After being welcomed to the ball by one of the hostesses who Dinah learned was named Rhea, Dinah was feeling a little better about being there. She actually felt like she was supposed to be there now.Mentions Rhea Bishop and interacts with Kalani Anderson
The girl had seemed very friendly and she took Dinah to the middle of the room where a crowd of people had gathered.
Dinah vaguely recognised a few of the faces, there was a couple of fellow Gryffindors and some others she hadn’t yet met before.
Rhea introduced the group to her. She pointed out each person, identifying them by the colour of their dresses or hair and saying their name as she did so. Dinah was very grateful for this. She was certain she would forget the names pretty soon but the associations would make it at least a little bit easier for her.
Once introductions were done and it seemed the majority of people invited were in the ballroom, Rhea announced she would soon start taking music suggestions.
Frowning slightly to herself, Dinah couldn’t help but wonder what kind of music these people listened to. Would it be all wizards music that she’d never heard of? Or the popular rapping that seemed to have taken over the teenagers in the muggle world?
It wasn’t really Dinahs tastes. In fact she hadn’t listened to much music back in London, mainly because she didn’t have a lot of access to it. The only music in the home was played through an old, beat-up stereo that only seemed to play crackly covers of old one hit wonders.
As these thoughts were running through her head, Dinah suddenly noticed a figure stood beside her.
She turned her attention to the girl beside her and was pleased to see it was Kalani Anderson.
A fellow Gryffindor, they shared a dorm and Dinah hoped they might even become good friends.
Kalani’s beautiful red dress flowed around her like water and was very flattering. Dinah couldn’t help admiring it with a smile.
“Hi!” Kalani signed to her, a wide smile on her face. “Isn’t this great?”
Dinah nodded as she gestured to the ballroom and the homemade decorations that covered it.
“It’s beautiful.” Dinah smiled. “You look great by the way.” She pointed enthusiastically to Kalani’s dress.
“I hope this is going to be a good night.”
Worries were going round Dinahs head like flies. Would they have to dance? Would it be formal? Should she have a date? Looking round a few others seemed to have come together.
She was immensely glad to have Kalani there. Even if they weren’t great friends there was always strength in numbers.

"Hi."
The timely arrival of Dymphna saved Sebastian from having to awkwardly wait beside the grumpy door Elf. With a nod, the Slytherin smiled and motioned for his - well, for lack of a better term - date to lead the way, following in her wake; as he passed the Elf, Sebastian gave the short grump a glare, silver-blue eyes like daggers, before disappearing inside alongside his friend.
Once inside, the boy was surprised by how much effort had actually gone into the decorations. The hall looked impressive, especially since it had been a student organized event, from what Sebastian had heard. And when Dymphna asked if he knew anyone, Sebastian shook his head, scanning the numerous faces, putting each to memory. He noted several popular students, some cliques, a few social wanderers and some nobodies - and for a moment had to consider which he was...
"I don't recognize anyone I've personally met, no," Sebastian said in a low tone, for reasons he wasn't sure. It just seemed something to be quiet about. Or maybe it was the people, and not wanting them to hear. "I see a few faces I know the names of, though. Did you plan to do the rounds?"
Within moments the pair were walking the floor, Sebastian largely keeping close to Dymphna, giving the occasional nod or smile to another student in passing. The crowd wasn't as big as the Blossom Ball, which was a blessing, so Sebastian wasn't as socially frozen as he might otherwise have been; in fact, the group of students presently around were nearing his limit, but he was comfortable, and it felt pleasant.
Hopefully it doesn't get much larger, Sebastian thought, as he watched a redhead approaching, a large smile on her face. And here we go...
Sebastian returned a smile, as he hovered near Dymphna. Being her plus one meant he would follow her throughout the night, effectively acting as a shadow, and would make sure to be pleasant to those the Ravenclaw spoke with. It was only proper considering he had been invited along to a party he hadn't received an invite for.
"Good to meet you, Amadea," The Slytherin said, offering a nod of his head. "I'm Sebastian. I have to say, the students did well setting this ball up, very classy decor."
Some of it was tacky. But for the most part, a true statement.
"What do you do here, Amadea? I could have sworn I've seen you in the halls with a prefect pin on your collar... I've always been interested in applying for that position. How is it?"

