In allowing users to write RP with AI, we would be encouraging a population of the site to purposefully run our creations through LLMs so that LLMs can train off our data and generate a response. I definitely do not consent to that.
This is the one piece I wanted to reiterate Asa's point that I also whole heartedly do not consent to and is my main reason for not wanting to roleplay with people who use AI.

I would also like to add on to what I said (now that I am home and have more time) Not only is AI soulless and dry. The environmental impact alone makes me angry. Not only are people making these slop images carelessly and in a lot of cases trying to pass it off as human made. But they are actively harming the environment. As if there already isn't enough going on with things that harm where we live, why add to it with things that just, suck?
I believe that Draven has put it perfectly. I don't want to read anything or look at anything to be blunt, that someone didn't have the 'will' to make themselves. If they didn't care to make it, I don't care to indulge in it.

So, as a high school student, AI surrounds me constantly. My opinion on this matter lies in what my knowledge is of AI (thanks to my father) as well as the fact of what I've learned about it myself.
AI is a tool and should be used as one, and I believe that AI for certain things is okay.
To elaborate, using AI to write your papers, books, RPs, assignments, or whatever is not okay in my opinion. Creative writing got its name for a reason. Like people have said. AI is not creative and it is not personal. It is a tool being used for the wrong reasons.
I have an English teacher that fits under the category of misusing AI. For every assignment and test we do, it is clearly completely AI written. The problem with this is that she does nothing to teach us at all. She gives us a study guide, and what is on the test isn't even on the study guide she gave us. This is why AI is misused in this scenario.
Now, the reason why I also believe AI can be useful. To elaborate on this, I don't mean using it to write for you, but to assist you. This is for scenarios such as if you're studying for a test and need a way to compile all your information in a quick time. You can also use it to help spark inspiration, check your grammar, or even make outlines for essays for you. This isn't bad. In this way AI is being used as a tool to make you better or help you do better.
What I've seen as far as AI writing on here is completely wrong. I'm on another HP website where I face AI written assignments every single day that I must grade and give feedback on. In these scenarios I always have the same feeling within me. Disappointment. I love reading creative writing regardless of the level of expertise a person has with writing. I've learned from many years of constantly writing myself that you only get better if you begin writing.

I just want to say I am deeply against AI in all forms, including both writing and art. AI is theft. Period. It also is very dangerous due to its effects on the environment. And as a result, I do not feel comfortable engaging with those that rely on AI. Similar to others, I also do not consent to any of my original works being used to train AI in any form.
I do appreciate, however, that AI checkers are concerningly biased against non-native speakers, and I do think this is something to be aware of from an equity lens.

I hold the opinion that the use of generative AI to write your work for is never okay.
Those that use translators or grammar assistance technology (Grammarly) are absolutely allowed to continue using these tools. I support that because they are still writing their posts, merely using these tools to assist in their writing. They allow for these users to interact with and write in this community, while their writing remains their own.
However, I personally enjoy the creativity and passion that comes with writing on h.io. I do not want to be writing with a bot. I want to be writing with a human. H.io is a creative writing site. AI is not human, it does not have creativity. One of the reasons I love h.io is that I can interface with other people that share my passion for writing, and it feels like the biggest betrayal when I find out that someone is not writing their own work, and that instead a bot in writing for them.
Alyss was created from my own creativity, and I admit; her character design may be a little basic. But she is a character that I have created and I am proud of it. She has flaws, and exhibits human emotions. I take hours to write her, not only because I enjoy writing her but because it is important to me how she is perceived and the choices I make to maintain who she is as my character. I can sometimes take over a month to write my replies because I get busy and occasionally am not motivated. I am understanding of my partners who take time to reply because I understand this struggle.
As a full-time high school student, balancing many things is hard. In spite of this, I have never turned to AI to write one of my posts on h.io, and I never will. AI has many impacts on my life, and I see it through the Google search engine daily. Friends use it to write them practice questions for tests, have it grade their assignments before sending them in. Since being educated about the impact that AI has on our environment, I have not used it willingly. (That is a bit off topic, if you want the long rant about the environmental consequences, DM me.) I personally also dislike the use of AI to create art, because of the fact that it steals from human artists. This does not necessarily mean I believe AI art should be banned, simply that I do not support it.
My stance is tougher on writing because of the fact that Hogwarts.io is, at the end of the day, a creative writing site. The use of AI to write is against the very foundation of what I believe h.io stands for.

