"Have we met before?"

Those words were enough to make Ashlyn stumble out of her thoughts. She had not met many people during her short "test month", as she called it, here at Hogwarts. Most of the other Gryffindors had just left her alone, not that she had a problem with being left alone. Though last year she had been labeled as trouble by most people, the people she had talked to were not people at all, but animals that she had found during her many days of wandering around the Hogwarts grounds. She had taken a liking to a few of them, especially a small, gray cat, which she had dubbed "Tarou". Yet, here she was, and for some reason, the girl across from her did look strangely familiar. Perhaps they had met in the common room? No, that couldn't be it. The more she thought about who this girl could be, and where they had met before, the more the thoughts swirled in her already clouded mind, and the more she questioned herself. Sometimes, she found questioning her choices to be quite entertaining, and even calming at times, but right now was definitely not one of those times. She easily felt like she could have a mental breakdown at any second, yet still, the vague memory of this girl tugged and pulled at the back of her mind. She couldn't put a finger on it, but she definitely knew this girl.

Houses were being called for the various people's names that were being presented the hat, 'Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw.... Gryffindor,' the hat jeered out in the same boring tone. This gathering of the entire school was something he wasn't too fond of. Large crowds weren't necessarily his thing, but, what was his thing was the food that the house-elves prepared for the opening feast. Although people were joining the table, he paid no attention, however, Zykeal did notice that Ivy was conversing with a few of the students and he didn't mind paying her a glance and offering a small nod of his head in greetings to the girl. The summer was long and he had no ill will towards the girl who confessed her feelings to him during their time in London.

A soft smile accompanied his nod, but, his courteous greeting did not last long as he noticed Piérre not too far away and called out a soft greeting to his former tentmate, "Oy' Piérre, we bunking up this year, right?" he offered, his head cocking to the side as he brought his dominant hand up so that it could rest his elbow upon the tabletop. It wasn't good manners, of course, but Zyk needed his space so that he could twist that ivory-colored wand throughout his fingers as a drummer would a drumstick. This habit hadn't fallen off the Irish boy, in fact, it seemed to become more constant as his obsession with his wand and wands, in general, grew stronger.

The summer had cut more of the pre-teen fat off the boy as well, edging off his jawline and adapting a more fit tone in general. The numerous hikes he endured to collect wood fragments in the nearby national park outside of Dublin seemed to pay off for the aging boy. So far, it seemed that quite a few new Gryffindors had joined the table and Piérre was in the middle of conversing with a few of them, Zyk felt rude to interrupt, but, these ridiculous first years didn't take precedent over his query to the boy to his own year. Even more now, as he looked upon the fresh faces of their household, he still didn't fully believe he was chosen for the right house.

It had been a long while of just sitting and staring at the palms of her hands when Ashlyn decided that she was bored. She knew that she couldn't just walk up to Headmaster Lear or Professor Pendrast and say "Hey, I'm bored and quite anti-social, in case you haven't noticed, so I'm just gonna head up to the Astronomy Tower and talk to a cat. Thanks for your consideration.", and quite frankly, she didn't want to confront her elders in such a disrespectful manner. Although, she was eager to see if her old friend would be waiting for her again as he had done during the short month that she was here last year. She thought more about what she could do to make the horrible monster that was her boredom go away, yet somehow, she couldn't seem to think of a single thing that would accomplish that. Perhaps the reason she couldn't think was because of how many people surrounded the poor girl. The only thing she could ever recall wanting more than some quiet time was sleep, and she seemed to get very little of both during the past few months. That was it! Perhaps, in order to stifle her boredom, she just needed to find more of a quiet place to sit. After some time of searching, she found the perfect spot and proceeded to move to the said area. Of course, there were still a few random people sitting close by, but she was fine by that, as long as they weren't to loud. With that thought, she decided that the windows were the most entertaining thing in the room, and continued to stare at them, almost sadistically, as she wondered what the view was like in the day time.

Incredible it is, really, how much experience can change perspective. It hardly looked any different than the first time she had arrived here with the candles floating high above them, the chatter and excitement of students anticipating start of term reverberating about the halls, and the professors gathered at the head of the Great Hall. Of course, the trek here had been remarkably different. Last time, the journey had been a breath-catching, heart-racing ride by boat across a lake of black glass, the dark silhouette of the castle looming ever nearer only serving to heighten the mystery and trepidation of what would be a momentous induction into a new world. Tonight, they had traveled by coaches that seemed to drive themselves.

While the approach to the castle had been no less impressive, the emotions that had writhed within the core had been driven by an entirely different source. Instead of excitement, she felt a cautious reservation. Rather than wonder of discovery, she felt the burden to explore in order to not be caught unaware. Where the year previous, she couldn't help be nervous about how she would fit into the student body, she now had the obligation of responsibility already on her shoulders and a reputation to continue cultivating. And above it all, the uncertainty of the unknown was still a very real presence. Instead of fear, however, it was a resolve to face it that gripped her.