Most people had moved away to talk to their friends or welcome the newcomers, leaving Amadea standing with Dymphna and Sebastian. Amadea felt a bit awkward standing with them, knowing they had come together and she couldn't help but feel as though she was third wheeling. Thankfully, Sebastian included her in the conversation, smiling and introducing himself and making a comment about the decor.Interact with Sebastian Leeds & Dymphna Teague
Amadea had been admiring it since she had walked in. While it in no way rivaled the decorations from the first and original Blossom Ball, but of course that was because Rhea and Eris had made the decorations all on their own without any help from anyone. The original Blossom Ball decorations had been put together by all of the professors and they had a lot of time doing so, while the two Gryffindors had a short amount of time. Given their circumstances, the decorations were amazing; both of them could have a future in decorating, if that was even a thing.
She nodded. "I agree, the decorations are amazing," Amadea gushed. "I can't believe Eris and Rhea did this all on their own." It didn't surprise Amadea, though. Everyone at Hogwarts was quite self sufficient and independent, and Rhea and Eris were no exceptions. They had somehow managed to put this all together without any help and pull it off (so far) flawlessly.
Continuing on the conversation, Sebastian asked about being a prefect. Amadea let out a short laugh. A prefect. What a thought! She had heard there was an opening for prefects, and had been thinking about applying to be one, but had no doubts that she would be rejected. "No, I'm definitely not a prefect," she said with a laugh. "Though I have been thinking about maybe applying. I hear it's a very important role; not quite difficult, just time consuming." Serena, the most well-known Hufflepuff prefect, was always doing something and Amadea didn't always envy her hectic schedule. However, Amadea wouldn't mind being a prefect, she thought. It would help her in developing her leadership skills and it would certainly push her out of her shell; talking to people was still a weak point.
"What about you?" she asked, steering the conversation back toward Sebastian (and Dymphna too), even though he had mostly already answered the question.

~ Replying to Dinah Dragensail ~
Kalani didn't know Dinah as well as she probably should have. They'd been sleeping in the same room for a while now, but she didn't think that she'd really sat down and spoken with her a lot. She didn't know the stupid silly things that people that were probably meant to be friends should know - family, friends, favourite colours and animals. It was the same with the other girls in their room - maybe this would be the turning point where she really started to get to know them.
She giggled lightly at the compliment, nodding as a thank you as the beam spread across her face. Without thinking much of it, she reached out and pinched the fabric of Dinah's dress between two fingers. She rubbed it a little, nodding enthusiastically as a way to return the compliment. She pointed a short finger towards the glittering diamanté decorations on the waistline, as they shimmered in the faint light that bathed the ballroom in an almost fairytale-like glow. She was almost mystified for a moment, her wrist hanging limp on her arm, before she snapped herself out of it and beamed back up at her roommate. If she'd noticed her temporary lapse in concentration and regularity, she didn't seem to acknowledge it.
Though she was a little worried herself, she could feel it coming off of Dinah in bucketloads. Her face looked awful self-conscious, looking around at the other ball-goers with concern painting her features. Kalani's anxious was a lot more excited and positive - which was pretty much the usual - but she could understand how Dinah's was maybe more bad-feeling than hers. There were a lot of people around. Another act of impulse, she gently took Dinah's hand in both of hers and squeezed it tight, letting go before it got too weird. A firm gesture of camaraderie between the two acquaintances, who'd hopefully soon be friends.
She looked around the hall, a little unsure of what to do now. Surely there was something nice and polite they were meant to do now. Mingle? She glanced up at Dinah, checking to see if she had any ideas on what to do. Deciding to give some of her own, she gestured around to the hall. There was a ton of places that you stand, but it was really a matter of what you were going to do once you were standing there. They could go over to the food table and make a mark on the buffet; they could stick with the crowd of girls they'd already found themselves in and chat; they could find someone else to talk with; or they could find a quiet corner and...talk between themselves? She looked up at Dinah with a quirked brow, and signed out, "what do you want to do?" After a moment - she still wasn't used to no one knowing sign language - she simply gestured around the hall once more, looking up at Dinah expectantly.

