The second race as Tristan expected was a far more success than the first race and he hoped that this success would become a strength rather than a one time event. The second race had brought him to an average of 9th place which was far better than he expected. However, this was not a success enough for Tristan as 9th place would not make him a winner and give him the galleons he desired. Hopefully, this race, despite the monstrosity that the race seemed to be, would bring him back all the way to first place, in the end. Sir Exelsior had not taken too much damage, but still, it was repainted and restored to perfect condition and it was once again ready for a new challenging race. Tristan went to the front of the starting line and carefully placed the gnome at the line. Tristan leaned down and encouraged the little creature, “Come on you can do it. I believe in you. I know this race might look terrifying to you, but endure and you shall do great! Come on, you can do it, be excited! Come on, I am showing you my emotions when I never do! Come on!” With this excitement, Tristan heard the countdown, and off the gnome went!

The next race wouldn't end up as well. It was okay- Kit hadn't expected that Yorick would be the best all the time, but it would have been pretty cool to see if he was. She'd cheer him on throughout the race, eyes glancing between her gnome and the ones in front to see if they might have slipped up and let Sir Roy catch up. That wouldn't be the case though, others expertly moving through the twists and tumbles, nothing seeming to slow them down. Yorick, on the other hand, wasn't very good at looking far ahead and ended up managing to trap himself multiple times. The beauxbatons student also wasn't one of the smartest ones yet her outside view made the answers obvious, struggling to contain a groan as the gnome went in what was clearly the wrong way before slipping as he tried to retrace his steps. Despite his rather unfortunate performance, he did manage to keep himself towards the middle of the pack which was good enough for Kit. He'd definitely need some more repairs after this, immediately moving down after the race was down to scoop the gnome up.

"That was a really good try, but maybe keep your eyes up and looking around you if possible. I know the ground moved a lot the first round, but I suspect the traps'll change again like last time." She offered her advice after the repairs and before the next race started, her tone light yet more serious than expected in a situation where one was speaking to a gnome who wasn't paying attention and the girl also didn't really care if she won or lost. The game itself had certainly kept her interest, even more so when she heard the theme of the next race. "Oooh, this one's going to be tough buddy- you got this!" She cheered, setting Yorick Roy down at the starting line before stepping back to watch the show. This would be a challenge, Kit now wishing she had some popcorn to munch on as she witnessed what may very well become a gnome massacre.

Role-Playing as Angelique Selemine from Koldovstoretz
If anything Angelique feared the most for her gnome, was the torture devices that were going to be used. Mouse traps - was Bella- Daisy going to continue tying for second place or sink down lower? This challenge seemed one of the hardest.

The Broom Racer looked at her gnome fondly, realizing that it must have been slightly similar to herself in a way - good at evading obsteclales. She made the gnome delicate and the start and worried about it, but it seemed that Bella Daisy's wits were working quickly. There were just a couple races to go, was there even a tiny chance that she could win?

But the student had came here for fun, and was going to have it, regardless if she won or not.
"Good luck, little Daisy, show them what you can do!" Angelique watched as her gnome was set on the race track. It looked as though her gnome was going to need to have all the luck she could get - Angelique wouldn't look so fierce if she had suddenly became a gnome and was put to do those challenges.

And the race began. The blond student looked hopefully at the race, trying to spot Bella-Daisy amongst the crowd of tiny gnomes.

Reuben sighed as he saw that Evergreen had come almost last in the second race. Above that, the gnome looked like it would collapse any second. He quietly went to the gnome and patted its head. "Hey, it's okay, you did good. You just need to survive one more round and you'll make it! I know you won't disappoint me, my little gnome.", he said softly in Arabic.

He knew there was little to no chance he would actually win because, well, Evergreen might have come second in the first round, but the gnome was almost last in the second, and that really decreased the average. Besides, the last round was supposed to be even harder, wasn't it?

However, what mattered was participating and taking the risk because well, nobody could be perfect, and his gnome was the same. Good at certain things, and not that great at others. There was always fun in participating and checking out your luck or how good or bad your creations were. Reuber smiled to himself as he cheered his gnome on, giving it all the encouragement it would need to make it through the race.

Not everyone can win, but everyone should have a chance to try.

EmmaLee giggled as Stephen fist bumped their gnomes and came back over to stand next to her. She nodded at his sentiment about the sleepy gnome. "I believe that would make 'im a dark horse." She said, with a small smirk, turning back to their gnomes. She giggled once more in delight as they began to fist bump each other and fist pump the air in what you could almost call a secret handshake. They bumped their left hands, then their right hands, then pumped the air in excitement. EmmaLee pumped the air too and twirled her parasol, eager for the next race to start.

"It seems that Gnome Matter What and Gnome N. Clature are thick as thieves already." She said, turning from the comradery of their gnomes to her own comrade. Her smile broadened at the sight of his own excitement. She had expected that they would have fun at this event, but she had not expected that they would have quite this much fun. As she looked around at the other contestants, it was almost like parents watching their children at a sports match. Some were beaming with pride, others were genuinely concerned about their gnome's well being, but everyone was very encouraging of their little creations.

