April Fools Has Come and Gone
Thank you all those who have celebrated this day responsibly. I have updated the forum and returned the backgrounds to their former glory. The Pink Threat has left us, or at least we no longer have to gaze into those eye-searing colors. There might be other (related) threats on the horizon.
If we have overlooked returning a forum area to its former background, please feel free to reach out. I have also returned the discord names to their original colors, it is no longer a pink parade.

The INPCs have arrived
The NPC arrivals have been forward dated to their arrival date. The time of day mentioned in each of the respective threads in the starter. To RP as an NPC from another school you would need to have a registered and approved iNPC. To RP as a student greeting the NPC, we would need you to be registered with Index because statistical intervention may be necessary in these interactions.

The Duelling Club is proud to announce the next and last stage of this year's Season!
Stage 3 is set to start between the 22nd - 24th of April. This means a number of things and deadlines for duellists. Trunks and Rosters will lock on the 18th, Pairs/Matches will be announced on the 19th, there will be a brief period of 48 hours after that to change partners around within a team as long as they share a League and have the same amount of Stat points.
For you this means that if you wish to include any new ability, stat or spell, apply for the trunk updates as quickly as possible to ensure being able to make use of them.

Godmodding Former Users
This site has a rule against godmodding former users. This being because they have left the site or they have been banned from the site. We ask that players not mention them, write letters to them, or state that they are doing anything any particular. The reason for this is because of informed consent - the user (banned or just gone) has a right to their character and their work/writing. They should be able to state in a place where the staff or community can see it that they give consent. If a user is not on the site anymore, we have to take a user's word for it. It is not appropriate for the staff to verify (or re-verify) that consent has been granted with a user no longer on the site. Further, the user has the right to know what was being said of their character, the context of the situation and if they are no longer on the site because they have left the site or they were banned this would mean that they are expected to check-in to the site they have either left or are no longer allowed to be on. Again, this is not appropriate. Finally, users have the right to withdraw their permission. A user can say "sure, use my character however you want" but at a later time change their mind (for many reasons) and they would need a clear avenue to withdraw their consent. Again, if a user is no longer on the site or was banned from the site, they would not have a clear, official means to do this.
Users that chose to control a former user's character will be treated as godmodding and dealt with as per policy. This is usually a warning initially but can escalate to eventual removal from the community, especially if it is discovered as a tool to harass the staff/community by being "chaotic."

Welcome Octavius Baird, Professor of Astronomy
Welcome @Octavius Baird, father of player character @Clark Baird, Hogwarts.io's newest professor of astronomy. Clark Baird is a tenured member of this community who has undertaken various roles in this community but is best known for their work as a mentor. They have shown incredible enthusiasm for the site and this community so we look forward to seeing him in this new role.
Octavius will be replacing @Farron Horne, played by @Dorian Anderson. Dorian has held multiple staff roles on this site and has demonstrated their skill as a moderator on the sports team. They have done a great deal for this community and we are sad to see them leave, but if history is any indication of what the future will bring, I expect them to return to the staff one day when life (hopefully) slows down. For the interim, please thank them for all of their hard work. We appreciate everything that they have done and hope that they enjoy their time with the player base. They will remain a part of the player community, so we will still be seeing them around so this is not good-bye.
In addition, we have a new nurse as well but I will be providing a separate announcement once I have a name and an account to link the announcement to.

Welcome Emery Featherstone, School Nurse
Welcome @Emery Featherstone, adult account of @Samantha Salwis, Hogwarts.io's newest school nurse. Samantha is a tenured member of this community who has undertaken various roles including Prefect for Ravenclaw (applications are now up for her replacement) and Duelling Captain. They have shown a great deal of thought and consideration for the members of the community so we look forward to seeing her n this new role.
Emery Featherstone will be replacing @Polonius Frogge, played by @George Henry. George has held multiple staff roles and has demonstrated their skill as a Broom Racing Captain of unparalleled brutality. We are not happy to see him go, but he is insistent that he was overworked in the medical wing. We hope to have another opportunity to work with him again. We appreciate everything that they have done for the community and hope they enjoy their time as a player with less responsibility and more time to enjoy the community. They are expected to remain a member of the player community, so hopefully this will not be a good-bye.
Applications are out for a Ravenclaw Prefect so apply if interested. We have just closed our Slytherin Prefect so our next staff announcement will likely have to do with another new addition to the team.

Congratulations to Avery Leveret - who has just become our newest Slytherin Prefect. He has quickly adapted to HiO since his arrival, fast becoming a well-known member in our community. We're lucky that he brings with him a wealth of experience and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month, Better Sleep Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, National Walking Month, and Women’s Health Care Month. May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Military Appreciation Month, so represent.
Relevant to this community, May 2 is International Harry Potter Day, May 9th is National Lost Sock Memorial Day (Dobby will be sad) and May 16 is Honor our LGBT Elders Day. Hopefully this post can serve as a conversation starter through the month. Have a great May.

General PSA regarding Scammers and Phishing
Urgent action- Be suspicious of emails or other messages that claim you must click, call, or open an attachment immediately. Often, they'll claim you have to act now to claim a reward or avoid a penalty. Creating a false sense of urgency is a common trick of phishing attacks. We have had incidents of this on Discord for example.
First time or infrequent senders - It's not unusual to receive an external email from someone for the first time, this can be a sign of phishing. The site prevents unvalidated accounts from ending you owls. We have rules against solicitation so nobody should be sending you owls out of the blue asking for you to go to their shop, asking for a donation, linking you to their private discord or their site. People should not be doing this in your discord either. If you get an owl or a private message on discord from somebody you don't recognize, take a moment to examine it extra carefully.
Spelling/Grammar - If an email message has obvious spelling or grammatical errors, it might be a scam. These errors are sometimes the result of translation from a foreign language, and sometimes they're deliberate in an attempt to evade filters that try to block these attacks.
Mismatched email domains - If the email claims to be from a reputable company, like Microsoft or your bank, but the email is being sent from another email domain like Gmail.com, or microsoftsupport.ru it's probably a scam. Also be watchful for very subtle misspellings of the legitimate domain name. Like micros0ft.com where the second "o" has been replaced by a 0, or rnicrosoft.com, where the "m" has been replaced by an "r" and a "n". These are common tricks of scammers. We filter for and watch for similar names being taken by new members. We have nickname rules on our discord. There is the expectation that you should be able to identify (in terms of who someone is on Hogwarts.io) very quickly.
Suspicious links or unexpected attachments - If you suspect that an email message, owl or discord message is a scam, don't open any links or attachments. Instead, hover your mouse over, but don't click, the link to see if the address matches the link that was typed in the message. Reach out to a staff person, we might be able to help you.
