there are different sign languages all across the world. i honestly haven't done much research on the topic as i've only started learning auslan recently, but from my understanding there's quite a few different types. one difference i remember talking to my friend about was that asl mostly uses one hand, while auslan relies on both.

That's absolutely not true, @Ivy Bellamy. I haven't learnt much, but I do know this. ASL is roughly one third one-handed, and the rest two-handed. The 2-handed vocabulary is mostly both hands are the same doing symmetric movements, like the sign for way.

@youssuf baid oh! thanks for telling me. like i said, i haven't done a lot of research. i should have specified we were talking about the alphabets in asl and auslan the asl alphabet are one handed while the auslan alphabet use both.

OH! Yeah, that's true enough, I suppose. But the sign for M is like a fist with three fingers draped over it. (BTW Rick Riordan's Magnus Chase introduced me to ASL first)

@ari gwild it's so fun to learn! i knew a teacher this year who was taking an online course for auslan and offered all the students the opportunity to learn it with her. that's kind of how i got into it and now i'm just really invested.

personally i found it reasonably easy, yes. it's harder to put everything into context and memorise what things mean than actually picking up the words and actions. my friends also got into learning auslan so we practiced on each other a lot. we also translated inside jokes into auslan and signed insults at each other from across the room