Responding to Kaegen Deathmote, Cecilia Moore, Rhea Bishop, Eris Fawley

Shoveling more food into his mouth as he waited for a response, Max almost got something with chocolate caught in his throat when a girl spoke and startled him. He started coughing, banging on his chest until it came back up looking considerably less delicious than before as a clump of wet food particles. He allowed himself the tiniest frown before shrugging and picking it up to eat it again. The less he had to chew, the less chance there was of him choking again at any rate.
Carefully ensuring he didn't get it stuck again, he nodded in the friendliest manner he could at the newcomer. She was that Ravenclaw newspaper girl who'd gathered all those people together to talk about that masked kid. He wondered if there was any more news on that - he hadn't gotten a chance to speak with Dorian or Eris after the whole thing but he had a feeling they hadn't been planning on just sitting still. He was fully intending to introduce himself and asking more about the situation when Rhea came over to give them a cursory greeting like the fantastic hostess she apparently was. Max grinned with his lips, suddenly wondering if his teeth were brown from the chocolate thing. He swept his tongue over them before responding with a slight laugh. "You know I will." And then she was gone, off to continue making people feel welcomed. She was a good person.
His eyes went back to Kaegen at the introduction, narrowing slightly at how odd it was. There was something about this guy... like he wasn't accustomed to the social norms of Hogwarts. Or maybe he had different norms from where he was from? Max's parents had always warned him that some people came from different cultures so they found certain things offensive that other people didn't. Was this one of those times? Should he introduce himself in the same manner so as not to seem like he wanted to offend the kid he'd once seen riding a Hippogriff?
Glancing at Cecilia uncertainly, he finally shrugged. "Maxwell Avery, pureblood from the edges of the city of Birmingham. He who was called... uh, Max as a toddler. And as a kid, since Maxwell is pretty long. He who earned the name - well, I didn't really earn any name, I don't think. And he whose - whose authority was passed down through 18 generations of Avery family members." Fairly certain he'd botched the majority of it, he hid behind picking out more food because in polite groups no one would make you talk when your mouth was full. Even if you'd just rudely botched what should be an elementary greeting to someone with a different set of standards.
He was saved from further humiliation when a familiar voice piped up, and his relief was a palpable thing when Eris showed up slinging familiar insults at him and the other boy. Did Eris know this Kaegen Deathmote? She seemed relatively acquainted with him, which honestly shouldn't come as much of a surprise with how many people she knew from being prefect and just being her usual... 'friendly' self. A grin tugged at his lips as he set his food down and arched a brow at her dress. Colourful, full of flowers, and fun-looking... it suited her. "You look nice," he said by way of salutation, a slight mocking wince on his face at the mention of throwing statues. "And that was one time. Come on, I only kick them now, you know that."
He turned back to Cecilia, the mischievous grin still on his face no matter how hard he wanted to wipe it off. Kaegen appeared to have completely disappeared - the kid was certainly a mystery - but he was distracted with wondering what kind of impression he must've made on the new girl. Kicking Hufflepuffs and messing up greetings, yeah, that about described who he was as a person.

This whole time, Anatole wished he wasn't so awkward. He hoped he wasn't as strange, as clumsy, as funny when it came to a simple date. It was stupid, really, how the boy who grew up on romanticizing, pun intended, such wonderful relationships for dance partners and others refused to make them himself.
Not just yet.
Love was too quick, too sudden, like pulling a curly hair out of one of your best friend's heads and having to apologize for it before moving onto some civil conversation. The other mix of girls were still mingling, but Anatole had Rosie's strip of hair in his hand, immediately letting it drop and wiping his hand on his black slacks before watching her whip around in this flurry of gold and brown. Her voice seemed angry as she turned, threatening with her tone, scornful with her words. Anatole got startled and flinched, catching himself and remaining with a nervous smile rather than breaking out into one fit or another. He was sweet, sweet enough to pull out her hair and hope to apologize. It was a ball, certainly, and he knew how much girls loved to look their best.
The sudden harshness in Rosie's tone slowed to a state of despondence as she apologized for what she had done too. She was an adorable girl, bashful and clever, charming and yet sensitive. An odd balance Anatole could have never discovered back in Tenbury. She was a gem.
"Don't worry about it, Anatole. Really, it's fine. I get it, it was kind of a stupid idea anyway. 'Shoulda asked you in person, it's my fault." The ways her voice fluctuated seemed nervous, even more nervous than him. It was challenging, but Anatole had to be a man in this situation.