Please keep in mind that these are my opinions and mine alone, I do not wish to attack you personally or make you feel offended. Translations are thumbs up to me, inclusivity is important and as long as you're the one writing, simply translating your words is a non-issue to me. I am extremely kind and nice otherwise, I promise. I am merely passionate about this subject and wishes to voice my concern, so word of warning those are going to sound a teeny tiny aggressive, but I do not mean to attack anyone.
I will start by stating AI has absolutely no buisness in being in a roleplay site. I honestly feel disappointed that not everyone here share this opinion, and that some would actually be okay with having threads with AI users. I would not. I seriously cannot comprehend the option of having 'AI tags' for AI users is being considered. First and foremost, we have rules. "- Users are expected to write their own posts. An AI's work is not your own." Second, if you want to roleplay with AI, then a roleplay site filled with very human, very lively characters is not your place. This site has taken a huge part of my life, and has truly grown into more than a mere hobby for me. My characters are a part of myself, of my soul, and watching them grow, interact and evolve around other's characters truly feels me with a sense of joy and excitement little has been able to match. I love plotting angst with evil-minded writers, I love planning cutesy threads and giggling over how silly our characters would be in that situation, I love imagining aesthetics and vibes, I love creating backstories, I love imagining their appearance, and most of all— I love roleplaying them. I adore understanding them better in the middle of a heated argument with another writer's character, I adore discussing plots ideas and suddenly realize a flaw, I love putting them in dilemmas or paradox and wonder how they will climb their way out. I love writing, more than anything in the world. Stories are pieces of one's mind, a window to their soul you can peek through, something unique, fragile and beautiful. Each writer has their own quill, their pen, their voice. Sure, it can start a little wobbly, a little broken (everyone is ashamed of their first thread lol) but it will sharpen itself over time and flourish into something you'd have never imagine.
Why would you leave that pleasure to a robot ?
Why, why on earth would you, human with a brain and creativity beyond what you can imagine, why would you surrender the very thing that makes us who we are to a soulless machine ?
I understand the fear of not being good enough of a writer, I've been there. I understand the langage barrier, I've been there. But I promise it is not worth losing your creativity to AI. Pick up a pen, scribble everything that comes through your mind, think. Art is beautiful, art has a soul, something intangible we cannot grasp nor feel but moves you to tears while gazing at a painting made by someone deceased centuries ago. Art, wether it is singing, dancing, drawing, painting, writing, cooking, filming, capturing—it has always been, and will always be part of who we are. It will always connect us more than anything could, and this is what I love about this site. Creativity in its rawest form. And yet, and yet those soul-sucking creatures still find a way inside.
I would take a badly written thread over an AI written one any time, I would take a terrible idea over an AI one any time, I would take anything humans can give me over AI, anytime. You do not know how to write ? Try! Try and fall, and get back up, make mistakes and correct them because this is how we learn. You do not need AI to be who you are, and who you are is what we want to see here. Show us you, your quill, your idea and your creativity, show us your virtues and flaws, show us you and how oh so very human you are.
NOW, now that we've discussed the main matter, let me move on to why I stand against AI as a whole.

