! Help me please!” Lucas tried to break free from his captor's grasp. Nora pushed to go faster, but tripped on some old wood and crashed into a wall.
Nora jerked awake at the sound of her alarm. Her face was coated with sweat as she wiped the sleep from her eyes, cancelling the alarm. She fell back onto her bed opening her locket. There was a picture of her brother inside. Her brother had been missing for six months now. He’d been taken on her watch. “I will find you...I promise.”
She dragged herself out of bed and got dressed. Nora ate a quick breakfast. After eating breakfast, Nora grabbed her keys and left for her car. She drove to her psychiatrist and waited to be called in. She laid on the leather sofa in the small office of her psychiatrist. Dr. Scott was her name. She was a kind young woman.
“How have you been Nora?” She took a seat across from her sitting in an ornate chair. Nora was quiet. Dr. Scott matched her silence.
“I had the dream again..” Her voice cut off a little bit and she swallowed. “May I ask what dream?” Dr. Scott questioned with a raised eyebrow.
“You know what I’m talking about. Don’t act like you don’t. It’s the reason I'm here.” Nora started to get irritated. She hated when Dr. Scott asked that question. It was like after every session Dr. Scott completely forgot about everything they talked about.
Dr. Scott cleared her throat and scribbled something down on her notepad. “It’s not your fault. I know you think it was, but it wasn’t. He’s ok- I mean I’m sure he’s somewhere. Maybe he escaped and found someone or the police.” Dr. Scott cleared her throat again. She couldn’t blow her cover. Not yet, not ever.
“You shouldn’t think of the worst.” She talked quickly hoping that Nora didn’t hear the first of her sentences.
Nora had heard it though. “What do you mean he’s okay? What do you know?” Nora sat up and glared at Dr. Scott.
“I apologise. That’s not what I meant to say. Excuse me. I need to use the restroom.” With that Dr. Scott stood up, closing her notepad, and left for the restroom. Nora paced the room. “What did she mean ‘He’s okay’. How would she know...unless...No I swear to god.”
The door opened and Dr. Scott returned. “Nora, are you okay?” She looked concerned and tried to help Nora sit back down. Nora wasn’t having it and pushed Dr. Scott.
“It was you! You took him!” She sobbed, not from sadness, but from frustration and anger. Dr. Scott stood straight.
“Nora, you’re not thinking rationally.” Dr. Scott stated. Nora pushed her again. Dr. Scott fell against the wall and a locket flew out of her pocket landing near Nora’s feet.
Nora picked it up. She opened it to find her own picture inside. She and her brother had matching lockets with each other’s picture inside.
“Where is h-” Before Nora could finish her sentence she was knocked unconscious.
“Mmmh- ow” Nora groaned as she regained consciousness. She was lying somewhere dark. The cement floor was damp and cold. She forced herself to sit up despite the pounding pain in her head. She pressed her fingers to her temple only to find slightly dried blood there. She looked around, trying to adjust her eyes to the darkness.
Suddenly a light flooded the room and Nora realised she was in a basement. She began to remember what had happened. Dr. Scott had knocked her unconscious and brought her here. Dr. Scott made her way down the basement stairs.
“Oh, you’re awake. I thought I had killed you for a moment.” Dr. Scott stepped in front of Nora. She was no longer dressed in her dress, but now dressed in dark clothes and a cloak.
“What do you want from me?” Nora screamed at her. She tried to stand only to find her hands chained to a wooden post. She struggled against the chains. Only able to move her hands around the space immediately around her she subtly searched for her phone in her pockets.
“If you’re looking for this” Dr. Scott waved Nora’s phone in her hand. “I have it.” Dr. Scott released a low chuckle. “And as for what I want from you...is silence. I can’t have people figuring out that I'm a kidnapper. It’ll ruin my reputation as a therapist. You don’t want that do you?”
“I don’t care what happens to you!” Nora spit violently at Dr. Scott.
“Ugh!” Dr. Scott bent down near Nora and gripped her face tightly. “Disgusting creature you are! Just like your brother!” Nora growled and swung her foot at Dr. Scott, catching her in the mouth. Dr. Scott fell backwards, hands going to where she had been hit as blood flowed profusely.
Dr. Scott cut the chains releasing Nora from her hold. She dragged her, tossing her to a wall. Nora fell to the floor groaning in pain. The room spun for a moment before coming back into focus. Nora stood up trying to gain a balance that never came. Dr. Scott marched toward her and Nora took her chance and swung one of the chains at Dr. Scott.
She dodged and slammed Nora into the wall knocking the air from her lungs. There was a loud snap as her ribs broke. She let out a choked gasp as blood spurted from her lips. She fell back against the wall sliding down to the floor. She looked up at Dr. Scott who was grinning sinisterly down at her. Dr. Scott began walking away. Nora took one more chance and gathered the strength she had left and pushed herself up.
Dr. Scott turned around, Nora swung the chain and caught Dr. Scott in the head. Dr. Scott fell backwards onto the ground with a loud thud. Nora grabbed her phone and dialled 911. “Help...p-please.” She couldn’t hear what was said next. The room spun as she collapsed and everything went black.

Some tips. 1) Background of why someone would kidnap Lucas could use some explaining other than Dr. Scott just saying "I can’t have people figuring out that I'm a kidnapper." Usually, people have a reason for why they would kidnap someone, aka, money, revenge etc...Phoenix Zhang wrote: 14 Jun 2025, 00:36 Here is a OOC story I wrote

2) A lot of your sentences feel like the pace is too fast. It would be helpful, to slow the pace down to put your readers in suspense. A lot of action without plot.
3) Why would Dr. Scott seem so assured of Lucas being "ok" when she treats his sister, Nora, so cruelly? She seemed almost defensive about it as if she cared for him slightly. But then later you state, "Disgusting creature you are! Just like your brother!"
4) The idea of Dr. Scott changing her dress into "dark clothes and a cloak" seems a little cliche, like she's a comic book villain.
5) Why Lucas?
6) How does Scott switch from exasperated to sinister without a proper transition?
7) What are the chances Nora's doctor is the kidnapper? Explain how that aligned so well.
Sorry if this came off as harsh. I hope these tips help!