Well, a different, strange sort of man than what was expected.
He had to tell the truth to comfort her. How he was busy, sure, and it was challenging, and how he just wasn't ready for such a commitment. If he wasn't sure, the poor boy might have mistook a single simple ball date for holy matrimony.
"Oh, alright...yeah. Sorry for distracting you from the conversation. It looked like you were having a good time with those girls, Eris, Rhea, and all those others, yes, and I hated to interrupt, but I needed to get all this off my chest." He sighed, clasping his hands behind his back. Be a man. A gentleman. Let her down easy. "So...yeah. The real reason why I didn't answer your invitation is because I didn't want to have to say no. I'm really not ready for some 'relationship' or whatever you call things like this, gross dates and all. I wanted to keep you as one of my best friends...nothing less, nothing more. I...I just didn't want to have to go through that, and here I am, saying it all here! Isn't that funny?" He attempted to laugh it away like it was nothing. "Yeah, hilarious. I was stupid, it's not your fault, you're an awesome human being and I'm not ready."
Foolish boy, mistaking a simple ball date for something much more. Making a mountain out of a molehill as usual, crafting a big deal over a small piece of hair. It was sometimes exhausting listening to him ramble. Tiresome, even.
"Maybe we can dance later! Yeah!" He smiled, stuffing his sweaty hands into his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels and toes."But...yeah. For now, I think I should leave you be. I guess I know how girls are and I wouldn't fit in. You should go back to what you were doing." His face read sincere apology. Thank God it was over. A weight was lifted, all the pain fluttering off and floating as high as the chandeliers before dissapating. "Oh, and, here's your hair if you want it." Anatole bent down, picking up the lock of hair before offering it to Rosie.
"I should really get going...I'm sure someone else wants to talk, probably Adam," he mustered soon after. Was Adam even here? With a charming wave, Anatole nodded and turned on his heel, about to find himself some other crowd, or even leave altogether if it came to it.
But he was a proud young man. The old Anatole was slowly coming back, the one who plotted his words and spoke like he was going to his deathbed. Every word held some inherent meaning to the girl, and somehow, he had done it.
He had rejected her like a gentleman.

He should just go.Interactions: Rosie Parker
Mentions: Ball Guests
Adam had wavered back and forth on the matter since he had received the invitation, but the time for wavering had long since past. The Student Ball was tonight, and if he was attending, he had to be on his way pretty much now. He forgot what time the invitation had said to arrive by, but it couldn't have been too late -- after all, they did still have a curfew, and he doubt that a student-run event would be a permitted exception. The first Blossom Ball had certainly been an unforgettable experience, though not for the reasons that Adam would have preferred. He'd hung around as the majority of students had left in a flood, but he hadn't gotten to talk to many of his friends. He was glad to have this opportunity to restart the night.
Besides, even if he didn't want to go, he didn't have much of a choice in the matter. Eris Fawley and Rhea Bishop had worked hard to put together the event, and as two of his closer friends at the castle, he couldn't just not show up. They'd never let him forget it. Making up his mind, Adam walked through the doors to his dorm room and threw on the outfit he'd worn for the first ball; though probably not the most fashion-forward choice, it was the nicest ensemble he had with him, and he didn't think that the other first-years would care very much. He spent a moment trying to comb down his hair, quickly realizing that it was much easier said than done. Finally, when he'd double-checked everything he could think of, Adam left the common room and started the descent to the castle's ballroom.
Not many people were in the corridors of the fourth floor, and Adam was glad for the silence that greeted him. Not everyone in the school had been invited to this encore of the dance, and Adam didn't want to run into someone not on the guest list and have to explain himself. Through the ballroom's heavy doors came the faintest echoes of music, laughter, and conversations from inside. It sounded like most of the guests had already arrived. He didn't know just how many people were invited, or how many would show. Eris and Rhea had offered to send out full guest lists, but he hadn't wanted to put them through the trouble. It didn't really matter to Adam who was there, of course -- he was always looking to meet more of his classmates, and reconnect with the ones he knew. Finally ready to go in, he took a deep breath and reached for the door's handles.