Yes! AI companies employ underpaid workers to perform repetetive tasks to improve our own usage. OpenAI (the company that owns ChatGPT) employed kenyan workers paid 2$ an hour to 'moderate', make GPT less toxic, meaning they had humans watch pictures of p-dophiles, t-rture, s-cuide all day. Linked is the article, if you wish to inform yourself further. I strongly recommend the book 'Empire of AI' by Karen Hao, the examples I'm about to cite bellow have been presented by my university on a course about AI and have been taken from her book. The example developped was the one of Mo Fatokhine, one of the kenyan employees of OpenAI. The constant exposure to violent or sexual content resulted in radical change in his behaviour, causing his wife and daughter to leave him and not come back.
Other than literal exploitation, AI steals. The art generated by AI is an industry estimated at roughly 50 billion dollars. And how do you think the data used as training is collected ? Illegally. Professional artists all around the world denounced damage to reputation, economic losses, plagiarism and copyright infrigement. Every picture you generate is built off the stolen work of professional artist, without consent or remuneration.

Numerous articles and scientific studies already show this but I'll repeat it : AI is disastrous for the environnement. Training LLM is roughly worth 500 New York-Paris flights, one request uses thirty times more energy than a google research. The continued growth of data centers uses electricity, and contracts are passed with fossile and nuclear industries, as the part of AI in a country's consommation is becoming bigger and bigger by the second. In Tenesse, Elon Musk built his gigantic Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, and powers it using approximately 35 unauthorized methane plants that release thousands of tons of air pollutants into these communities. In Ireland, 100% of the energy produced by green sources (wind turbine, etc) is used to fuel AI centers, making the country back to its original state. AI is distracting us from reaching our carbon goal, destroying the planets. Sure, it's not the only factor in game but it is an additional one that makes the balance weight on the opposite side.
Water, drinkable water, is used to cool down data center. Every five prompts, a whole bottle of water is being drunk by those centers. Drinkable water, while countries dies of thirst. In Urugay, Montevideo, water was contaminated by a datacenter and then drunk by the populations, causing women to miscarriage (cf. Hao's book).
Of course countless of other fiels like education (AI is making us dumber, studies have shown a drop in overall IQs), justice (AI is reproducting patterns of our world, causing for example POC to appear more likely to recidive than others, which is a problem as they're being used in justice), etc.
I stand by my statement — AI is bad. While yes, it has the potential of helping us greatly, nowdays the consequences outweights the results, and I do not know about you but I care about my planet, and my people. BOO AI!!!! YAY HUMANS!!!!

AI is not bad, nor is it good. It's a great invention and I'm glad it exists. However, the way it is used is what makes it good or bad. AI makes life more efficient and can help us progress. Unfortunately, with every new invention, we humans lose some skills. Very few people know how to sew, or form a blade from metal, as those skills are dying out due to less of a need. Over time, we will adapt as a society to the skills AI takes from us. There is always a cost to efficiency.
AI means we can think faster, search faster, write faster, and so much more. However, it isn't really us. We as individuals apart from AI have a harder time thinking for ourselves, we grow worse at researching, writing, and so on. So many jobs are impacted, which is good in some aspects, but disastrous to many people right now as the world faces these growing pains.
When it comes to our wizarding community, AI doesn't have a place. If you don't have the time, skill (which doesn't have to be much, I'm sure roleplaying with others helps grow writing skills), and will to dedicate a little part of your life to this, then you shouldn't be on the website. I’ll just briefly detail my opinions and what I think that we should allow. I’m not against AI in general. But I think overall as a creative writing site, we shouldn’t allow
Homework: I think this one is easily agreeable. Not at all. What’s the point of the system if people are allowed to simply let AI do the work for you? It’s completely unfair to the people that spend hours doing the actual homework, if people are simply using AI. If a RP is required, just write to the best of your ability (or include the original if you are translating). I would assume that the professors enjoy reading pieces of different writers, and they understand that everyone is at a different level.
Generating RP Output I know that I’m here on hio to enjoy myself and expand my writing abilities. If I, or other players, start using AI to completely write posts, my reasons for being on hio are completely lost. I no longer will have any motivation to write, and honestly the point for me wouldn’t exist anymore. There is so little care in using AI, and as someone who goes to sleep considering my characters story and spends hours writing for her, for someone to write ‘write a response to this for my character’ would be exceptionally disappointing. So for generating content I feel it should not be allowed at all.
Using AI to Edit and Give Feedback I think this is probably where most people get caught using too much AI and using it to assist. There’s a difference between regularly using AI to edit (and potentially rewrite) your writing to using AI’s suggestions to manually edit your writing. I have used AI to ask for feedback on a couple of late night pieces or ones that are just not making sense. You have no idea how many wrong spelled words and unfinished sentences it picks up. But I draw the line there. If it tells me something’s wrong or doesn’t make sense, i will go back and edit it and use my brain to change it instead of simply using AI’s sugggeations. So personally, I think using AI to get suggestions to improve is perfectly fine, so long the writing is still yours and none of the content is AI’s.
Translations Honestly, this seems pretty straightforward to me. Include the original in revelio of using AI to translate. If people want to be on hio, but struggle with English, there should remain options.
AI generated art/images I do use AI to generate images of Amelia as i am yet to find a person that matches her that I like. Honestly, considering all the times I make AI redo it because it’s ‘not right’ it would probably be quicker to just draw something (but definitely look a little haunted with my drawing skills). I think that this is fine, so long no one claims that it is their work.
Finally, thanks for the opportunity to be able to add to this discussion. And to the people that raised their concerns about AI thanks too - I’m going to actually research some of the negative impacts because to be honest I didn’t know a lot of it. Sorry if there’s some mistakes in there