That could all be cast asunder, however, at least for the moment. The train ride had been long and heavily burdened by a multitude of thoughts. A far cry more enjoyable of a trip than last year, as she had spent it in the company of Woodward, it had still been a long one. What was more, the bundle of nerves had left her unable to eat nary more than a bite that morning, and so she had ravished the packed lunch her mother had given her quite a bit earlier than she ought to have. The pastries from the trolley had left her hardly any more satisfied, finding them too rich to eat in any sufficient quantity. Needless-to-say, her mouth had started watering in anticipation the moment she had entered the hall with the rest.

The new school year had never really before brought with it any feeling of nostalgia. Here, however, surrounded by those in robes of black bearing the familiar crest of the House of Lions, she felt almost as she did on those rare occasions she crossed the Atlantic to visit her family. In a school no doubt riddled still with dangers yet to be revealed, she could at least be comforted in the knowledge that she was surrounded by those with whom she shared a bond: be it shared experience, comrades on the Quidditch team, ties as members of the same House, or something else altogether. This year, she was hardly alone.

Filing in towards the Gryffindor table, she passed more than a few familiar faces. If they happened to have made eye contact, she would have raised a hand to wave and offered a friendly smile towards the likes of Marchonné, Bellamy, and even Lane. As she would to any others in her year or above with whom she had any sort of prior connection. In fact, the moment she had laid eyes on Marchonné, she veered her steps to carry her in his direction. It was a strange feeling, the sense of relief that had come with seeing his smiling face, and she hadn't realized just how much she had missed him.

Before she had quite reached him, however, it was the profile of someone else who caught her attention. With dark curly brown locks cut shorter than it had been for most of the year prior, a relaxed frame, and understated presence, he was still very much the same boy. She'd played and practiced Quidditch alongside him for the better part of half a year, and he'd demonstrated himself to be quite adept on a broom. Perhaps not explosively impressive with feats of flair like their dullard Captain, but reliable and consistent. The sort that was very much under-rated and had the potential to be overlooked to the detriment of anyone who underestimated him. Had there ever been a moment when he was not on Evelynn's radar, however, that moment had been trashed and tossed violently to the winds the moment she had actually taken the time to read through the various questionnaires collected by the Quidditch team members for the Gryffindor Year book.

Before she'd even had a chance to consciously consider it, her mind had been made up. Straying from her path, she fixed it instead on the boy. Already, her hand had reached to pull up the flap of the school bag hanging from her shoulder to retrieve a booklet within. She didn't even need to look at it to find the corner of the page that had been folded over, a finger deftly plying it open to slip between the pages in preparation. Eyes lidded in her approach, shoulders rolling back slightly with the tilt of her head, and as she neared, her expression softened to a flat slate of scrutiny.

"Hello, MacAllister," she greeted to the back of him when she had stalked up just shy of his seat behind him. Another step closed the last bit of the gap between them. "I hope your summer was a nice one?"

A smooth motion had her leaning forward, fitting herself between he and whoever sat next to him, pivoting somewhat so that her back was mostly to the table which allowed her to fully appreciate his expression. With a tilt of her head, she dropped the book to the still-empty feasting surface in front of where he sat. By its cover, it would be clear to him that it was the Gryffindor yearbook.

"Would you mind explaining…" With a flick of her wrist, the finger fitted between the pages flipped it open to reveal the one depicting his interview. The tip of her finger dragged across the parchment, slowly revealing the question: What do you fear most during the game?. "…this?"

It had come to rest on the answer: Evelynn.

Ana didn't want to be at the Gryffindor table that evening. It was loud and full of people and quite honestly, she didn't want to deal with it. She had had a very unpleasant encounter with Eyre earlier that day and was just utterly drained. She had brought her third-year charms textbook since she figured that a book was the next best thing to a neon sign telling people to leave her alone. Occasionally, she would glance up at a new Gryffindor, but for the most part, she was fairly focused on her book. Until the people around her started to chatter. Fairly promptly she realized that one of the many people she was desperately avoiding was sitting a few seats away.

She wondered if it would be noticeable for her to flee the Great Hall. On the one hand, it was loud and she doubted a single third year sprinted away would gather much attention. On the other hand, everyone was sitting and somehow, a person leaping up and making for the doors seemed like something that would garner a look or two. Additionally, there were all the stupid new rules about curfews and traveling in twos, so there was a chance of her being scolded by some professor for frolicking the castle by herself. Biting her lip and squirming slightly, she decided to turn her attention back to her book and desperately pray that Ivy wouldn't notice her.