He was unexpectedly stopped when a tired-sounding voice rose sternly from nearby.
"Excuse me, boy, this is a private event. You only get in if you're on the list."
Looking down, Adam felt himself blush in embarrassment when he finally spotted an old house-elf standing by the doors with a piece of paper and quill in hand. He was surprised that the girls had managed to get a bouncer, even just a member of the staff such as the elf. Adam felt stupid for having missed the creature completely, the height difference working as a disadvantage once again. Stumbling out an apology, he saw the elf give a tiny eye-roll. He must have gone through this several times already, as his expression now clearly read, why did I ever agree to this?
"Just give me your name, please. No need to worry about it."
"Oh. Sorry. It's, um, Adam. Adam Harringtom. I'm friends with Eris, I should be on --"
"You are. Go right in."
Still feeling ashamed of himself, Adam thanked the old creature and slipped through the ballroom doors. The space was done up extravagantly, given the limited amount of time and supplies that the Gryffindor girls had. Adam smiled at the sight of all of the groups of people lingering around and talking with one another, and felt his mind start to race as he wondered who he should talk to first. Amadea could be seen on one side of the room with a boy unfamiliar to him and a girl he knew as Dymphna Teague, a Ravenclaw writer. Eris and Rhea were busy talking to their own friends, and even Max Avery was among the crowd. That's right, I think Eris is friends with him. Adam didn't see Anatole, but he figured that he must have been here as well. Finally, he spotted someone alone.
Sidling over to the girl nearby, Adam smiled and greeted her brightly. "Hey, Rosie! Haven't seen you in a while! Glad you came!" Though they'd only had one or two real conversations, Adam enjoyed hanging out with the Hufflepuff girl. They had fun together, and she was always open to doing funny things like watching the clouds with him. She looked pretty in her selected dress, and though he was a bit confused by the way she was holding her hand -- was that a hair between her fingers? why? -- it was easily overlooked. One thing was bothering him, though. It wasn't obvious, but Rosie seemed upset. Her face was that of someone who had just heard bad news, and the air around her almost felt disappointed itself. Mouth turning down in a slight frown, Adam looked her in the eyes.
"Hey...is everything okay?"

Rejection.
Normally, it wouldn't hurt Rosie. Hell, she knew it was coming. The whole 'hey, sorry I didn't answer. Didn't really feel like it' or whatever sentence was expected. And they would make up, and they would do whatever, yada yada.
But this was different.
Anatole didn't just say what Rosie expected him to. In fact, Rosie wasn't expecting it at all, and in that sense it should've been better, right? But Rosie couldn't have been more wrong, and it hurt so much more than she thought. He thought she wanted him as a boyfriend? Seriously? He thought she wanted this big commitment over a bloody ball date? What happened to going as best friends who were also dance partners? Rosie guessed Anatole didn't think about it that way, not in the slightest bit.
"I...I just didn't want to have to go through that, and here I am, saying it all here! Isn't that funny?"
He said that, but it was anything but funny, and it was obvious by the look of sheer horror on Rosie's face. He rejected her for something she didn't even want, in front of everyone. Rosie's face was heating up in embarrassment. He embarrassed her. Now everyone knew that poor little Rosie Parker got rejected over something she wasn't even implying. Rosie didn't want a relationship, much less with Anatole. She was twelve! Most twelve year olds didn't even consider relationships, unlike a few naive pairs. But here they were, talking about it like it was some highschool drama. And it was embarrassing.
As Anatole kept talking, he must've read Rosie's face, because he was seemingly trying to get himself out of the conversation. Rosie's face was one you could describe as... heartbreaking, embarrassed, horrified, whatever word you wanted to use, it's how Rosie felt. Heartbroken, embarrassed, horrified. Her best friend -- best friend, thought that this was about them being together, like that. From the few shows Rosie had watched, in one scene, the girl was in a similar situation, only she slapped him. But this was the ball that Eris and Rhea made, and Rosie wasn't about to slap Anatole, as much as she probably wanted to. And finally, Rosie began to speak. "I never... wanted, to be your girlfriend, Anatole. I-I don't want a relationship. I wanted to say that I got to go with my best friend to the ball. A place to dance, the thing we're the best at. B-But I guess, even my best friend can't tell what I want." She said, bitterly.