She had known that the gnomes would be enchanted, but she hadn't realized that that enchantment would come with cute little personalities. As she looked around at the other gnomes, she could see that almost all of them were determined about their purpose as racing... um... toys? but she could also see a glimmer of their owners in every one. Some were anxious, some were excited, some were clearly just here to have a good time. Her own giddiness and enjoyment bubbled out of her once more in a giggle as all their stubby little legs began the next race.

A pale hand flew to her mouth as Gnome Matter What pulled forward to the head of the pack with another gnome. Her little Gnome was ever proving to be more agile and witty than she had realized it could be as it sailed through obstacle after obstacle. "Uh oh!" She gasped, covering her eyes anxiously, as her little gnome finally tripped up and tumbled down a tall book ramp. She peered through her fingers as he tumbled to the bottom and cheered as he hoped up, shook it off, and charged the rest of the way over the finish line. A tie for first!

EmmaLee couldn't believe it. She cheered happily, a surge of French exclamations pouring out of her mouth, and ran over to scoop her little gnome up into a great hug as it crossed the finish line. She quickly toted the little red wonder to where Stephen was still waiting and watching Gnome N. Clature.

She turned with a frown, just now realizing that the little purple pirate was significantly farther behind her little racer this round. He had been doing so well, but EmmaLee winced with an "oof" each time as Gnome N. Clature fell to two traps and an obstacle in a row. "Poor little guy." She said, frowning first at Stephen and then at her own Gnome Matter What. Gnome Matter What looked on to his friend with a sad expression as well. He clasped his little hands together and shook them, as if pleading to fate for his friend to go faster. But, alas, EmmaLee and Gnome Matter What winced together as Gnome N. Clature tripped through one last trap before crossing the finish line a full 30 agonizing seconds after Gnome Matter What.

EmmaLee grabbed Stephen's hand and dragged him with her to meet her friend's gnome at the finish line, genuine concern for the little thing coating her face. Once she had transported him to the finish line, Gnome Matter What scrambled down from her arms and patted his fellow gnome on the shoulder in sympathy.

"You did splendidly, Gnome N. Clature. This was a 'ard course." EmmaLee said, sympathetically. "You'll do even better the next round." She said, finally dropping Stephen's hand and clenching hers near her chest in a gesture of anticipated victory. Gnome Matter What mimicked the gesture with a confident, determined nod and a squeaky, gnome-y "humph" sound of agreement with his maker. EmmaLee giggled with her hand over her mouth at her gnomes antics. "You both are sure to win this whole thing!" She said, confidently, before turning to Stephen for his own words of encouragement and then turning to lead everyone back to the starting line as the other gnomes crossed the finish line and a new, harrowing mouse trap course was set for their gnome-y creations to cross.

EmmaLee twirled her parasol anxiously as the perilous traps were laid. "Welp, 'ere goes round three." She said with a wavering smile at Stephen.

"You did great!" said Lorelai to her little friend. He did in fact. 125 seconds, to Lorelai, that was great. "Be careful on this one, okay?" she said, looking at the next race.

Mousetraps and gnomes didn't seem like a great idea. She was scared he'd break, since she had been so attached to Mr. Burty Fizzingbuns.

The girl took her gnome to MouseTrap Mayhem. "Just be very, very careful, alright? Don't step on the traps, okay?" the girl breathed. She knew a repair charm and professor would come over to help her if the little gnome broke. She really hoped that that would not happen. If that did happen, she would be very, very sad, reasoning being she had gotten really close to her little friend. Lorelai had trained him for a bit, and she thought he was ready for the races.

Then, the race began. Lorelai closed closed her eyes, and breathed slowly. I really hope he doesn't break... she thought. Then, she looked at the race. She decided to not think about that, just cheer her little gnome on, hoping he would get a better time, than the two last races, she said things like "Go Mr. Burty!" or "You can do this!" while the race went on.

Gnome Racing Day - 17 July, 2023

He watched the second race with degrees of despair and euphoria. The crowd around he and EmmaLee were all screaming out the names of their gnomes, but the name that kept ringing in his mind was Dickens. You know, 'it was the best of times, it was the worst of times....' Stephen had begun this leg of the race feeling somewhat optimistic given his little pirate's fabulous first leg, but my how things did change. And they changed rapidly.

Gnome N. Clature started out just fine, but it became clear his little fellow had a blind eye to all of the traps. Stephen put his own hand over his eyes sometimes not even able to watch the punishing brutality his purple pirate managed to run right into each and every time a trap was present. It was so bad Stephen began to wonder if Gnome N. Clature was blind in one, no make that both eyes. Did they make double eye patches for pirates? Yes, of course they did. It was called a blindfold.