She was so ready for this day to be over. Not just because of her fight with Eyre or her avoidance of Ivy, but because it had been exhausting. It was the first time in months when she hadn't been able to hide behind locked doors and had actually had to hold herself together. She had done fairly well, all things considered, but it hurt, and somehow she didn't expect it was going to get better. Placing her chin on her fist, she continued to at least appear as though she was intently studying for her first charms class of third year. God, had she been that talkative and annoying as a first-year? Surely not. She shot several venomous looks at younger students, momentarily forgetting her resolve to pass unnoticed by everyone she knew. If she lept across the table and murdered a first year or two, that wouldn't attract attention, right?

To say that Lydea was excited was an understatement. The whole walk to the Gryffindor table from the Sorting Hat, her blood had been thrumming in her veins and her heart drumming in her ears.

It all still felt like a dream. Was this a dream? She hoped not, and bit her tongue to check (she'd already pinched herself awhile ago). The harsh sting of pain confirmed that, yes, this was real, and yes, she was really here.

Dea had never thought something like this could be real, never mind that she could be part of it all. For once, the hot-headed, fast-talking, bullet-out-of-a-gun girl had been quieted, both verbally and mentally as she took in her surroundings. The floating candles, the ceiling that was the sky, the refilling goblets with no hands attached or pitchers pouring. All of it, all so unimaginable, and yet here, and real, and tangible.

It felt like something out of a Disney movie.

She took a shaky seat next to an older girl, practically vibrating where she sat. She didn't fail to notice the girl's rather...angry looks directed at the newer students. And of course, everything that she'd been shocked about just moments ago flew out the window as her mouth opened. "Well, that's not very welcoming," she muttered, before reaching over the table for a goblet of apple juice. "I mean it could be worse. Someone could start a food fight. Did older students look at you like that when you sat down across from them? Because that's, like, kind of rude."

And there it was. The impulsivity and lack of thought before speaking. Words just tended to float out of Lydea's mouth without the thought of consequences. Her ma constantly scolded her for her smart mouth, and her da would just laugh because "well, she got it from me, I guess" was all he'd say.

As she walked down the Gryffindor table Cosmo's eyes travelled across the sea of people spread out before her, and tried to pick the best place to sit. Everyone was chattering to their hearts content, and while it was good to see so many excited faces the cacophony of voices made it very hard to think about seating arrangements. Cosmo blinked slowly, dazed by the smells and colours and sounds. Eventually she picked out one of the quieter spaces, between an older student who was reading a textbook, and a pretty girl her age with pink hair who was staring wistfully out a window.

Cosmo sat with a relieved sigh, and after a few steadying breaths she took in the general hubbub. Lots of people seemed happy to see their friends again, but not so happy to see the first years. The more she listened the more Cosmo began to realise that most older students found the first years a pain, and she made a mental note to only talk with people her own age.

After gathering herself briefly, Cosmo started loading her plate with steamed vegetables, mash and salmon. The smells were making her mouth water, and she was glad that she hadn't completely gorged herself with sweets on the train.

Just as she was tucking in a bouncy red headed girl came and sat a seat away, on the opposite side of the older student. Apparently she had picked up something Cosmo didn't because soon after she muttered,
"Well, that's not very welcoming,"

Cosmo's head shot up to watch how the older student would take it, and the red head continued, "I mean it could be worse. Someone could start a food fight. Did older students look at you like that when you sat down across from them? Because that's, like, kind of rude."

By the time she finished talking Cosmo was in awe of her bravado, but concerned that a fight was about to break out between the two. Despite her previous resolution she decided to jump in before the older student became angry. She cleared her throat to get both student's attention.

"It's okay to be tired you know," Cosmo addressed the third year, trying for an amicable tone, "just maybe don't take it out on others?" she shot a smile at the red head then, admiration in her eyes.

Ivy was still trying to place the pink-haired girl when Scarlett spoke again. Her grey eyes widened and she jolted forwards slightly at the thought that they were so close to third year. How quickly time seemed to have passed... "Well, my parents will forbid me from taking Muggle Studies, I know that already," she noted with a dry laugh and a shrug of her shoulders. Ivy's dislike for her mother and father was evident in the way she spoke, putting an emphasis on the word "parents" and stabbing her fork aggressively into a penne pasta. "You know," she added, eyes flicking upwards from her plate to glance at the redhead for her reaction. If she recalled correctly, the Adens weren't quite as obsessed with blood purity as the Bellamys were, but it was still an important part of their lifestyle.

"Study of Ancient Runes would be rather interesting," Ivy mused, moving on from the topic of blood purity in case an oversensitive first year heard them and started crying or something. "I suppose I'll be taking that, then. I'd rather stay away from Divination if I can, because it honestly all sounds rather silly..." She paused to take a sip of water, casually taking another look around the Hall--- and choked. No, it was not because of Zyk, who had sat down next to Pierre and looked immensely disdainful of the first years, although her heart had given another squeeze as she noticed his presence. It was because of Ana, who appeared to be trying to hide behind a book. "I'm so sorry Scarlett, I'll be right back," Ivy apologised, already halfway out her seat.