For some reason, Anatole had put the strand of hair that he snatched, back into Rosie's hands, and left. Without another word. Not even to stay to make sure she was okay. What was he thinking? Was she that bad? Was she that revolting to him? Her hands started to shake, and her eyes began watering. It was almost as if the month couldn't get any worse, and now she was about to burst out into tears at Eris and Rhea's ball.
"Hey, Rosie! Haven't seen you in a while! Glad you came!" A perky voice shouted, and Rosie turned to be faced with Adam Harringtom. Honestly, Rosie was glad he was here. But she was not in the state for conversation. Tears were running down her face at this point, she felt so ugly and betrayed. Anatole just made it seem that Rosie was desperate for a relationship, in public, she didn't even wanna see the looks of pity she was probably getting. With a whimper, she pushed passed Adam while he was asking her if she was okay and bolted towards one of the tables, hiding under one. Once she was hidden under the table cloth, she buried her face into her knees and began to cry.
They say that balls and dances are some of the best parts of Hogwarts, but for Rosie, it was one of the worst days of her year. But she didn't wanna leave, not when she was invited into something her friends put so much effort into. Not yet. She just had to breathe. In... Out. Until she forced herself to be better.
She had to be better.

-Replying to Kalani Anderson-
Encouraged by Kalani’s return of the compliment on her dress, Dinah felt her confidence momentarily soar. She had been worried about her dress from the moment she had put it on but the girls obvious appreciation of it really made Dinah feel at ease.
Apparently the feeling didn't carry on to her expression or her behaviour as she was shocked out of her surveyance of the room by a warm hand closing around her own. She glanced down and saw that Kalani had grabbed and squeezed her hand, comfortingly. It was nice but didn’t go on too long that it became uncomfortable.
“Oh...thank you, haha.” Dinah said, signing the words and grinning at Kalani. It was one of the few phrases in sign language that she actually knew. She only hoped she’d done it correctly and hadn’t just terribly offended Kalani.
The two girls looked around the room, both seeming to wonder what to do next. The ball appeared to be getting on well. People were stood all around chatting amongst themselves, all seeming to enjoy themselves.
Dinah watched as Kalani signed out something and felt horrible that she couldn’t understand it. She made a mental note that her project for the summer holidays would be to at least try and learn more sign language. If she was going to be friends with Kalani - which she very much hoped she would be - it would only be polite that she make the effort.
Apparently realising she she didn’t understand, Kalani had gestured around the room in a ‘what shall we do?’ kind of way.
Dinah considered for a moment. The other girls they had been stood with seemed to be in their own private conversations and she didn’t want to interrupt.
“Do you want to go get a drink?” Dinah asked, pointing over to the food and drinks table. “Or we could just go chat over there?”
She indicated to a table a little way across the room that was empty. It wasn’t far enough out of the way that they wouldn’t look antisocial but would give them a little space from the group.

Standing right in the middle of the room, the group of chattering girls started to grow substantially, more and more of them walking into the large hall, dolled up in a variety of ways.
The second and third to enter, right after Phaedra herself, had been two Hufflepuffs; the first of which introduced herself as Amadea Campbell and the second was another brunette by the name of Rosie Parker, although she didn't speak her name like the first had and instead asked how they felt about the gathering. Phaedra gave the girl a nod in agreement - this was pretty cool - the bridge of her freckled nose wrinkling as she smiled politely. At the sight of a new face walking up behind Rosie, her expression relaxed as she watched the dark-haired girl come up to them in a cute, floral dress that somewhat resembled a muumuu.
The girl in red hadn't said her name either, and Phaedra thought nothing of it, quite used to that by now. Not everyone was raised to do such introductions, unfortunately. After returning the girl's wave, she spotted her closest friend, Max, stroll in and was about to excuse herself from the large group so she could go speak to him instead. Not that she didn't like the others standing before her, but she could only deal with forced smiles and greetings for so long, and with Max she was able to be a bit more comfortable. The only thing that stopped her from doing so was the voice of Rhea, speaking up for the Hawaiian girl instead.