AI Use and You
I read this thread as a search for the better solution on how to better deal with AI usage in Hio. I didn’t read it as a prompt to give personal opinions on the morals and ethics of AI and how it impacts society in its many facets.
I realised that there is an increased usage of this tool in ways that are weighing unnecessarily too much heavily on those who have to moderate this site. All I focused on was in the most flexible way that would decrease that weight and workload, and at the same time would show the most assessable and understanding way of dealing with it.
I assumed, if this thread was made, is because how things are dealt with nowadays is not the best solution for everyone. And so, I can see three possible and practical ways of resolving this (accepting that can be more):
1) stay how it is done now. We have a rule against AI usage, the players are all informed of it. However there is a very flexible police in which is given to the player a way to explain themselves and make edits. If this is leading to many back and forth conversations and time consuming, then maybe give “one” chance to explain and edit and that’s it. No space for more than one lie, no extra effort to confirm that said lie, if it is or not. AI is forbidden, your post flag as AI, until it does it is going to be deleted.
2) the policy becomes more strict and there’s zero tolerance and no space to explanations or edits. It is an AI post, it gets immediately deleted, an owl is sent informing of that and that’s it. People can complain, find an excuse (plausible or not) but there’s no more response on that matter. Players are informed that AI is forbidden, what is used to track it. If even with that information they decided to risk, then it’s their choice and by no means it should weigh on staff and be extra time consuming. We completely ignore empathy for the many reasons AI can be being used.
3) what I said before. On situations that brings unfairness to others and could actually impact harmfully the experience of other players, acquire an advantage on game play, etc, AI is not tolerable and should be given the opportunity to edit it. In cases in which AI is used for writing private threads and specially solos that have zero impact on other’s characters and stories etc…than for the sake of moderation sanity and time, it can be ignored unless it breaks lore.
What I’m reading is that the majority of people that cares about this issue is against AI here. So I’m guessing the way would be to become more strict or keep things as they are being dealt with.

If we're allowed to propose a path forward, I'd recommend a two-strike policy for AI writing and continue to allow it for images. There's no feasible way to police what might be AI in images and what might not be, which is why I think there's no current way to regulate that. If someone has an idea of what this might look like, i'd be keen to hear it.
Since prefects have to patrol the forum, I think it's possible to continue to have them run posts into an AI checker if they're feeling suspicious. There can be room for non-native English speakers and perhaps an area to have them listed out for staff to see so they know who doesn't need another owl or what have you.