Stephen laughed a little at that thought. He might have run a better race had he been blindfolded. Hard to imagine he could have done worse. Still, as badly as his gnome was doing, he laughed even more, but exuberantly, at EmmaLee's very own Gnome Matter What. Her little gnome was on fire - dodging and climbing and leaping and doing one particularly impressive back flip over a trap. Gnome N. Clature saw that impressive feat from good distance behind his gnome friend and stopped momentarily to jump up and down and clap hand to hook together for his friend. That, too, tickled Stephen, but gave him more reason for concern. Clearly the problem for Gnome N. Clature was not clouded vision. Nope. It was worse. It was clouded thinking or a failure to imagine. Either way, Stephen hoped the next leg played to his little fellows strengths and not to his mental acuity which was clearly lacking.

Moving his attention between his and EmmaLee's gnomes, he could not help but fixate on hers for the last few seconds of the race as Gnome Matter What crossed the FINISH line in a dead heat with one other miraculous gnome. He looked down at her, smiling as they both grabbed onto each other as her little guy crossed in a tie for first place. What was even better was that when the overall Gnome Standings were posted minutes later, Gnome Matter What held first place all on his own.

"Bravo, Gnome Matter What!" he yelled out. Then looking down at the beautiful girl who was jumping up and down next to him in exuberant joy, he felt the urge to scoop her up so that she stood out above everyone else, both in height and because of her bright yellow dress. It was an urge he resisted, but that he had even thought about it puzzled him greatly.

As EmmaLee brought Gnome Matter What over to watch Gnome N. Clature finally finish his painful race, Stephen whistled out to him once he crossed that line. "Way to finish, buddy! I'm proud of you." He looked down at EmmaLee and smiled at her longer than he anticipated. Her eyes seemed so much more blue amidst the yellow.

For a few seconds looking into her eyes, he forgot what he was going to say. He just stared. Then someone in the crowd bumped into him and he blinked, coughing a little as he quickly averted his eyes over to his happy little purple pirate, not in the least bothered by, or more likely aware of, his poor showing. Stephen took a deep breath and hoped he had not embarrassed her by staring because he had surely embarrassed himself.

"Fabulous race, EmmaLee and Gnome Matter What. Come on. Let's go get my little buddy and get them placed for the next race."

"You did great man, keep it up. Be careful, smart, and strong. You have 1 round left" Ara said to Sir Fickley Puffilysnot Jr. who was now fixed. She sighed, 'At least he's not last. He improved actually' It was the last course, Mousetrap Mayhem. 'Who came up with that name? They're not mice, they're gnomes' she questioned. The announcer asked them to place their gnome on the starting line. Ara made her way there with Sir Puffilysnot, "Do your best, be in the top 10 at least" she encouraged, was that encouraging though?

She looked at the course, it looked more like a torture run rather than a race course. It looked like they were trying to kill the poor gnomes. Instead of feeling sorry for the gnomes who were about to race, Ara thought if those traps were good to trap actual mice. If they did, she would ask if she can have them for her house and for random experiments.

'This race will be much more interesting than the others at least' she thought while looking at the course. The other participants and Ara were now waiting for the start of the race. She wished her gnome good luck in her mind.

Es watched as Lord Gnomington began to tackle the obstacles ahead.

The first was a sticky charm that slowed him down. Estelle cheered louder, urging her gnome through the effects. He finally broke free but tripped, falling down the pile of books. Es sighed. There was no way Lord Gnomington would win.

That didn't mean he couldn't finish.

Estelle cheered Lord Gnomington on as the brave gnome encountered every obstacle, doing his best to get past them. She knew that he wouldn't win but cheered his relentless perseverance, watching as he reached the final line.

All other gnomes had finished and most of the other students had placed their gnomes at the beginning of the next course, but Lord Gnomington didn't give up. He completed the final obstacle and ran to the finish line, completing the race. That felt like a win in itself.

After a brief cleanup and a small break for the gnome, Es and Lord Gnomington headed to the next race.

It was a small course, laid out with many mousetraps. Estelle hoped that, after the chaos of the last round, Lord Gnomington's luck would change and he would do even better. As they say, when you reach rock bottom, the only way you can go is up!

Woof. Little Gnome Home did seem to receive Della's previous words of encouragement. He faired much better this round, using his wits to dodge books. Della wasn't sure if he could read, but she imagined if he could, he would be a bookworm. So it was fitting.

However, it wasn't enough to catch the lead. She tried hard not to think about what would be needed for a comeback. Looking down at the small face, stone and frozen with an etched grimace, she thought she could see that Gnome Home was thinking the same as her. It was a bit hopeless at this point. But he had been created for this race—it must be quite existential to be terrible at the one thing you were created for. And not understand the meaning of your name either. Now her thoughts were swimming with flashes of Frankenstein and the ethics of it all. She gave herself a mental shake, focus on the next race.

Summer wasn't going as well as she had hoped. The gnome race felt like a metaphorical peek into what the whole summer, maybe even the upcoming year, would bring her. Losing races, growing up, failing, not being good enough—all of it felt like too much right now. Maybe she should have stayed home.