She watched, eyebrow raised, as the Bishop girl introduced everyone - slowly. Phaedra hadn't taken notice of the Hawaiian's bracelets, Kalani's arm releasing from the introductory wave to play with hair faster than Phaedra could see. With every stressed word spoken from Rhea, it finally dawned on the Ravenclaw girl that Kalani must have had some sort of hearing impairment. Phaedra had never personally met a deaf person before, and suddenly realised how useful it would have been had she taken on sign language studies along with her Greek and French so she could at least introduce herself better. It seemed the girl knew how to read the lips of others, but the problem would likely be understanding her. However, at the end of the day, that didn't matter. There was always the option of communicating through written words, were they to ever see each other again.
Rhea Bishop then excused herself to go and interact with the new incomers scattered all around the room, but mostly around the food table. The redhead was a great host, and as she fulfilled her duties as such Phaedra turned back to listen to the light chatter amongst their group, and then Rhea finally returned. Suddenly, an owl flew down with a letter attached to its leg and Phaedra recoiled slightly, the owl's large wings sending back a wave of air that hit her face. Raising an arm up to slick down any stray, wavy hairs, Phaedra watched stone-faced as Rhea opened the letter and seemed to shut down at whatever it had said. Kalani placed a hand on the Gryffindor's shoulder to console her, but before Phae could properly ask what the matter was the carrier owl took off and Rhea closed the letter and signalled a change of topic. Whatever it was, she didn't want to talk about it.
At Rhea's mention of music requests, Phaedra turned to her and shrugged. "Sure. You know, I have quite a few if anyone is going to ballroom dance, which I sure hope we-," she almost finished, cut off by the arrival of someone new to their small crowd.
A boy Phaedra had never seen before stood behind Rosie and pulled at her hair, a bit too hard in her opinion. In fact, pulling at someone's hair at all was too hard. Phaedra grimaced at this - if that were her hair she likely would have swung around to give the boy a taste of her fist. Her hair was her comfort and pride and she would be damned if someone were to yank on it. She watched the curly-haired girl, sympathetically, as the boy that was talking to her then rejected her... in front of everyone. Phaedra's brows furrowed, how rude was that? To ignore a friend's owl inviting him to attend an event together? The least he could do was gently reject her by letter, rather than in public. She didn't know this Anatole kid, but he was starting to upset even her. Her dark eyes went to Rosie, to see how she'd react.
To no one's surprised, Rosie appeared flustered - she figured would be as well after such a harsh rejection - and softly responded to the boy's apology. The atmosphere was getting too awkward for Phaedra to take, reminding her of the one-sided conversations she had with her date at the first dance, and without a word, she turned away from the two so she could find the rest of her friends. It would be inappropriate and impolite to eavesdrop any further.
Seeing Max, Eris, and Rhea along with her two fellow Ravenclaw acquaintances, Cecilia and Kaegen, Phaedra took hold of a bit of fabric of dress so she could walk over to the group more comfortably and avoid tripping on the long hem. "Hey guys," she said with a soft smile, tapping her chin to see what desserts she would particularly enjoy eating. Her eyes landed on a macaroon similar to the one Rhea had, and she reached forward to grab it. "How're things going?" she questioned, bringing her sweet up to her mouth only to pause halfway.
Out of the corner of her eyes, the same girl that had been rejected swept across the floor and dived under a faraway table, causing Phaedra's mouth to drop open in disbelief. Was this really happening? Why couldn't she just go to a toilet and cry, like Phaedra did sometimes?
"Uhh...?" Turning back to the group, she nodded her head in the direction of Rosie Parker's hiding table, though the Hufflepuff girl was out of view at that point. "Did anyone else see that? The we-" She paused. It wouldn't be good to call her a weirdo in front of her friends. "That girl is crying. Should we... do something? That Gryffindor boy rejected her pretty badly when I was there."
She held her hands up and shrugged, left hand still holding the macaroon she had yet to bite into. "But if we want to ignore it and eat - I'm fine with that! Though I feel pretty bad." Blinking, she finally bit into the treat. Phaedra knew that sometimes when she was crying, the last time she wanted was someone to find out and try to get her to talk about her stupid feelings. If Rosie wanted to be alone and cry it out, then she'd grant that wish, but she barely knew the girl and had no idea what would be best for her. Maybe someone who knew her better could decide.
Secretly, Phaedra hoped this small drama wouldn't ruin the ball for a second time.