Two first years had already beat her to it, and were already pestering Ana. Ivy caught bits and pieces of the conversation as she moved closer, and decided that she hated the two girls already. They sounded like stereotypical Hufflepuffs, with all of that "that's not very nice" and "it's ok to be tired" crap... geez, where the hell had all the Gryffindors gone? Ivy wasn't sure they belonged here, amongst the lions. Maybe the Sorting Hat was getting old. It was clear that the hat could no longer be trusted.

"Oh, for Christ's sake, you two need to shut the fuck up," Ivy said rudely, standing behind the group. She used one hand to gently push the redhead (Lydea) to one side and slid next to Ana. "That's like, kind of rude," Ivy mimicked the girl, tone sarcastic and mocking. "Can you not see that she wants to be left alone? You really ought to mind your own business, you know." The second year turned to face the other girl (Cosmo), sharp grey eyes narrowed. "You as well. She wasn't taking anything out on anyone. She was reading, geez." At least, Ivy thought she was. She hadn't been watching Ana long enough to know, and she was hoping that her doppelganger had, in fact, been trying to read. Judging by the way she had shut herself off from everyone over the summer, it only made sense that she would do the same now that she was at school.

Ivy turned to Ana, lowering her voice and changing her tone. It was not just that she didn't want the first years to eavesdrop, but because she didn't think talking loudly would help her already strained relationship with Ana. "Are you... ok? Do you wanna get out of here?" She paused, tilting her head slightly to one side in an attempt to read Ana's expression. "We could go to the common room, you know. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we left now." The Gryffindor spoke gently, as if Ana would break any moment. This would perhaps frustrate the older girl, but Ivy was unaware of this possible consequence and simply offered her a kind smile.

Ana was going to commit a murder. It was going to happen. She had done nothing other than mind her own business and read, with a few characteristic glares thrown in, and not one but two first years thought it remotely appropriate to speak to her? Did parents just not teach their children basic respect anymore? The thought of parents sent a twinge of hurt through the third year. God, was the rest of her life going to be like this? Was she going to make sarcastic remarks to herself then feel bad because it mentioned her parents or her life before this summer? None of this internal turmoil was visible on her face. Instead, she glared first at the redhead who had spoken.

"Speak to me again and I will remove your tongue," Ana said coldly, her eyes murderous. Not that she had ever actually removed anyone's tongue before, but she had gotten into her fair share of illegal duels and fights, so surely she could figure out some way to remove the tongue of an annoying and basically defenseless first year. Her eyes dared the redhead to snap back or make any kind of reply.

Satisfied in her dealings with the redhead, she turned to the other girl. She had dark hair and looked like she was approximately four years old. Was Ana morally against bullying four-year-olds? She was about to find out...

"Love, if I were taking things out on anyone, you would know," she scoffed. Who in their right mind saw someone who clearly wanted to be left alone and decided to lecture them for how they were behaving? "Just to clarify, since you clearly aren't the most intelligent, it generally takes the form of me setting the irritant on fire."

Sighing slightly, she took a sip of coffee from the mug in front of her. She nearly choked as she heard Ivy begin to speak. Ivy wasn't exactly the last person she wanted to see - that honor currently belonged to one Oliver Beckett - but she was definitely low on Ana's list. To be fair, Ana didn't particularly want to see anyone. However, Ivy wasn't just Ana's half-sister (Ana wasn't even remotely used to thinking of her that way, but she at least acknowledged it was probably the truth), she had also felt it necessary to show up at Beckett Manor to check on Ana. To a sane person, that wouldn't seem like a reason to avoid someone, likely quite the opposite. Nobody had ever accused Ana of being sane. To Ana, that was a top-notch reason to avoid Ivy at practically all costs.

Ivy's tone infuriated Ana. She spoke as though Ana was fragile and might shatter at any moment. So what if she was? That was absolutely none of Ivy's concern, and Ana resented the younger girl condescending in such a manner. "Ivy, I'm going to say this once more. Leave. Me. Alone." Ana said. Her expression was inscrutable, which was fitting since not even Ana herself knew what was going on in her mind. Her tone was cold and haughty, nearly identical to how she had just spoken to the impertinent first years. It wasn't entirely fair, as, in any normal circumstances, Ana thought far higher of Ivy than she did random first years. In addition to the fact that she genuinely enjoyed Ivy's company and Ivy was also apparently her sister, Ivy had been right behind her at the ill-fated Blossom Ball. If anything, she had at least earned the respect that Ana was currently denying her. "I'm not sure how much more direct you need me to be about this. It seems the feeble-minded first years are rubbing off on you."

Ana exhaled sharply and tossed her messy ponytail slightly before pretending to focus intently upon her reading.
