anyway, i think the convo started with someone asking if they could play someone with ocd and autism. while i personally think it would be better if you were to play someone with some personality traits that are prevalent in the disorder rather than naming the disorder as a whole rather than saying: my character has adhd. instead: my character is very hyperactive/impulsive. ( hyperactive/impulsive kid does not mean they have adhd) don't give a character a disorder and make it their personality as it might be very hard to remove it if you have second thoughts/when your char grows. in reality, a variety of disorders like those cannot be removed/managed without professional help and support. potentially you might play out things wrongly/insensitively or only play a disorder by its stereotypes or do not take reconsideration the age of the character. is not really that good if you don't take the effort to do the research. but this is just my opinion, someone else can back me if they want to i guess.

a lot of times people who say they have ocd or 'a little bit of' actually don't really have obsessive-compulsive disorder, which may invalidate those who really are struggling with the disorder. funny- cause i was diagnosed with ocd once by an earlier psych but it happens i don't have it. there are apparently 4 types of ocd, but its not always that straightforward.

@rita su, almost all disorders are misunderstood. @André Lebedev feel free to dm me, i was diagnosed just earlier this year independently.

You are absolutely right, I think you cannot fully understand a mental disorder without actually suffering from it or encountering someone to suffer from it, which make most people misunderstand those mental struggles and for example, claiming they have OCD while they are just a little more hygiene focused than others. The symptoms of those mental disorders are also varied from person to person, making it difficult for people to understand and it is easy to fall into stereotypical traps.

Oh, you also have anxiety disorder! 🤗 Yeah, we all can be anxious from time to time, but anxiety disorder is a different thing. I don`t know much about anxiety disorder, but I know having a panic attack in a social situation is a lot of hassle and very embarrassing, and there are different kinds of anxiety disorder like social anxiety, GAD, etc. OCD also arises from anxiety, cos it is something those people with OCD are obsessively anxious about make them do those things repetitively, and the worst thing is they know something is wrong, but they feel the urge to continue doing that compulsively. God, abnormal psychology is so fascinating!
I feel like that advantage of this site is we get to talk about things I would rather keep it to myself without worrying about people looking down upon me. IRL, I think besides my family and a few teachers, no one know about me having ADHD in my childhood.
