| xxx | 𝓗aloed spots dotted Evelynn's vision as the duel took it's next turn. While imitation was said to be the highest form of flattery, Evelynn could have done without it in this moment. In an apparent bid to turn the lion strategy around, the Badgers regrouped with an impressive assault upon the Gryffindor team's most tenured participant. In an instant, the Lion's side of the piste was accosted by a series of loud pops and scorching sparks. The ex-seeker very nearly managed to evade any involvement, but not quite. A singing of her sleeve elicited a reflexive hiss and withdrawal of her arm at the most inopportune time. Her own spell, intended for Springhall, redirected its trajectory to the side and about half the distance, backfiring spectacularly to compound her burns with another. A swift flagging of her sleeve put an end to any spreading cinders, but not before the heat had reached her flesh. She grimaced, a full throb settling at the periphery of her concentration. |

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 2
There was a reason not to steal strategies in the middle of the duel and that was because trying something with little to no practice- especially in a stressful situation- did not often go as planned. Thankfully there were no explosions but having the spell flicker and fail before getting hit with it herself was not what one might call a fun experience. At least Lindsey managed a hit, and a good one at that, because Lea hadn't been of much help so far- nor did she think she would get the chance to help much longer with the winds forcing her back and the world more wobbly than it had been.

"Hello? Is this thing on?" Haven tapped her wand a few times. She didn't think it had an on switch, but she was often surprised by that sort of thing. She thought for sure she had that one, but evidently not. Haven frowned at her wand, turning it over a few times in her hand, before taking a ready stance. She would get them this time.

With the wind still inhibiting her movements, Pyxis thought it was time for Lea to throw a new move in, especially since she looked the most shaky of the Hufflepuff team. When an issue like that faced him in the lower year duels, he’d typically pass on casting to watch out for incoming spells. But he once again realized that the upperclassmen played differently as he watched Lea wave her wand to produce a magical shield around herself. But as novel as the idea was for Pyxis, it seemed like the lions were expecting something like that and Lea found herself the target of none of their spells.
Galton shot a jet of water towards Haven, but he couldn’t control the stream which allowed the Hufflepuff to step away easily. Meenauh sought to traumatize Pyxis by eviscerating Lindsey’s feet and the Slytherin almost shut his eyes in fear. Alas, Lindsey once again showcased her prowess in evading the explosion of the stage. Despite the splinters that still managed to cause the badger some harm, Pyxis was impressed.
Evelynn was the only one of the Gryffindors to find some success with her Cracker Jinx. Even though Lindsey had coolly missed out on blowing up, she could not avoid some of the smaller explosions caused by Evelynn’s crackers. Haven and Lea, however, were a safe distance away. Lindsey conjured crackers of her own but found similar success to Evelynn with only one Gryffindor feeling the effects of the popping. Meenauh, caught by the center of the spell, was not as lucky as Evelynn and Galton. And Haven who looked to be zoned out and yet had not gotten hit once in this bout of spell slinging.

Yeah, her wand was definitely not on, she determined, squinting at it a bit closer, leaning in, before hearing a gush of water past her ear. Apparently she had inadvertently dodged their spell. Oh yeah, she was in the middle of a duel. Whoops. She forgot about that for a moment.
Only Haven could forget she was in a duel in the middle of a duel.
She tried to be a little more focused this time, paying attention to anything the Lions tried to throw at her. Marcus would be disappointed in her if she came back missing a few pieces. She'd probably owe him cake, too, so if she didn't give him that he'd probably take one of her fingers himself. Mm, cake. She just needed to finish the Rawr Rawrs off and then she could have some.

Despite the fact that they loved the Cracker Jinx themselves, she always hated getting the full blast of it. The spell was messing with her concentration, and despite constantly training her non-verbal and wandless, it still was an annoying little thing that prevented her from concentrating well.
But the most of their strategy succeeded, so she was ready to sacrifice a little of herself for the greater cause, and move to the next step.

These Gryffindors were too good at predicting the next move, the badgers constantly on their backfoot in order to keep some chance in this duel. Thankfully while prediction wasn't going their way, it seemed observation and dodging was as the incentive to not get hit grew with every blast. Lindsey would still suffer from both a nearby explosion and the spray of the crackers, but Lea and Haven managed to keep their distance. No frontal attacks would test the strength of her barrier but at least it gave her a small break to readjust and reassess. Even the clouds would remain quiet in this, although she wasn't sure how much it helped. Out of answers and out of time.

She was being alert and speedy enough, but still wasn’t able to escape the splinters of a blasting curse as well as a cracker jinx. Lindsey puffed as she watched her own crackers exploding on the opposite side of the stage, the smoke all over the place and the rain cloud lingering above their heads blurring her vision. The dull pain in her chest and limbs made her groan slightly, and all she could do was to keep steady. Who knows what’s ahead?

Galton really couldn't count on his aim any longer. It felt like betting on which way a chocolate frog would first hop. He'd been honed in one second and making an (near) abysmal blunder the next. It was hard to even blame it on his wand, he'd long since quelled that beast. Or had he?
Of course! While the pair had come to an agreement that Mr. Wand would cease all magical blow back, no matter the circumstance, they hadn't agreed he wouldn't interfere in other ways. Wands could have such nasty temperaments after all. Summoning his 6 years of negotiation skills to placate Mr. Wand, Galton would open the conversation with his best "Mr. Wand! Sorry for ignoring you..." It was insane to think Mr. Wand wouldn't be acting up after being ignored for so long.
Action: Placating the wand

| xxx | By all accounts, the Gryffindors' luck had run out. What command of the duel the lions had managed to secure at the start of the match was gradually dwindling, the Badgers able to inflict counter measures one at a time. Nevertheless, they didn't falter entirely. Quick judgment avoided casting into the barrier erected by Lea, instead whittling down the stamina of her team mates. Thunder continued to roll ominously overhead, casting oppressive shadows across the match. Evelynn's own burns had faded to dull throbs, blanketed beneath the ever present tide of adrenaline. They just needed to keep up the pressure. |
